Bayonetta: Dodge Offset Explained (TURN ON SUBTITLES)

  • As far as I could tell, there was no dodge offset tutorial on youtube. So I made one.
    Covers the basics on Dodge Offsetting as well as documenting advanced techniques.
    Edit: A lot of this still works in Bayonetta 2, but Taunt Offset, Crow Offset and Accessory Offset has been removed. Regular ol' dodge offset is still the same though. Also, subtitles have been added so you can all stop telling me it's hard to hear what I'm saying.

    I know Kamiya likes to make people learn the game themselves but I still think the initial tutorial of holding the button to increase the combo window is too vague. The game shows you how to do it but doesn't really explain why it's useful which just ends up giving a lot of people the impression that button mashing is the way to go.

    Another awesome trick you can use is when fighting with Shuruba, charged strike moves can actually be charged during a move animation and if done right do not break combos. So when executing an awesome pause combo you can squeeze a cheeky basic charge slash into almost every gap in the combo by holding the button down while she's in the middle of the animation.
    And the wicked weave can also be activated in the middle of a dodge if you hit dodge a split second before Bayonetta has a chance to enter the wicked weave animation.

  • @bbkr2063
    @bbkr2063 Рік тому +2

    Great video showing the most important tip for beginners: Do NOT tap buttons. Hold them. If you are new to this game it will be next to impossible to break natural combo rythm and hold attack button to execute Dodge Offset when you need it. For example try: Punch (hold 1 sec) -> Kick (hold 1 sec) -> Punch (Wicked Weave). Holding attack buttons do not interrupt combos. This way you will always have button held for Dodge Offset when attack is incoming. Literally play like grandma using microvawe. It will be sooooooooo much easier to throw-in Dodge while performing combos. And work your way from there by trying to shorten hold time or skipping it entirely if no immediate attack is brewing.
    Second tip: You do NOT have to hit enemy during combo to perform Wicked Weave. Run away, do few combo moves, hold button on last but one move and when enemy is next to you press last one for Wicked Weave. You will get bad level times but it will help you to learn attack timing.
    Also on the first run pump every money you have into Witch Hearts. Your Dodge Offset will not be perfect when you will start to encounter fierce atacks like from Grace an Glory on very limited space. Prepare to be scratched :)

    Thanks for the video. I went through Non-stop Infinite Climax mode without using dodge offset after having grinded DMC3/4 since I was younger, didn't even try my hand at dodge offset until Bayo 1 got re-released on the Wii U. I think if you start out using the PPPKKP combo as generic filler it's way easier to work yourself up to more advanced stuff.

    Your discussion on the mechanics of Bayo has really grabbed my interest! Reviewers haven’t done the game much justice, other than “it’s cool looking, over the top action, with a sexy protragonist.”
    I confess to be a Souls-Bourne fanboy and haven’t found anything else I enjoy enough on the switch that keeps me interested aside from DSR.

    Hi Yoshesque,
    I've been watching many of your playthroughs and guides, and am practicing bayo. There are still two combos I can't understand and can't find anything on Google.
    They are the 360 degree horizontal spinning kick with guns or kilgore (kkk can show similar result by seems like you have a more powerful shortcut), and the enemy step off of kilgore.
    Do you mind sharing the command of these two movements?
    Cheers!

    • @yoshesque
      @yoshesque  9 років тому +5

      Ben Hu The spinning kick is the bullet climax attack for the feet (rotate left stick + K) performed in the air. To do so, jump, then quickly perform the bullet climax. Very easy once you figure out the timing.
      For enemy step: If you're near an enemy and press the jump button Bayonetta will jump off the enemy (this also resets the jump counter fyi). If you have guns equipped to your feet they will fire, so Scarborough Fair, Onyx Roses, Bazillions and Kilgore will each have a slightly different action associated with enemy step. Enemy step in this game is very generous, so you can experiment yourself by jumping on an Affinity with any of those weapons equipped to the feet.
      NB: Kilgore will only fire every two or three steps (unsure off the top of my head, it's been ages since I played the game), unless you reset by landing on the ground. SF and Bazillions will fire on every enemy step. Not too sure about Onyx Roses, but I believe they fire on every step as well, otherwise, it's the same as Kilgore.
      Hope that helps!

    Cuz I dodge offset in a way that for the kick part of PKP, the kick does not even do the full animation and then I go for WW
    Is it good ? Or should I just make sure that each move can be extended as much as it can be ?

      There's no damage difference of the WW if you dodge offset to the WW part of a combo. Of course, you'll do more damage if you hit with each move in between, but that doesn't seem to be what you're asking about.

    Thanks for the video, looks like I'm hitting practice mode again! I'm just getting into this game after overlooking it for years and I totally suck at it. Currently stuck on my first playthrough at the two golden claw guys in chapter ten. >.

    May I ask how you preform combos that have that light pause in them? In the move list they have a small dot in between them. Also how exactly does Combo scoring work? Do I have to chain my combos by never letting them end? If that's the case whats counted when I get my final score? My overall combo score or is the rating based on how much i was able to do keep together?

    • @yoshesque
      @yoshesque  10 років тому +2

      The easiest way of practicing the timing for pause combos is to use the guns. Say, for the PP-P combo, after the second punch, let the gun spin in her hand before continuing. As a general rule, if you let the gun spin before continuing you'll be able to do the combo. Of course, this doesn't work for kick combos, so that's just a matter of practicing.
      As for combo scoring, I've got a video in the works for that, so just wait until then.

