  • We take a day trip to the site of the Battle of Verdun, to The Ossuary memorial, the destroyed village of Douaumont, and to Fort Douaumont,
    From Wikipedia:
During the 300 days of the Battle of Verdun (21 February 1916 - 19 December 1916) approximately 230,000 men died out of a total of 700,000 casualties (dead, wounded and missing). The battle became known in German as Die Hölle von Verdun (English: The Hell of Verdun), or in French as L'Enfer de Verdun, and was conducted on a battlefield covering less than 20 square kilometers
The ossuary is a memorial containing the remains of both French and German soldiers who died on the Verdun battlefield. Through small outside windows, the skeletal remains of at least 130,000 unidentified combatants of both nations can be seen filling up alcoves at the lower edge of the building.
Douaumont is a commune in the Meuse department in Grand Est in north-eastern France. The village was destroyed during World War I.
Fort Douaumont (French Fort de Douaumont) was the largest and highest fort on the ring of 19 large defensive works which had protected the city of Verdun, France since the 1890s. By 1915, the French General Staff had concluded that even the best-protected forts of Verdun could not resist bombardments from the German 420 mm (16.5 in) Gamma guns. These new super-heavy howitzers had easily taken several large Belgian forts out of action in August 1914. Fort Douaumont and other Verdun forts were judged ineffective and had been partly disarmed and left virtually undefended since 1915. On 25 February 1916, Fort Douaumont was entered and occupied without a fight by a small German raiding party comprising only 19 officers and 79 men. The easy fall of Fort Douaumont, only three days after the beginning of the Battle of Verdun, shocked the French Army. It set the stage for the rest of a battle which lasted nine months, at enormous human cost. Douaumont was finally recaptured by three infantry divisions of the Second Army, during the First Offensive Battle of Verdun on 24 October 1916. This event brought closure to the battle in 1916.

I would absolutely love to go to Verdun and see and experience all the history there. It’s so beautiful and peaceful now, it’s hard to imagine the absolute horror that it was and I am sure that everyone that goes there can feel the heaviness of what happened there.

Yet another video packed with information. The atmosphere was oozing round every corner, especially the marks on the gun tops outside.
Thank you and keep up the good work..
    Regards,
    Michael

Hi Bob, we’ve enjoyed watching your trip so far. One question: you don’t seem to use levellers for your motor home, don’t you find them necessary

We are sat here, Thursday, with torrential rain after the storm winds, with the same to look forward to on Friday ? Make the most of the good weather ! Have been looking at the split air conditioning systems for Motorhomes/Caravans priced at about £650, portable systems ? May be worth looking for at the NEC show ? Do not know much about the History of the First World War but can be very sentimental if you have family ties. My grandad was gassed in the trenches , what a horrific place to be. Know that the Germans were very good builders, this fort battlement just goes to prove that right, pity about the political believes of the German people during the first and second world wars ? You are right, you could spent a lot of time going round these battlefields, maybe a good idea to have courses for the younger generation to do a tour, away from modern technology, i-phones, tablets etc !

Colin Humphries my grandad and his brothers were in the First World War. My grandad was wounded and captured at the Third Battle of Ypres/Ieper on 31/07/1917 when 75% of his Regiment ( Hertfordshire) was either killed wounded or captured. Have recently found his POW records and discovered he was treated at a hospital in Belgium and then taken to a camp at Limburg in Germany.

Strange we we're just talking about air con, as it was hot when we stopped at Duoaumount. The 12v/240v ones are incredibly expensive, around £3000, whereas the 240v only are much cheaper, but you can't use then when you're off grid. Interesting to have a look at the NEC.

we left the Battlefield in Verdun and went to a village to stay the night when we woke in the morning we were right next to a French Cemetery lol the place is full of death But so worth doing the British Battle fields don't have the same feeling as Verdun its a place on its own you Massiges is worth seeing we were there last week its a good visit

you should invest in a bike rack and 2 electric pedal assist bikes next time maybe so parking isn't hard to do. Just a thought
