- www.tesco.com/ . Vintage Tesco synth pop advert from 1982. Features the very best 80's synth pop backing music. From back when 'Fun' advertising was very different to what we see on TV now, but proving that Tesco has always had a light sense of humour. Check it out, check it out!
This adverts soundtrack reminds me of
SUPERMARKET SWEEP :D I loved that show
This is what it was based on!
I keep coming back to videos like these every few years to remind myself of the depressing effects of inflation. Most of these products have tripled or even quadrupled in price in the late 2010s.
It's infuriating because most things still cheap it's taxes and scams on behalf of supermarkets playing poverty it's sickening when I was a kid early 90s £1 could get me a mars bar ribena and a bag of crisps I'd still get ABIT of change you try that now
Not in real terms - people got paid far less than they did now. A lot of the prices here are substantially more expensive than they are now - you can get the Pedigree Chum for example for around half the real terms price here. Multiply the prices by roughly 5 to get the equivalent in late 2023 prices.
@@imDERBYtilIdie1884actually, in real terms, most things are substantially cheaper than they were here. You forget - people were paid substantially less then too. Thats why there's such a thing as "real terms" prices because the value of money changes over time. To get the equivalent of these prices in late 2023 money, multiply them by 5. Not as cheap as they look.
Wow, that theme song. So 80's! Love it
From when Tesco's was fab. Funky music there!
the track was written by David Reilly and the vocals are by Clare Torry who sang with Tangerine Dream and Max Bygraves.
It was the catchy 'check it out' jingle and the attractive 'Checkout 82' branding that really made the difference
OMG! At Tesco stores INCLUDING Stevenage?!
Pounds and ounces still in use!
I still walk out of my local Tesco Express and sing "Today's Tesco!"
prize yogurt forgot about those lived on them when I was a teenager lol
I want this song as my ringtone!
That title track reminds me of Dale Winton's "Supermarket Sweep" :)
fantastic!
If you want to step back in time, visit the Tesco in Worksop. It hasn't been done up since the mid 80's. It's the only Tesco left I know that looks exactly the same inside as all the others did back then... (As of typing this comment)
Wonder if it still does now. Most of the early 70s era "standard out-of town supermarket sized" stores were rebuilt as "Extras" in the early 2000s .
remember it well!!! thought the music was great,
The first 12 seconds of the ad were quite modern and futuristic - then kicks in the old fashioned music (even by 82 standards) why does it start so differently to how it ends lol?
The Stevenage reference is probably due to either IBA rules of the era on advertising meaning a store had to be cited, or it was a regional advert, ITV being the only channel with adverts on for nearly all of 1982.
1982. I'd go back to then, if given the option, before you could blink. I was 11. Life was good.
Obviously watched too much TV as a kid, well remember these! How sad is this, we used to go 'Check it out!" in the playground at school, they had us well trained!
Woah, retro! :D
is it just me or does the woman on the front of the old pg tips boxes look like ET?
@halsalli yeah and they're like £4.29 now ;)
if you'd loaded up on tesco shares in 1982 you'd be rolling in cash right now
wtf 29p for a 6 pack of penguins?!?! its like 29p per bar these days!
it's the supermarket sweep theme!:O
*CHECK IT OUT*
*TODAYS TESCO*
Let's turn this motherfucking party out
LOL. And what's more that was on special offer - standard price 31p!
1 and a half pence off Penguin biscuits and 2p off PG Tips. Not exactly the eye catching bogofs we see now!
There’s another Tesco’s checkout ad from 1977 penguin bars in that one were 19 and a half p in this one there 29 and a half p. Inflation hey
I can't get over the 59p PG Tips!!!
I bought a pack of 70 PG Tips tea bags for £1 last month
@@RetroGUY77 I remember that style of packaging with the picture of the tea-picking lady on the front. She looked very serene, not like the people who really pick the leaves- and get paid 5 rupees per month for toiling in the blistering sun.
if you bought 1000 quids worth of tesco shares in 1982 you could sell them for about 100 thousand today.
Me too! And I thought merchants didn't use 1/2 p in their prices.
Of course they did, until 1984. The 1/2p was originally introduced to moderate price rises in and after 1971, and also keep the old 6d coins (2.5p) in circulation for a few more years.
However, years of double-digit inflation peaking above 24% meant that the £ in 1982 was worth less than half of what it was in 1970- and the 6d disappeared anyway in 1980. So, the 1/2p was instead used to disguise the scale of price rises- instead of putting something up from 28p to 30p, you would put it at 29.5p. Eventually, the 1/2p was withdrawn as it was worthless and its utility gone.
Stevenage was their reference store I guess.
Food has actually got cheaper in real terms since 1982.
anyone remember the festive version of this? De duu duu de duu christmas 82 de duu duu duu duu duu de duu duu.
Yes, I do!!
