Just ordered the cannon L, was very impressed test driving the base model. The only people who seem to be bad mouthing them are people who have found and spent 70k plus on something else. Can’t wait for mine to get here
I think you are right mate. To be honest I was hesitant originally but after test drive I could not justify a 70k vehicle for what I use it for anyhow. @@TheRobMarkby same mate, I test drove a poverty pack hilux and dmax and couldn’t come to terms with spending 55k and ending up with no features except a Toyota badge. I only drove the cannon on the insistence of a friend. There is very little justification for what others are charging and when they see their market share fall to cars like cannons they will have a rethink.
I had a GW steed for 4 years. Not one issue mechanically. What would you prefer, looking cool in a ranger that may break for double the price or something cheaper as reliable
I went from a 4.0 L Ford Territory and bought one of these I must say I was a bit concerned about being a 2.0L but it’s quicker than the territory, it’s a bit more rigid but for the money it’s good value, The DPF burn self cleaning light is a bit of a pain coming on regularly, once I had the spanner icon come up so I did the manual burn which fixed that……the next day on the freeway it starts self cleaning again. Apparently there is a recall on something about the head rest the crash test dummy didn’t approve LOL and my clock just changes time whenever it feels like it I think that’s just an update for when I take in for its 2nd service, also done 13,000 k’s on mine 👍
The DPF is a software update. Never had the clock issue. Head rests, not a recall as such but to get the 5 star AnCap rating they are changing headrests at next service.
Update on dealer. I moved to a new dealer in Melville. Autostrada were just really bad at their role. I found the new dealers service and care much much better. I still found GWM's response to my concerns less than expected, but from what I understand most manufacturers are poor in the warranty space. This seems to be an industry wide issue and will only change if there is much more customer pressure to do so. All in all I'm still happy with the vehicle of course, and any negative I have reported has nothing to do with the current operation of the Cannon X
I have the exact same issue with the lag and found it can be actually dangerous when taking off at roundabouts with that little stall. Im also with Autostrada and find them terrible, so will be looking into the dealer in Melville. Thanks for the tip 👍
Also HATE the lane keep assist and agree its a total pain in the ass. I have been told by GWM the reason it turns on automatically everytime is to do with the 5 star ANCAP. It needs to come on every start up otherwise they wouldn't of gotten the rating.
@@TheRobMarkby first upgrade I got was a hike it xs throttle controller to adjust throttle sensitivity. Hit the launch button on that and your spinning the wheel off the mark with zero hesitation. Not something you use all the time and I actually use mine to tone down the touchyness of throttle.
Rob one way to avoid that lag is to use the auto brake feature when you stop. with that engaged the motor seems to preload for take off and its much cleaner off the mark with far less lag.
Yep but when kicking on from a deceleration that’s not possible. Still as mentioned I’ve learnt to drive around the issue now. Now if only the RH turn gear selection concern could be addressed. Ffs it is just a celebration of software how hard can it be 🤦🏼♂️
Is that right? It was sold as having adaptive tint? Turns out it is a privacy glass and you are right to some degree, it does provide some uv and some heat protection but not as much as a dark tint. Lesson is never believe the salesperson, I just did not take much time thinking about the purchase if I’m honest. But it worked out still, now I think I will have to get tint though 🤣
I just booked in to get the car tinted. Going to have to go illegal on the rear to get any heat and significant UV protection. Front I can get 20% and that's as high as I can go. Still I think it will improve the performance significantly. Tint folks said they dislike privacy glass as thier tint products provide far greater benefits but when privacy glass is fitted legally your limited. 👍well I've learnt something anyway. 😁

@@PROCOPO got the tint, heaps cooler and looks nice as well. Not legal on the back but to get a reasonable UV protection had to go a bit darker. Still fades nice to the front 20% legal tint.
@TheRobMarkby i know it sounds crazy but i did the same on my car, you can get a clear ceramic tint done that blocks out something like 95% uv, dont quote me but check it out. Got mine done at tinthaus.
I did not relies the red bit on the fob was to start the ute ? I just tried it but no go? what step am I missing? I have the 2023 model 4x4 X. Iv had 2 cannons the 1st one was 2022 4x2 how ever I found the lag is significantly reduced in the 2023 and less of an issue. I find sport has more pep and affective response at busy intersections. I feel safe knowing I can adjust the vehicle to meet my requirements. I do city and rural travel with ease. At my age this vehicle is a life line.

