This is a great reminder that allowing a computer to pollute the sacred purity of a hardware setup is a bloody good idea! This doesn't even need to necessarily be VCV and doesn't have to be a Digitakt but it's a really compelling collection of ideas for those two things in particular. I wonder if the Octatrack has the facility to set up the MIDI CC knobs, that would be really useful for me! Cheers for the inspiration! (I am also a Greg but consider myself a fairly normal size, I guess)
This is great! For the DT as OT patch, you could set the midi trigger that starts the simpliciter recording to FILL which would let you trigger a new recording whenever your holding the PAGE button down. You could also set it to 1st, if you just wanted to automatically record a new loop every time you switch patterns.
Let me know how it goes! I tried VCV Rack a few times but didn't really click with it as a standalone thing. It blew my tiny mind when I realised I can use it to compliment my hardware 🤣
@@tinygregmusic Yeah I've had a hard time to figuring out how to incorporate it with my hardware. But seeing how you did it, it seems pretty straightforward to go crazy! I might go insane with modular and Digitakt together.
Something I really enjoyed with the digital was jamming on it with a friend, him on the digi, me controlling the overbridge outputs, effects and computer magic. Hardware and software are made to be friends!
Heya - I've been really enjoying your videos from the void :) After seeing this I experimented myself with Digitakt/VCV. I found I can use the Audio16 module with Overbridge engine running in the background. Gives you access to all the outputs of overbridge like it was your sound card. Thought i'd let you know in case the extra load of the VST was hurting yours/others computers. Cheers
A++ all around - also definitely suggest you check out some of stoermelders MIDI utilities+expander alternatives, as well as throwing some more gear in the mix with his MIDI Merger modual & one of the MIDI Recorders from Chinenual/F.W.!
In re learning Clouds, I find it easier to use Supercell, which runs the same "firmware" but it has the different Blend modes broken out as different knobs.
Have you found a way to get all of Overbridge's outputs into VCV Rack? Host-XL has 8 outputs but DT has what, 2*10 output channels? (Master, Input, 8 channels, all stereo)
Very good stuff, and timely considering I'll have my DT in a few weeks and I was planning on trying VCV Rack with it. Is the audio from VCV R running back to the DT over USB, with you monitoring it from there, or are you monitoring everything from the PC?
Yes that's right, there's a VCV module called "midi CC to CV". That module listens to midi CC inputs and coverts them to a CV signal to control anything in VCV Rack
@@chambre466 yeah the value of the CC message (0-127) is being converted into an analog voltage (well, one with 127 possible values, so not true analog, but close enough).
See, this is how I view Ableton Live - as an enormous, ultra-powerful effects box for my DT/ST/OT. I have individual external instrument tracks routed from Overbridge for the DT and ST out 2 pairs of stereo outs to the Octatrack into it's stereo pairs to be looped, mangled, and all that jazz, and back in to Live. On my Push 3 I have instant access to each track on the DT/ST - simultaneously if I wanted - via record arm. I can simply press and hold the track selector to arm. I can then set up macros for controlling effects I put on them or for parameters in the DT/ST. On the Syntakt there is a section for the modulation wheel, breath controller, velocity, and pitch in the setup settings where I can assign some parameters to them such that when I articulate the mod/breath/pitch strip they will be expressed and the same with using velocity as a modulation source. The thing to consider is latency from effects and audio conversion points, but after a little testing I was able to adjust the track delay to get everything accurate within 1-3 milliseconds when turning the Octatrack audio track off and direct monitoring.
That's crazy. I need to get into ableton and push! Do you have issues with overbridge where the samples are triggered out of time for the first bar? I get that a lot from the DAWs that I use and it makes it unusable as a performance tool...
@@tinygregmusic No not really. I’ve come across comments about that in the past, but OB has come a long way and it’s been pretty stable for me. I mean, as stable as anything else Ive ever used tbh. More stable than Akai’s midi implementation for damn sure.
@@tinygregmusic I’m glad you read my comment here because I think it’s an incredibly powerful hybrid setup and Ive been trying to share it with the “hardware community” for lack of a better wording. Maybe I’ll put up a video sometime.
@@tinygregmusic Being able to go directly to a track on the DT or ST and play it as an instrument with velocity and after touch - or all of them at once if you want - yeah it’s really something. Also, being able to draw in very high resolution automation curves is an advantage over the wonderful albeit stepped and therefore lower resolution of the Elektron. The same goes for midi notes. Recording your performance to the piano roll is much more detailed and sounds much better than the very quantized midi recording on the devices.
I do use overbridge sometimes when I want to effect separate tracks but if I'm just working with the master signal then I just use the 1/4 outputs into my interface 😁 How's the analog heat? I've been looking at it a lot recently and wondering if I can save up to get one myself ☺️

Great video - thank you
tiny greg this is where i’m hoping to go. into the hardware software meeting of minds. thanks for sharing
Thanks for commenting! Up until now I've almost exclusively been out of the box, but this combination of using VCV Rack has really opened my eyes!
Sick demonstration fam, digi plays well with so many things its nuts
This is such a great use of VCV Rack! Definitely gonna try this out myself.

This is so good
I have been using an iPAD with MiRack (VCV rack as an App on iPad). Great job showing the benefits!
Can you do all this manipulation on mi rack? Thank you
@tlukhovskyyuriy9166 the only one you can't do is the Overbridge one. Everything else should be doable
@@Calamindir thank you

at 1:40, I don't get it. CC to CV? is it still in your computer that this is happening, right?

try it with the OT too, please
How did you know that's what I was planning to do? 😉
I guess that's because the OT force respect. Besides I own one@@tinygregmusic
Last question, is it over bridged?
because I m considering getting the VCV rack, but as you know the OT does not overbridge
but I have the Analog Heat that supports OB