Ultravox's Cann&Currie responsible for the tune!
we... erm... had half-pence coins in currency then, god i feel pre-historic now! >:o
07.2007
I'd forgotten all about prize yoghurts
Check it out! ...... 🎶 "41 years ago Tesco!" 🎶 🤣
@halsalli How much are penguin bars now? :O
What will food cost in 2042
@buttershex It's the same everywhere. there are 20 in Cardiff alone. Tecso are of the mindset that if you are going to spend money, they want to make damn sure you spend it with them. but what happens when there isnt any competition left?
Give me Sainsburys any day!
@caxtonman explain how you came to that conclusion?
Check 8 out
Old tesco
Today's Tesco was the slogan song in the advert.
Graham Pearson what
@caxtonman Tesco was no2 retailer Sainsburys was no1,
@HGbunny Yes, you are correct, Tesco are intent on world domination. they now have a presence in Europe and are trying to break into the US as well. Although the UK is a small Island, £1 in every £7 spent here is with Tesco. not content with a supermarket in every town, they have sometimes up to 20. They are the killer of high street small business.
Ha! You have a top memory.
Eew, from how you and the other folks above describe it, it sounds a lot like our WalMarts over here across the pond!
that looks like the 02 logo lol
wow a 1 1/2p reduction on penguins. Retailers used halfpenny markings until 1984 when it was withdrawn from circulation. The halfpenny was used manily agains rounding up of prices after decimalisation. When is it time to get rid of the 1p and 2p??
i wunder where 02 mobile got there logo from......
Why did this all turn polical its a Tesco advert for goodness sake!
what happens if you only put one thing at something and a half p , would you get half p change
Rab9+10 yes they had halfpenny coins until 1984
Aww. That's too bad. Seems like cost cutting maneuvers in the past 31 years have really turned something special into utter junk. I always have to look in this one special section or go to a specialty store to get things that are REAL sweets with real ingredients. At least here in the U.S.
Yer, but 29 1/2 pence for 6 penguins. Bargain!!!! I bet they could sell at '82 prices and still make a profit.
@caxtonman Can't blame them for trying.
I bet they're not still charging mid-80s prices though, mores the pity.
Cheggidout, indeed...!
To get the equivalent of these prices in real terms 2023 money, multiply them by roughly 5. Not as cheap as they look.
@Kevo00
I have a friend who works at Tesco HQ in hertfordshire, this is where I get my "evidence" from.
*I used the dictionary definition of "globalism"
*we DON'T need to invest in china - Britain was once a strong, proud nation and it can be again if we regained our soverignty and stopped focusing on finances so much and more on manufacturing.
*I don't have (or trust) pensions for the reason you outlayed
*We live in one world but we don't need a one world government
@DaveyC95 Yes, whilst probably making you redundant!
Our store in winchester has has a huge refit and its now a tesco extra. Full of extra shite.
1982 that was the year i was born and as a little girl i remember i had 50p and it got me can of coke crisps chocolate now a days 50p nearly gets u a can of coke scary
I remember getting that for 10p in 1974.
yeah...but every little helps
I'm gathering Tesco is in England? I'm in the states & have nver heard of it. But I see Pedigree dog food had brand called "Chum." That's hilarious, I'm thinking the stuff they lure sharks with. You open the can (tin) and it's all fish heads, intestines, scales, and blood.
@halsalli was nothing to do with Thatcher about price increases
When did the 1/2 pences actually disappear? I was born in 1981 and I do vividly remember the £1 Notes but no memory at all of 1/2 pences -even though my Mother insists I must remember them lol. I wish the prices in Tesco now were the same then as they are now, A fortnightly shop there costs me over £80 (just for food) now bloody hell how times have changed.
You have to be very careful about comparing prices in different eras, because the value of money changes. People back then got paid substantially less than they do now, and prices back then in what we call "real terms" (which factors in inflation and pay rises) were a lot more expensive. To get the equivalent in 2023 money, multiply these prices by 5. Nowhere near as cheap as they look.
P.S. half penny coins were withdrawn in 1984.
This when Tesco's used to sell food, instead of trying to kill the High Street by selling everything else.
Soooooo right. Got greedy. That's shareholders. Bet it coincided with the last of the founding family members leaving the board.
I wish they were that cheap today.
@SteveFusionX Pretty inaccurate definition actually. It doesn't have to mean economic globalisation. As it is we have more pluralism today than in 1910. In 1910 six or seven governments dominated the entire planet, London was the only major stock exchange and financial centre and most major currencies were equal because they were tied to gold. There were plenty of multinationals then as now, infact the UK butchery trade was dominated by British-South American and Aus/NZ firms.
Wow! This ad is informative as I never knew there was a 1/2P coin in Britain, at :35 I was about to comment on it, but did my research and my original comment is no more. Very interesting.
The halfpenny coin was discontinued in 1984. It had been a part of the old imperial money system for centuries, but when decimalisation occurred in 1971 it was initially going to be withdrawn at that point. However, a new halfpenny coin was minted to ease the transition to decimal currency. One of the tiniest little coins you'll ever see. It was always intended to be phased out within a few years. Brits resented its withdrawal though, as it meant that shops would be rounding up their prices to the nearest whole penny. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but we were in a rather grim recession at the time and those half pennies soon added up. On a personal level, I can quite vividly recall the pound note being replaced by a coin when I was 2 years old. But I have no recollection of the half penny whatsoever, despite being 4 years old when they were withdrawn. Which shows how little they were used by that point. The government deliberately minted a really tiny coin to frustrate people, and discourage the fondness for using them. It worked. And shops were encouraged to start charging whole pence throughout the years leading up to it's withdrawal, so as not to suddenly alert people at once of prices going up. That didn't work so well, market traders in particular used the half pence to get the edge over their competitors.
