- This unique and quite unusual attraction is Journey to Atlantis at SeaWorld Orlando. In its current age, SeaWorld is trying to carve itself out as a coaster park nestled neatly between Disney and Universal right off of I-4. Atlantis however, is a strange relic from a different time. It’s an often underrated and overlooked attraction, and today, I’m going to be telling its story and seeing what makes SeaWorld’s first attempt in the dark ride market so compelling.

Journey To Atlantis both freaked me out and intrigued me as a kid

I was absolutely terrified of the mermaid-gorgon creature. The dark ride portions and all the fake-outs frightened me more than the giant Kraken coaster next door
When I rode this as a kid, it scared me so bad. That big medusa right before the drop freaked me out way more than it should have.

I really like the ride though its been a few years since I've been to SeaWorld. Honestly I kind of wished they would continue with it, cover up some of the exposed non-themed areas and make the park more atlantis themed overall. It definitely is going for the coaster route so I assume its gonna be a bit more generic but the atlantis theme was one of my favorites. Given in terms of theme alone my favorite area is Port of Entry at Islands of Adventure... Probably all the Sinbad I remember as a kid.
lol the rusty rooftop views are definitely the highlight of this ride. That was definitely an oversight.
The iteration I recall vividly had the one and only Christopher Lloyd in it sending you along the journey to rediscover the lost world of Atlantic by following a seahorse who knew the way. It was and has always been epic to me and anyone I've ridden it with.... Especially those who aren't aware of the hidden aspects!
The fisherman's actor was Christopher Lloyd? I had no idea, I did see the fisherman scene once back in 2016 or 2017, (although the window shutter closed on him while he was talking)

This is such a great underrated dark ride! I haven’t been on it since blackfish came out so once seaworld gets rid of the orcas and dolphins I’ll definitely head back to ride this amazing attraction!

I mean you’ll have to wait for a while since they’re current generation of orcas is still quite young. They’ve worked in recent years to improve quality of life for their orcas and ended captive breeding and realistically I don’t see them ever phasing out dolphin shows or up-close encounters because they’d lose so much money.
@@gregoryjames1542 yeah regardless of blackfish and all the coasters the marine life is still sea worlds biggest appeal and dolphins and orcas are a part of that
I love this ride! It just checks so many boxes for me. I'm a sucker for any water themed dark rides., always find them spooky in a fun way.
This is the first attraction I ever rode. My mom didn’t realize that there was a giant monster before the drop. I was traumatized and had nightmares for months about that face.
Oh! And fun fact! In the JTA aquarium, if you look carefully towards the back of the eel pool there’s a projection of a tiny mermaid swimming far away in the background
The San Diego one was amazing with a elevator lift that takes you up. I wish it had more Atlantis ride through but the way you go up the elevator and it opens with a track that looks to go nowhere and you are at the top of the building absolutely was amazing to me as a kid.
I only rode it for the first time in September of this year, but Atlantis is a really special ride for my mom and I and I would really hate to see it go. It gives you the full themed package without having to actually go to Disney or Universal, and that jam they play when you bust out the doors for the first time is a 100% certified genuine bop 🙌
I rode the Journey to Atlantis San Diego version as a kid; it wasn't really a dark ride (as I recall, there was only a very short dark segment in an elevator) and the main story was told via audio recording. Mostly it was a chance to cool down in the summer. They had an urn above the main lift hill that would tip over and dump water on the riders.
Yessss I remember riding this! It absolutely terrified me, because I thought the big drop was the end...but how wrong I was. I'd love to go back and ride it again.
I loved this as a kid. I was disappointed after hearing the story was removed and the special effects was turned off. Another "scary" ride that I enjoyed that was like Journey to Atlantis is Revenge of the Mummy in USF. If you think about it, both attractions have similar story telling and have elements of surprises hidden away from first time riders, and when you thought it was over, they have one last trick to show the riders before sending them to the gift shop.
I loved the theming in Journey to Atlantis but the story and special effects is what I remembered the most as a kid. Is it still a fun ride to go on? Sure, the drops are fun and it does feel like you're in Atlantis, but it's clear that this watercoaster is on it's last legs and will most likely see a replacement if SeaWorld gets the opportunity to do so.
Revenge of the Mummy has been able to come close to what Journey to Atlantis had to offer, but I am sad that people who never went on it before 2017 will be able to experience what I have when I was young. It's up there as one of the most underrated attractions along with Alien Encounter. But of course that is my opinion, still a nice looking ride, but it has lost it's charm IMO.
I agree with your comparison, even though I wouldn't have initially thought to compare the two.
I do disagree a bit with the story aspect though. I didn't feel that it was conveyed well enough for general audiences to understand what was going on and so the ride's strength is still in its theming and atmosphere. While I definitely would like the story back, I don't feel that the attraction really suffers too much from losing it.
Also, I fully agree with Alien Encounter. I've only been on it once, but that was quite the experience.
@@PoseidonEntertainment That's fine, I do acknowledge that the story was hard to follow since usually people miss the story from the queue about the fisherman warning them not to go looking for Atlantis, hence why Hermes was brought in since we ignored the warning and the fisherman sent Hermes to protect us. If they had done a better job than I felt it would of gotten a better reception, but that was why the attraction was overlooked since the story wasn't understood.
Everything else about it is good as you've said, too bad SeaWorld aren't so good with creating dark rides with a storyline that is at least decent. It's nice they're focusing on roller coasters more, but I do think they will be in debt as a result because Covid has put the company in a rough state.
@@RvBnerd618 Maybe, but at least they can premier Ice Breaker as something to draw people in. I also believe that there's already been a track delivery for whatever the secret "Surf Coaster" project is that's supposed to be coming.

