Ms. Song is professionally trained in Korean traditional style of singing call ‘창(Chang)’ from very young age. In this performance, she is mixing modern singing styles with her Korean traditional singing techniques so beautifully. This song is about feeling of missing love one who left. (Looking up the night sky, seeing halo around the moon, the signs of cold raining next day & wondering where the love one are.) Thank you for your wonderful reaction & analysis!
Song So-hee is famous for her breath control. She holds a long clear note for an impossibly long time, then continues with flourishes on the same breath.
Some people seem to know her as a pansori singer but actually she's a minyo singer. Pansori and minyo are two different genres in Korean traditional music.
Your breakdown of the pansori/gugak style singing is so impressive given your first listen. This vocal style is 500 or more years old and takes a life time of training to master. It is not a naturally acquired tone. And you broke it down so articulately!
I LOVE Song So Hee. This traditional style of music is so emotionally powerful and she delivers that flawlessly every time she performs. I'm so so so glad you chose to listen to her! And it's so cool to hear what you think is going on vocally, because I've wondered about it for a long time.
oh yes please do a reaction to her spring day cover it is haunting and beautiful in performance. she is such a good singer. she has a very distinct unique voice. she is clearly talented.
Omg what are the odds that there was another song sohee request!!! Absolutely stunning!!! the thing you said about it having a feeling of sorrow, that exact feeling is the essence of pansoori/gugak singing. Without pain, sorrow and longing you cannot perform it. Thats the beauty of it ♡ The way she performs is still a very "mild" version of those typical techniques but she does it incredible. Also, its important to note that korean has a certain vowel sound (written as "ㅡ")and its hard to describe what it sounds like, kind of like someone giving a punch on your chest and you go "oof" and its made with the jaw and teeth kinda halfway closed like what you picked up on in those long notes, which might be a factor in how the sound is produced. Im super excited about the other song by her that i requested omg so excited it was awesome to see a vocal expert be stunned by the technique wowwww Cant wait for the other one!!!
Thanks Sam for reacting to Sohee. For your information she won Immortal Songs episode 187 with her "Boatman's Song", where Sohyang premiered her "Arirang Alone" you reacted to. To her benefit she credited Sohyang's version "more than 100 times better" than her own. Her last arrangment/performance on Immortal Songs 368 of "Tearful Dooman River" is mindblowing, a new approach to singing. There you can totaly evaluate her skills, as she is sitting on the floor, singing a cappella most of the song. Engorge.
Great reaction! Love your technical expertise. Song Sohee really is a true virtuoso with her instrument(voice). We love her blend of traditional and more modern pop/ballad fusion style. She isn’t really showing her full voice here so please do check out tearful Tumen River performance. It is heart wrenching and shows her voice more fully. Hope you might also be interested enough to check out Pansori even in your own time. The vocal technique used will fascinate you, I promise 😊
@@peacelovevegankpop oh nice! She has some heavier things like "Kakotopia" her last title track but some slower like Moon Halo called "Waltz" & "Proust" :) Everything she sings, she writes herself, like her whole last album. :)
The corresponding words for the plosives you asked about at 5:35 is "Daldo CHagaweo". Removing all grammar, first word is moon, second word is cold. Grammar and context added back in, it's "Perhaps it may rain on the morrow, Since the moon does show its halo so. Even the moon feeling cold, it embraces the sky, And casts its halo". Her lyrical style is very rooted in almost medieval speech inflections, and draws upon grammar from ancient Korean that is genuinely lost to most. people.

!! I’m so pleasantly surprised to see a rxn to Song Sohee. She’s def not a mainstream reaction choice. I’d highly rec you try listening to her cover of Sumi Jo’s If I Leave on IS2: ua-cam.com/video/qze2MgK12AM/v-deo.html She also covered a variety of different regional Arirang songs on IS2 - you reacted to 1 version by SoHyang i think. 😊 She does a great job of slightly modernizing/making palatable to general audiences a very traditional Korean sound imo
Please do a vocal analysis of the artist playing the accompaniment piano: Ahn Ye Eun. She is the writer and composer of Moon Halo for Song So Hee. She is a prolific singer with unique vocals and technique in her own right and is known for her soundtracks for Kdramas most notably Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People (2017). Check out her recent release The Word from her EP "From the Island": ua-cam.com/video/y1N9MGSGWhI/v-deo.html
Thank you for checking her out! She's kind of a national treasure for Korea, singing in traditional style. Could you check "Tearful Trumen River" on Immortal Songs? There you can really hear the traditional, Gugak Style (here it's very light). It's so good! This will really blow your mind! Oh, and I love the song! It's written by the lady on the piano, Ahn Ye Eun (she's written in the title as well)! One of my favourite singer and songwriter. She's a songwriting genius. Maybe you can her out as well? She has kind of unique style and a very unique tone, a bit traditionally orientated as well. I can recognise her voice our of thousands. Please check her "Kakotopia" (more in rock direction) for example. Or "Waltz". Or "Proust". (More ballad)
Love her voice and her songs, maybe that is why your video is recommended. Not a Korean native and in the industry, but I think the language itself plays a role. Like the t sound with extra air is actually a sound in Korean.
Wow, so surprised and happy that you reacted to her! She is a beautiful artist. I would recommend this song that I would link below. Sorry! I don't know the name of it, the title is in Korean and this was from 2014, but it was the first time I heard her and it took my breath away. Thank you for your reactions! ua-cam.com/video/fgq-u89oEZY/v-deo.html
Every time I hear this style of singing, I think it must have been born from trying to imitate a baby's crying... I don't know, it's just what comes to my mind.
You're not far off. A lot of the Korean traditional styles of singing arose from satirizing the local government and politics, telling stories of lovers whose relationship abruptly ended, complaining about the melancholy of being a Korean at the time, among other things. So the sound of crying in the classical style is very much intentional.
You should learn about the concept of HAN and then you will understand Korean culture and the music. Han is very difficult to translate into English - but it is a sentiment that is pervasive in Korean culture.
She has been trained in a traditional singing technique, her wearing traditional hanbok style dress emphasizes that approach.
It's super interesting seeing you try to understand what she's doing vocally
She is such a "traditional" singer. She is incredible, so talented!!
And she doing a cover of BTS-SPRING DAY!! You can check this out 😣
