Just before anyone asks... My old white E28 sold the day the ad went up. I held it for the buyer until a couple of weeks ago, and we filmed this before it left. But she's long gone!

Pro Tip: If you have a stripped allen, get a set good torx bit that is a little larger, hammer it into the allen bolt, then impact off.
you could also get a dremel and grind a cross pattern and use a philips head to get it out
You better be a pro... and have access to Snap-On level replacement. If you do that with most torx bits, they won't have much 'torx' left to them!
i welded (sacrificed) a harbor freight torx bit onto the stripped allen and took it off.
That driver's side profile going down the road looking through the interior and seeing the rear window louvers .... Perfection
I remember being like 18 years old and discovering the Stance|Works blog and scrolling until I couldn't even process images and words anymore and to this day I remember the impact Jeremy's E28 had on me. Up until then I couldn't choose between japanese sports cars (the classics, Supras, RX7's and the like) or old squarebody german cars, but when I saw his car I knew where my heart was INSTANTLY. It's admirable how he managed to keep that car in such pristine condition for so long, making it better along the way. Kudos to him, and kudos to you for the amazing builds and content over the span of those years as well.

Great episode. The MOMENT you mentioned the fit issue with the center caps my brain immediately went to set screws right down to three of them located by the jaws on the lathe. I guess great minds think alike and the simple solutions are often best.
Great video. Good to know that Stanceworks is still relatable to the common hobbyist as well as professional mechanics. I met you at Vintage several years ago when you brought your slammed e24. Videos like this and your employee's white 535 kinda make me want to get another e28 again.

We use to machine a groove in our race wheels (motorcycle) for a retaining clip that held the spacers into place. This along with quick change set up made for short work of wheel changes for the Daytona 200

Also, the news about Chloe got me down bad. I never met her but I feel her loss. Made me want to hug my own pups hard. It sucks they live so little. But Chloe at least lived big! Thank you Mike for providing awesome content for years, inspiring us and specially for providing Chloe with a fun, loving life.
This is one car I honestly believe we need a build thread/breakdown of. It has set the trend of the V8 swap into e28s and it has held that title to date. Other than that, this is a dope video❤
So fun to see Jeremy again on your channel, I still have the old video of his e28 on my hardrive from many years ago. The one with song from Kanye West, saw it around 15-16. I watched it on repeat and it started my admiration for e28s, I never got to buy one, but I'm happy with my e39. Hope to see him more :)

omg those oldskool beemers look so good in that proper stance with a nice set of wheels, ive always since the early 90s had a soft spot for those models and E30s. Convertable metalic burgundy with cream leather sends me into a midlife crisis but the black or white standard cars have a similar effect 😦
Hey Mike. For the brake rotor screw, a set of rota broach bits make getting those off pretty easy.
I'm so motivated to build my royal blue metallic 535is. I already have a B35 on the engine stand. I just hate how ridiculous the euro bumper prices have gotten. Some small company is missing out on a small fortune because they haven't figured out how to make replica sets.

A little trick that I learned trying to get the stripped smaller allen bolts out is by using an automatic center punch. Try to aim the furthest away from the center for better chance

On both my E28's I've always went with Spax Springs and Bilstein shocks because living in DC at the time Coilovers was too low for those potholes and Garage Ramps/Entrance
I watched real quick and skipped over the content, but I had to stop in and say, what a beautiful fucking car. Wow.
I’ve had really good luck with the Milwaukee cobalt bits. I firmly believe there are some tools not worth cheaping out on, and drill bits are on the list. I’ve had one drill to a a half inch hole without a pilot, and also drill to a broken extractor then the flutes immediately grabbed on the extractor and literally snapped it out of the bore lol. And was still sharp enough to keep drilling. Obviously not the recommended use case, but I’ve been VERY happy with them.
On the center caps. You could have went into the wheel center and cut a groove to match the cap. It would have locked into place. Two groove even better. Just my 2 cents.

Those coilovers are simply stunning.
one way to try to remove rounded up allen head is to use slightly bigger torx-head that you hammer it in the rounded hole hard and use impact screwdriver. it not always work but worth a try before drilling.

You may have done this and I couldn’t see it, but you should use cone point set screws to hold those caps in. They’ll dig into the magnesium centers a bit to provide a better hold than just normal set screws. Granted this may be a little excessive/redundant because you still have one of the o-rings present from the initial design of the caps.

caps for e50 are provided from BBS . I've on mine ;) they are in plastic but original BBS
Hammer a slightly oversized Torx bit into a stripped Allen head. It works surprisingly well, and is my go-to fix for that problem.
As much as I'm very much willing to fanboy over this E28, my heart and soul will always belong to the E30

future idea for HR... since they already produce coils with new spindles. do ones with a offset upper caliper bolt hole, so you could run any newer e39/e38 brakes bolt on without extra parts. opens up alot of options including brembos that are newer, better condition and more available...
One of the best skills I was ever taught was how to sharpen drills, still got a box full of random blunt bits

Buy a set of Easy-Outs and when the drill bits break a set of reverse twist drill bits. Neither is too expensive. About half the time the screw/bolt comes out when drilling the hole.
Use a chisel at an angle on the edge of the brake retaining screw. A couple good hits and it will break free.

Every time you do coilovers I die a little more inside at the fact my car doesn't have a well engineered solution for them. I guess to be honest though there's not really engineered solutions out there for anything on this thing.

Every time I see Jeremy’s car, I immediately head to eBay to try and find a black E28
You don't need a high end set of drill bits. Any set will do. You need to learn how to sharpen them! I can do it with a cutoff wheel on a grinder, but a bench grinder is much easier. Just have a go, make sure your tip is centred, make sure your heels aren't higher than you chisel and if it doesn't bite, have another go until it does. I still screw up from time to time and its good to run the bits through a sharpening machine every now and then to correct the angles, but I've been using the same cheap bit set for years now. When I break one I replace it with a good cobalt bit, but its largely the same set.

Yes, you need good drill bits. But a variety of easy outs could come in handy as well. I usually try the quick and easy before going to the drill. And I feel you on the machine envy. I used to work at a place that had me machining titanium and stainless steel, the two metals most likely to work harden, on hobby level machines. I called bullshit and got fired by text. What can ya do?
