    I'm really bummed this is the last regularly scheduled briefing. I watch these every time they are released on this youtube channel, they are VERY informative. Consider weekly briefings from here going forward if you can, even though things have stabilized a bit, it is still solid info for folks around the world (especially locals in Puna) to have.

    These conference calls have been a wonderful service. My guess is they had to stop them before experts started hurling themselves headlong into the lava flow to avoid the endless stupid questions of Nina Wu.

    Who was the disrespectful Brit that asked lame questions and then acted irritated that no one could answer?! OMG ... dude, stick your head in a flow and then define the hazard for your audience, how ever small that may be. LOL! And nice job USGS!

      Sandy Roo -- Feeling so sorry to read you lost your house. But indeed, even for me living thousands of miles away this conference video's are very interesting to see/hear what is happening on the most active volcano on earth. And sources as this are of great importance to you and the rest of the world. Please USGS /HVO don't stop!

    USGS ought to shut out the dingbat with the high pitched voice-make her submit her questions in writing (so maybe she’ll sort out her thoughts and order them logically!) and respond to them in writing (so you'll have a record of it and she can't screw it up and report misinformation!).

      How she sounds in that sense doesn’t bother me; it’s the lack of organized thought or forethought she displays when formulating her questions that is annoying. I suspect she has valid questions, but she's poor at articulating them, which is why the responder obviously feel such frustration in trying to answer.
      Even more annoying is the Reuters reporter with his mean-spirited (given his accusation of a contradiction between the 7/15 report's citing worse-case scenarios and the low probability of them happening) attempt to pin scientists down with a concrete prediction about hazards. The final response, though was perfect; and his “non-hazard hazard” comment was just petulant.

    They have to be so sick of these same idiots asking the same questions over and over and over. And at this point I'm expecting Nina Wu to ask, "Um... hi! So I was wondering... I read reports that the lava is hot? Can you confirm this?" She's asked every dumb question possible by this point, why not go all the way!

      From the hint of exasperation in the voice of the woman who chimed in to say that the volume from the fissure and the volume at the summit are two different things, it appears that they are losing their patience with it. I suspect there was a conference between the experts and the point was presented to stop the scheduled pressers because of the redundancy of the questioning combined with the activity consistency. They need to be moving on to doing other things. They certainly have the patience of Job and I really commend them for it.

    • @shirazenema3228

      Or one could say that we are sick of the same idiot answers , what is the point of the UGS exactly always the same answer " were not sure whats happening" . Wish i could have a fake job!

    • @K1lostream
      @K1lostream 6 років тому +8

      Shirazenema - A fake job would be saying 'God did it" and then claiming to know what it was punishment for, and what we should now think, say and do as a result - you want to find a freeloader leeching a living off people with proper jobs? Then head to your local church.
      Volcanology is a real job, it's just that due to the time scales on which volcanoes operate, we get the broad brush picture of how they operate, it's rare that volcanoes actually erupt for live study as it were, and on the occasions that they do, other hazards share in the priorities - you should not be surprised to get lots of "we don't know" answers whilst an event is ongoing - we"be never been able to study a live event with modern instruments before. But one thing is for sure - the next time this happens, there will be more and better answers available thanks to the work these volcanologists are doing today. The church man will still be saying 'God did it' as he was taught, and his teacher was taught before him.

    I have some questions like to the USGS; When might we be able to see updated radar images of the crater collapse patterns at the summit?
    This one is for NOAA; Is anyone taking measures of underwater locations for changes in the bottom topography in areas near the delta, Hilo bay, and the Loihi volcano mount?

    It’s funny....As a layperson, I read, watch and study all kinds of things related to this eruption. I am fascinated by it.
    What I have some problem with, however, are ill-informed questions. Reporters need to keep up with recent information. Also, I think, people want definite answers about a phenomenon which is very difficult to predict. I know the USGS people don’t want to have to say, “I don’t know” but that is often the case for this event.

    Nice q & a. I figure the gas contains the largest power component in the form of quantity and in surge properties.
    The map of below where the garden hose has found its way out, first, I would suppose would always be by gas, and relative volumes of gas would be more informative than fluid, the latter still being payload at ground level.