47k, found dealers to all be floggs who just can’t seem to get it right. apart from that the car is brilliant! I’ve had no dramas with the actual car. On HT’s still and they work really well for me on road and sand. I’m on the beach and on the rear tail gate I have noticed some rust on the bolts but you have to keep in mind that I am on the beach a lot almost daily and have salt water all over the vehicle. Apart from that no rust I’ve found. Found the air con was fine, just takes 2 mins to cool the car down when super hot. Still really wish lane keeper assistance was a one button off.
Hey Wil, Not one major issue or concern, the need to turn off lane keeper assist every time is still a thing and the music volume not being able to reduce when in reverse but goes down when pulled up at stop 🛑 or traffic lights 🚦 is bloody silly. Apart from that all seems pretty great. Zero buyers remorse. In fact everything adds up. I did put a full UV tint on it though, worth doing. Love it.
For anyone watching, the 2023 onwards have had the ECU retuned and that hesitation and surge are gone. Anyone with an older one should have the software update done
Except the software updates don’t always work. I still have this issue despite having had mine serviced and updated always with GWM dealer. The right hand turn transmission overrun has not been resolved either. Again only apparent if you accelerate from 1st and turn right. Easy enough to drive around.

No issue fitting the catch can. ProVent are an excellent brand and come with all you need. As far as warranty they said nothing but truth is when you fit aftermarket items they would have to prove that the part was responsible for any damage and as a catch can simply takes crap out and stops it being pushed through your intake into the cylinders, it actually helps your engine and stops carbon deposits building up and choking the engine performance. So I don’t foresee any issues. 🤙🏻
Not at all. The company would have to prove catch cans or diesel fuel filters cause a problem as opposed to avoid them. That would be impossible from the advice I received.

Hey Rob, thanks for the great review, could I ask where you bought a new "X" model for 42k ? I cant find the X under 47k at the moment ? Do think the X is worth 3.5k extra over the L model ? I own a Cannon X with 30000kms. I have always been a supporter of the brand until now. I went to the dealer Autostrada in Western Australia, for a service and had them look at a minor warranty issue for a delaminating park brake button, along with recalling for the headrests to be replaced. This work was booked in over a month prior to the service date. It’s been over a year and when going to book my 30000kms service I enquired again as the the park brake and it turn out that even though the dealer told me it was warranty and would be replaced they had not even ordered the part and not submitted a warranty claim to GWM/HAVAL. Not only this they did not replace the recall item on the headrests. When I approached GWM/HAVAL HQ I was told it’s my problem and they have nothing to do with it. So basically, your on your own. Ok so you might think this is a dealer/service department issue but can you imagine if this was a larger warranty issue and this was the support you expect to receive.

Still all that aside it’s 38,000kms plus now and still no resolution. It’s a simple matter, a small bit of delaminating material on a handbrake button but the poor response for all dealers and GWM is perhaps symptomatic of deeper warranty issues. If it was a serious problem would I still be waiting over 2 years later for a suitable outcome?!
Hi Rob, well done on a down to earth review by someone uses the ute as their daily drive. I am very tempted to purchase one of these utes however, one of my primary concerns is the apparent lack of air conditioner performance as it can and does reach 40 degrees Celsius on occasion in summer where I live. You are not the only reviewer to comment on this - just wondering if you could expand on your overall view of a/c performance? Thank you.
Hi Ian, It reaches 40c here in WA often enough as well. I ended up putting a high quality dark UV resistant tint over all windows and use a front window reflector. The air con works as well as any other now. I think it was that security glass that GWM use was not stopping any sun/UV or heat and with a good quality Scotch or 3M tint you will definitely not have issues, well it fixed my concerns re air con.
on my third gwm and had no problems, back up service and resale was good it really comes down to how good or bad the dealer is, ive had crap toyota dealers before so nothing to do with the ute, its the dealer that makes or breaks it
Fair comment indeed but my issue was more about GWM support when the dealer let me down. I did end up moving dealer and had a positive experience. I hope this dealer can actually gain the support of GWM.

