That game was such a joke until the team finally woke up in the 4th quarter. The Metrodome was never a great stadium for a college football game. But it was hard for me to not like that place since Michigan was 11-0 all time at that venue. Michigan had to play Friday night at the Metrodome in 1991 as well because the Twins were playing in the World Series at home the following day. Glad the Gophers have their own on campus stadium so this problem doesn't arise anymore.
Oh I remember this one. A massive collapse on the part of the Gophers, just a colossal choke job. John Navarre looking like Tom Brady against the Falcons in the 4th Qtr.
A similar thing happened to the Cincinnati Bengals in 1990 (an upcoming JG9 vid?), they played their week six game against the Oilers in Houston due to the NLCS. While there wouldn't have been a game on Sunday at Riverfront Game 7 was scheduled for Saturday night, and there wasn't enough time for the changeover (it was moot as the Reds won it in six) The JG9 part of this would be that this gave the Bengals five straight (and thus the entire month of October) on the road, the last time to date an NFL team has played more than three straight away from home in the regular season. They still ended up winning the AFC Central.

@@dumbguy6843 I agree given that year's game, but that was only one loss and wouldn't have mattered because Iowa already lost 3 conference games and were out of the picture. MN would have been 6-2 alongside Michigan, Ohio State, and Purdue, the latter two were off the Gophers' schedule.
You didn't mention but some people might not know that the Minnesota Vikings also shared(with highest priority) the Metrodome with the Twins(second priority) and the Golden Gophers(last priority) , though the Vikings had a bye week but the real reason they could not move to sunday was TV deals.
So, a couple questions that I have. One: When is the NCAA College Football schedule released every year? It has to be around the time as the NFL schedule, or even before since their season starts earlier. So, in 2003 context, we're talking about mid-April at the latest. The MLB Season is just starting at that point so it's impossible to predict how a team's going to be that early in the season. Coming off a season like the Twins had the year before, even in April you can assume they were going to be just as good. Two: You forgot to mention that the Minnesota Vikings also used the Metrodome at the time. How did work the schedule among those three teams? I'm assuming that early in the Football season, while baseball was still going on, the Gophers and Vikings played at home the same weekend. The Gophers on Saturday. The Vikings on Sunday. I don't know what the schedule was for the Vikings in 2003 so I don't know if they had a home game that weekend, but if they did, wouldn't that mean that they would have had to convert the turf after the Twins game Saturday night to Football for Sunday afternoon and then back for baseball Sunday night, especially since they knew before Game Three that there was going to be a Game Four since the series was tied at one going into Game Three? Finally, I had to check the Minnesota Twins 2003 because I was unclear if you said it was the ALDS (American League Division Series) or ALCS (American League Championship Series). Either way, there would have been a Game Three regardless. Now, you were correct in saying that it was the ALDS. However, looking at the scroll at the bottom of the screen I saw the Cubs and Florida appear periodically. Now, I'm sure we all know that the two teams played each other in the 2003 NLCS, but if the Minnesota/Michigan game was played during the ALDS, the NLCS wouldn't have started, and I know they weren't in Florida for Game One (the scroll had the Marlins as the home team) because the Cubs hosted Games One, Two, Six and Seven. Were these highlights from a different Minnesota/Michigan game from another year? It would have had to have been early in the season while the MLB Season was still going on because the Cubs and Marlins never faced each other in the playoffs other than 2003.
The alcs in 2003 was Yankees redsox. Aaron Boone hit a walk off homer in game 7. The twins lost the ds in 3 games to the Yankees. The highlights on screen are probably from a later airing of the game, maybe a few days or A week later. By then the nl and alcs would’ve been well under way.
I remember this game vividly as a teenager, but had no idea the drama that preceded this game, nor did I recall that it was on a Friday night. Minnesota was a power running team back then. They had running QBs who could also throw, like Asad Abdul-Khaliq in this game, and multiple power backs on the roster at any time. They had big receivers outside that you had to account for, too, like Ernie Wheelwright and Aaron Hosack. Michigan fans refer to this game as the "Buffalo Stampede" Game, referring to QB Navarre's reception and rumble into the endzone behind almost the entire offensive line. This may be one of the games/reasons that college football players today mostly, if not absolutely, have their class schedules set up so they do not have any classes on Friday at all to accommodate all the Thursday night, Friday night, and now longer travel for Saturday games today. Now that the Twins, Vikings, and Gophers each have their own (all very nice) venues, this is no longer an issue. The Gophers baseball team even used the venue through the start of the Major League season while the Twins were in spring training to escape the brutal Minnesota weather during mid-February (when the college baseball season starts), and March before the Twins came back for regular season play.
Multi-purpose stadiums are basically extinct today for this very reason. Minnesota figured that out finally and they have a very nice football stadium now. I've been there and it's awesome. With that said, Friday nights are for high school varsity games. Not Michigan football. Especially against Minnesota. Also, Michigan games at the metronome used to be home games for Michigan anyway.
