Imagine...a song about pollack. a fish. the was hses dressed, her hair in uneven braids, the "hobos" in background. All theatrics to give a visual about the poor happy to just eat fish. Definitely a folk song from the rural class.
Song So Hee is hard to explain to the western world. She's practiced for decades. She's the premier South Korean folk singer. She sang the Korean folk songs for UNESCO World Heritage. She isn't crying. It's the folk style. I question if westerners can actually sing like this. I heard in a different era people would scrap the throat to help them sing this folk style. Song So Hee has sung like this since 8 years old. She's been a national treasure of Korea since she was like 12. She can sing for well over a minute without any obvious breathing. It's nuts. She is in a league unknown to the rest of the world.
Song Sohee her performance of this song is 'Min-Yo'. She is a 'Min-Yo' singer. There are "Min-Yo' and 'Pansori' In Korean traditional Gugak music. 'Pansori' is like 'Opera', and 'Min-Yo' is classical national mosic, so they are different genres(fields).
It’s actually literally folk-songs. Chinese and japanese also have this singing method, min-yao in chinese and min-you in japanese. But it’s more apparent in korean folk songs and japanese folk songs. Only very old chinese folk songs would have this.