I mean I don’t use it and it’s a pain to turn off every time the car starts but apart from that my understanding is that people who like to be told how to drive think it works relatively well. Gearbox calibration. Now I understand that when accelerating from a stand still slightly or totally heading downhill there is some issue when it comes to changing gears at times. Apparently there has been a software fix. I’ve at times experienced this issue. I asked at the 15000kms service and they said there was a fix in the last update but it did not work as well on the Cannon X version. I have no idea why. Apart from that the gear box has been very very good. Will there be more updates and patches, yup no doubt, this is the way of modern vehicles, so much software, so many updates, to expect different from different badges would be foolish I expect. But if you are having issues I am not aware of mate please tell all you know as more information the better for other who may experience these or other issues. 😀
Good question, I’ve not got one yet but I have seen them on some other youtube vid when I was looking around. The sales guy, who clearly can not be trusted, also told me that I could get one for about 200 bucks, that they were happy to sell me of course. I’ll see if I can find the name of it. I do know a company called savage do a lot of aftermarket stuff for the cannon (don’t buy the custom dash mat, it never fitted correctly but they gave me a speedy refund so…👍
I bought a triton GSR 2022 .better resale and not worth it just at past gwm steed resale and gwm v240 resale to a triton .Chinese cars a great way to loose your resale value stupid is as stupid does
Glad you can see into the future with such clarity. I can almost buy two GWMs for your GSR. Also looked at ford, Mitsubishi et al and for what you get was a no brainer imo. But you enjoy your GSR Peter, stupid is indeed as stupid does.
I’m pretty sure that would not be an issue, as I mentioned my mate is 6.4 and he sits in the passenger seat with plenty of room for adjustment. I recognise that driving and passenger are different though. I would not think the standard Cannon would work well as it lacks adjustment options that the X has. Importantly the steering wheel. So if you look at the X variant I think you would find it very accommodating. Best bet is to have a test drive of course, at least sit in one. Let me know what you find out
Not sure if you've got an answer yet but i'm 6'8 and its the most comfortable drive i've had, trust me its amazing - but the telescopic wheel in the X was a must for me. The Base was still comfortable enough i did 300kms on a test drive of one before i bought my X

Well service done, new headrests, only one DPF burn so far, clock on the dash still displays different time to on the screen ffs

Get away from Autostrada as soon as you can, they are incompetent at best.
There was an update to the car in August to fix the throttle response. Not sure if yours has it or not. Apparently it does the job.

Just FYI the back door glass is only coloured it’s not tinted so the suns heat and UV will still come through

never had the lag on pull off but mind you I have the 2x4 and they have less issue than the 4x4

Good question, I’ve not got one yet but I have seen them on some other youtube vid when I was looking around. The sales guy, who clearly can not be trusted, also told me that I could get one for about 200 bucks, that they were happy to sell me of course. I’ll see if I can find the name of it. I do know a company called savage do a lot of aftermarket stuff for the cannon (don’t buy the custom dash mat, it never fitted correctly but they gave me a speedy refund so…👍
Oh it was to change the throttle map.

I’m pretty sure that would not be an issue, as I mentioned my mate is 6.4 and he sits in the passenger seat with plenty of room for adjustment. I recognise that driving and passenger are different though.
I would not think the standard Cannon would work well as it lacks adjustment options that the X has. Importantly the steering wheel. So if you look at the X variant I think you would find it very accommodating.
Best bet is to have a test drive of course, at least sit in one. Let me know what you find out
Not sure if you've got an answer yet but i'm 6'8 and its the most comfortable drive i've had, trust me its amazing - but the telescopic wheel in the X was a must for me. The Base was still comfortable enough i did 300kms on a test drive of one before i bought my X
@@tbfg5690 brilliant. 6.8 and comfortable! I must say that is impressive, I can’t even think that there are many vehicles that you would not have to alter the seat to fit in comfortably.
