Max Headroom, played by Matt Frewer was fucking awesome. Finding out it was cancelled for Miami vice and Dallas adds insult to injury! It was a highlight of the TV week and the original film launching the series was brilliant!
God this makes me miss the 80s. The world was still a big place back before the internet and cell phones, and people that wanted to be anonymous could stay that way forever.
I think everyone got off easy on this one. The hijacker could have just as easily put up "NORAD now tracking multiple incoming icbm missiles from Russia" along with some graphics of tracks coming into the United States. That would have scared the fuk out of everyone at the height of the cold war.
Perhaps it was some sort of black ops situation to warn other parts of the government. Maybe some army generals weren’t listening to some cia officials about security threats. Hard to believe that someone with enough expendable income like that would be young enough to dress up like a pop culture icon to do this for shits and giggles.
the message that was sent was you can't control the airwaves. this was at a time before they could control public broadcast syndication because their networks were analog and had no security. they took advantage of this lack of security and their inability to take control of the syndication network very easily and proved they could do it without getting caught. the technical knowledge required to do this type of stunt is a clue to who was involved these people had to be insiders. the performance artist angle may have been someone the technical party enlisted to provide visual content. its funny that nobody really thinks anything beyond this was a silly stunt. this had far larger implications and impact on the syndicated television industry and was done to intimidate the most powerful syndicated television network bosses. .
Mike! My guy! Man don’t u sleep? You’re like a machine just pumping the vids out lately bro. We all appreciate it so much! As always, great job and keep it up...and get some rest!
doom yeah man I’m subscribed to basically every decent true crime/unsolved mystery channel on UA-cam, and even though his channel is newer, it’s easily one of the best. Honestly his is my personal favorite because it does a little bit of everything. He’ll have plenty of serious stuff, some funny stuff, and best of all, stuff I haven’t heard of before. Most of these channels literally just regurgitate the same story over and over. Mike finds stories that aren’t as well known, and even when he does do one I’ve heard before, he always does a deep dive on it and brings something new to the table.
I know this is an older video, but my gosh, Mike you always get me! Your presentation has the right amount of drama, so much of your experience telling the stories and letting us relax a bit listening to your story.
It’s highly likely that there were multiple perpetrators involved in this incident. The person who actually interrupted the two stations was working with the people who created the video footage. That would involve a minimum of three people up to four if the engineer wasn’t one of the people who actually created the video. The other three would be the girl with the fly swatter, the masked guy, and the cameraman filming the video.
THANK YOU SO MUCH lmfao What? You're acting like they've been impossible to find... you merely never tried. Wtf did he do to help you? you always wanted to? they've AWLAYS been available to watch.. lmfao some people god help me.
Back in the good old analogue transmission days, interfering with a Tv stations feed was actually pretty easy...most Ham radio operators could probably figure out a way to do it
@M J - I can tell you how it was done, you can still do it with the right skill, and a lot of very expensive equipment. The most impressive part is broadcasting with enough power to override the normal broadcast signal, a homemade signal amp that big would be very dangerous to operate or would have to be directional aimed straight at the local station broadcast dish.
And it wasn't done the same way the other two were, the guys that got caught used commercial equipment to hack/highjack a commercial signal, very easy to track.
It's literally SO 80's that they just "couldnt" figure out who did this. There were 8 channels. Everyone used an antenna. How hard would this have been to find the Public Access station where Randy switched the red and blue cables.
I remember this happening. I lived in northern Illinois at the time and was at my friend T.J.'s house and we were watching Doctor Who. Now in retrospect, I don't blame anyone for interrupting any episode of the Seventh Doctor.
Which TV show are you referring to? Because as I remember Max Headroom started as the host of a music TV show. Then came the commercials, and then the non-music TV show. Always supposing my brain still has its facts right. ;-)
@@Panbaneesha A TV movie came first (in Britain) called _Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future_, which was broadcast in 1985. Then the music video host gig. Then the series. Then the commercials. ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Headroom_(character) ) 😎
@@SteveCole73 There was a made-for-TV movie in Britain first, and I think that the TV show's popularity in the US (although short-lived, sadly) led to Max being the Coke spokesperson. IIRC. (See my other comment to Panbaneesha.)
@@sandrafaith Oh, I completely forgot about the movie that came before the series. I actually watched that some years ago (didn't catch it at the time). As to the time of the commercials, I seem to stand corrected. ;)
That's awesome to know! Hopefully when they retire in a few years they'll admit to it. Or do we even want to know? Perhaps it's best that it's just a mystery!
@Josh Weaver who ever did this does not regret it I promise you that... it took far too much effort to execute then stay silent on... there is a level of investment there that only a smart person would make imo therfore making it likely they still love their hack even all these years later.
I was really hoping you were going to include the WKCR 88.9 radio intrusion as well in this video. If anything that intrusion was far more bizarre and sounded completely freaky.
Thank you for covering a case that has weirdly and inexplicably fascinated me for too many years! Seriously though, I’d love to know who was behind it and whether they’re still alive today.
In 1987 computers weren't as common as they are now. Computer Hacking was barely even heard of. So, whoever did it was a well informed and highly educated with computer knowledge. Plus, they had all of the right equipment. That should be the beginning of a very short list.
@Christie Malry Right. But, that was a movie.🎥 The first computers that kids or adult consumers could own, probably weren't powerful enough to do something like that. Plus, the expertise and, knowledge of computers, video and, don't forget broadcasting.
@Christie Malry I was troubleshooting and repairing microwave radio sights. The how is undetermined. Since most control rooms weren't un manned and, computer controlled at that time. They would have had to block or interrupt the Stations signal. And, inject their own. I knew people that had been engineers at TV Stations since the early '70s. All that was required was an FCC HAM Operators license to get that job. All of the controls and switching was done manually. And, most of it still is. This was quite likely an inside job. Or, at least there was some culpability or assistance from station personnel.
@Christie Malry I haven't fabricated any information. Or, done any research. This is my lifes work and experience. You're overthinking this thing. All I was trying to do is posit a profile. To maybe understand what happened. It's not personal.
I remember when that happened I was living in Los Angeles at the time and you would have thought we were under attack by the Soviets the way the FCC freaked out. I'm glad they never actually busted anyone for this, it adds a little spice to life that people back then could actually fool what would become the corrupt surveillance state we have now.
They know who it was, they hired them and locked down the info. like they always do with good hackers, if youre a hacker and you want a kickass job, pull of something like that...Best resume ever.

