not really.....google isnt selling chromebooks anymore and when they were they didnt mind competing with samsung asus hp acer or lenovo before. Google could even sell u the lil kit to do it......for that matter you already can with a hd capture via usb c device on googles latest tablet.
I would love a phone that could dualboot into ChromeOS. Mainly for the desktop Chrome browser instead of the mobile version. And if it ran the Linux container even more bonus points.
I don't know how I missed this video, but this was a great one! I would love to see desktop mode come to pixel. I've been thinking more about the Pixel Fold recently and that functionality would be fantastic. It might even come close to the Surface Duo experience!
Motorola ready for is a great example for desktop mode, and you can hook up to external display via wired and wireless, Shane if you haven't tried it in a while I can send you a Motorola device that I know you can set it up way better than I can. 😊
If ChromeOS integrate Android and Linux through vm (is it called crostini?), Google could do similarly with Android, as Android now has a built in virtualization framework (since Android 13). It means, Google could host a ChromeOS vm on the Android phone, just like the ChromeOS host an Android vm. Then as you say, just clicking on the desktop mode on the notification tiles, users will be presented with full-blown ChromeOS on an external monitor.
I respectfully suggest that Google consider cloning the Chromebook user interface to its native Android desktop, as it would make the platform more inviting to users, even if some features may not be feasible to implement.
One of the things I've yet to find a replacement for is that when you use dex, you can use your phone as a touchpad to your desktop mode. Does anyone know of an app that would do this? (Note: there are a million apps that let you use your phone as a touchpad to other devices, but not one that you can use in desktop mode). I have a pair of xreal glasses that were amazing with dex, but really suck with the one plus open.
It would be awesome if Google designed the desktop experience to work with AR glasses like the Xreal Air 2 Ultra. The ability to have floating windows with pinch to control the interface like Apple Vision Pro would be great as well.
Dex + XReal = Already Real and Awesome. hmm didnt check if these glasses supported Wireless DEX. That would uber cool. dont mind carrying a power bank to power both
There is some points why they don't do it: 1l This will be rival to Windows or Mac, maybe they have loyalty contract 2l This will down sells of laptops, maybe they have loyalty contract 3l They CPU is so bad and all interface will be lagging
ChromeOS would be an improvement, but it's still not a Windows replacement. Google needs to give ChromeOS better functionality, including getting real desktop apps designed for the OS.
Will desktop mode kill the battery tho? For example, laptops run off wall power when plugged in, not the battery. Not so smartphones. When plugged in, they still run off the battery while charging it.
1) can set to not charge more than 85% 2) Software Bypass charging feature (available from s21 i suppose) on Good Lock settings or hardware bypass port (maybe like asus phone) should solve it
i dont think it would be redudent using chrome os.....it already does sooo much like running linux enviroment and most android apps.....i think this would be the best approach but in my 30 yrs exp in IT. its rare that giant companies take the correct approach its more of a cobbled together approach to test the market. just like dex was when it first came out plus windows mobile had continuum.
What you think, Is there any chance that Google will enable wired connection to external monitor on pixel tablet like they did on pixel 8? It would be enough for me without desktop mode😂
@@scaryifliteral oh crap. What a missed opportunity.. it's already has a charging dock with speakers so with an external monitor and a Bluetooth keyboard+ mouse you get a setup which is enough for the majority of the people.. maybe pixel tablet 2
all in one is always the idea. i’m pretty sure google has planned to merge chromeOS and Android together in their oven. but with all the resources they have, it just seems they are not willing to get anything done. that’s ridiculous.
It would eat into their ChromeBook sales. Samsung wouldn't like it because it would eat into their tablet and GalaxyBook sales. They created a desktop mode useable enough to get stuff done, but unusable enough to make it preferable to use a laptop. Eventually someone will make it work and these companies will have to concede. They might even find out it doesn't hurt their laptop and tablet sales like they think it will.
@@hermanwooster8944 these corps are just buying their time. apple doesn’t want to lose ipad dominance, that’s why we are not seeing any iphone foldables. but all in one is the mega trend. no company can stop it.
Here's what I think Google should do... They should collaborate with Samsung to create a standard for ALL flagship and high mid-range Android devices. The way I see it, Samsung does it the best, and a collaboration with Google can take things to the next level! What do you reckon?
@@JeanRivau DeX is 'mediocre'? Have you actually used it? 😆Well, no worries if you think DeX is 'mediocre'. I personally find that DeX makes a major difference in productivity! Anyway, here's hoping for some major improvements for Desktop Mode / DeX.

Full Desktop OS is not going to happen with Android devices. Samsung, Google etc...want to sell people on a second Windows/Chrome OS laptop instead. Smaller hardware makers ought to consider offering full LinuxOS Phone/Tablets as a proper third option.
I have been saying this about DeX for years - what's the use case? Who has a monitor, keyboard and mouse but no computer? And it certainly doesn't make sense for mobile computing... It's far easier to carry a laptop or tablet than all the accessories needed to make DeX work. It's a neat parlor trick but, in the real world, no one I know with a Samsung phone ever uses DeX.
You're drawing up a worst-case-scenario and then shooting it down though. There are TVs everywhere and you don't need a mouse or a keyboard. You can do everything with your phone as a trackpad and keyboard. At worst, you need to carry one cable that you might already be carrying. Dex related videos do well, people are using it even if you don't know them.
This video was filmed before the Android 15 Beta improvements to desktop mode. Encouraging news!
Linux on DeX held such promise. Would love a full desktop browser on Android, closest it gets is Kiwi Browser.
Have you tried Vivaldi or Samsung Internet? Both function like desktop browsers on Dex for me.
@@bernard3089 Kiwi is the only one I know of that allows you to use every extension from the Chrome Web Store and ones from GitHub as well.
Kiwi browser supports all chrome extensions and side loaded extensions and also has developer mode like desktop chrome @bernard3089
Samsung doesn't want a full Desktop operating system on their Galaxy tablets/phones.
Just like Apple, they want to sell people on a Laptop as well.
I like the idea of a Kiwi browser. All the flavor and greatness of the Internet brought to you by the fine people of New Zealand.
There's a third party app called taskbar that will provide a taksbar in desktop mode.
