  • Transform food waste into a valuable food supply for chickens, hogs, songbirds and fish with Black Soldier Fly Production. Karl Warkomski, Director of Conservation with ProtaCulture, LLC introduces us to this astounding insect that can break down food waste faster than microbes. Black Soldier Fly maggots make a high fat, high protein source of nourishment while making what is normally waste into a valuable farm/garden asset. Part 3 focuses on the biology of black soldier fly.

    The BSFL eat the housefly eggs because the housefly eggs are deposited directly in the food of the BSFL. The only housefly eggs that hatch are the ones that hatch very early before the BSFL are hatched and grown. If you are doing a pod, it is always best to seed it with BSFL to prevent that early housefly larva hatching.

    I'm so glad to have stumbled on this info a few days ago. Focus on the microbes, and we can really evolve all of this! Amazing!!!!

    well I have noticed the flies do have mouth parts 5:50 and they use it especially to take in water. But I also noticed BSF sitting on jucy oranges sipping some liquid. I am actually working on an exeriment where I let BSF "drink" different liquids and look how they develop. any thoughts on that? did you notice something similar?

    Bad odors can be managed with EM-4 very nicely. And I have also noticed that EM-4 actually attracts more BSF adults

    Hermetia illucens do have spongy mouthparts, albeit very small and normally only used to take in some moisture or nectar which can extend their final stage as an adult fly. Research showed feeding adults, extended their egg laying period an average of 10 days and tripled egg production. The milk diet was best.

    Oh, I'm so relieved ! ..I just started seeing these soldier flies this year. Lived here (okc) all of my life & never saw them like this. They hang around where house flys are sometime like 1 soldier to 100 house flies ratio. I thought they were wasps & cringed at the thought of a bite or sting. Also i did see some grubs dark grey striped fat & slow. They were where some dog food had gotten wet no stink. Yea !! Great ! Thank u so much for this video. Kinda like earwigs look, so medieval & treacherous, but they clean up environment, too. Earwigs don't attack unless u threaten them. It is said that their pinch is weak if u provoke.
    Some neighbors moved across street. They had a beautiful tiny black rooster. He got out gate kids left open. There were about 3-4 hens, the biggest I've ever seen, fattest, healthy & huge. I figured they must be composting & raising black fly grubs & that "that" is when black soldier flys came. Not allowed to have chickens in this area. I didn't tell on them. Maybe someone else did, though.

    FYI ... Alberta has serious summers. They generally start in June and end in September. Temperatures in the 80-90's are very common every year. There are actually 2 native species of cactus found! What's the deal with America's gross ignorance 'aboot' Canada? The world continues past the 49th parallel ... you know that, right?

    You briefly mentioned how to prevent other species from inhabiting the pod. I would like more information on this aspect of setting up a pod for the first time. Also, have you heard of a bsff being successful with wintering over in the Midwest? Northwest Missouri to be exact.

    I just constructed my own pen and started hatching my own flies using my bin and the crawl offs to populate the breeder. Haven't noticed any actual breeding activity yet but I have everything set up I think right I'm supplementing my Colony with Calvin or and they are going insanely well along with all my own organic waste. You had mentioned that you were hoping to develop a all together in one system if anyone knows where this is on the market could they please point me in the right direction cuz I would love to have all together one system to run in the colder months to keep my colonies going indoors

    If I live in Colorado and want to overwinter some BSF, can I keep a bin in my kitchen? I keep my house temperature above 65*F all year. Usually in winter, I have it set for 70* inside. Where can I buy one of the small rectangular pods?

    • @lyricderbin1169
      @lyricderbin1169 6 років тому +1

      May Davies this wouldn't be a good idea because they will just turn into adult flies in the matter of weeks if not days. And to get more larve, you need adult flies. So unless you want your house loaded with flies, it's not a good idea

      It’s just a habit some people have, especially in America because of the “valley girl” fad many years ago. People who do it don’t mean it blasphemously, so it’s best to be kind when trying to correct them. I used to do it myself before the Holy Spirit brought it to my attention and I worked hard to break that habit.
