'EKG' is a banger. I played it in my car and my friend just thought it was a 2018 dance-pop song that Zedd produced. I told him it was Natalie Portman and he couldn't believe it.
Brady has some unique performances like in Mysterious Skin and Funny Games so I'm interested in seeing film that he made and Natalie is my favorite actress
Wow Brady Corbet is SO intelligent. I really like how he see's the information age realistically for what it is, and that he see's the characters as simply victims of the era they were born in.
god vox lux was so good, and i think it's a good exercise in breaking conventions and doing things considered 'wrong' in filmmaking. kind of how the safdie brothers commit to doing things 'wrong' for the sake of subversion, and the beauty comes in the challenging interpretation. total fever dream feel
SPOILER ALERT: I think that this movie could have been developed more- including some of the characters and past events that were shown. For example, when the narrator explains Celeste’s car accident I actually wanted to see the flashback. I also wanted to see the events leading up to her pregnancy & how it shaped her career and her current choices. I also didn’t know that she was using ketamine in addition to cocaine and alcohol. This is a really great movie overall, but I think that some of the events and character backstory could have been developed and executed a lot better. 22 days is an extremely short amount of time to shoot a film tho.
totally agree. there are a lot of missing pieces that could have been included instead of the ridicously long concert scene. the music is awful... i wish i didn't bother watching that scene. i was expecting a resolution that did not come
@Almighty Kevin I'm not saying it was totally unnecessary, I'm saying it was overly long. A differing opinion is just different not terrible but thanks for the feedback.
Cinema isn't about filling you up with details. What you crave is more like filmed literature. That would go against the film's nature anyway, considering it's a diptych.
I think Brad portrays pop culture and terrorism in the movie as something that has massive influence on the world, also compares and differentiates them from one another. He also presents these two things as something faceless, loud, unexpected, painful to watch and hear (in terms of Celeste music and masks and acts of the attackers). What are your thoughts?
Do you think his intention was that Celeste's songs should in the end feel like trashy generic pop or he acutually thinks they are good songs? It's not entirely clear to me from interview.
@@richardgamrat1944 The former. The songs are cleverly written by Sia to be good and bad at the same time. For me, the film is about a world in which everything from pop videos to personal tragedies to terrorist atrocities are just consumer spectacles.
@AciidRaiin I would include "average rock track" and "torch song" in pop category. And I am not saying pop is inherently bad. When I am talking about pop here I mean mainstream music, not particular genre of music. So I guess we are kinda talking about two different things here. But yeah I consider songs used in this movie to be generic, trashy... Pretty much the definition of it. And I don't think that "pure vocals" or "composition with organic Instruments" makes music good or whatever.. I don't see why you would assume that about me, seems like a bit of a stretch.
Heard Private Girl this morning for the first time and I was instantly obsessed with all the songs Natalie sang on, even though its highly auto tuned. Which is because she is not a great singer but it sounds awesome with lyrics by SIA. This movie will be interesting.
I wonder if it's the stress of going from actor to director, haha. THAT's why most actors will never venture into directing! I hope he keeps directing though.
it looks really not well done ... i m sure there was a lot of love put into this movie ... but imo too many wrong choices were made ... cuz the look of it is just poor ... in taste
jayjay 154 correct, so many bad choices. The director needed to have a clear concept on what the tone of the film was supposed to be and what the theme was. It was so messy and said nothing. Had potential but definitely was a flop.
This movie didn’t know what it wanted to be. I went in not knowing much about it and wanted to be wowed by Natalie Portman but it was a mess. Too many themes. No direction. Had some decent acting but... not great. After watching this interview, It made less sense. They mention her researching drugs like ketamine and that her character was an addict... If her character was on drugs why did they not focus on that? No mention of ketamine in the movie. All they mentioned was her being on meds bc of her spinal injury, and one quick scene where she does some cocaine but honestly what celebrity isn’t on coke lol.
And if it was supposed to be a narrative on mass shootings then MAKE IT A NARRATIVE ON MASS SHOOTINGS! Other than her being a survivor of one and the other shooters wearing the same mask as her in a music video, there was no other narrative of mass shootings. If it was about fame, music business, and the media then focus on that. There were no consequences for the character’s and their actions. Was this movie about media and their constant need for new trending stories? What was this movie supposed to be??!! What was the theme? I feel like Natalie just wanted to live her pop star fantasy let’s be honest lol.
It was also very cringeworthy at times. The film starts with a triggering scene that sets the tone for a serious movie on gun violence and being a survivor of a mass shooting, then all the sudden it’s about skyrocketing to fame and no mention on how she got there? Then you have her speaking in this hilarious accent throughout the second part of the movie, provoking innocent bystanders, saying crazy controversial shit, etc. which changes the whole tone of the movie. Then some other random shooting hardly even linked to her and then some press conference about the shooting is the climax to the movie? But then she does some coke and has an amazing stage performance in a sparkly body suit doing full blown choreography and vogueing with the backup dancers???? What was this??? LMAO. I literally was laughing at the end of this movie and the 3 other gay guys there in the theater were too.
No its pretty easy to understand its that the movie posits unfinished questions and does nothing to comment on it and instead give a lackluster mumbled story which yes, is entirely on the director who's job it is to direct a movie and an audience.@@Smurfkobain10
Also don't understand your comment on my intelligence when you know nothing about it, but good on you for using a form of social media to express a rash emotion you probably would't dare to show to my face. Good use of social media. This movie must've really helped you find your purpose and how to express your emotionalism through online platforms@@Smurfkobain10
Agree. It did not know what it wanted to say. Too many themes and none were executed well. I literally was laughing in the theater at Natalie Portman living her Gaga Super Bowl Halftime show fantasy at the end. I went into this movie wanting to be moved and captivated. The only part I enjoyed was the dialogue between her and her daughter at the cafe because it was the only time I got to connect with ANY character in this movie

