    • @shaundgb7367
      @shaundgb7367 3 роки тому

      Yeah, I value Test cricket so much more because it is a true contest between bat and bowl, unless of course a pitch is like a road. T20 cricket is fun, quick fix for batting hits but I just do not value it highly. ODI's are good when both teams play their best 11 but this often does not happen except in World Cups. More often that not in last decade a typical ODI series has a team rest 2 or 3 of their best players as schedule is so full with three formats now that you cannot afford to play your best 11. This year has been a bit different with Co-vid as it has resulted in less international matches that more of the ODI's have had teams pick their best 11 against each other. As we saw in dead rubber third ODI this week, that is normal transmission when teams rest a few like Cummins, Bumrah etc etc.
      Test matches there won't be this relaxation of pressure that can happen.
      Losing , winning or drawing a Test match you remember the feeling forever as a fan.
      You could feel the tension of the English fans so clearly in this video in crowd as the end of 5 days was coming down to the wire for them in such an important Test series.

    *This is why the flavour of Test will remain immortal nothing gives a better treat than watching 2 tough nations fighting in a test. Nick I sent u a link of Umpiring horror if you watch the video you will see something most horrendous and unbelievable stuff and why some critical decisions can shift the momentum of whole series. In those days Aus and Eng were very good team specially Australia. Andrew Strauss was a top notch classical test player and Ian Bell too. You already know Aus was packed with legends then. Kevin Pieterson was the dude in that era ...most fancy guy in Cricket* I played EA Sports 2007 Cricket game a lot and most of the commentary chunk of that game is from Ashes such a treat to listen to Mark Nicholas and Ritchie benaud🙏🏻👍🏻

    I am just about to watch and I am so happy you have continued to watch one of the greatest test series over the last 50 years ( yes definitely since the 1970's). The greatest team for 15 years still at its peak (Australia) but old father time about to catch up. England, humiliated for 18 years never beating Australia ( a career lifetime for a sportsperson) had been on the developing and on the upwards curve ever since beating the West Indies at home, then Pakistan in Pakistan and Sri Lanka also in Sri Lanka in 2000 (beating Pakistan and Sri lanka away are so hard and not often done).
    England were no longer a soft team and a legitimate coming power in the world of cricket. Micheal Vaughan ( who had be Englands outstanding player in the Ashes 2002 loss to the Aussies) became captain in 2003. He was innovate and exciting. The stage was set for one of the best test series of cricket ever. Every ball mattered and altered the balance of play through each of those 5 days of the 5 series. And till the last either team could have won.
    So glad you are watching the series.

    A few corrections. There have been 71 Ashes series. Australia have won 33 England have won 32 and 6 draws. Australia dominated the 90's and early 2000's and the 50 odd years Gabe is referring to was Australia winning a Test at Lords not dominating for 50 years.

    It’s hard to describe the hype the 2005 Ashes generated. It was exactly the shot in arm Test Cricket needed at the time, and the entire 2 countries were completely gripped by the series. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th Tests were 3 of the best Tests ever played, and they just happened to be in the same series.

    I remember watching pretty much every minute of the first 4 matches in this series. It was the school holidays and nothing else mattered at that time. Unfortunately the last match was during term time so I couldn't watch all of it. These days nearly all international cricket involving England is on pay to view TV, i.e SKY, rather than free to air Channel 4 or BBC so I watch far less of it than I did back in the day. The 2005 Ashes was hands down the most exciting Test series I have ever watched and I can't imagine that ever changing.

  • @WTBob2005
    @WTBob2005 3 роки тому +2

    Umpires - Bowden is from NZ, and the crooked finger is from severe arthritis. Bucknor is from WI and wasn’t the best late in his career, however, they were both on the elite panel of international umpires of which there were only 12 umpires. So for the best part of a decade, both Bucknor and Bowden were in the best 12 umpires in the world. Bucknor gets a bad rap primarily by Indian fans, and primarily for 1 game. The truth is, in that game there were a few mistakes made, by both umpires, and against both teams. Doesn’t stop the ridiculous hyperbole though....

    The Ashes has never been held by either nation for anywhere near 50/55 years. Leading up to the 2005 Ashes series Australia had held the Ashes for 18 years(I think) which is pretty much the longest. So you factor that into a great series with four of the five matches absolute nailbiters (which are rare themselves in test cricket) and that the series was still alive even on the 5th day of the 5th test and you have without doubt the greatest test series in cricket history. I was at the whole 4th test at Trent Bridge and also at The Oval for the last day of the 5th test. That final day will live with me forever. It was truly amazing.