Its amazing that I stumbled upon this recalling the day in my 91-92 health class where Hubert H's son Skip kept eyeballing me while he was taking time off from being Atty General and noting before light up signs took over the Metrodome entrance tunnel the lengths that maintenance staff would take to either cover up the 'Metrodome Minneapolis-We Like It Here' sign which when our family was 'required' to move back to MN just after The Football Gophers played Oklahoma on TBS+/TNT(Soon)/Who wants to pay us to air CFB live' then in 85. All signs point to Carl Pohlad where starting mid 90's both Twins and Gophers were partners MSC/Domevision/WCCO2 and after Twins racking up planned losing seasons in th 90's most likely after being told Carl you can no longer run team Twins as tax-write off or we start breaking up your trusts, I'm sure Carl tried giving up the ship around 2000. Pohlad on his own started to try to fold the franchise which meant no need to renew TV deals as I am outta here and let me know when we are contracted. In doing so MLB in 2002 would have to play 2nd fiddle to Gophers. Of course Pohlad as to save face tried making his own MSC TV (Victory Sports) in 2003 (or around that time) which for MN sports fans was ridiculous as other than the Twins the network would double up on ESPNNEWS.
“We can’t have a game on Friday! It’s not fair to our student athletes.” “We’ll give you money!” “Will that be for our student athletes?l “Of course not! This is an amateur sport. You’ll just have to keep that money yourself.” “OK sounds good! Problem solved!”
Even if no bye week and not caring about academics or TV coverage or anything, just CONSISTENCY alone in schedule can be very important, just like a consistent sleep schedule or practicing on the field you play on.
I grew up a Michigan fan (eventually got to go there for school too!) and I lived in the Twin Cities as kid. Seeing this game live is one of my all time favorite UM moments. In the Michigan section, a Metrodome security guard came and took a wheelchair-bound Michigan fan's hat when they were up 14 - 0. He waved it around taunting us, but was booed relentlessly and gave it back. Needless to say, that jerk was nowhere to be seen during the 4th quarter. Gotta love some karma, GO BLUE!
Wow, how weird. I grew up a Michigan fan (grandpa played there and a lot of my family schooled there) but actually lived out in Stillwater, Minnesota. My grandpa and some other family would always come out for Michigan games against Minnesota to visit so we were all at this game in the Michigan section too. My aunt was that wheelchair bound fan who's hat was stolen. Small world I guess.
@@TheLoos3Goos33 Oh my gosh, the smallest world! I've remembered that story for years, thanks for reaching out and sharing that it was your family. Wonderful to make these connections, even almost 20 years later.
Unfortunately, that year doesn't really count because they, were, playing, The, Moneyball, Athletics, somebody had to, win, Dave Justice's last season, they, lost, to the Yankees' Kryptonite, the Angels, in, The, ALCS, after, the season, they chose Torii Hunter over David Ortiz, you know the rest.
@@matthewdaley746 you can't really blame them for that though. At the time, Ortiz was a middle of the road DH with little defensive value who was going to be getting 2 million in arbitration. Hunter was one of the best outfielders in the game. There's literally no one who saw the trajectory of Papi's career coming if we're being honest with ourselves. Hindsight is 20/20 of course, but then it was not so simple
@Matthew Bless There, was, a touch of sarcasm in that, besides, steroids, were, the real catalyst, for, his power, ironically, The, Moneyball, Athletics, beat the Twins in 2006.
Ah yes the good old days and if it was not for Adam Kennedy of the Angels having a Reggied Jackson stretch of games that he never duplicated again they might have made the World Series again. They were actually a very good young team, but nobody remembers losers in championship series.
@Richard Lug They beat Barry Bonds, (with, a little help from Dusty Baker), I loved that, and, they didn't have, a, single, HOFer, either, truly awesome.
Forgot that 2002 there was an earlierTwins Gophers playoff conflict where in this case the Gophers were set to play in the evening and the day MLB playoff game would need to be suspended/resumed as the dome staff would need time to convert field AND Gophers were relevant so letting the football game commence without the outfield bleachers would start a war with the football ticket holders. Also in 2002 rekindled old controversies (i.e. SMU playing at Texas Stadium Tulane at Superdome, etc) and mixing professional entertainment with NCAA. Folllowing that heartbreak (as a Gopher fan) Gophers had to play State in East Lansing. Maybe a little cover up on Carr's part as about 10-12 years later he was playing concussed QB in game (see Minnesota started it making student athletes play without enough time between games) and he was fired a week or two after that game.
I'm not sure I get the drama being specifically with Michigan and the Twins. For instance, did Carr or anyone from Michigan actually say anything bad about them? Regardless, it's better now that all three teams have separate venues. To add double insult to injury, the Vikings 2003 bye was that Sunday in question. But with the advance scheduling needed to avoid conflict it really didn't make a difference.
No, he's over-hyping hate to get views. They didn't hate the twins as it wasn't their fault the MLB insisted the game be played on Saturday and the Twins surely had no reason to hate the wolverines as they did get their way. Now, whom ever had to payout the expenses could hate the Big Ten, as that was the deal.
So when do we get the baseball channel next then? Also worth noting just how many things the Mettrodome hosted as well. Even if it didn't collapse it would still have sat empty I eel
Another reason they did not do weeknight games was the stadium did not even have fixed lights until what 2011 when they played Notre Dame under the lights.
@@BrandoniousCast U-M did it every year for games from October on. It was no big issue. The reason there were no permanent lights until 2011 was simply because U-M didn't want to play night games, period.

