- ONE LIFE tells the true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London broker who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 predominantly Jewish children from the Nazis. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realised it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed?
Fifty years later, it’s 1988 and Nicky lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. It’s not until a live BBC television show, ‘That’s Life’, surprises him by introducing him to some surviving children - now adults - that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he had carried for five decades. - Фільми й анімація
I saw the original clip of Sir Nicholas Winton meeting the children he saved during WWII and thought, 'They should make a movie about this guy.' A week later, I was both thrilled and surprised to see the trailer. Honestly, it's such a feel-good moment.

Oppenheimer & One Life. Now, the important question is: which one of them will win the Oscars? Both of them are Nazi movies. It will be difficult for Oscar voters.
I remember that episode of That's Life, back in the1988. I remember crying when everyone around him stood up to show they'd been on the kindertransport he'd arranged.
It was an incredible thing he did, & he hid it for almost 50 years, not even telling his family what he'd achieved. He was such a humble man. He saved 669 children, on 8 trains. It would have been more but the last train was scheduled to leave on 1 September 1939 & Germany invaded Poland on that day. Of the 250 kids on the last, cancelled train, only 2 survived the war, the Nazis killed the rest. Winton beat himself up every day for that failure.
When you look at the later careers of those he saved, some did incredible work benefitting humanity, such as Renata Laxova (paediatric geneticist, discoverer of Neu-Laxová syndrome, who was only 7-8 when she took part in the kindertransport, & fled Czechoslovakia for the 2nd time in 1968 when the USSR invaded, & again escaped to the UK), Leslie Baruch Brent(immunologist & co-discoverer of acquired immunological tolerance) & Joe Schlesinger (award-winning journalist & author).
Winton was initially a conscientious objector at the start of WW2, instead volunteering for the Red Cross. A year later, he joined the RAF as an aircraft man but rose through the ranks. After the war, he worked for the International Refugee Organization & later the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
Even in his family life he was an exceptional man. The youngest of his 3 children, Robert, had Down Syndrome. At the time, kids with DS were put in children's homes & basically abandoned by their families who assumed the residential home would be better for them than continuing in the family home. We now know this is not true, but at the time it was considered best practice. Winton & his wife questioned this, arguing that their son would have a better life with his siblings & parents, so they kept Robert with them. They were devastated when he caught meningitis & died when he was 6. Winton's response was to found a local branch of a UK charity for people with learning disabilities, Mencap.
He received a number of awards throughout his life, especially when his work with the kindertransport became public knowledge. In chronological order:
1983 - he was made MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for setting up a group of homes for the elderly;
1998 - he was awarded the Order of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, Fourth Class, by the Czech President Václav Havel;
2003 - he was knighted (Knight Bachelor) for services to humanity in the UK for his work with the kindertransport;
2003 - he received the Pride of Britain Award for Lifetime Achievement;
2008 - the Czech government named a school in Kunžak after him & he was awarded the Cross Merit of the Minister of Defence, Grade 1. They also nominated him for the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize. Czech astronomers Jana Tichá & Miloš Tichý named a minor planet after him, 19384 Winton;
2009 - a statue of him was unveiled on Platform 1 of the Praha hlavní nádraží railway station, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the last Kindertransport train;
2010 - he was named a British Hero of the Holocaust by the British Government;
2010 - a statue of Winton sitting reading a book was unveiled at Maidenhead railway station (the town he lived in). There were already memorials of him at London's Liverpool Street Station, where the kindertransport children had arrived in the UK;
2013 - he received the Wallenberg Medal from the University of Michigan (named after Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who had studied architecture in Michigan, & rescued tens of thousands of Jews in Budapest during the closing months of WW2, before disappearing in 1945 after being detained by agents of the secret service of the USSR on suspicion of espionage. In 1947, Soviet authorities reported Wallenberg had died of a suspected myocardial infarction on 17 July 1947 while imprisoned in the Lubyanka prison);
2014 - the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation set up a literary competition in Winton's name. The contest is for essays by high school students about Winton's legacy;
2014 - he was awarded the Order of the White Lion (Class I) by Czech President Miloš Zeman. The Czech Defence Ministry sent a special plane to fly him to Prague. He also met some of the children he'd rescued. He was 105 years old, with the children themselves being in their 80s;
2015 - Winton was awarded the Freedom of the City of London;
2019 - his old school, Stowe, opened a new boys' day house, named Winton.
Winton was not a religious man, he'd lost at his religion during WW2, saying he couldn't reconcile religious people "praying for victory on both sides of the same war". He also said "I believe in ethics, & if everybody believed in ethics we'd have no problems at all. That's the only way out; forget the religious side."
Winton died peacefully in his sleep, aged 106, with his family around him, on the 76th anniversary of one of his train's departures. His motto in life was not to wait for others to do something but be the one to make the difference personally. Strong words from an honourable, decent man who certainly made a difference.

