  • Transform food waste into a valuable food supply for chickens, hogs, songbirds and fish with Black Soldier Fly Production. Karl Warkomski, Director of Conservation with ProtaCulture, LLC introduces us to this astounding insect that can break down food waste faster than microbes. Black Soldier Fly maggots make a high fat, high protein source of nourishment while making what is normally waste into a valuable farm/garden asset. Part 2 focuses on the life cycle of black soldier fly.

I accidently started a black fly bin. I only had banana peels, apple cores, bread loaf butts and unwashed eggshells on top of weeds and tall grass I pulled from my garden.

So i've recently heard that ground up green pea flour (sold as dry split peas by the pound at grocery stores) kills brown legged grain mites and mold mites at around 1%-10% mixed in with what the mites want to eat, but are harmless to larvae and crickets.

Has anyone ever seen the larvae eat the eggs? I had a female lay a nice big cluster on the side of an avocado pit. Later that day I went out and the pit had been moved due to the larvae underneath and that cluster was gone. I tried to lightly dig around where the pit was sitting and couldn't find any of the eggs.

Thank you for a great video,,,,,I always wondered which were the kibble pieces, and which were the bits.....A stroke of bad luck (a mouse got into a 50 pound of pizza flour). I put the flour out by the compost pile, (the bag was on its side, with the top and sides ripped open,,,exposed to the rain) it was packed with BFL within a month. Flour might work for those of us who can't tell a kibble from a bit LOL Thanks again, have a great day.

To folks who have questions about this video and the topic: I'd like to share my thoughts. Karl Warkomski; Conseration with ProtaCulture LLC, and Living Web Farms (and others) typically do not answer posted questions. With no criticism of them or anyone else who uploads videos: I've learned that UA-cam is often not an effective means of getting answers. Sponsors and the video uploader folks simply don't have the intent or the time to answer questions and monitor the video. Comments are good (matter of fact, this part of UA-cam is titled "Comments" (not "questions") and you'll notice that many year-old and older questions here remain unanswered. Some people who upload videos DISABLE Comments...one reason being that they don't want viewers to have false expecations that their questions will go unanswered, except occasionally perhaps by other viewers. Also, a lot of us browsing youtube aren't keen on spending much time answering questions, or at best we are unreliable. It depends on the site and the type of people viewing. I think a better way to get some of these questions answered is to browse the Internet and use search engines, such as google, others, etc. The is an EXCELLENT informative video!

An eaten watermelon half turned upside down in your garden will very soon be inhabited with BSF larvae underneath it. The watermelon biodegrades in your garden and feeds your worms after the BSF are finished with it.

Dude I got my compost bin full of them in Georgia. Never knew about them until I said, "What the hell is that in my bin!?!" They've been doing great for months, and the older ones have been leaving through a loose part I left in the wood for them and getting ready to become adults!

1:22 "When you see the candidate that lost..." Are you saying the moment the person is elected you can drive around and take all the signs of the person who lost from any non-residential, non-business roadside, such as 4-way intersections and you can't get in any trouble at all? I don't want to steal, if it's stealing.

i think they are still the property of that candidate, but many times there are plenty left up for weeks i would say at that point they are left on public property they will be taken and trashed by the highway dept...then get them...or call the highway dept ask to go look, they probably have a huge storage of ones they picked up.

I'm sure he was somewhat joking. In my area they only have so many days to remove them until they are fined for it so they tend to pick them all up pretty quick. I know in other areas you can find them for weeks after the election and it's obvious they just abandoned them. You could always contact the various campaigns and ask for them.

CornMeal and Corn Flour seems good. I'm trying White Corn Flour mixed with used coffee grounds. I recently added old stale Wheat bran cereal + Corn flakes + Cheerios (oat) to the mix and a little calcium carbonate powder. I'm doing this on a micro-scale. I heard that animal products are not as good, so I abandoned the cat food idea.

I had to kill a bee hive in my chimney recently and pretty soon, my living room was overrun with maggots. We found them dropping out of the flu. Now we have the big larvae dropping out as well, and crawling all over the house. We had to put containers of soapy water in the fireplace to catch and drown them. Then I googled them and learned what they are. If you want some, come to my house.

I'm experimenting with different materials for black soldier flies to lay eggs on. Currently, I've used biodegradable egg cartons (paper kind), I'm also using rice as my attractant and it dries out. I think they are laying eggs between the dried rice grains. I'm in Utah, and it's very dry here. I only get eggs layed outside in my fly tent if it's rained for a couple days. They don't survive here in the wild. Hornets land on them and eat them too. So, I'm using a VivoSun Plant Grow Tent (paid $65 for one on Amazon) inside my house now with a 6-band Aquarium light (Aboiut $30-35) inside. I also use a habitat control center and a reptile fogger/mister to keep the humidity to 80% and I'm keeping the temperature at 80 F. I let the fogger drip on the rice to keep some wetness. I'm seeing a lot of baby larvae crawling all over the wet egg carton which is under the rice. The egg carton absorbs the dripping water from the fogger tube and keeps the bottom of the rice wet. The top of the rice dries out a bit. I suspect they are laying eggs in the crevices between rice grains; it's hard to tell. I'm trying feeding them with both Floating Trout Food (about $1 per lb) and whole grain wheat and whole grain barley (about $0.35 per lb). I also give them old bread and other food waste... never doing a hotdog or polish dog again... stunk my house up for 3 days! no meat for my indoor flies!

Well this was super informative. I have a question, so, I have bsf larvae as reptile food, aka nutri grubs. I kept them in a 6qt container with the "substrate" they came with, some aspen shavings, and I've been feeding them table scraps (now I know probably not to their liking as I used healthy veggies since they are intended to pass what they eat onto my reptile so I have to watch that a little), anyhow, today I checked all my feeders through again and when I was going through my bsf larvae I saw almost microscopic movement. Very very SUPER tiny bug like looking things. I can't identify them. I've tried googling possible parasites that might come with feeder worms because that was my initial thought (and fear!). I used my cell phone to zoom in with the camera and magnify them to actually see their shape and color. They look white, almost clear and seem to be rather round just scurrying around.
Do you have any idea what this could be? I am extremely doubtful that there is a chance I introduced a parasite or otherwise undesirable inhabitant to that container. The only unwanted guests I have are fungus gnats because of my isopod/springtail culture, but the bsf container was not opened frequently and I have never seen a single gnat close to it, they are much too busy infesting my isopod/springtail culture and landing in my coffee.
I would very much appreciate some input on this because seeing the life cycle of a bsf picture has me wondering if they are tiny larvae "hatchlings" I guess for lack of a better description. It could be possible that where I got them from they had some actual adults that were able to lay eggs in the substrate, which they didn't see and then got shipped along in the bedding with the grubs. But until I'm 100% sure and have identified these little things, I won't be feeding any more of these to my gecko.
Any help very much appreciated! Sorry for the long winded comment, just wanted to give as much information as possible to maybe get to the bottom of this