    HI there, this video was super helpful to me, so a lot of thanks for the video. however, I'm having a bit of problem with the animation cancels to get straight to the ww moves like you did one in 4:57(pppppk). is there a trick for animation cancels for a long combo that fast? cause I got the cancels as you did on 4:57 once accidentally(was kinda spamming rt and y and then b). cause it takes a lot of time for me to do that manually with accurate inputs! please help, a bit of explanation would be helpful!

    • @yoshesque
      @yoshesque  5 років тому +2

      Animation cancels are simply a matter of queuing up your inputs correctly. As long as the game recognises that you've hit the P or K button, you can offset the animation, regardless of whether you've actually started the animation at all. So, for instance, if you wanted to get straight to the K in PPPPPK, you would press P -> dodge -> P -> dodge -> P -> dodge -> P -> dodge -> P -> dodge -> K in quick succession. You do need to be fast and accurate to pull off moves like this. There is also an element of memorisation, because you have to remember where you are in the combo, but as I said in the video it all comes down to practice.
      Hope that clears things up!

    Is there any information you could give about weapon sets? Currently it would seem that guns are quite good (especially when dodging). Because I feel that my choice of weapons don't seem to work well enough at the heat of battle. Recommendations?
    My A set in Bayo1: Kulshedra and Durga (mainly fire with that one).
    My B set in Bayo1: Shuraba and Lt. Col. Kilgore.
    I like to use Kulshedra to drag enemies to me or me to them (no need to run everywhere in battle) and I enjoy the high damage output of fire Durga (explosions!) also I'm pretty much prepared for angels on fire.
    Shuraba's charge attack I like it's high damage output, the speed and range. Lt. Col. Kilgore has a high damage output even if enemies are a far.
    Is there something wrong with my sets or am I just not using them right? :/

    • @atmatey
      @atmatey 9 років тому +1

      You can use pretty much any set you want as long as you're good enough. However I see two problems with your sets.
      1) Fire Durga, Kilgore and charged Shuraba all do very high damage but don't give you a lot of combo points. These weapons are useful if there is one enemy that you need to kill really quickly, points be damned (like Joys at the end of verses) but I wouldn't recommend using them against everything, because you will most likely fail to reach the combo requirement.
      2) None of your weapons shoot projectiles while dodge offsetting, which is useful you to keep your combo. This means that if enemies are far away you have to use the handgun button to shoot them and keep your combo going or be really quick with Kulshedra. I personally like to have at least some kind of weapon that shoots bullets while dodge offsetting (Scarborough Fair, Bazillions, Sai Fung etc.), it's a lot less stressful.
      Overall I would recommend that you have at least one set with a quick, low-damage weapon that dodge offsets so that you will get a good combo. I myself tried playing with Shuraba and Kilgore before I learned how to dodge offset. Today I like to use Scarborough Fair the most because keeping your combo going is easy and playing with them looks great with Bayonetta's fighting/dance moves and bullets flying everywhere.

    With normal Dodge Offsetting would negative-edging the attack button after the dodge (basically continuing to hold the attack button while in the dodge animation then releasing the attack button right after the animation into another attack button) work ?

    • @atmatey
      @atmatey 8 років тому +4

      +Nathanael Eugene No it wouldn't, the way I understand negative-edging is that releasing a button that was being pushed activates the attack instead of pressing it. However there is no way to punch, kick or create a wicked weave by releasing a button, it must be pushed.
      Sure you can dodge and keep the attack button held down and run around for a while but then releasing the button won't activate an attack.
      What you are describing sounds just like regular dodge offset, since to dodge offset you keep an attack button held down, dodge, release the button and then press an attack button again to continue the combo.

    well now, so this is what Dodge Offset does. I must say, this is quite astounding. time to blow the dust of Bayonetta and see if i can't bump a few of those golds into platinums. would you happen to have any advice on how to wield the whip and odette effectivly, by the way?

    • @Lycanthromancer1
      @Lycanthromancer1 4 роки тому

      The whip is mainly for battlefield control with lots of enemies (it's good for swinging enemies at other enemies and killing the swung-at enemies stupidly fast with lots of combo points); do this by knocking an enemy's armor partway off (as armor tends to block your whip attacks), then hold the punch button and pressing back on the control stick mid-hold. It's also good for staying in the air for long periods of time by holding punch while in the air near an enemy. It's good for those stupid air-manta ray things, since they're hard to hit otherwise, and it's good for flaming enemies, since you can hit them without being hurt.
      A bit niche, but it shines when it's useful. It's especially great with Grace and Glory. Get them both grouped together after you've knocked the armor partly off of one, dodge for witch time, then do the lasso-swing on it to basically one-shot-kill the other one.
      Oh, and the lasso-swing deflects projectiles by hitting the projectile with the enemy you're swinging around.
      Haven't played with Odette, since I haven't gotten to that part of the game yet. (I just got the game a couple of days ago.)

    Do you have to hold down punch or kick the whole time you're doging, or does the button only need to be down when you press dodge? In other words, can you release punch or kick during the dodge animation?

    • @atmatey

      Yes you can, just make sure you pressed dodge WHILE holding punch/kick.
