Wow. Amen. My husband and I have started our microgreens business and it was the same way. We prayed and knew we were going to be farmers. We have 10.22 acres but this is our first viable crop. We just started about 2 weeks ago and sold to some friends from our first harvest. We so enjoy seeing these videos. They inspire us to keep going and we would love to see more. We’ve done the webinar and got the free resources and are praying about getting the course. Videos like this make it almost impossible not to get it. Thank you Nate for all you do. It has already helped us so much.

You absolutely HAVE to show up at restaurants with samples and an educational brochure. I've never bothered with phone calls.

Hey all, thought I'd give some pointers on finding restaurant business. I have been a chef for the past 15+ years. 1.) Picking restaurants. Take an hour or so to go through yelp and find restaurants that say new American or gastro pub, don't be afraid to hit up really ritzy places. You have to find the ones with a high enough price point for dishes that they are willing to pay for a head chef who is paid well enough to know what micro greens are.
2.) The right time. Pick a Monday or Tuesday between about 1:30-3 pm. Why these days? Because it's when head chefs are usually at the restaurant doing paperwork after their busy weekend times. Go and knock on the back door of any ritzy "dinner service only" establishment and I almost guarantee that the head chef will be there, and will probably be glad for the distraction (paperwork is the worst!). Oh, and makes sure it's not the beginning of February or May (as Valentines day and mother's day takes up most of a chef's head space for about 2 weeks prior to each of these dates.)
3.). Almost all Chef's like to think that they "know a guy." Bring samples to leave along with a card. If you are able to chit chat let them know what your normal market price is and knock off a couple dollars just for them if they decide to add you as a vendor. This is important. You can't walk into a restaurant and expect to get $6 for a 2 oz clamshell of micro greens. You have to decide if it's worth it to you to produce more for slightly less profit. If so, Chef's are awesome guinnie pigs when it comes to testing new product. Just throw a sample and a note in with your weekly delivery and they'll most likely tell you exactly what they like/don't like about a new variety you have.
Hope this helps! Love the videos!

Nate, thank you for another awesome interview. Ryan, congratulations on starting a successful microgreens business!! For me labeling has been one of the most costly items of the business. Could you elaborate on using UPS for the printing of your labels? Thank you Ryan for sharing your experiences! Also, agree 100% on your struggles, exactly where I'm at right now. A lot of educating, knowing how to use them is what I found is the hurdle. I'm wondering if others experience this as well.

Hi Nate, I really enjoyed this video interview with you and Ryan. I'm getting ready to embark on my microgreens journey. We will capture this with a new UA-cam channel. Our family just purchased 32 acres in Cicero, Indiana. I heard you say on one of your videos that you live in Indiana too. What town do you live in? I will be checking out your course soon. I would definitely say to make more interview videos with your students. It is interesting to hear how they got started and how they are doing.

I was thinking about going door to door and giving out free samples of my microgreens. I am just starting my business in a small town in the mountains and was curious to what everyone thinks about this idea? Only other form of marketing I have is leaving biz cards and flyers at businesses. I do not want to sell to restaraunt. Only to individual buyers. I'm wanting this to be just supplemental income so I'm not struggling month to month on bills anymore

    Bonjour Nate 👋🏼,
Thank you for all the great info! Been binge watching several videos on UA-cam today. I particularly enjoyed ur interview with Don and this one with Ryan.
Just curious as to your thoughts on using soil vs. coconut fiber. I’m guessing it may have to do with mineral content and perhaps some seeds don’t do as well on the coconut fiber.
I first heard about microgreens when I was in Florida a couple of years ago and thought it would be a cool thing to try once I got settled in France, where I’m currently living. I still need to do a bit of research on the market here and all of the business laws, regulations and taxes...
I did stop by my local organic store this afternoon. They told me they usually carry 2-3 types (not sure if it was sprouts or microgreens), but they were sold out. They’re expecting a delivery tomorrow, so I’ll stop by again to see the pricing and name of supplier... I will also start hitting the farmer’s markets ASAP.
Next, I will have to find out where to get the seeds and materials here in France. Hoping I can get biodegradable packaging as I’m not crazy about using the plastic containers...
I’m signed up for ur webinar at 11am tomorrow.
    Take care and merci 🌱🌱🌱👋🏼
    Mimi
P.S. FYI, one of my nicknames as a kid was « Sprout » because I was so tall 🤣

Nate, I live in Florida, and the cottage food industry in my state does not allow me to sell anything that needs Refrigeration which they say includes cut leafy greens, or in my case harvested microgreens. Do you think it would be possible for me to grow microgreens in pots like a growing plant and just sell them live in the pots? Wondering if you've heard of anyone doing that and if they had Success With It. Thank you in advance for your help.

What does everyone think about getting local, state, and federal licenses/permits before starting to sell microgreens? Is it better to just get the business going first and then worry about jumping through all the bureaucratic hoops? And can they shut you down immediately if you are a new business that doesn’t have all the correct licenses yet? I live in Illinois.

Hi initially I found difficult to find seeds in UK but I was happy to get from USA and Russia. postage can be off footing. But it was great start and gave me breathing space to start growing to approach restaurants to offer the products. Now I found local supplier. good luck. Let me know if you need the names of suppliers. Pl note I am not on commission. I was helped by other well established growers and I would do to the fellow grower.