This was one of the most evenly matched Ashes, and the celebrations when England finally overcame the Old Enemy were unprecedented. Crashed back down to earth when we went to Australia whitewash they beat us 5-0. Billy Bowden has arthritis that is how his hands go. Plus he is a bit of a showman so likes to entertain!

Leading up to the 2005 ashes England had not won an ashes series since 1986/87 so almost 20 years not 50 or 60.

    Billy Bowden was an ok umpire, honestly. he was quite quirky, but never the less he was a good umpire, and that is all that is needed out there in the centre. Bucknor was a very good umpire. His mistakes were highlited because he was umpiring at a period where there was a groundswell of support for more technology in umpiring decisions, so these umpires were kind of in the position of being riden like whipped horses. but, bowden was good and bucknor was very good. as for a draw after five days of cricket, you yourselves were biting your fingernails with tension, imagine if you were there as it unfolded live.... Some of the very best games end in a draw. and it is just that because one team scrapped and held on to secure the draw that imbued the game with such tension. Please, do not put down test matches that end in a draw, they are part of what makes this game beautiful.

    Love your channel guys, just one thing I have to say, Steve Bucknor is one of the best umpires in cricket history not the worst. I understand you've watched his mistakes in a video, but please note most of those mistakes were made before the hawk eye tech came along. Nowadays very few big mistakes are made by the umpires and that in my opinion is mostly due to the tech assist. You guys already know how little time the batsmen, wicket keeper and the slip fielders get after a delivery. Same is true for the umpires. Bottom line, I grew up loving bucknor and shepard, please don't call any of them the worst lol. well end of the day its your reaction and I love every bit of it. Tickets are usually not sold for the 5th day as matches don't always go to a 5th day. If play reaches day 5 tickets usually get sold on a first come first served basis, usually on the cheap. 'A tenner a piece' means that tickets were being sold for £10 each. which is practically giving them away. Back then tickets were usually £60 each for adults. These days its more like £100 a ticket.
    Now whilst 5th day tickets are sold on the cheap the food and drink in the stadium is still rather overpriced. By the time you buy lunch and a few beers you've spent maybe £40-50 plus whatever your travel costs are. For a match like that its still a bargain.

    Nick, the Ashes may have just two teams but one needs to realize sometimes theres history beyond just mere sport. Australia being the land where the Pommies posted anyone from a bread stealer during the great depression to a vicious murderer. Its like Guantanamo for the brits. The grudge developed in the populace at the harsh treatment by the monarchy and deportation at the slightest pretext in those colonial times of world wars and great depressions has transcended sport. It the same as in the US no one calls out their English ancestry , but you would find the Irish Americans proud of their heritage. The Amercian and the white commonwealth way of life is a protest to the monarchy and the British patriarchs. Lots and lots of history, blood and sweat, sir.

    As I've mentioned before, these Hidden Ashes episodes aren't a great way of watching the 2005 series. Yes, they've got some interesting ground level shots and probably work okish for a UA-cam reaction channel, but in no way give a comprehensive enough representation of what went on in each match. For instance, Ponting's fourth innings knock was probably in the top three match saving innings of all time and the footage merely glossed over his achievement. As you guys seem sold on all things cricket, it's imperative you get yourselves the boxed set highlights of the series, if it's only for your own pleasure and appreciation of what an incredible test series this truly was..

    The 4th test match was probs the best of the series. Australia were miles behind but kept fighting

    just listening to the end. Australia held the ashes at the time. So if the series was tied, then Austrailia would retain the ashes. So the draw in 3rd test meant it 1-1 in the series and Australia in the driving seat. Magrath back, England unable to see out the chance to take a decisive lead in the series. Highest level bowling & batting from both sides.
    After 3 games it is advantage Australia. 5 days of every single ball being meaningful. £10 is about $15. There is a history of making day 5 cheap, because sometimes test matches doesn't make the 5th day. Get up early and get a ticket.

    Worst umpires of the 90s/2000s- Aleem Dar, Rudi Koertzen, Russel Tiffin, Billy Bowden, David Orchard. Steve Bucknor was good before he lost his sight and hearing in his last few years.
