Just found your channel and after the first video I subscribed. I loved the fact that you gave actual helpful information and explained the how to basics. I had never thought of using locktite on a barrel because all of my ARs hit at 100 yrds. This is my first 500 yard gun. I just ordered a muzzle brake as well based on your advice. Thank you brother

That is great grouping!! I bedded mine with Blue LocTite also and I'm quite pleased with the performance. Also, I put in a Larue 2 stage trigger with the straight bow trigger. A great upgrade and not near the price of other top brands. Easy to install too. Thanks for sharing.

My Ballistic Advantage 18" loves the Hornady AG. Most accurate factory loads Iv shot. I picked up some Black, but had so much fun with the AG, I forgot I even had the Black. After blowing the target out, I put the last 10 rounds through the barcode printed on the corner of the target at 200 yds. Follow up trip was 1.3" at 200

I just finished a 16" upper build. I can't see well much past 200 yards, so getting the most distance isn't so important to me. That's very cool that you can just go out there in the forest and shoot. I guess there's no special permit? Here in Texas, you can hunt but you can't target shoot on public land. Figure that one out. I'm sure it would look like a garbage heap if we could because no one has respect for anything if it's "free". I would love to be able to go shoot somewhere and be the only person out there. So much more enjoyable that way. Great job on the video, good camera work and editing. Hope to see more in the future. Good luck!

@@sortoftactical I hunted with my 13" pistol 6.5 grendel last year for dear and it worked like it should. Used 100g Nosler custom comp bullets with ar comp powder. I'm not sure what caliber I'll use this fall.. but it'll definitely be my loads.

I have to add a comment here. 1.5 to 2 moa isn’t the norm for American gunner ammo. I got a savage model 12 varmint in 6.5 creedmoor that shoots 10 round groups with it into a 5/8 ragged hole. I’ve shot two ten shot groups to ensure it wasn’t a fluke. It was 140 grain bthp. A lot of times barrels just simply like different grains of bullets based on different twist rates. 1 in 9 twist is optimal for 125 grain and under in 6.5 grendel. 1 in 8 is designed for the heavier bullets. I’ve shot American gunner 556 55 grain in my 8 inch twist 556 barrel and shoots fine, just under an inch with 7 shots. But in a 7 twist it flings the bullets everywhere . Often getting 3 moa at best. Just some food for thought. Good scenery. I’ve heard a lot of good things about pikes peak. Would like to travel there one day

Very good video. I love my 6.5. I have the 20" barrel, along with an 18. at 500 the rifle shoots very well. As you know all really depends on the trigger puller LOL!
I built two 6.5 Grendel AR's. They are ZEV upper and lower receivers one is a 12.5" and the other is an 18" Noveske barrels. I sent my 12.5" to Teludyne Technologies and had their straight jacket system put on it. At 100 yds I can put 30 rounds in a half inch group and the barrel never heats up. I sent my .300WM to them to have the same thing done. Can't wait for it to get back. I'll be in Gunnison, Colorado in October for my son's wedding love to visit but can't stand the politics their. Like the free State of Arkansas. Good video 👍

@@sortoftactical for my 12.5" 6.5 Gren it was almost $800 but my .300WM is going to be almost $1100 because there is more work than that has to be done. If you are wanting to do a true bolt action 6.5 Grendel AR upper receiver look up Uintah Precision they make a upper receiver bolt action that fits on your AR-15 lower receiver.

I used green loctite on my barrel. Worked wonders.
I'd be curious to see how it shoots with _just_ the bedding done, vs with both the brake and bedding. Both the bedding and adding any kind of weight to the end of the barrel changes the barrel harmonics and your accuracy nodes (that's what you're chasing with handloads by adjusting powder ETC). What you showed here is akin to changing both your charge weight _and_ seating depth at once to see the accuracy outcome... Savvy?

I initially used 2400 but it was a bit off. Bumped up to 2450 and for 200 rounds it was spot on. Now as my barrel is a bit more broken in I am getting right at 2490. Strange but I like the speed quite a bit! Thanks for watching, I appreciate it.
I just read your question again and realized I didnt answer it. I found the BC of 0.45 online and I havent really had any issues using that...so far.