I live in Orlando so I frequent all the parks. Been to SeaWorld earlier this year, enjoyed this ride a lot more than I remembered. It was quite thrilling and had a 2 minute wait time. Definitely a lot of fun especially hopping right on!
As someone who used to work there, we all know she struggling. We only had one working Hermes animatronic and we loved him. For a ride that needs a lot of love, it was one of my favorite places to work.
When I was 3, I went on this ride and it absolutely traumatized me. I went back on it 15 years later and found $150 on the ground on the way out. One of the greatest rides of all time.
I always preferred dark ride log flumes over coasters; it's like 2 rides in one and it doesn't go by in a 60 second blur lol
Sea World Journey to Atlantis: the ride that never ends, the journey which last your whole life and shows you things you couldn't even believe. We will never leave this ride, and we wouldn't want to look away from this breathtaking sights even if we could
Atlantis needs some love :( it’s an iconic part of the park with just the facade alone. It’s unique with its flume and coaster elements that have great plot twists and surprises for guests. It seriously needs the story elements back though, even in their original state as the old cgi can play into the unsettling nature. It’s a fascinating attraction that I feel has carved out a place in lots of guests memories, especially if they were younger for its mystery and oddity.
I heard part of why the effects were turned off was to tie in with the VR story Kraken used to have as it ended with the sub surfacing with the Atlantis facade in the distance but I’m not sure why Atlantis’s story needed to be scrubbed for Kraken’s, and as it stands, neither exist anymore anyway.
This was my favorite ride at SeaWorld San Diego when I was a kid. I never knew there was a better version in Orlando. Might have to check this one out some time
It's certainly an interesting juxtaposition. I wouldn't even necessarily consider them "versions" of each other because of how different they all are.
The Orlando version is definitely better in themimg, but the San Diego version is the superior coaster.
Man i remember being terrified of this ride and crying the whole time lol, but my mom loved it so she kept making me go on it and eventually it became one of my favorite rides
I rode it when it was brand new, i remember alot of fog and mist surrounding the outside and inside areas. the Allura statue actually lept out at you before going static, in later refurbishements, from what I read. There was a Waterfall after the boat went out side and everyone ducked , it stopped before entering the lift hill, I think it was pitch black in that room, and the lamp shook , trying to kill us. Thee Drop made my stomach stand up XD. the second dark ride portion had Allura comeback on one of the ship masts before you exited the area and she made a weird growling sound. It tramuatized me for awhile, but since liking liking scary stuff, I've appericated it more. I was wondering if the ride commerical was on the internet anywhere, it had swirly effects and cheesy narration
I do seem to remember effects like this, especially the waterfall tease on that last lift.

