Amazing seeing inside the restaurant area. I remembered going there in the 80s. You could sit and look out the windows onto the shoppers below while you ate at your table. The panelling opposite the lifts is still the same!
Looks like there is a water leak in the woman’s toilet. There’s water all over the floor. Amazing that the CCTV monitor in the manager’s office is still working and that is is in colour. It looks like a cheap TV from the 90’s. Would make a nice monitor to use with old computers as it show “Pal” video mode😁 in the top left corner. The building has a bit of a late 70’s / early 80’s look to it. The carpark has an interresting mix of in-situ concrete construction and precast TT floor slabs.
I remember the Tesco store opened in 1982.
Tbh that is what Tesco’s toilets look like normally😂😂😂
Really nice metal cased video monitor from the 90s. Yes, great for some retro computing use.
😮😮😮 is that because it opened in 1982 💀💀💀
Apparently, the doors on the abandoned parking floors are now screwed shut from the outside

He said in the video they are abandoned pause 00:20 💀
For abandoned levels there certainly are a lot of lights on
Mixed emotions... I hate to see buildings interesting buildings like this abandoned.. but it was WAY COOL to see all of this!! It's absolutely insane how much the place is powered up too!
Beno finally been waiting years for this
It certainly does look creepy like that. I love that the old CCTV still works.
Still has that 1970s look when I was there in 1979
You should've tried to get the PA system to work, old PEL install, with what looks like Delta Sound ceiling speakers... it probably would've fired up first time.
Yeah, I would have liked to have seen the PA system working. The microphone would have probably been where the customer service would have been.
Need to do this again now go outdoors had closed down!! Do the whole site
Who else is here from Beno's video of Tesco in Chatham a decade ago? :)
More like half a decade
Me
yea that car park is grim, loads of dead junkies found up there, got a spooky vibe up there for real
I used to go in that cafe in tescos all the time as a kid great to see it
everyone: dang it the floor is closed