This movie was so underrated, and, her performance...wow.
Because she wasn't in the first 40-50 mins!
Who else is here after hearing/reading about The Brutalist? Go Brady Corbet.
yes, although I was aware of this in the interim
I'm so glad they've given them a comfy couch to sit on, rather than those awful high stools. Ricky Camilleri is reliably great as always.
you can thank bill burr for that haha

Feeeel me check the ekg my hearts like a house beat!!!
Sia wrote all the songs for this film :)
I barely discovered it now in 2021! So damn good
I just died when I heard that Brady Corbet directed this movie! He was my crush when he was on Thunderbirds!
I like this interviewer so much.
Natalie Portman and Toni Collette got ripped off in the nominations of 2018 shame, shame, shame
This movie was INCREDIBLE! My jaw dropped at the end. 😬.
Brady has some unique performances like in Mysterious Skin and Funny Games so I'm interested in seeing film that he made and Natalie is my favorite actress
Corbet has grown into the Orson Welles physique and head shape it looks like, cool

Sierra Stevens agreed! Loved the movie, but was taken aback about some of the plot gaps

The Fame Monster
Juan Carlos F Velázquez exactly... Natalie just wanted to live her Gaga fame monster fantasy lol
Juan Carlos F Velázquez the entire ending of this film was just Natalie Portman living her Gaga Grimes fantasy. This movie was a mess!!

had a huge crush on Brady when he played the brother in thirteen
Natalie Portman is the most talented film actor of her generation. She is an extraordinary actor.
Brady Corbet was so beautiful...
Woah, just googled him. I WAS super into him lol
He hasn’t really aged. He just somehow became really fat.
Which videos did she watch I didn't get it
Wow, 2nd time this has happened on a NP interview, but 💯th comment. Just wanna say I love her, and I wish I could just be her commode.
I'd consider this a thriller/drama
Heard Private Girl this morning for the first time and I was instantly obsessed with all the songs Natalie sang on, even though its highly auto tuned. Which is because she is not a great singer but it sounds awesome with lyrics by SIA. This movie will be interesting.
you think Sia can write songs that arent insipid tedium and cliche mixed and distilled
I love it when pretentious actors do a role or just anything that isn't so pretentious, It's refreshing!
The late great Scott Walker composed the music along with Sia.
Good movie, but damn, THAT INTERVIEWER IS SO RUDE. He keeps interrupting Natalie and Brady! 😒😡 Like Dude, Shutup and let them FINISH!!
17:24 😂🤣
Why couldn’t prince harry have just fallen in love with Natalie Portman. She’s gorgeous, talented and a great role model. She’s a real a list star ⭐️
Love the fact that this is a movie partially about a singer.. and there are literally 30 minutes of bad singing
If this is irony: you didn’t understand the movie. It’s on purpose that she is not that talented.
Celeste means heaven or related to the heavens?
right
Dude, c’mon it’s pronounced “Cor-BAY” not “Cor-bet”. Do your research.
The way she talks about ketamine is hilarious
I'm glad someone thinks so
The director seems like he has really bad allergies or anxiety or...……….something else. Every Q&A for this movie, he's looks and acts the same way.
Natalie was snubbed from Best Supporting Actress
Brady hasnt aged well has he? Alan tracy has let himself go it looks like
timothee chalamet
Natalie portman taika Waititi
that you're reading this is a problem
Is this based on Lady Gaga?
Gaga wishes.
No. Gaga is real person @@lukeguldan4906
Luke Guldan Gaga achieved everything you can as a Popstar, don’t be jealous.
Why/How did Brady Corbet get so fat?! Great talent nonetheless.
I wonder if it's the stress of going from actor to director, haha. THAT's why most actors will never venture into directing! I hope he keeps directing though.
Probably just focused on his art rather than his body, and all the stress that comes with it can cause your diet to go to shit I’d guess.
He's still hot nonetheless

Straight to video.
You literally have no taste.
Did Brady Corbett quit acting because he became fat and ugly, or did he become fat and ugly because he quit acting?
It's a real chicken/egg situation.
Yeah too bad he made a terrible mess of a movie that says literally nothing. Literally nothing.
Shame you didn't understand it and are completely blaming it on the filmmakers instead of your own stupidity.

The movie is shockingly bad.
the music is painfully bad. cant believe it is sia's!!
Karen Lawler All the songs Sia doesn’t care about, she gives away to other artists. That’s probably why
What happened to him???!!! Too much food!
this sounds insensitive?