Ah, quite the underrated attraction as well. I definitely will keep it on the backburner for another video topic. I can't think of much to say about it that hasn't already been said, but I can probably tie it into a larger topic.

This video made me so happy! I’ve watched a lot of your videos and tend to agree with your opinions on what makes a great attraction. I had a SeaWorld annual pass for an entire year just to attend the concerts. My husband and I always skipped this one because we figured it was just a dumb, unthemed ride to get you soaked, which is exactly what you’d expect from a park with rides that mostly appeal to teens. Anyway, after we went on it, we knew better, and now it’s one of our favorite rides ever! Such a gem, and I wish sea world would do more like it!

I love this ride!! It has that classic Disney dark ride feel, with the excitement of a small coaster and good drop. It’s an awesome mix.

I rode this ride as a kid and it always stuck with me because of how scary but interesting it was. Thank you for making this video and allowing me to put a name to a really memorable ride!
This is a similar attraction to Escape From Pompeii in Busch Gardens Williamsburg, except it seems to last a bit longer. In both cases, each ride's facade look very detailed and impressive. Pompeii has some nice uses of fire elements and a decent level of theming inside. It's actually probably closer to the Jurassic park river adventure. On a recent trip to BGW in May 2021 I realized after my first day how that park lacked any real dark ride as at that time Pompeii was still closed because of staffing and obviously Curse of Darkastle was basically given up on a few years prior. I too like the direction of coasters at many of the SeaWorld related parks, and if they're not going to move forward with any dark rides then they should put a little extra money into more theming for these coasters they're opening 2022 and beyond.

I haven't been to Williamsburg in a long time, but I really want to like Busch Gardens Tampa and SeaWorld Orlando. They're just so poorly mismanaged though and the pandemic has made the problems far worse. If they could actually get competent leadership into place and found investors with a real desire to fix the parks, I would more than welcome it. I get the impression that Williamsburg is probably the most well kept of the parks, so perhaps the problems aren't as apparent there.

I found your channel with the princess and the frog video, as I think most everybody else did, and to see you hit such a big jump from that video to this in subscribers is great to see.
In other news, I think sea world is trying to transfer the persona of being a coaster park over here on the west coast with the building of emperor. I actually just went last week and I can’t wait for the parks to reopen to able to experience that new ride for myself.
Anyways you’re killing it man and I can’t wait to see what content is coming down the pipeline.
Just a suggestion, I think a deep dive of the tiki room would be fun or of the movie studios having to move over to Hollywood in the early days of film because of Thomas Edison

I do agree, and I think it's the right direction for SeaWorld to take. I haven't been to any of the other SeaWorld branded parks outside of the Orlando one, but I'm definitely interested in visiting them when I can. Emperor looks to be a pretty decent dive.

I was always too scared to ride it as a kid but I LOVED the little aquarium portion, how themed and cool it was. My favorite was the eel tank and how there was a mermaid in the back that was always coming closer but never reached you (it fascinated and terrified me) as I grow older theming is my #1 thing, that’s why I loved Poseidon’s fury so much no matter how cheesy it was… hopefully this doesn’t go too as it’s so rich and really captures you in a world.
When I first rode Journey to Atlantis I had no idea about the coaster part. So that made it super exciting for me. Imagine my surprise. Especially after the calming dark ride experience. I really enjoy the ride and I hope they keep it for a long time.
I like it. I find it a classic that I have to ride every time. Plus, it cools you off during the summer and frankly any time in Florida

I am very familiar with JTA as this is in my home park. I personally really enjoy JTA and make it a point to ride it at least once every visit. It was definitely disappointing that they removed all the elements that terrified me as a child, but, I still have a lot of respect for this dark ride! I do believe that they should at least add some type of voiceovers to tell a story. Even if it means that there are no special effects.

