Amazing seeing inside the restaurant area. I remembered going there in the 80s. You could sit and look out the windows onto the shoppers below while you ate at your table. The panelling opposite the lifts is still the same!
Looks like there is a water leak in the woman’s toilet. There’s water all over the floor. Amazing that the CCTV monitor in the manager’s office is still working and that is is in colour. It looks like a cheap TV from the 90’s. Would make a nice monitor to use with old computers as it show “Pal” video mode😁 in the top left corner. The building has a bit of a late 70’s / early 80’s look to it. The carpark has an interresting mix of in-situ concrete construction and precast TT floor slabs.
Mixed emotions... I hate to see buildings interesting buildings like this abandoned.. but it was WAY COOL to see all of this!! It's absolutely insane how much the place is powered up too!
You should've tried to get the PA system to work, old PEL install, with what looks like Delta Sound ceiling speakers... it probably would've fired up first time.
Hello, I've been thinking, you could use the abandoned store level as the head office for editing your videos, Ben. Also, I've been thinking, we could maybe time travel to the 70's when Tesco first opened, I'm not sure what the comparison between the 70's and today is, but I believe you prefer O&K compared to the Otis mod.
I was a Store detective here back in 2014 months before they announced the closure and before that I was uniform. It always had that 70's theme even the restaurant after these many years. I sat in that restaurant when I was young and all I remember is those 2 pack jaffa cakes at like not even 50p. I still have memories of photos from there the good old times and shoplifters would run from the fire escape with BWS 🤦♂️ Going into the car park to assist the trolley lads because they wouldn't go there on their own because of the drug problem.
Which shop is still open in that building? And if so many floors are closed why they modded the last lift in 2020? For that less floor the 2 otis modded would be enough and they have could switch the last one off.
scary voice that voice just gets in your head , thanks 4 sharing beno , hope your ok in lockdown , surprized you didnt have a magic for the lift motor room lol
@@guyver789 Huge amounts of asbestos meant that even a basic refurb was out of the question. That's why it remained in the 1980s colour scheme - touch one bit and the whole store would need the asbestos clearing
i think the money chute idea is very interesting. did you find the motor that sucks that air? that would be a really interesting big industrial fan than might still work. did you also find out where the cashiers hole for the money chute is? you could put a small action camera there and collect it at the managers office. very interesting shopping centre. next time i want to come here and find out where the vacuum fan thing is for the vacuum pipe.
Pretty much all large supermarkets in the UK use money chutes, including the ASDA store near where I live The chute thing has indicator lights below the slot at the tills, to show when the system is ready And also, some stores only have them on every second till I have also seen a cashier insert a capsule into one
I've noticed those weird chutes at a few Coles and Woolworths supermarkets here in Australia too, but never would've guessed they were used for money or that they used pneumatics.
i think the only problem with having a money chute would be if the money chute's pipe system broke. people could easily put their hand in and get the money.
I seem to remember these lifts opening out into the Tesco store and the doors on the 'car park' side being shuttered off. Do you have any idea as to when this changed?
I now believe that the best kind of abandoned is semi-abandoned. Mainly because you get the perks of it still being in decent condition, and electricity.
I think Go Outdoors occupied store level for a bit of time as I saw a picture of some people in store level when it had just become Go Outdoors. So that's probably why there's adverts in store level or they could just be double sided adverts.
Go outdoors only takes up half of store level. They built a dividing wall in the middle of store level as go outdoors wouldn't fill the whole of the space in the shop. The area where the lifts and old store entrance for tesco is the part that was abandoned.
@@benolifts Also if you didn't already know, sadly Selfridges in Manchester have modded their lifts as well now and the stand clear of the doors please announcement has gone. At least like the M&S lifts, it's another Ecomod and they now pre-door unlike the M&S ones which time waste more than they used to.
Omg.. I remember this shopping centre from the 80s. It was depressing! I moved away from Kent in the early 90s. I thought this place would have been bulldozed for apartments by now!
@@benolifts Yeah, of course, old Tesco must've run out of funds while trying to mod the other two. Was it switched off or left alone to run with the other two?
The cameras are working. The old ones go to the managers office. There are also some new ones, which I don't know if these are linked to off site security, or the shops internal system. There are new PIRs that are linked to off site security.
If all this stuff is abandoned, why don't they cut the power to the abandoned areas and lock them down completely? Like what's the point of leaving all this stuff unlocked and turned on?
Looks like there was originally a McDonald’s, Burger King or KFC location in the restaurant space as they all had yellow plastic boarder signs for their menus above the front counters in the 1970s and 1980s! :)

It won't be, people would call the security cuz he surfed the lift. Besides, he can get arrested for destruction of property yet he just is making it go up and down
Not really worth the hassle. Breaking in and trespassing, especially in such areas as machinery rooms, can mean a hefty fine or even prison time. I'm not saying it wouldn't be fun to see though.

seems weird that otis would mod two lifts and a generic would mod the other, did the generic mod happen before the otis mod?
From asking a similar question I can attest that the generic mod happened after the Otis one.
Timeline of lifts mod

1990s - all three lifts mod by generic
2012 - two lifts mod by otis
2020 - one lift modded by generic