Lapping the Receiver is critical. I have a PSA Upper that showed .003” out of square on the face relative to the bore.... after lapping barely any hard anodize was left... rather than locktite I’d use black shaft seating compound - high temp on the journal and cooper based anti-seize on the threads to get good thread stretch.

I always hear about being able to shoot in the forest parks like this, if you dont mind me asking where is this, or how did you find/get a place to shoot in CO in the parks?
Its a national forest. I look for areas with little road access and hills for backdrop. You should call your closest ranger station. They will guide you.
I live in northern Colorado and love my 6.5 Grendel took a nice buck 2 years ago with it!

I just saw your video and realized that it’s a year old. A quick question…what do you think is long term prognosis for 6.5 Grendel? Do you think that we can expect it to be around or do you think it will fade away? Love know your thought s.
It has been around for quiet some time and has really gathered a lot of followers. I really do not think it will fade away anytime soon. In fact, I think we may see an increase in offerings over the next few years. A slow increase. Thanks for watching.
Agreed. The gunner ammo shoots sub half MOA all day long in my 6.5 CM

I'm looking at the Wilson Combat 6.5 Creedmoor 20" or 22"for range shooting. They also offer the Grendel. Thoughts?
If it says Wilson it will be good. I've not owner one but jave shot many. Excellent quality.
Can you do some more groups (5 shots) with that. I’m curious to see how it does when it gets warmed up. I had a PSA 20” 6.5 Grendel and wasn’t ok with the group sizes. I friend bought it and if we can just bed the barrel and get him these great results then we will. I wanted to built mine from the ground up anyways. I went with an 18” JP barrel in a blem BCM upper which fit nice and tight. Thanks for the video.

If your barrel fits tight into the upper receiver with some force or tapping it in with a rubber mallet, then you don't need lock tight. If you can slide your barrel into the upper by hand with little to no force then use lock tight.
that looks like the same spot of pikes peak that i ran into some dudes looking for elk and as they left down the road three elk stepped out following them lmao.

I’m a big fan of PSA and the 6.5 Grendel. I have their 12” pistol in 6.5 as my go anywhere do anything gun. So far I’ve only shot Hornady Black with a 3X prism scope and I average under 2” at a hundred yards. I’ve decided to purchase a longer length upper and a more powerful optic for some longer range shooting. I’m also debating on installing a muzzle break and am curious which one you chose. Nice group you shot there. I enjoyed the video and look forward to more.
Thanks for watching and for commenting! Im indifferent when it comes to muzzle brakes. They are such a personal choice. The one I am using is an MSTN/PRI for a 308. I am looking forward to building a 12.5 grendel as well. If youre looking for a more powerful optic to try and reduce groups look at the vsrious low paower variables like a 1-8 from Vortex, Primary Arms, or Swampfox. They will be game changing for your rifle.
I bought a 20 inch Oden Works barrel and they guarantee theirs for 1MOA or better with match grade ammunition. I haven't heard of the thread locker for barrels but I'm sure it helps. I know I had to put a block on the muzzle and hammer it in because it was such a tight fit. I put Molly grease on mine before installing and I still had to beat it on the whole way it was so tight. I used a VLTOR MUR upper receiver and I think it's precision machined enough from the factory so it shouldn't need lapped, for what they charge it had better be precision machined. I'm waiting on a scope before trying it out even though I have buis, but I'm not even wasting ammo zeroing them in. I wish I had a place like that to shoot.
It sounds like a perfect fit. I hope my next barrel is tight like that.
@@sortoftactical I got an Oden Works 20 in hbar and bolt carrier group and tunable gas block I think from primary arms for around 400 bucks. It's worth checking out.

