He didn't separate his speaking voice from his playing. He was simply complete in everything. I happend to become good friends with Dexter and I seldom met a man so much himself. I miss him.
@@olebirgerpedersen That's a lovely description. He seemed to understand life. That wonderful smile of his never seemed more than a second away from breaking on his gentle giant's face. His phrasing, always behind the beat seemed to be saying take things in your stride, find you own pace and be yourself, don't try to be flashy or to be someone else
delivered with the dry dapper voice of a british news broadcaster... "and now... what's new? ......" hang on to your hats folks it's dex comin' at ya. great post... great tune... one of the greatest tenormen of all time.
Man it's so tricky to organically get beyond the early mid 60s without forcing the issue. It was an apex moment for jazz even as it was loosing it's popularity. But everyone from Film Composers to Bernstein to Europe's fading aristocracy and mainstream media was still deeply awear that jazz was really where it's at. Early 60s when giants still roamed the earth.
Great performance. I'm also glad to hear him saying part of the lyrics. It has been so long since I watched "Round Midnight" and heard he spoke. Music comes out from his soul. Who are other players?
First time - just enjoy Dexter's performance. He could do a ballad! Repeat views - start getting into it deeper. Besides the obviously wonderful sound, this can also be recommended visually - very nice stuff! How many cameras? This is how you record a live performance! The telling details - the cigarette, the drips off the end of his nose. 2nd or 3rd time you play this - pay attention to the focus pulls. Classy!
When he lived in Denmark, he became friends with the family of the future Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, and subsequently became Lars's godfather. Torben Ulrich was the owner of a little jazzclub in copenhague.
Yes a Conn 10M with a Dukoff Hollywood mouthpiece. That combo got stolen in Paris. After that he palyes A Selmer MArk VI with a Link Florida mouthpiece. The tone was good with that too - but never quite the same.
In America late 70s Conn was the high school jazz student horn you know the one lent to you by the school; you bought a Selmer mk6 as soon as you got the dough. I've never heard a Conn sound like this. It's always the musician not the gear.
@@paxwallacejazz Conn went through a decline after the war. Conn before the war was a totally different company, and their horns were amongst the best American saxophones
Great Dexter ! It's very interesting to compare this session with the one (What's new) recorded live in Paradiso (Amsterdam). A very nice theme, listen to the chords. Who is he playing with ??
Mr. Gordon was always "right as rain" the old phrase goes... he always " said" the lyric of the song just right. I'm not listening and intellectualizing. I'm just listening.
Suoni in maniera divina!". . . ma forse perché anche il suo essere gasato è di stile e non urta.
Liquid gold, Dexter Gordon.
It's crazy how similar his speaking voice and playing are. That's genuine style!

I think this is the greatest ballad ever recorded - the level of emotions felt in Dex's playing are unreal
The most beautiful interpretation of this nice song I ever heard, Dxeter is really a genious !!!
John Coltrane had a really beautiful play through of this song too, it was a medley along with Autumn in new York if I remember correctly.

I like this play, Our DEX forever !!!

Dexter Gordon was and IS the definition of cool.

This just made its way to my feed. I'll shut up now and listen and watch.
Superb! What a class act Dexter was, I never tire of listening to him. This a wonderful upload, thank you!
How could you tire of listening to him? What a wonderful sound and interpretation.
agree
Is there a better interpretation? Could there be possibly be? Such class, refinement and understated emotion. From a different age.
Absolutely magic 🥂🥂🥂
Awesome, and straight ahead. It's like he's painting a picture.
a giant of the saxophone, indeed.
You know, what can one say? Magnificent! A tip of the hat for my man Dex!

HOLY COW. HOLY COW.
There are two types of jazzmusicians - those who have found the right notes like dex, miles, evans, and jarret and -the rest who seldom find them

I'm pretty sure it is his Conn 10M. It was later stolen.
I have its alto little brother, the 6M. These horns cry sweetly like no one.

❤
Απίστευτο.
it's great so at soul
Lol if you think those earlier musos didn't fuss around with new horns and mouthpieces. They were just as crazy as musicians today.
Much better version. Thanks for the upload!

Dexter Gordon sans fard, sans artifice, au jeu dépouillé à l'extrême, accompagné par un Georges Gruntz délicat, c'est ''What's New''.