Good video can not wait for more videos I'm in to the abandoned places myself keep up the good work
Quickest I've clicked on one of your videos!!!!
It's so cool you went back!
Triilan Brings me back to the 1990s lol
mate, this takes me back
Hello, I've been thinking, you could use the abandoned store level as the head office for editing your videos, Ben. Also, I've been thinking, we could maybe time travel to the 70's when Tesco first opened, I'm not sure what the comparison between the 70's and today is, but I believe you prefer O&K compared to the Otis mod.
scary voice that voice just gets in your head , thanks 4 sharing beno , hope your ok in lockdown , surprized you didnt have a magic for the lift motor room lol
sill old beno doing his thing. mint
Which shop is still open in that building?
And if so many floors are closed why they modded the last lift in 2020? For that less floor the 2 otis modded would be enough and they have could switch the last one off.
Wow this guy got special permission to check out these creepy floors, what a madlad
YAY i like the other videos on this!
i like you channel beno lift the one in Chatham i like it
What a throwback
It was great to see the former restaurant level.
you back here!!!!
7:28 They certainly look like a mini version of the back rooms!
?
@@cat1554 Those back rooms look like the backrooms.
@@cat1554 Look up The Backrooms.
Omg.. I remember this shopping centre from the 80s. It was depressing! I moved away from Kent in the early 90s. I thought this place would have been bulldozed for apartments by now!
@@aklifts It was Furse.
Been waiting for this for a while
Is the car park still open? Because I have seen that Go Outdoors is closed so does that mean the car park is shut now too?
It looks like the other store/places closed way before the whole store did
could you do a 24 hour challenge here maybe? :o
Does anyone know what the restaurant looked like?
I seem to remember these lifts opening out into the Tesco store and the doors on the 'car park' side being shuttered off. Do you have any idea as to when this changed?
14:48 imagine if a load of money came on the shoot lol
I now believe that the best kind of abandoned is semi-abandoned. Mainly because you get the perks of it still being in decent condition, and electricity.
I was a Store detective here back in 2014 months before they announced the closure and before that I was uniform. It always had that 70's theme even the restaurant after these many years. I sat in that restaurant when I was young and all I remember is those 2 pack jaffa cakes at like not even 50p. I still have memories of photos from there the good old times and shoplifters would run from the fire escape with BWS 🤦♂️
Going into the car park to assist the trolley lads because they wouldn't go there on their own because of the drug problem.
6:09 Abandoned store level is the basment level because it opens 10cm below the market side
I think Go Outdoors occupied store level for a bit of time as I saw a picture of some people in store level when it had just become Go Outdoors. So that's probably why there's adverts in store level or they could just be double sided adverts.
Go outdoors only takes up half of store level. They built a dividing wall in the middle of store level as go outdoors wouldn't fill the whole of the space in the shop. The area where the lifts and old store entrance for tesco is the part that was abandoned.
Was this from our visit or a new one
14:07 that's the cash office
Early!
Nice vid.
also hi beno
i think the money chute idea is very interesting. did you find the motor that sucks that air? that would be a really interesting big industrial fan than might still work. did you also find out where the cashiers hole for the money chute is? you could put a small action camera there and collect it at the managers office. very interesting shopping centre. next time i want to come here and find out where the vacuum fan thing is for the vacuum pipe.
Pretty much all large supermarkets in the UK use money chutes, including the ASDA store near where I live
The chute thing has indicator lights below the slot at the tills, to show when the system is ready
And also, some stores only have them on every second till
I have also seen a cashier insert a capsule into one
I've noticed those weird chutes at a few Coles and Woolworths supermarkets here in Australia too, but never would've guessed they were used for money or that they used pneumatics.
i think the only problem with having a money chute would be if the money chute's pipe system broke. people could easily put their hand in and get the money.
"Come on you lifts" - Essex 'irons' casuals after one too many!
How weird this lift don stop Store level and Restarunt level ?
14:01 I think I may have figured out how the locking system works
Reply to this comment if you want me to try and explain it
Ok
Yo, is this a UK Regulation ir why are the lifts there always saying if the doors are opening or Closing or going up or down or saying which floor they are on now?
Reminds me of the US Version where it beeps wenn passing a floor...
In Germany the lifts are queit..
I believe it's for visually impaired people
@@ThomasFarquhar2 oh ok
i wish i could go their.
Why is this store closed? It wasn't profitable enough? Are there any alternatives nearby?
It needed total refurbishment and HQ deemed it too costly. There’s an Iceland and Sainsbury’s but Chatham is a dive.
And now Go Outdoors have done the same, think it may be the end for both the store and the car park 😢😢
@@guyver789 Huge amounts of asbestos meant that even a basic refurb was out of the question. That's why it remained in the 1980s colour scheme - touch one bit and the whole store would need the asbestos clearing
Shame they gutted the old inside of tesco
How come you weren't scared at store level? The alarms will alert staff at G.
Alarms?
@@benolifts that was me on another acc, btw was there cameras? Btw you shouldve brought a lantern as the store level was so dark
So which floor was Go Outdoors on, if not store level?
It is store level just partitioned off
Wow... there is nothing in the building again...
Hey ben could you do an uckfield lift tour
There aren't many lifts in uckfield but there are quite a few in the east Sussex national building as I have been in there with my primary school for school event
OTIS 2002 is what i saw on one of the chips
Can you surfing the car park lifts In wigan there 1980s Otis lifts
@@liftsurfer52 Are you a bot bc you have commeted on this video at least 17 times
What was the restaurant?
no
I never knew they had a World Dryer Model A
Or RA, idk
seems weird that otis would mod two lifts and a generic would mod the other, did the generic mod happen before the otis mod?
From asking a similar question I can attest that the generic mod happened after the Otis one.
Timeline of lifts mod
1970s - all three are o&k
1990s - all three lifts mod by generic
2012 - two lifts mod by otis
2020 - one lift modded by generic
@@foxslifts The 1990s only had Dewhurst buttons fitted. The logic and motor was still the same.
I miss this Thanks Bro
I love 14:05 door
revisit this place!
the only way in would be via the lifts, which from what I know are now blocked off so you cannot get to them anymore
Also I remember from the last video about this place that the lifts needed to be called from restaurant level to go there.
What is your outro song?
So one was left unmodernised until recently when it was Lester'd?
Yes
@@benolifts Yeah, of course, old Tesco must've run out of funds while trying to mod the other two. Was it switched off or left alone to run with the other two?
6:28
That shopping basket on the abandoned parking levels is STILL there!
Did you surf up there?
@@benolifts Also if you didn't already know, sadly Selfridges in Manchester have modded their lifts as well now and the stand clear of the doors please announcement has gone. At least like the M&S lifts, it's another Ecomod and they now pre-door unlike the M&S ones which time waste more than they used to.
How would workers get to the motor room?
@@jamesparsons8593 yeah suppose so
they would probably use the stairs and/or ramps and unlock the fencing on them
Hi this video is amazing but aren't the cameras still working?
The cameras are working. The old ones go to the managers office. There are also some new ones, which I don't know if these are linked to off site security, or the shops internal system. There are new PIRs that are linked to off site security.
Yea but nobody monitors ir
Nice Video!
Omg finally you went there
I worked in this store just goes to show nothing is forever
Looks like there was originally a McDonald’s, Burger King or KFC location in the restaurant space as they all had yellow plastic boarder signs for their menus above the front counters in the 1970s and 1980s! :)
As far as I know it was Tesco's own restaurant
@@benolifts
Yeah if that’s the case it was probably set up to resemble other fast food restaurants at the time.
If all this stuff is abandoned, why don't they cut the power to the abandoned areas and lock them down completely? Like what's the point of leaving all this stuff unlocked and turned on?
Hi Beno! Unfortunately Selfridges in Manchester modded their glass Kone lifts. Luckily, they got an Ecomod with pre-doors though.

Is the trafalgar centre still there or has it been knocked down
My video of trafalgar centre will be released very soon
@@benolifts when will it be uploaded
could you please revisit now go outdoors is closed please
I revisit regularly. The location is currently baited.
@@benolifts Oh I see, that's a shame, I'm still fascinated with the 70's style restaurant level, I really like the whole look of it it's so cool.
Why is there abandoned car parks. And a abandoned restaurant. I would think the council had trouble before. Or is the shopping centre being replaced by a new shopping centre. And the old one is due to be demolished or converted into apartments.
Oh
You should learn how to pick locks so you can get into locked motor rooms
Not really worth the hassle. Breaking in and trespassing, especially in such areas as machinery rooms, can mean a hefty fine or even prison time.
I'm not saying it wouldn't be fun to see though.
zangoosiano tv good point
If only TESCO was still open it would be even better
I did like the old Tesco back in the 1990s. Especially the automatic revolving doors that I used to play around which was fun and got told off lol
Even Sainsbury’s supermarkets used to have revolving doors back in those days.
Morrisons ecclesfield has them until 2027 but you can tell from the floor they used to be there
Even Morrisons Norwich used to have revolving doors until they got rid of them.
It won't be, people would call the security cuz he surfed the lift. Besides, he can get arrested for destruction of property yet he just is making it go up and down
Found that really interesting
And I always thought the Tesco in my town was shit...
Tescos abanodend
why do people have their elevators rebuilt by those stupid generic lester companies and not by KONE and OTIS