  • @MorellioBenoir

    I would assume the biggest risk for partial or full collapse of fissure 8 would be due to the reduction in flow of lava from it. All that flowing lava supports the sides. Just like the Kiluea crater itself, if there is no lava to support the rock it collapses. Biggest danger would be a reduction in flow, a partial collapse at 8, and an event that increased flow enough to send significant amounts of lava in a new direction.

  • @wbwarren57

    Question: Does the USGS have any estimate of the maximum size the crater could grow to? Obviously it’s unlikely that it will swallow the entire island of Hawaii but it seems like t bigger. Is there any projected maxim that it could reach?

    The 6:41 am collapse video shows what appears to be a wave of vapor that increases then decreases just as the land drops underneath. Is this caused by a brief, local pressure drop (below the locsl vapor pressure) due to the land dropping away? I was trying to think of what was causing this and could only think of my possible explaination.

    I also think it is amazing how educated speculation is such taboo. It is ok to make an educated guess about what might happen IF you properly qualify it. Just be clear that “this might happen” and WHY. It is much more interesting to hear what the geologist think than to have them hold back for what ... legal reasons? Say it. We like you guys and respect your opinion.

    • @roamingchemist2514
      @roamingchemist2514 6 років тому +1

      The USGS folks are scientists; as a scientist myself, I can tell you that we are trained to almost never make definitive statements, because the next experiment or observation could prove that completely wrong. As Janet Babb has said, this present eruption is unprecedented, meaning there is little hard data from past observations on which to base new hypotheses. Hawai'ian volcanoes are shield volcanoes, which makes them different from the stratovolcanoes along the "ring of fire". You can't apply observations of their behavior to Hawai'i.
      So it is a guessing game now, but scientists are loath to make educated guesses. Mainly this is because the non-scientist public can't understand the difference between a statement supported by hard facts and one which is a yet to be proven hypothesis. Each day that goes by, there is more evidence to support one hypothesis or refute another, but it is still very much an experiment in progress. The public also has a very poor understanding of probability, so scientists get burned every time they put forth a hypothesis that the public interprets as fact or they make a statement of risk which the public understands as a certainty.
      The Reuters guy is a perfect illustration - the USGS breakout map from July 15th is an attempt by the USGS to forewarn the public of the areas that could potentially suffer damage were large breakouts to occur in three segments of the current flow. The Reuters guy completely misunderstood this to be a prediction of what would happen, and got annoyed when the USGS wouldn't tell him when so he could have his camera ready.

      The Stimpy it's not stopping. Kilauea is still very much active. Pu'u O'o spent 35 years (so far) oozing lava into the ocean. It remains to be seen how much lava is in the magma reseviors. The outlet for the current lava use to be Pu'u O'o, but when that drained it is believed that the conduit collapsed which sent magma down the LERZ and had to come out somewhere. Pu'u O'o use to drain out to the ocean via a set of 2 main conduits to the South, but it is believed that earthquakes may have collapsed them. The magma filled Halema'u ma'u until it too collapsed and here we are....this very well COULD go on for.........? That is the big question.

  • @RogerWKnight
    @RogerWKnight 6 років тому +2

    This may not be popular with some commentators but I think Squeaky Voice Nina is asking some pretty good questions. She gets that there are 100 cubic meters per second of flow out of Fissure 8 feeding the Lava River. She gets that the volume of the magma chamber at Hale Ma'u Ma'u is of a FINITE, not infinite, size, and therefore will eventually run out. So she is thinking that if we can get an estimate of the volume of the magma chamber, we can mathematically estimate the amount of time this will continue to flow.The problem is that the geologists are being evasive and apparently not wanting to answer this very important question. Farmers are accustomed to crunching numbers: how many acres, how many pounds of seed, how many cubic feet of steer manure and so on. Just because you don't know the precise values of a, b, and c, does not stop a farmer, or an engineer with a boss who is demanding ANSWERS, from making his best guesses at those values to come up with x. So no doubt those farmers and homeowners are FURIOUS with the geologists for putting apparently maximum effort into estimating the size of the magma chamber and therefore the amount time we have left on this eruption!It is not their fault that the one reporter asking this important question has a squeaky voice that irritates people who seem to believe that "I don't know" is an adequate answer. Not if you own a few acres of farmland that happens to have a liquid lava river on one side and frozen lava rivers on the other side with a boat ramp that is getting closer to no longer existing. You would be thinking that if the USGS cannot come up with an estimate of the total volume of the magma chamber and therefore how much longer this is going to last, then what are we paying them for?