Carr: "We will not play on Friday it's against everything we stand for, we will not play on Friday. I will not comprimise my principles. Unless you pay me."
Still trying to figure out your point to all of this. Are you blaming the twins and the Gophers loss on Michigan not wanting to play on Friday but inevitably playing on friday?
To be fair to Carr, his quote about changing the perspective was clear that he was still pissed off. He said he trusted the commissioner to do what's best for the BIG TEN. Basically, he said, he trusts the commissioner to focus on making money and not giving a damn about the student part of "student athlete". In the end, Carr lost because money talks. Still resulted in a memorable game.

Given the history of Minnesota Gopher football in the last 60 years, I don’t think any loss by Minnesota would send shockwaves throughout the big 10. Especially against Michigan.
Wasn't the case until after 2002. Twins was facing a potential playoff game suspension as MLB assigned the playoff game during day and where Gophers had the evening game scheduled.

Weak take on Carr. That's just how negotiations work, you always have to 100% demand what you want and end up compromising in the end.
No, not a Minnesota team choking to an inferior opponent. Minnesota Sports never do that.
Rest in peace to Marion Barber III
It’s not fair to our student athletes.”
“We’ll give you money!”
“Will that be for our student athletes?l
“Of course not! This is an amateur sport. You’ll just have to keep that money yourself.”
“OK sounds good! Problem solved!”
Anyone else notice on crawl (2003) no AL news until 4th Quarter AND ESPN airing the NBC Notre Dame game?
Even if no bye week and not caring about academics or TV coverage or anything, just CONSISTENCY alone in schedule can be very important, just like a consistent sleep schedule or practicing on the field you play on.
I mean...Friday Night Games are still fun albeit more for High School but still its the weekend!
Sounds like Michigan’s beef should be with MLB, not the Twins
Meat Loaf references and the same one as well in both videos today

Ah, 2002... back when the twins could win a playoff game... it's been a rough, really rough 18 game losing streak
Now, this is impossible, since the gophers, vikings, and twins all have their own stadiums.
The Twina and the Gophers shared the Metrodome with the Vikings. Today they play in three different facilities (and the Metrodome is no more).
Baseball always holds the greatest stories. More pls :)
LOL at listening to college coaches pretend they care one iota about academics
This sounds like both all in effect were in the right here. And all was fine in the end.
Academics mattered more then.... its telling and coach carr is a good rolemodel..
Baseball channel, if all goes according to plan, will come in early 2023
@@JaguarGator8 Can you also do NHL and NBA Content?
I am sure some one higher up in the Conference or the University talked to Loyd Carr.
Another reason they did not do weeknight games was the stadium did not even have fixed lights until what 2011 when they played Notre Dame under the lights.
Usually they had to rent portable lights when games took place at 330 and kept going during the night. Such as 2004 MSU and 2005 PSU
@@imkool51391 absolutely and according to people who set those up it was a nightmare.
@@BrandoniousCast U-M did it every year for games from October on. It was no big issue.
The reason there were no permanent lights until 2011 was simply because U-M didn't want to play night games, period.
If I remember correctly it was Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 3 Games to 1 Sunday October 5th 2003 and Why was Michigan-Minnesota game moved up Friday October 10th 2003
I believe it's because the NCAA requires the kickoff times be set for football games at least six days in advance.
As a Michigan State fan, I really hate it when good things happen to U-M.

