I love how Circe is sneaking a knife at the beginning; it's such a better interpretation than i had in my head. When I first heard this song, I thought Circe was just "I can't fight you? Ok, I'll just fuck you to learn if you're trustworthy. That totally makes sense." This take, that Circe was using seduction as a test and trap, is so much better. When Odysseus turns her down because he's married, Circe sees that Odysseus is a decent man and not a threat to her nymphs, so she drops the knife and agrees to help him.

I think so much about kindness vs ruthlessness in epic, I’ll never get over how this song and the verse about kindness is the last thing that happens before ody heads to the underworld and becomes the monster he needs to be to get home. Like. He wouldn’t have gotten to the underworld without kindness and vulnerability, and even leaves Circe with a new perspective on what it means to be kind. But without becoming ruthless, ody never would have made it home. You can’t be kind in war (even tho the war’s over technically this is still a war against the elements/the gods) because all that does is leave yourself open to a counterattack.
Yet, Odysseus inspires Circe to be kinder. Circe’s history with men killing her nymphs made her completely cold; Odysseus warmed her back up just enough. She’s not naive enough to let her nymphs be hurt, but open to the idea that some people do have good intentions. It’s almost like Odysseus knew what he had to do subconsciously, and wanted to impart Polite’s message of kindness with someone else before needing to destroy it from himself entirely.
Sorry for the wall of text I’ve been thinking abt this so much lol

I can't agree more! I also think it has a lot of parallels with the Calypso arc (needing divine intervention, attempted seduction by a powerful supernatural woman, Hermes providing encouragement) where it shows that while Odysseus needs to be ruthless to get home, he still has his human core left because a ruthless man would've failed or given up (fallen for Circe's honey trap, just accepted living in paradise with Calypso, plus Hera only letting him go for his Fidelity). The only way for him to get home is to show mercy, both in ruthlessness and truth.

In ruthlessness, there's kindness and in kindness there's ruthlessness. It's important to show one or the other when the situation demands it. Greet the world with open arms but be ruthless when they dare choose not to spare.
The entire situation with the cyclops could have been avoided if they met before they killed a sheep. After that, he should have shown ruthlessness. I think Epic makes it really clear that there isn't a clear cut line and you should choose depending on the situation

Without the ability to kill mercilessly he never would make it past all those suitors. Without the lessons he learned--"he's aiming for the torches"--they'd have eaten him alive. But at the same time without Athena's sacrifice in the name of the one thing she said she wasn't looking for--friendship--he'd have been stuck with Calypso forever.

having heard the vengeance saga the message seems to be kind of the opposite, in that ruthlessness begets only more ruthlessness. Poseidon refuses to show mercy and in the end it comes back to bite him. It doesnt end up being mercy upon himself. It was the same in the case of mutiny. Odysseus showed the same ruthlessness in sacrificing his men, the epitomy of ruthlessness not being mercy upon ourselves and he ended up entirely losing the trust of his crew. Plus in this actual odyssey, Odysseus killing the infant is why he is being punished by being unable to return home in the first place. Like all the Greeks, he was punished for his crimes in the taking of troy
Its about the cyclical nature of violence. Poseidon killed Odysseus crew and now he gets tortured. Odysseus sacrificed his men so now he gets betrayed etc etc. This is the sense in which the message is the opposite. You NEED to show kindness, because if you show only ruthlessness that's the only thing youll get back.
That's why in six hundred strike Poseidon doesn't allow Odysseus to finish the line about ruthlessness being mercy, its an admition that its not. That's why Odysseus says LOOK WHAT YOUVE TURNED US INTO, LOOK AT WHAT WEVE BECOME. Its basically commentary on Poseidon's ideology about ruthlessness. What has it wrought? One murderous psychopath torturing another? Did Poseidon's actions restore his sons sight? Did they not end up with him cowering with a trident stuck in him? Did Odysseus actions save his men? Keep their trust? End up with him having a clean conscience?
In a very real way the circe saga showcase what happens when things dont work that way. Odysseus could have marshalled his troops and razed Circe's palace, he could have killed her. Circe could have killed or refused to tturn Odysseus men back. She could have killed him in a moment of weakness. After all going by your logic this is no less war if battling the elements is war. But Odysseus simply asks and refuses to kill Circe and she in turn him, and the interaction ends with no one harmed. This is what mercy brings, everyone coming out ok. Ruthlessness here would have resulted in ppl dying for no reason and needless enmity, like every other time
Tldr : The whole saga is about how ruthlessness fundamentally doesn't work, and every time someone deploys violence it comes back to bite them, and the only time when bad things doesn't happen, like in the Circe saga, its when ppl are kind and merciful. The saga itself starts with a monstrous act in killing the infant which essentially curses Odysseus to be punished (though both here and in the Odyssey the sins of odysseus are many and his pride is his most notable bugbear)

    BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE
I LOVEE how this one shows exactly how much power Circe actually has, most show a more subtle mind-game, but this one shows her power physically, with her dominating the entire interaction, being taller, shoving Odysseus around, and causing him mental distress all wrapped in a seductive package before going in for the kill. She was literally trying to court him with death, using herself as bait and I love that.
I also love how it shows that the only thing that stays her hand and her blade is his loyalty and love for Penelope. She almost seems annoyed that she can’t kill him now, because she’s been in the same situation before, and expected Odysseus to choose the other woman just like Glaucus, but he remains loyal instead. Killing him would be like killing the part of herself that still loves and longs for what Odysseus and Penelope have, so she couldn’t even if she is cynical to a happy ending.
AND amazing usage of film techniques and camera angles, like the ARC SHOT (my fave) the DOLLY SHOTS the TILTING, the TRACKING, the PANNING THE LOW ANGLE POV SHOT OF CIRCE THEN PENELOPE?!!?
    10/10 amazing as always, Gigi!

Whereas in Scylla, when Odysseus does exactly that, makes a sacrifice of six men so that the other 37 could live, Eurylochus loses his fuckin mind over it.

    • @I_will_have_an_emu_army
      @I_will_have_an_emu_army 5 місяців тому +41

@@Yaeza31 I see both him AND Odysseus as hypocrites in that moment.
Eurylochus because, yes, he was the one who had wanted to leave his recon team behind back on Circe's Island. Odysseus because he was the one who had talked of not leaving comrades behind no matter the risks involved, only to do so when faced with Scylla.
Of course, Odysseus had his reasons. It was either giving up six lives of his crew to Scylla, or run the chance of losing the entirety of his crew to Charybdis. Between those two options, who could really fault him for the decision he made?
However, the circumstances between Circe's Island and the Lair of Scylla differ.
Back on Circe's Island, Eurylochus had no clue he was leading his team into what would be a trap. They had no clue there was a witch inhabiting the land. It was foreign territory. And when it happened, and Eurylochus rushed back to explain the matters, he was outwardly against going back for the men who he had deemed a loss cause.
To him, it was a sucide mission. They had already lost so much after their encounter with Poisideon, it's reasonable to not want to lose more.
But, Odysseus proves him wrong. He goes and bargains the release of the pig-turned crew members, likely much to Eurylochus' surprise.
Maybe it's in that moment that Eurylochus realizes that Odysseus really would do just about anything to ensure the safety of his crew, and the lives of his men. So maybe that's why it comes as such a horrible shock to Eurylochus when he dechipers that Odysseus had been planning to sacrifce six of them.
Because the Odysseus he knew never would have never gone through with such a morbid thing. The Odysseus he knew would have found another way.
It's also important to note that with Eurylochus, the whole incidnet with his recon team was an accident and no one could have foretold what would happen. And though Eurylochus wanting to leave the men behind may not have been the most moral choice, considering his panic and fearing for the worse, it was justified.
But with Odysseus, it was pre-planned. Premeditated murder, if you think about it. Which, I believe, makes the slightest of differences. He knew six lives were going to be lost, and he willfully continued on. However, considering how he had little to no other choices to contend with, his final decision, though gruesome and unfortunate, was also justified.
Both of these characters have made or have wanted to make unethical choices. Both have been through their fair share of trauma and tiring events. Both situations sucked, to be honest, but I can understand the perspectives of Eurylochus and Odysseus. If only things could have turned out for the better for all them.