Man my 16” Anderson and 18” faxon both shoot the fusion really good especially for a hunting bullet. Both guns shoot it sub 1.5moa which is definitely good enough for deer

@@sortoftactical I've worked up some loads using the speer gold dot rifle 120, which seems to be a fusion with a different label. speer gives load data, but the velocities they list are imaginary out of my 20" bear creek 5r franken-grendel. Haven't tried H335 yet, have heard good things...
Johnny's Reloading Bench has a grendel playlist, my results so far have basically mirrored his.
@@10-4JackWagon thats what I do to. He has amazing videos. Too many people are getting mediocre results with the Speer stuff. Thats a shame. I use their BTSP for my 308 and it rocks.

I used the EPSILON VG6 on my 20" Grendel and I'm getting 1.25" max group with cheap steel case wolf, 100gr ammo @100yrd.
My odin works 20 inch dmr barrel is one picky SOB. when I find a good load it likes it'll shoot a .5 inch clover leaf but that range is super narrow.
I jave noticed that pemium barrels are picky, but find the right load and it is amazing.

It has been a long process. I would watch some more videos from dedicated reloading channels to get the best idea.
Good vid. Question for you. What are your thoughts on a 36 yard zero for the grendel? 400 yards will probably be my max distance.
Thanks! If it is a scoped rifle I always do a 100 yard zero. A 25/36/50 yard zero is normally best left to combat style setups and red dots. Thats not to say it cant be done but the benefit is up to the shooter. I would do a 200 to 250 zero in a ballistic app and see what the drops would look like.

Got a Bear Creek Arsenal 6.5. Grendel 18" barrel on a Anderson lower only put about 40 rnds through it stuck on indoor range 25 yards, have about 750 rnds of 100 gr wolf ammo but can't use it at indoor range. Looking for a good place to shoot it. Live in Boulder, Co. Got a few places to shoot in Roosevelt national forest up by Nederland, but fire bans have been a problem. $500 fine for campfires, $5000 fine for shooting.
You kind of get stuck this time of the year with fire bans. Be patient, theybusually lift early October.

My Grendels LOVE the Hornady 123gr AG. My 12" Palmetto will shoot sub MOA all day with that stuff. Like better than ELD or SST.

You are fortunate. I think my barrel may have more to do with it than the actual ammo. I shot some AG from a Creedmoor and shot several 0.3 inch groups.

I have 3 Grendels. All of them like the AG offering more than the SST.
ELD / Black is consistently tops.
Still don't have one that'll shoot the Russian stuff into less than "minute of man"

My daughter hit an antelope at 610 yards with my 6.5 Grendel 16 inch barrel. So you can reach out further with a Grendel. Nice group though.

What color and type of loctite did you use? Still having good luck with it?
I used red. I did read recently that the red stuff liquifies under enough heat. I am currently searching for evidence that it may not be working. So far my results have stayed the same and the rifle still performs better. As soon as I get that sorted out I will put a new video up.

Penny sized groups are what I see with Fed Fusion 120gr. without any work to the upper.
I think this barrel is a 0.8 inch at best. I am ordering a new one soon. Possibly carbon.
Cool place. I only have a public range out to 200 yds and it gets trashed.

This spot is 40 min down dirt roads. It jelps weed out the uncommitted.

Is it going to be for Mule deer mostly or what else do you plan on using it on?
I will be using it on antelope, deer and possibly elk depending on the area I end up in. Some of the units I hunt you would be lucky to get a 100 yard shot. I would still be ok with velocity out to about 400 with my 129 Accubond Long Range Load though.

I drive by the main store of PSA every day. It’s cool to hack on them for QC problems but there are more of their ARs that are fine that people want to ignore.......for some reason 🤔.
People that have something they dont like always insist on spreading their useless info to us like COVID...
Sort of Tactical if people could just leave other people alone! Thinking FOR others is one of the causes of all the problems we deal with. No one has zero problems they need to work on, but they rather look at you. Then then pie hole opens and stupid comes out.

Been using 6.5 Grendel for about 8 yrs. I get less than a MOA with several bullets
With the barrel you use that should be easy. I had every intention of replacing this one but it shoots under MOA now and it is abfast barrel too.