I remember that "that's life" episode and I remember thinking what a wonderful,brave and humble man,in the dictionary,under the word hero, should be this gentlemans name,that generation of men and women are unfortunately something we shall never have again,my great uncle volunteerd for the 2nd world war,as did his brother,most of the young men on his street, many lying about their age, women volunteering for duties helping the war effort.i myself43 now,served in the army for 10 years, however,I'm afraid to say that,I believe if a third world war was to occur,the polar opposite would occur, career office would be empty,men lying to get exempt rather than get accepted and it makes me sad-LEST WE FORFET!

This is a testament to what one man, one life can do. I am the son of one of the children Nicky Winton saved. There are many more alive today around the world and this film is a stark reminder of how we choose to life impacts the lives of others. It's a story that (unfortunately) needs retelling again and again. Thank you Sir Winton. Thank you to those who chose to labor and make this film.

Great news. I'm the son of a Kinderstransport refugee. The many ordinary people (especially in the UK) who helped in this extraordinary effort -- including Nick Winton, but there were many, many others -- are all saints.
Absolutely delighted that Sir Winton's story finally can be heard by the millions. He was a hallmark of humanity.

A close family friend was saved by Sir Nick, I would not know myself or my life without them.
Saw the premier of this… and unexpectedly we had watched the entire movie with the ACTUAL children survivors, who then stood up at the end just like they do in the movie and recieved a huge standing ovation.

If anyone questions if they can truly make a difference, Sir Nicholas Winton is your proof.
People often ask why I sometimes bristle when all or most veterans (including myself...) are called "heroes" by those that did not serve. The reason I bristle is because to do so for all veterans (or all first responders, or all anything-elsers...) diminishes the value of the title: hero. Heroes go above and beyond any reasonable expectations to help others, often at great risk to themselves, and for no personal gain, other than the knowledge that it is the 'right' thing to do.
THIS MAN is a hero.

It’ll be a definite tear jerker. Sir Anthony H is one of my all time favourite actors! As a survivor of a civil war I can relate to this so much. Brings back certain agonizing memories.

Absolutely amazing human being that was Sir Nicholas Winton, like so many others, I've seen the original clip of him sitting in the audience unaware that he was surrounded by all the children that he had saved. Anthony Hopkins is a master of his craft, and I can't wait to see him in this!
Of all the people who had a movie made about their life, Sir Nicholas Winton deserves it the most. I remember seeing that BBC episode as a kid and wondering why someone who did something so incredible didn't have a movie made about them.
The moment I saw Anthony Hopkins take place in the audience, I knew what this is about. The original footage is such a testament to the absolute good we can sometimes find in people.
This is the kind of movie that needs to be made. If schools won’t teach history, perhaps cinema will.
There are States in the US where it is illegal now to teach actual history. They dogwhistle and call it CRT or critical race theory. Teachers want to teach history, but some powerful people don't want it. It's a sad, sad world.
Schools teach history, it's just sad how society expects people to only learn things from school and not outside of it. I despise the response, "oh, I didn't learn that in school," as if reading, learning, and education is exclusive to school hours and activities.
Time is limited, some things must be prioritized over others. Everything is a tradeoff.

An exceptional actor beyond any imagination. He is completely unique among actors. I'm so sad to see him so old, I wish he could live forever.