The 1/2p coin was taken out of circulation as it had got to the point that most people wouldnt bother to pick it up if they dropped one on the street and if it was the only change after buying something it was common for the shopper to simply leave without accepting it.
The 1 and 2p coins may soon suffer the same fate.
@Jack Williams 1/2p in 1982 was worth more in real terms than 2p is today.
@TheRenaissanceman65 if you go back far enough there used to be half farthings and quarter farthings as well.
changed in MANY stores? so what's that, every one except the one nearest you lol.
Er, have you been to Morrisons lately?
Yeah' i wondered that. It's a very random thing to say :S
@Kevo00
I suppose the reason I highlited the topic of governments intervening is - I have alot of suspicion for them and companies they get involved in.
I mean tony blair desperately wanted to get Tesco setup across the middle-east (after he practically wiped out everything there)
And now our latest prime minister is spending alot of time, travelling across the world opening up Tesco stores.
Who really benefits from this?? Except the CEO's at tesco?
Do shop workers get paid more? nope
and no wonder with today's prices they make 3billon GBP profit!
@ShowPolitics Ahh, the voice of a non-shop owner........!
@SteveFusionX There would be no point Tesco creating its own money, because it would have no external value.
@halsalli I think you'll find the Labour governments of the 70's weren't exactly experts in controlling inflation either ;)
globalization or globalisation (ˌɡləʊb ə laɪˈzeɪʃən)
- n
The emergence since the 1980s of a single world market dominated by multinational companies, leading to a diminishing capacity for national governments to control their economies
The process by which a company, etc, expands to operate internationally
You say we are less globalised than in 1910!??
How can that possibly be? (on a practical level)
No one forces anyone to shop there, remember this is the biggest private employer in Britain. Tesco's tax payments probably keep the country going. Times change, people want convenience, Tesco are providing a service. Choice is yours.
@Kevo00
Hi Kev,
I didn't say the adverts were evidence of anything - I was just pointing out how Tesco gloat about "destroying the competition" -which is their TRUE agenda on a larger scale.
I know you are laughing now but you will realise I was right in the coming years, maybe even this next year, alot will come to surface.
Yes, cameron has to be diplomatic -but what is more important? Tesco or our childrens future in, here in Britain?
I don't think you know what globalisation is. :S
0:33 You lost the game.
0:33
Hi "Absinthe Pretty", the 1/2 pence coin disappeared in 1984 when you were aged 3.
Why are some people on here so fucking thick!!!
Back in 1982 wages were a lot lower so these prices were not cheap! also the early 80's were a tough time millions unemployed, people forget how hard times could be back then.
However love to go back to 1982, was only 10 back then, but I was lucky my family were quite well off, but millions were not!
@SteveFusionX I love you corporate conspiracists. Who is this bloke from Cheshunt? I'd love to hear his plan to multiply Tesco by 2400% in 15 years. Also, I'm struggling to understand why this firm would want to enslave its own shareholders...
As for the 'our children's future' argument the UK needs to invest in China, as whether we like it or not, it is growing while we decline relatively in the long run. Tesco does matter in that context. I bet you have pension funds or similar that invest in Tesco. We live in one world, whether we like it or not - and we always have done. I don't think there is any way to avoid the fact that our children will have to work for wages that are equal to those elsewhere, for the first time ever.
tesco prices are great but not as chep as in the video
@Kevo00
This isnt a conspiracy. It's a fact.
Do some research into it.
Search now, online for the information regarding Tescos plans to create entire towns. They are becoming more powerful than government (if not already)
The caption at the end states "Crossed out prices were charged in many Tesco stores INCLUDING STEVENAGE" Why single them out? Did the town have a reputation for ripping people off or something? Was their Tesco sh*t?? Who knows!!!
@DaveyC95 I find your comments offensive how dare you accuse all people who sign on of being scroungers, some of us lost our jobs through redundancy because of the recession. Yes some people are happy to not work and just claim off the state but I am not one of those people because I am in the middle of setting up my own business. Dont tar us with the same brush. I am not common either I have worked hard all my working life and live in a very nice area of the Country.
@SteveFusionX Running an advert saying that you beat other shops on prices is not evidence that you intend to take over the world, I'm sorry. I'm not sure what you expect Cameron to do in China - you have to be diplomatic about these things. Globalisation is such an over-used tag these days, however, yet its nothing new, has always existed, and its better for everyone to specialize in what they are good at. I'd actually argue we are less globalised in 2010 than we were in 1910.
Not sure of the price but they taste awful now, like most of the older brand Chocolate bars they taste cheap and bland.
Tesco is utter shite now.
tesco just sell vomit and shit.