    • @fredivory4304
      @fredivory4304 6 років тому

      RogerWKnight You put WAY too much stock in scientists. The REAL answer to 99.9% of the questions is we don't know. The rest is people with a piece of paper on the wall telling them they are smart making things up.

    What Im getting here is the USGS ppl are not paying enough attention to the questions,, poor comprehension.
    These seem like geologist flown-in to gain some hands on volcano experience, but they’re falling a little short on consciousness.
    @ 7:00 is it so hard to understand “summit collapse” as in- If fissure 8 were to collapse (as PU’Oo’ did) the caller was wondering if the magma would find another outlet. Sure a cone collapse would just blow cone material downstream, but caller himself is confused about what exactly a (cone, fissure) collapse is, he does know PUu’ O’o ‘collapsed’, and look what happened. Need more depth of comprehension on the part of these USGS ppl fielding calls.
    Nina Woo @ 11:46 - So, how many times have we heard this question? The USGS ppl you’d think would come to these conference calls armed with that specific answer ea time, they should all have this data ‘daily’. If volume is the million dollar question (and it really is), get with it.
    @14:20 there you go, another standard ‘volume’ question, only Janet knows.
    @16:18 Reuters reporter should’ve been corrected right away. The 7/15 report he’s trying to sensationalize ‘did not’ say it was “most likely” the activity is going to continue for months/years. Fail by USGS to jump on this evil.
    Mainstream media is ‘always’ looking to sensationalize news stories, that’s where this reporter’s mind is at, and how most network reporters brains are wired. This is a perfect example of the term ‘Fake News’.
    The ladies seem all surprised someone would ask a giant hypothetical, the question gets handed off to Rick, who obviously wasn’t paying attention either, and/or also lacks sufficient comprehension skills. Janet figures it out too late.
    It’s clear to anyone who cares to look at maps/photos of the PUU’ Oo’ event that if the current event continues, F8 will produce 360 degree coverage, as the longer it goes, the higher probability of cone collapse and lava flow diversion, its what volcanos do, its how they roll, how they cover ground and build an island.

      Richard Goldman- As usual, you’re an idiot. Pu’u’o’o cone didn’t collapse the floor collapsed, the cone is still there. The geologists commenting on these mostly moronic questions have been at HVO for years and in Janet Babbs case, decades. These people are asking mostly hypothetical questions, how do you expect them to answer a hypothetical question? If they gave a definitive answer to a hypothetical question, you and other fools like you would piss and moan about how they were wrong. If you don’t live here and this doesn’t affect you directly then shut the fuck up Jewboy.

      I think they feel the need to throw in some homegrown Hawaiian talent. Unfortunately, she has no talent, a palpable lack of intelligence and she sounds like a brake pad burned down to its steel studs while squeaking and destroying its rotor.
      They HAVE homegrown talent, I just don't know why they have to roll her out sometimes because she makes her homegrown people sound dumb and I know they're not.
      I shouldn't feel anger...screw that...RAGE...towards a chick on a conference call. They do a pretty good job at getting USGS (okay, lets call them nerds because they're most definitely scientifically inclined, NOT socially) people to get everyone the answers they want even though there's a good amount of their data that is available if you just click some links but whatever, "official sources said" is what it is.
      Even though I've heard some USGS people who obviously are much better at sitting in front of scientific equipment than speaking to media, there is not a single one of them who I have serious desires to punch in the throat like her (to get her to shut her up, not kill although I wonder what she does other than create co2 from her lungs and stealing o2 from the world and chew bubblegum when it's safe for her to do so.).