I had tears in my eyes and goosebumps by the end of the video when the woman says "who here owes their life to Nicholas Winton?"
I remember watching "That's Life" back in 1988 and weeping. I still can't watch that clip without tears, one of the most emotive and best judged pieces of television ever transmitted. I guess he didn't want a film made during his life, a true hero....if his wife hadn't discovered his journals in the attic in 1988 we'd never have known about him because he never boasted, never said a word.
I think a lot of people saw the original tv show in which the reunion takes place on Instagram and/or TikTok and I think It's great they decided to make a movie about Nicholas Winton and the good that he did for those people.
We have to tell stories like this, or "average" good deeds instead of giving media coverage to things like wars.
Up until "lockdown" I worked with one of the survivors she is 10 years older than me. and I remember her getting an invite from St James's Palace to attend a special event. regarding the Kindertransport children, at first she said she didn't want to go and I got the details of the meeting at St James's Palace for her and talked her into attending. She was allowed to take 1 guest with her, and chose her only grandaughter. I watched that meeting on the internetand iy was so heartwarming when after he had walked into a room without lights on and he stood with some of the people in charge when the lights went up and he could see all these people and the person in charge asked if all the Kindertransport children would please stand up and all of the people in the room stood up and that wonderful man was full of tears at how many had survived. My cousins wifes family apart from 3 of them all died in the Camps, along with their Father. They where given up by his German wife to the Gestapo. in exchange for his businesses and money.

I remember seeing this incredible story on UA-cam a while back, it was the actual footage of the That's Life broadcast. I was crying at the end because what this man had done and the burden he carried because he couldn't save more of those children. I'm so happy the world has the chance to see the story on the big screen. I can't wait for its release. Anthony Hopkins is the perfect actor to play Sir Nicholas Winton.

Although Sir Nicholas Winton did an amazing thing & saved the lives of 669 children, he was never in any personal danger, so he is ineligible for that award. I agree that it seems unfair, but Yad Vashem has its rules.

Saw it at TIFF and it was one of the most moving experiences I've ever had in a theater.
I knew that, they would make a movie on him. A true Hero. A true legend.
They have already made multiple films about him.
This movie is long overdue of man who one might consider as one of the greatest human that has ever lived.
Even in the moments of greatest darkness, there will always be those brave souls who hold up a candle. Sir Nicholas Winton was one of those people. Not for fame, or glory, but because it was the right thing to do. I look forward to seeing this film.
Take a look at a polish lady called Irena Sendler. Her story is as inspiring if not more. Both these people deserve so much credit.
Oskar Schindler's story ("Schindler's List", 1993) is different, but also worth re-telling and re-watching. The man basically did a 180 from being an opportunist and moneymaker to spending his whole fortune and risking his own life to save Jews from death in nazi concentration camps

Winton's story was featured during the "Season of Light: Christmas with the Tabernacle Choir" on Public Broadcasting stations across America. The story was explained by David Suchet, who played clips from the actual TV show, and then introduced Winton's son to the thousands watching live, and the TV audience. It was incredibly moving,

There's a clip of him meeting the grown children in the audience he saved. It's so emotional and amazing. He's a hero such as Desmond Doss who kept saying, "One more" saving lives on Hacksaw Ridge.

He is hero... in my eyes, in my country. I am so happy that is a movie. We will never forget. It is very important to show our children the past and deeds of these heroes. Safe one life safe a world... Everyone can do it.
Saw the film today, it is such an excellent movie. Antony Hopkins at his very best. and simply nailed the part. I remember watching the "That's Life" episode he originally appeared in and wondering what the back story was, seeing the recreation of that episode and now knowing the story I have to admit I felt a tear running down the side of my face more of joy then of sadness that there is good in this world and ordinary people can make a difference. . I can highly recommend this film .
Cannot wait to see this film! What an incredible man who did a wonderful thing for all those children! He couldn't save them all but he did what he could and that was save 669 lives and secure 669 futures, in the process he also secured the lives and futures of hundreds of thousands of other people too, I hope all that good karma followed him into the next life and he is at peace.