Same here, but I’m an Ohio State fan.
@@matthewdaley746 I mean, to be fair, in recent years the Spartans football team has really developed a winning culture, though, and I’m very proud indeed to see that Mel Tucker is intent on continuing that tradition which his predecessor, the great Mark Dantonio built up. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see them in the playoffs this post season and seriously contending for a national championship.
Also, as for actually winning, well how about that 2014 Rose Bowl? 😄
@A. Grimes In, the, last, twenty, years, The, National, Championship, has, been, won, by, a, Northern, team, exactly, twice, so, things, could, be, worse.
When you have so many tenants in a venue, someone's gonna be at the bottom of the booking priority list. There's nothing Minnesota could've done but what it ended up doing after MLB forced its hand.
2008, RNC, history, repeats.
It's not even the first time a Michigan-Minnesota game got moved to a Friday due to Twins postseason baseball. Happened i '91 during the WS, too.
@@pronkb000 The Twins, at least, had, MLB's, second-best, record, in, 1991, 1987, saw eight teams finish, with, better records, and, five of them, didn't make the, Playoffs, Divisional Play, was, "fair-er," but, it, wasn't, perfect.
In 1987 Minnesota’s home game against Indiana was moved to Friday Night due to Game One of the World Series. That game didn’t conflict with any high school games though as it was MEA week where almost all games are played Wednesday Night with a few games on Thursday Night.

Leave it to Michigan to whine about something 🤣🤣🤣
The Twins getting eliminated by the New York Yankees seemed to happen every fucking year in the mid 2000's.
Another thing that could have been avoided if they simply didn't tear down Memorial Stadium in Minneapolis.....
My god, how did you make a fourteen minute video out of this?? lol.

This is exactly why college and pros should never share a stadium.
Sounds like they should have sport specific stadiums (they do now) and actually force NFL stadiums to let colleges play there. Stadiums are crazy expensive
Lmao Carr is an absolute clown
Exactly 12 years earlier the Twins nearly got preempted by some boring Senate hearing. I believe it was about sexual harassment.
Meanwhile, the Gophers choked.
Stupid question but didn't the Gophers have their own stadium on campus?
Not at the time of this game
Given the history of Minnesota Gopher football in the last 60 years, I don’t think any loss by Minnesota would send shockwaves throughout the big 10. Especially against Michigan.
Silly long drawn out explanation of a "what could have happened" scenario.
Why does baseball always get priority in scheduling conflicts? (I get it here, but I don’t understand why that’s always the case.)
Wasn't the case until after 2002. Twins was facing a potential playoff game suspension as MLB assigned the playoff game during day and where Gophers had the evening game scheduled.
I'm glad that no teams in the TC share anymore except Lynx and Wolves but they have opposite schedules
Might be happening again soon, Wolves want a new arena and they would probably have to share the X for 2 years with the Wild while it gets built.

I completely agree with Lloyd Carr. Have you seen how high Michigan’s Academic standards are? It’s up there with the Ivy League.
They don't call it the Harvard of the Midwest for nothing!
I'll bet there was an unspoken condition. Say no game now, that means you forfeit.
If one two teams have a scheduling conflict, who wins? I dunno. But I know who loses- the taxpayer, as we just buy new stadiums for teams that play 6 home games a year.
Weak take on Carr. That's just how negotiations work, you always have to 100% demand what you want and end up compromising in the end. In the marching band we occasionally missed class, if we had an exam during a road game the music professors would proctor in a hotel room. There will never be a Friday game in Ann Arbor, I would bet the big house on that.
As someone who dislikes both Michigan and the Twins (I'm from Wisconsin), I HAVE to see this.
Sad to hear you hate Michigan. Go packers and brewers at least?