Just built mine, haven't shot it yet. Also, trying an illuminated reticle scope for the first time.
If I were going to use Loctite on a firearm, I'd use the weaker stuff (purple).
I will be doing a video on my technique very soon. Hopefully will also het the deer shot recorded to. As for the loctite...it isnt on the threads so I've had no issues.

Do it! My Grendel is now my favorite gun by far.
I went with 24" as the original designer of this cartridge used 24" and one in 8" twist gives full 3 revolutions of spin on projectiles. Add dead air muzzle brake and its a flat shooting bitch.
@@adamlong54 no doubt that is the optimized length for the Grendel. I look at ballistics differently, and I live at 6000 ft and shoot at that and up to 12000 feet in elevation so my ballistics are crazy. If I was lower I would go 20" for range work and 16 to 18 for a walk around and hunting rifle. What are your ballistics looking like?
@@sortoftactical im in Texas and shoot hand loads 140grn sst hornady. H335 26.5 to 27 grn max loads. Leave my bullets long for less bullet jump to be more accurate. Have a dead air muzzle break shoots flat never have scope leave target while shooting. I run a 10x40 50mm ZOS SCOPE my range is only 200 yrds and Texas is mostly private land i have to drive 5 hrs to my buddies ranch to shoot distance. Haven't got out there yet to see .
Depends on your use, but regardless spend as much on the barrel as you can and skimp on the other frills
Don't bed the barrel, change the muzzle device first and free float the barrel, all you need
I don't see anything wrong with three shot groups when testing the mechanical accuracy of your gun. Longer strings test the quality of the ammunition or the skill of the shooter . A three shot clover leaf would be good enough for me right there.
I tend to agree. Each jas their place. I am actually tracking the overall accuracy of the gun for every single target I shoot. Results soon...

The angle I shot at stops that round at about 150 yards. If that doesnt stop it then there is a hill at 425 that is about 60 feet taller. I am responsible, you just cant tell from my videos.

@@sortoftactical I chose Grendel because I wanted something larger that would kill the pigs instead of wound them. I felt that the 223/556 just would not do the trick. Then I began to read about how high the coefficient was and how the round seems to fly through the air. It also has such a nice easy recoil and a joy to shoot. I have a 4570 and that got me into reloading so the extra cost of the Grendel some what is offset. So it was a win win for me and the gun certainly shoots for better than I am capable. I did choose the 24 inch barrel because that is what the ballistics were metered against. The downside is the Grendel is not a fast round but the long barrel uses every bit of the burn then the speed retention takes over. So although other rounds maybe faster at the get go, so many can’t stay with it pass a few hundred yards.The Grendel has some finesse to it.It is a heavy gun and I always have to use some sort of shooting stick with it. The AR platform it’s like owning an old Chevy or Ford, and that there’s so much you can do to them to modify them to your needs. There’s not another gun platform out there that will do this and it has contributed to its massive popularity. Reloading, also I find is very cerebral. Hell shooting requires you to think. At least you should. Sorry for the ramble. The one caution and criticism is what they had to do to the bolt to make the larger case fit. It is thinner so if you do reload be very aware this is a weakness. I have not heard of bolts failing with normal pressures. If you going to spend extra money invest in a top quality bolt or so I have been told.
@@crawford323 ramble on brother. I have found good speeds in my Grendel. With 123s I was getting 2600 with the ELDM and 2525 with hollow points. I took mine elk hunting, but no luck. Thats how comfident I am with the caliber.
If you go find the article in the free library: the relationship of barrel extension diameter to accuracy,
Bedding a rifle with loctite AND stainless steel shims OR fatter diameter barrel extensions AND loctite will get you a whopping 33% reduction in group size.
I did other things like truing and squaring the upper receiver face and the tedious processes of systematically finding the right torque on the barrel nut from 30 ft lbs to 53 ft lbs (53 ft lbs was my magic #) and looking for a nice cheap factory ammo to whittle down my group sizes AND get accuracy gains.
It was annoying to disassemble my damn rifle so many times tho haha
This was a while ago but I also did 3 or 4 iterations of torque and bedding. It has held great and continues to be a moa rifle.