I'm so happy for whoever pulled this off. It was blatant; brazen; chaotic; confusing; and yet, ultimately harmless. Whoever did this gave us a harmless, yet sort of spooky unsolved mystery & almost urban-legend type addition to our 20th century lore, and they deserve a deep commendation for giving us such a wonderful gift. I'd hate to see them come forward now, I td ruin all the fun. To whoever did this, if you're still basking in your small slice of infamy by watching this video and reading the comments for a good chuckle and a sense of fulfillment: thank you for your service, you frickin' goon 😂👏👏👏
"The 80's in a nutshell." Yep, that pretty much covers it. I don't think the show was cancelled because it "couldn't keep up" - I believe it was cancelled because people couldn't keep up with the show. They preferred to watch the brain-dead, night time soap opera crap. BTW, this footage is still creepy AF.
@@SanFran51 The US version also never really lived up to the UK version and once he started shilling Coke, the character lost any anti-corporate cred it had in the initial premise. Seeing the ads and US version first, I found the whole character just irritating at the time but when I went back to watch the original movie, it was pretty good.
I find his work- disturbing. It speaks to a level beyond conscious thought, perhaps where the instincts of a darker age in human history still dwell- also, he interrupted my Bears game. C'MON! goddammit..
I honestly believe my late husband, a brilliant electrical engineer, was in on this. If I could ask him one question, that might be the one. (He was brilliant, and crazy as hell when he was young.) He wouldn't have been the guy on camera, but the technical knowledge? Yeah, he had it.

It was a very cheesy decade. People idealise it now, but with Reagan and Thatcher and all of the yuppie shit that went with being a conservative...It was a dark time, politically. In those days, though, there were real alternative cultures... all of that has been muddied with time.
Signal intrusion events are an interesting phenomena. One of the more recent events was two years ago on radio on the station Mansfield 103.2 which is an independent radio station serving the Mansfield area in the UK. Someone overpowered the broadcast signal eight times and played The Wanker's Song.
That's hilarious. I'm actually surprised it doesn't happen more often, but its probably not easy generating 10,000 watt signal from homemade equipment lol

