    The sun in my face, breaking over the tree line, and my mockingbird singing just exactly like this one, thrills this old man's heart to the very core.

    There is nothing, nothing mind you, more relaxing and enjoyable than lying in a hammock on a blissful spring morning with your eyes closed, rocking to and fro while listening to a mockingbird. Nothing!

      acehole1a I agree to this so much. When I was on Summer vacation a few years back, I would get up early and do the exact same thing. Sadly, I never got to experience it again. Maybe I'll get to this Summer, who knows!

    I once heard a mockingbird imitate a Dusky Seaside Sparrow, some fifteen years after the Duskies were officially declared extinct. This indicates that some songs are learned from the parent birds and passed down through generations. A type of bird music culture, if you will.

      @marksavage7602 9 років тому +58

      Ok, already being amazed by Mockingbirds, and having a rescued one for a companion, I am stunned at your comment. To think that they had mimicked a bird that is now extinct and that song or call was passed down is just incredibly interesting.

    • @groomedtodie
      @groomedtodie 9 років тому +32

      Mark Savage well they copy what they hear almost indiscriminately, so of course they'd keep copying older mocking birds with different songs. They don't care if it's an extinct bird or a car alarm. I even got one to copy my whistle as a kid.

      Axel Bushing maybe the dusky seaside sparrow isn't actually extinct, we just don't know where to find them

      Something strange and beautiful and immeasurably sad about that.
      In South Australia, the lyrebird expertly mimics the sound of chainsaws cutting down its environment.

    We recently moved to Washington from California and the one thing I miss so much is the songs of the mockingbirds in our yard. I'd wake up in the middle of the night smiling and think, what in the heck am I smiling about and then I'd hear them and know. I don't know that I'd call them aggressive, but they are definitely protective of the babies! If their nests/babies are safe, they never tended to cause any trouble--at least not the ones in our yard. Also, depending on the sounds of your neighborhood, their songs vary. The songs our guys sang seemed more flowing and less choppy than this one, but this one is beautiful too. Thanks so much for sharing!

    Mockingbirds are my favorite. There are many living in the Dogwood tree and the huge azalea and Camilla bushes all around the front of my porch. I love when I can sleep with the window open and hear them as the sun is just coming up and at dusk. I've made some recordings and I'd love to figure out how to put them all together. This video is awesome and perfect for when I can't sleep with the window open. Thank you for this gem.

    A mocking bird nesting in my neighborhood learned to sing like my cockatiel. I think the bird taught others in the area...because even after my cockatiel passed away there was always a mocking bird making the same sound. It was like listening to a legacy continue on.

    Whenever I hear songs like this, I look for the highest pole or tree and will almost always spot the mockingbird in concert. I had one in my old neighborhood who would engage in whistling contests with me. He could match a pitch if I whistled it.

    Amazing! we don't get them here [UK] but one day from 5am-9 pm, there were two[ or three ?]blackbirds having a turf war, with the ''warning'' calls that were actually disturbing to listen to, as in unsettling. It was so loud, and they were so angry. Someone must have ''backed down'' as peace regained, with the more tuneful and melodious blackbird song [from one bird]. Blackbirds in summer [dawn chorus] I love.

    Dear June: Can't say enough good about N.Z. trip and the lovely Kiwis (people). I know this isn't mockingbird related, but have to say I LOVED the keas. Saw them up at a hostel located at top of ??? Pass? The pass that connects west to east N.Z. The keas were eating shoes, stripping cars of rubber bits. I fed them apples and such -----and they left my car alone! I like to think we communicated somehow. Thanks for into on tuis. I love everything bird. Kingfishers. Wow. A favorite.

    Soon our Big Beautiful Feathered Boys & Girls are due back in town, here in Port Costa - Northern California...
    I Can't Wait!!! 🐦
    Yes, all night long & into the wee hours of morning, we are obliged to bask in the sweet sounds of our Mocking Birds in Spring & Summer!
    In Mid-Summer, they sing during the day instead of @ night time, & you can clearly hear them mocking car alarms & horns too, but the best of the best is a melodic song they repeat back & forth to one another [is my favorite song of theirs]... I whistle along 🎶
    I Look So Forward To Their Return Every Year!!!
    Hurry Up, Spring... 🌱🌷☘🌼🍃
    My most favorite time to hear them is in the very early mornings on hot summer eves... We'll go for walks throughout the night because it's too darn hot to sleep, & they Serinade us as we walk - Neighbors also walk & comment on our Whistling Nightingales 🎵
    They're the BEST Part Of Mother Nature on our Hot Summer Evenings🌺
    - they & cool breezes from our Bay!
    They're songs are so Beautiful... makes us feel like ~ Everything Is Fine With Our World!

    I have had mockingbirds that sang only at night, and ones that sand during the day, I have read that non dominant males generally sing at night. They are ferocious birds that had all 3 of my cats terrified one summer as they dive bombed them non stop. The cats had to resort to ducking from bush to bush. Lol A very entertaining summer.

      Oh, that's so sweet - but it must get to be a little much... and I don't imagine there's Match.com for birds.

    What a lot of people don't realize: If you hear a lone mockingbird singing at night, and begin walking or riding a bicycle away from it - in any direction - as you get to the edge of the ordinal bird's range - you will begin hearing another mockingbird!! Go away from this one (again, in any direction) and you will pick up another! In the quiet night hours when no other birds are vocalizing, the mockingbirds come out and form a network that blankets the land. I think it's way more than individuals staking out territory or looking for mates...

      I heard a pair of Mocking birds loudly singing at 2AM... They were 100 feet apart from one another.

      The way they seem to be blanketing the land is an interesting observation. Is this the reason why the mainstream media is referred to as the Mockingbird Media?

      I tried this multiple times, it didn't work. They're just looking for mates and your scenario was likely a coincidence

      That's what's happening outside my bedroom window right now. I just went outside to see if I could find it and I was able to a pretty good look at it in my neighbors tree in their front yard and there's another one also probably about 100 feet away. Its very cool.

    It is fascinating, almost hypnotic, to listen to the infinite variety. I think some Mockingbirds are more artful in their presentation than others. This one is a little raucous, while others are more delicate...In fact, this guy gets better as he goes on. I do not hear the same pattern more than once in his repertoire. I LOVE IT!

    Truly amazing birds. I'm playing this clip outside, and a mockingbird decided to visit my porch about 4 feet from where I'm sitting. She didn't sing back, just looked at me quizzically. ❤

      Tip your hat or wave a hand and he'll jump up from his perch and flutter to show off his wing markings. He thinks it's another mockingbird challenging him.

    Even though they're gray, mockingbirds have gorgeous white and black wings and an awesome-looking shape. They are some of the smartest, most talented, and best singing birds ever. They're my second favorite bird. These birds started my love of birds, they are that awesome. Gotta love mockingbirds...they really make memories.
