most underrated synth in a decade
So true! The combination of sequencer and synth is magnificent! //Jason
Yep, i use two!
One of the best looking synths ever made
That it is.. as well as sounding great and performing well..its a clear winner in my book! //Jason
I returned the Hydrasynth desktop and got the Medusa this week instead. I’m hoping that I did the right thing 🤩
Ooh that's quite a u turn.. I'm sure you'll enjoy the Medusa though.. // Jason
So how did the change go??? I've just ordered one today so I hope I did the right thing too 🤣
@@JamesRamboPearce hey 👋, yes it is definitely a totally different synth compared to the hydrasynth; but I’m very happy i changed it. I have a lot of synths already but the Medusa has a unique sound and workflow. Sounds massive and really shines when you run it through delay and reverb. It is a true sound sculpting machine. Not for the one hopping for the present. You have to be patient learning the sequencer but overall is excellent. Great for making crazy sequences. Make sure it has the latest update and when you turn it on/off bring the volume all the way down. Let me know what you think about it 🤙🏼
I traded my hydra desktop for a second Medusa, sounds awesome paired with a Hx Stomp
I don't like "harsh" synths, but I do love Medusa. I have to always run it through another external LPF to reduce the shrillness, but overall what comes out of this is so expressive and deep in a wonderful way. I'm glad you mentioned that the sound character has a vintage vibe because that's exactly what I get out of it despite the very modern interface. I wish there more demos out there showing off its musical and vibey characteristics rather than all the harsh/shrill sounding bleeps and blops.
Well said! It's such a great synth.. and you're right, there really aren't enough videos out there showing this beauty off! Glad you enjoy yours //Jason
Nice review, mate! I just finally got one of these a few weeks ago for about $600 USD and it rivals my Sequential Take 5 and OB-6. I actually spend more time with it than anything. Not because of the difficulty of use, but because of the fun. For anyone curious, find one before they are all in "Fair" condition. It's a pearl.
For the price, there is nothing to beat it. But money aside, it sounds beautiful, you can dial as much of analog or digital tones you want and anywhere in between, and that's before you realize that you have a full fledged sequencer with parameter locks and MPE that can be used as a synthesis tool as well. I've had mine for nearly a month now and it's been a blast!
So glad to hear that! Its a beast... I love that you have a mix of digital and analogue. Keep enjoying! //Jason
Awesome...
Why thank you! Glad you enjoyed - what a great synth. //Jason
It has a touch of the dreadbox abyss and hades inside. Weird synth indeed but is beautiful...on the other hand that matrixbrute at the back
It so does - Weird and Beautiful - very well put!//Jason
@@ThomannSynthesizers it excels in industrial and dark techno sequences by the sound of it also. This with an octatrack a virus a techno system and an iridium or a jdxa
.mmmm total war.
Wet dream jason ..wet dream😂 saving for a techno system tho.
soon order tmann soon...🖤
@@ThomannSynthesizers i was gonna take it 2 months ago but you could not haunt me..(used mfb dominion 1 in stock tmann) couldnt resist its calling so i brought it home as is becoming a very rare synth. Thanks for the ups express low costs btw best santa knock in my door ever haha 😂
I got no music skills , if i would buy one of these you think i would be able to make some cool music ?
You could use to improve your skills for sure.. but be prepared to spend time and not get great results at first.. only with dedication can we achieve greatness... Sounded very philosophical there for a minute.. but true words, time and effort equal reward! //Jason
OK so this or the Deepmind 12 or a monologue xd? I do reggae dance hall...
Hi there!
I own the Medusa, and don't think it sounds quite reggae. It's a bit harsh, perfect for me but not everyone I guess. It's often a bit aggressive (which I like).
I don't know the DM12 (too much menu diving, I like hands-on), but the XD can sound quite duby, the analog oscillators are "cleaner", "more classic" than those of the Medusa; but you still have the multi-engine to go crazy with if you want to (some great third-party oscillators out there). Gonna buy one soon :)
The Medusa doesn't have buitl-in effects, whereas the XD has three simultaneous fx engines.
Oh and keep in mind the Medusa is paraphonic, not polyphonic: in mono, all oscs stacks together, in "p1" you can play three note with one analog osc and one digital osc on each voice, and on "p2" you have six voice, with one osc on each (first three notes are played by the analog ones, the other by the digital ones). So it's cool, really, but unusual, it quickly sounds weird (the synth encourages you to go weird if you ask me). The XD is four times polyphonic. Classic (again) chords.
So yeah the Medusa is a wonderful and strange machine, but I think the philosophy and sound of the XD would be best fitted for your style.
The Medusa wasn't very popular before this edition, but it gained a lot of visibility; maybe now your local music store will have one for you to try it out (the XD can be found anywhere). Go try them!
Hope I helped.
I'd say XD for reggae/dub..the fx are lovely
useless bragging, because you do not tell us how it's done, or is it just presets and I scolled over it because too much talk around it?