I been knowing this story for a long time and im glad they turned into a movie, he deserve recognition for saving so many Jewish children putting his life at risk and that of his family in order to save so many, and then not to speak about it for years thats the definition of a Good Samaritan, he didnt boast about the great thing he did, may he rest in peace now , and the cast of this movie Antony Hopkins , Jonathan Pryce and helena boham carter a cast of A Llisters to do this movie is a must watch and a top priority on my must watch list

I have watched the documentary on this...Nicky's Family...twice. It's on Prime video. Just so incredibly moving! The sacrifice of everyone involved. The parents who said goodbye to their children, the children themselves and the families taking care of them and of course Sir Nicholas and his entire operation. He was a very interesting man-very unique personality. When I think of the "right person at the right time" in history...this sure suits the occasion. The documentary shows the video of him sitting, unaware, of some of the children, now adults, that he saved....it was a profoundly moving experience...tears, of course, but something more than that...just the sheer audacity of him to do what he did and to be sitting next to the lives of all that he saved-power of love, resilience, perseverance, faith, hope...incredible. I think it should be made available to high schools throughout the US and turned into a theater production such as Anne Frank's...this story must be told-forever.

YES ! THANK ! YOU ! I had seen the original TV clip years ago and asked myself "how come there isn't a movie about him ?!?"... AND IT'S FINALLY MADE. Glad Anthony Hopkins plays that GREAT man !
I saw this movie and I was moved to tears by it. "He who saves one life saves the world entire", like Oskar Schindler. It must have been awful for all the young children having to be evacuated to a place of safety, away from all the bombings in London. Imagine, being a young child and having to spend Christmas Day and your birthday, away from your home and your family during World War Two. So many people say that life is hard today, but imagine having to starve through The Great Depression, and then Adolf Hitler invading Poland and going straight into The Second World War in 1939. They really were bleak times to live through. This is an amazing film.

I would not compare Sir Winston to Oscar Schindler. He did the right thing straightaway and did not need to look deep inside to find his humanity. It was always there. A must-watch for me.

Every American should see this movie.
And the thing is, until he died he downplayed his role in the thing. He always gave credit to others. He would always say that he got it started but other people made the whole operation work. But the point is, without his efforts, none of it would have worked. He saw something needed to be done and he found a way to do it, against a ticking clock. Many others would have not done the same.
Just when you thought Oppenheimer's Murphy was going to be the winner of the Academy, this actually might put him up to a challenge..!

Antony Hopkkins just seems to have reached a new prime, with films like The Father and no this one. He's phenomenal. And for a trailer to make tear up is just an amazing achievement, can't wait too see it.
I was an extra on this film. I’m in the restaurant/dinner scene between Hopkins and pryce. It was so cool to be in the same room as the legend anthony Hopkins. Shot this a year ago.

This true story of an ordinary man who with others in the face of genocide and brutally, did everything he could to save the lives of the innocent even at the risk of to his life, most probably the most moving true story anyone will ever be told in a movie theater, if this story doesn't make you cry floods of tears, then you have no soul.
I saw this trailer a few hours ago at the cinema, and I’m so happy there’s a film of this story. The moment the camera lens turned at the beginning, I gasped.
The name "Anthony Hopkins'' in enough for me to go watch the movie.
I wish there would be same help for the children facing the same situation in many countries around the world at the moment. The wars have not ended, the abuse has not gone down. Every child deserves a new chance at life.
One of the children that Sir Nicholas saved was a six year old boy called Alfred Dubs. Dubs went on to become a Labour politician and is now Baron Dubs and sits in the House of Lords. Since 2016 he has been fighting to enshrine in our laws protections for unaccompanied children who come to the UK as refugees like he did as a child - a response to the European Migrant crisis. Unfortunately the Government is fighting him every step of the way and repealed the Dubs Amendment in 2017 as well as shutting down his several attempts to reinstate it in the years since. I really hope that we'll be able to see his efforts realised soon.

I knew instantly that this was the story about Sir Nicholas Winton. He is the definition of a true SUPER HERO! Irena Sendler is his equal.
That shot of camera turning on Hopkins, that's master class, without even knowing who Mr Nicholas is i felt goosebumps.
I had stumbled with the video of the show twice and cried every time. Yesterday, when deciding which film we were watching at the cinema today, I saw this preview and it was a done deal. I cried all through the movie. It's such a powerful story!

Looks like another fantastic movie, that'll go alongside Schindler's List, as a true classic.

Glad this great man is getting a film made about his incredible kindness and bravery,
669 children saved from Nazism and the camps because of him,

I know it's a true story, hopefully no matter what happens in life, we still have this kindness in our hearts❤

As an Indian I was not aware of this but thanks to social media who shows the world 🌎 that auper hero's are amonge with us with simple life....