It isn't even fun to me anymore in it's dead state rn; losing all the special effects and story and just leaving it as a boat ride with a drop really killed it imo

Killin it with the intros! You should do a video on the mummy at universal. To me it is very unique in that it is a coaster and dark ride and I can’t think of many rides like it.
Yeah I agree, I think it would be a good idea. It was the next evolution for indoor coasters after Space Mountain, so I can think of ways to make it an interesting video topic.
When I rode it with the effects working - my favourite bit was after the first drop when a voice goes "leaving so soon? I think NOT!" and then your boat gets turned around going back towards Atlantis for the second drop. Was gutted when that disappeared.
I love Journey to Atlantis! SWO is my homepark so I'm there often. It's a very unique ride and I'm okay with the way it runs present day. I look for fun and thrills and this ride still delivers. I'll be sad if it's removed one day. The penguin ride closed with the pandemic and it looks like SWO will permanently keep,it closed. It will remain open for the walk thru penguin exhibit only. USA Today voted SWO as best Amusement park recently and Sea World has been the only park of the big three in Orlando to have had increased attendance overall. They said it's because Sea World has been offering better discounts and values overall. Blackfish didn't have any effect on me because most of it was false or misinformation. Unfortunately too many people took it as all true. Yes, there were some truths, but Sea World does a great job with animal rehabilitation. They have recued and rehabilitated 40000 animals this year alone. So people need to get over things and just enjoy the park. They have an elite coaster collection and will just continue to get better over the years.
i need to mention: as a kid i was at seaworld for our USA mini trip, and i saw the word atlantis, from that moment i wanted to go in, but i slowly started to see how it was a rollercoaster, how scary it could be, my dad kept encouraging me.
I was 9 and still have some stress in my body from then, never again!
I loved this ride when I went on it as a kid; I had no idea there was going to be a second drop and so it really scared and thrilled me. Also, I rode it at nighttime, which definitely added to the creepy vibe/theming during the outdoor portions.

I just barely remember this ride and I remember really enjoying it a ton, enough to get right back in line when I got off. Hoping to go back to Sea World at some point to ride it again
I'm surprised it's still around considering their pivot to large coasters, but I'll take it while it's still here.
Great tribute to a wonderful ride. I don't remember what year I first experienced it, but it was a long time ago. We had no idea what to expect, didn't even know it had a dark ride element, which made the whole thing even greater. There was almost no line for it, so if the story is set up in the queue, I missed it. The audio in the ride was difficult to understand, so we did not get the plot at all. It just seemed to be a psychadelic bunch of awesomeness. Why is that lady so pissed at us? Don't know, and don't care! Bring it on! The bizarre Betelgeuse music was the cherry on top, we were all just laughing our butts off a the sheer surrealness of it all. The coaster tracks blindsided us as well. Of COURSE this flume ride would suddenly change to coaster tracks! At this point nothing would surprise us. I hope Seaworld will always keep this ride around, as it is unique and beautiful, and feels more like the Imagination pavilion at EPCOT than the current Imagination ride. I love that it exists.
Agreed, I don't think that the attraction ever told its story effectively, which really didn't make it too much of a loss when it was removed. I think you described it perfectly as being "surreal". It's atmosphere it was makes it great, and while it's a maintenance nightmare, I do hope it stays for a long time. Even if it eventually comes to pass that the coaster needs to go, I would like the building turned into a larger aquarium or a walkthrough exhibit because the façade is just so enticing.