This exactly. It was all so new back then and nobody gave more than a passing thought about system security. Almost an invitation to try. Someone knew a lot to do this, could have been more than one. They might have went on to more nefarious hacking and thus wouldn't want any extra attention given to them so remain silent. But possibly the coolest stunt of the century no matter who and how 😎

That would have scared the fuk out of everyone at the height of the cold war.
started LMAO at NORAD. u need go no further. or maybe NSA LOL
Funny you mention that
Perhaps it was some sort of black ops situation to warn other parts of the government. Maybe some army generals weren’t listening to some cia officials about security threats. Hard to believe that someone with enough expendable income like that would be young enough to dress up like a pop culture icon to do this for shits and giggles.
@@aneubeck4053 i would assume intelligence for who knows why.
Uhhh. So how about when the government literally did that to everyone in hawaii not that long ago? Lol
the message that was sent was you can't control the airwaves. this was at a time before they could control public broadcast syndication because their networks were analog and had no security. they took advantage of this lack of security and their inability to take control of the syndication network very easily and proved they could do it without getting caught. the technical knowledge required to do this type of stunt is a clue to who was involved these people had to be insiders. the performance artist angle may have been someone the technical party enlisted to provide visual content. its funny that nobody really thinks anything beyond this was a silly stunt. this had far larger implications and impact on the syndicated television industry and was done to intimidate the most powerful syndicated television network bosses. .
The 80's were such a magical time.

lol right? I recently subscribed and been getting notifications from him all the time. Not complaining though his channel is very interesting lol
But not too much rest, please 🙏🏼 lol JK ❤️
doom yeah man I’m subscribed to basically every decent true crime/unsolved mystery channel on UA-cam, and even though his channel is newer, it’s easily one of the best.
Christina Cramer lol right? We’re getting spoiled 😂
Matt Pasternak That’s exactly why I subscribed hahaha, he brings more of the underground crimes, stuff I haven’t heard about before.
I know this is an older video, but my gosh, Mike you always get me! Your presentation has the right amount of drama, so much of your experience telling the stories and letting us relax a bit listening to your story.
I don’t care who did it, I hope they still can do it...
I don't know, it's been a good 40 yrs ago if u get my drift....
Everything is digital now. Government mandate. It is possible, but definitely more risky.
No IT security folks back then, but plenty now. Only a deep insider could do this now, and they'd know who it was in nanoseconds.
I was 23 at the time and saw both of them live as they happened.
That had to be quite the experience
Lol what was your reaction after?
dawg what was that like

Video or it didn't happen
Is was never a crime or motive. The Hacker just showed he controls all media... He was an engineer. Just showing his skills
Mark Fennessy Most likely scenario.
That's what I always thought too
It’s highly likely that there were multiple perpetrators involved in this incident. The person who actually interrupted the two stations was working with the people who created the video footage. That would involve a minimum of three people up to four if the engineer wasn’t one of the people who actually created the video. The other three would be the girl with the fly swatter, the masked guy, and the cameraman filming the video.
The guy behind this must feel like a god.
I am a god? No sir. I'm just a man.
😂😂😂 getting spanked on National Television in the 80's!!!! I love him 😂😂😂 HE WON!!!!
The weirdest thing is how upset people were for missing a few minutes while such a coll thing happened that never would happen again.
How does this guy not have 5 million subscribers by now?!?!?! He’s literally the best kept secret channel on UA-cam.
Can we all just say we Love Mike!?
ABSOLUTELY love Mike 💚

nicole lopez Yeah, probably. Idiot. I hate conspiracy theory people.

"Conspiracy people" think, so you don't have to. Phuckin' slave. Don't let Max Headroom interrupt your programming.
It's literally SO 80's that they just "couldnt" figure out who did this. There were 8 channels. Everyone used an antenna. How hard would this have been to find the Public Access station where Randy switched the red and blue cables.
😂
I remember this happening. I lived in northern Illinois at the time and was at my friend T.J.'s house and we were watching Doctor Who. Now in retrospect, I don't blame anyone for interrupting any episode of the Seventh Doctor.
I always thought he did it fir the lols, even though we didn't have that term back then. I was 22 in 1987 and wasn't a fan of Max Headroom.

@Christie Malry I was alive and working in tech. at the time. Please consider that.

Creepy, weird and cheesy, that actually describes this decade, perfectly, I might also add dangerous!
@@carlosmatos9848 It was more likely that STL signal between the station and transmitter site was hacked, which would require a lot less power.
