In 1974 a friend asked me if I ever heard Dexter Gordon play sax. He told me he was a major player. I'd heard bird, Hawk, Prez, and a lot other's. I was sure there wasn't left anyone else worth really listening to. Then I heard Dexter. My life has been richer. Thank God for good friends.

I saw him in 1978 at the Berklee Performance Center. I was a student there and my work study job was the Friends Lounge as a bartender. He came in before the show, was quiet and cool. Did not ask for anything. Then nailed the gig. Deep tone. Cool player.

I TOTALLY AGREE ..... in music one cannot say 'the best' but sometimes when one hears music like this, it is very hard to keep that thought to yourself! Many times in my 81 yrs on this planet, I may have uttered those words, but, my dear fellow woodwind muso' I think, as Ernest Hemingway said, "it is a Movable Feast"

  • @rozenaxsax5133

Dexter's tone throughout this whole ballad is otherworldly. I've listened to this about a zillion times and it never ceases to amaze me because the depth of feeling in every note is incredible. I have the transcription and try and play it but all it does is remind me of what a genius is compared to an ordinary saxophonist. However, I thank the heavens that only one person was able to play like this and that was Dexter. It would demean his star if just anyone could match this if you know what I mean. This is musical perfection!