It was a solid attempt 👌 at a good water flume / dark ride with theming and a storyline for SeaWorld. The idea is great. Water voyage (and also a roller coaster!!!,) Greek fishing village, Atlantis resurfacing from the depths, scary scenes with intense lighting effects. Perhaps an enhanced version of this can be done much in the style of Shanghai Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean with the huge wrap around projections.
I'm not sure that SeaWorld would be committed to a budget for something like that, but I also don't think that additional story is needed. The atmosphere of the set dressing is what makes it so alluring to me and while I like this attraction for what it is, I also do like the direction they're taking in distinguishing themselves as a coaster park to fill a different niche in the Orlando market.
Well yah you're right about SeaWorld's niche. I didn't necessarily mean for any future version or "knock off" to be executed by SeaWorld. I would just like to see a great attraction having to do with Atlantis lore done at the cutting edge Disney level of theming and immersiveness. Anything having to do with supernatural undersea voyages, sea monsters, sea gods ;D Atlantis lore, and Greek inspired oceanic mythology would make for a fantastic attraction. I know you like the facade of this ride but it seems to me that the fancy exterior actually houses much of the ride itself. I guess Disney and Universal are better at maintaining rides housed in complex show buildings. With Disney/Universal though, a facade is mostly fake and uses forced perspective while most of the ride is housed in a hidden warehouse-like building. This helps with the maintenance costs.
@@lawrencepatricksingson8831 I completely agree with a really ambitious Atlantis themed attraction. Poseidon's Fury, for all of its flaws and camp, has come the closest that we'll see I suspect. But a truly immersive and high budget Atlantis attraction? I'm definitely on board. Seems perfect for Tokyo Disney Sea.
I didn't realize they shut off the theming. That's awful to hear! I enjoyed it when I went years ago and they were running it the way it was designed. Theming as way ahead of Ripsaw Falls at Universal and when I last road it it was a lot smoother ride. I will never get back on Ripsaw Falls again as it gave me several nasty bumps when I rode it.

the San Diego one is not the smaller of the two the San Diego is taller and more thrilling but it does not have as long of a ride time because they did not include the dark side parts and instead they put a larger coaster part.
It used to have a small dark ride portion kinda. After you turn in the lagoon (after the big drop) you’d go up an elevator and there were screens where you could be seen rising out of the sea. Sadly they’ve been turned off for years
Rode the original iteration a few times as a kid and the Medusa voice actress and set pieces made it terrifying for me. I’ll never be a thrill ride junkie but for a dark ride this is intense and it was one I rode again despite fearing it. Seaworld did an amazing thing with this ride and if they implemented more rides like this they would be stiff competitors to Universal and WDW. They’ve already taken a step in that direction with their own iteration of Howl-O Scream at Seaworld Orlando.

Journey to Atlantis will always have a place in my heart, since I went to Universal with my family and the camera didn't work the first time, we went again and it didn't work that time either. we finally got it on the 3rd attempt, we were soaked and cold, but we has a great time. overall super underrated and I will always remeber this ride fondly
I love this ride because its not what you think its going to be if that makes any sense.
I went to seaworld summer camp years ago, and my friend convinced me to go on this ride, and explained the whole ride through as detailed as possible, and yet the rollercoaster drop and some of the dark ride parts still surprised me, even though i knew they were there

I don't think I ever noticed the aquarium across from the queue exit, and I've been to SW Orlando tons of times!
I think the dark ride elements can be disarming and intriguing for kids/teens who are scared to ride a "thrill" ride. At least that was the case for me as this was the first "thrill" ride I ever rode and it encouraged me to ride more rides so it has a special place in my heart. If it is torn down I will miss it greatly.
I thought I remembered that the ride had sounds and a evil Medusa animatronic before the big drop. That makes sense that they turned it off, now that you say that due to budget restraints. I remember her scaring me when I was really little before I started riding the big coasters. Later on she didn’t and then that part of the ride disappeared. I still go on it because of the cool scenery and it’s a water ride where you don’t get completely soaked. Hopefully one day though Seaworld sees it’s potential and fixes the ride, returning it to its original glory with a working Medusa animatronic.

Last time I went to SWO I was a little kid and my dad wanted to go on this ride but I was too tired but now since I’m interested in coasters I would love to go again and I would love to ride this ride because it has always intrigued me and I would be sad if it closed
I absolutely loved this ride growing up, it’s a shame to see they’ve let it slip into disrepair. Seaworld has slipped out of my visit list, if they made more interesting dark rides like this that probably wouldn’t have happened

This is my favorite ride... I just rode this a few weeks ago, and it's so sad to see what it has become. It's like a chunk of my childhood has just been stripped down to nothing. It's a shell of it's former self.
As an employee of sea world the reason Atlantis is the way it is….. a lot of the animatronics don’t work and the ride breaks down consistently. But before that it was deemed too scary for kids so that’s why there’s no story anymore.
I like it! I like themed rides, I just don’t go on it a lot because I don’t want to get wet.
I remember riding this as a kid. They loaded the boat with several "heafty" people on one side. Damn near thought we were going to capsize.

