How often are P&P Officers followed from their office back to their residence? This would be my biggest concern with a violent offender who wanted to attack their monitor.
This gentleman is 100% spot on. Be aware and alert at all times. You can still be respectful and do your job and protect yourself at the same time. I think people do not realize sometimes the high rate of mentally ill people in society. A person could have a paranoid delusion and even though you’ve had a good working relationship with them in the past, things can take a dangerous turn. It just takes seconds. I’m speaking from experience with working in corrections and with severely mentally ill people. Always have safety at the forefront of your mind.
We have had probation officers taken hostage, attacked and even killed in the line of duty. When dealing with convicted felons you never know what your going to get.
We always teach our probation officers to wait for back up when possible. Just like street officers are taught and corrections officers. Never rush into a situation unless someone's life is in jeopardy.
My son Dad who is a St. Paul police officer and I told I'm might go to college for probation officer. He said NO YOUR NOT 🚫👎 I will worry about you Lynn Deatherage said Officer A. Brown after I was shot in the behind in 2005
It is a dangerous job just like law enforcement on the street or being a correctional officer. They all have dangers that can pop up at any given moment.
Thank you for posting this. In NJ they took the badges and official identification from Probation Officers just to show how disgustingly Probation Officers and Supervisors are treated by NJ Court administrators here.
Could you talk about probation officers and special events? How do you go about figuring out whether to allow a probationer to attend or to deny? I live in Eastern MA and have friends who wear Blue. For the last week of October, when Salem really gets hopping--Halloween. Lots of alcohol, partying, people and whatever else goes along with this. I know that many probation officers, especially from Boston, tell their probationers not to go to Salem for Halloween celebrations. I have heard that they hang around the Salem commuter rail station, looking for their probationers. I know of others who really step-up home / work visits during October, as a way to discourage them from taking a trip to Salem. I also know that there's a lot of police detail work to be had in Salem mid-late October. I'd like to hear about how other probation officers deal with probationers and known wild party events.
Did this for five years, we never went alone. We checked in with dispatch and maintained in radio contact. I had some different rules than in Florida! Though did terrible things, some of the violation reports played out as comedic farce.
Do probation and parole officers wear body cam? Probation and parole officers need to boycott until they work in a group of at least two. Employees have to fight for their rights and safety.
Here in Florida, the probation officers do not have body-cams but It would be awesome to have them for safety purposes. If the offender is aware they are on camera it could prevent an attack on the probation officer or save the officer from false allegations.
I have seen some probationary sentences with special conditions ordered by a judge. Example mail in questionnaire form once a month and submit once a month to a drug screen. Depending on what the court orders there can be many variations of serving probation. Thanks for sharing, this could be a separate video on the variations of probation sentences
Yes sir. Most probation officers I worked with wanted the offender to be successful. We had a few that, how do I say it politely? Well they were Cowboyd.
The dog issue does not come up often but when it occurs you tell your probationer to put the dog up. Call two minutes ahead from a location you can see the home and yard. Tell the probationer you are right around the corner and to secure the dog. Watching the property from a distance can be useful as well. In case the probationer sends people away or illegal activity is going on. Certain people they are not allowed contact with, etc. This way while he or she is securing the dog you get a little surveillance time.
I am currently in the military and I am about to ETS in a year. I am wanting to get into probation/parole. I have my bachelor already. I am conflicted on working for a police department or probation. Do you have an advice? Thank you
Well, Both sides have had officers injured or killed. Probation is dangerous but not as dangerous as being in a patrol car. I have done both as well as a Correctional Officer in the prison and jail. Money could be a factor depending what state you are going to be in. Here in Florida probation and Parole pays less than city or county police. Some pay quite a bit more than probation. Check your states pay scale because, in some states, this is the reverse. Probation is plan clothes, usually a polo shirt with insignia, patrol is uniform. Both carry a weapon. Both in most states have arrest power. Both testify in court. Both have paperwork. In Probation you do your own arrest warrants and ask Judge to sign, affidavits, violation of Probation reports, file on offender, cost of supervision log, court costs and fine logs, restitution payment logs etc. All on laptop now a days.
@@trueprisonstoriesbygaryyor3684 Sir I appreciate you taking the time to give such a detailed response. Which of the three fields did you enjoy the most? Also do you have an email I could contact to ask additional questions?
Each one had good and bad time's but that's the nature of the game. On the road in a cold snowstorm, investigating a traffic accident was no fun for me. In jail getting spit at, or a poop bomb was never fun. As a probation officer the case load is high, and lots of paperwork.
This is off topic. I wanted to know if you or Capt. Canady ever dealt with Cuban innmates from the 1980 Cuban boat flee? This is more of a C.O. stories topic. Though we can always learn from history. Gang's from Cuba do exist, yet intelligence has little to work with. Islamic and Haitian is difficult with language barrier. Maybe the topics could be rolled into one video. Thank you Gary.
I will ask Captain Canady. We dealt with them in the Army. Fort Riley Kansas. I will get with the Captain. When they started coming into our country the Military had to deal with most of them.

Thank you for sharing this and thank you for your service. Very well said.
Thank you as well, sir. Your videos are very valuable and informative.
Appreciate you!
Thank you!
I knew a lot of probation Officers and just listening to them I knew they had a hard job. Great video Great information.
Thank you Captain
This is a first to hear from a probation officer, thank you Sir.
Thank you for your support
Anything for you, best channel ever 👍

That is an absolute disgrace!
These big cities are making me sick. Caving in to the media perception of law Enforcement
The courts in NJ are the most power corrupt as any court system can get. Even California would not treat their Probation Officers the way NJ does.
I thought about going back because it wasn’t a bad job overall but I make more as a security guard.
Yes the pay is always always an issue. Most states do not pay enough for a job with dangers and much paperwork.

Yes definitely can do a video on special events. Great question!

Thank you for your service! Yes it is amazing how different it can be from state to state.
Great job Gary. Things have changed a little. Its now mandatory you qualify with firearms in the academy or your out.
Thank you very much! I think it is good they added firearms qualification in the probation academy
I dated a guy at 19, and he was on probation for the video Sir. I didn't know that they could come to your house.
Probation officers are required to make home visits.

Probation for burglary sir excuse me at 19 years old. He only had to go to the probation office to give a pee test and to fill out forms.