I’ve only been on it once and wish they’d update it and add effects and add a little more theming. Especially around the drop, the boards with nothing there just took me out out of it and the roof outside did too
I think it is high past time for them to start a whole revamp process for the ride. Maybe make it a daring heist of atlantis only to end up facing off with the cursed sirens that control atlantis. You can start by being lured in by singing and treasure only to end up being surrounded by monsters. You flee higher up but the higher up you go the greater the danger. Just when it looks like you can escape they drag you back to the top where you flee from the monsters before crashing back down to the bottom before exiting out of the ride.
I've been on the ride and I loved it, the only thing that breaks the illusion of the story is the rooftop
I remember riding this as a kid when I was going through my Greek mythology phase. I thought it was awesome
I love this ride. It was the first coaster my son went on. He isn't keen on going again 🤣
I liked this ride when I went on it as a kid. Some elements of it seemed kind of sloppy and the story was a bit odd but all in all it was a fun ride with a great atmosphere and I’d love to go on it again before they do get rid of it.
AB put 4 of these into the sea world parks. Bg Williamsburg his fire and is awesome. The ones in Texas and CA are lacking. But this is the best of the bunch.
I vote that all of us that love the ride go to the reviews and/or contact us sections and write that we want to see more rides like it and that it’s our favorite part. I think that’s the only way they’ll change.
I remember waiting with my mom and grandparents in line for this ride and the videos they played while waiting in line made me scared that I made everyone leave and everyone was mad at me. Lolz it's good to finally see what it looks like. Glad I didn't ride it.
I hope it never is shut down and replaced. I enjoy the ride and it would be awesome if they brought back the story again.
It's difficult to assess what will become of it. I've heard it's a maintenance nightmare, but it's so unique to a SeaWorld park.
I remember watching an old UA-cam video of Atlantis and was thinking was the Beetlejuice music part of the ride or was it part of the video? Turns out it was actually in the ride before the refurbishment.
It's so odd, but I suppose it was part of the charm.
This ride in wrapped up in one of those very specific traumatic childhood memories for me 😂 When I was a kid I was a huge scaredy cat when it comes to thrill rides (still hate most of them but I will do them now). My family begged me to Journey to Atlantis when I was like 8 or 9. I agreed. Didn't enjoy one bit of the dark ride part because I was dreading the drop. We dropped. My Dad was doing the whole "see that wasn't that bad" thing Dads say after you do something scary or hard. Then we start going up again. I start freaking up just saying "what goes up must come down" over and over again. Dad was trying to calm me saying "no it's a one drop ride that's it." I was right and he was wrong. 😅🙈 That 2nd "S curve" drop is *burned* into my brain forever and not in a good way 😂😅
I agree, that was TRAUMATIZING.
Had no idea the San Diego version was so different and so much shorter than this Orlando ride.
I went to SeaWorld San Antonio and half remembered that SeaWorld somewhere had an Atlantis themed dark ride and got all excited when I saw the signs for San Antonio’s Atlantis themed ride and then got in line and got all bummed when I realized it’s just a lift hill and drop into a splash hill. Still fun, but I thought I was getting a dark ride 😂

The excuse for not enough money to upkeep it and not turning back on the effects and story for the ride is crazy. They have plenty of money to keep building coasters so I don’t see why they can’t just turn on the effects and story for the ride to do what it’s supposed to do. It’s not journey to Atlantis if they story isn’t being told and the animations not being used. Like Medusa poppin up with the lighting before going up the lift is iconic, the fake out moments, and her saying “going somewhere,, I think not.” As you hit that small hill after the big hill, just makes it all the more intense. I really think they should bring it back to life. It stood out and made sense, but without it they just make it seem like just a water ride. And that’s such a shame cuz it really does have a bunch of potential

Gosh, I remember this one. I begged for my dad to take me on it (despite trying to be dissuaded with remote controlled boat) simply because I had an extra dress. I was spooked wet, and I still kinda wish I had taken the boat.
I've been on the San Antonio version. It's pretty underwhelming. Also I'm pretty soured on Sea World since I saw Black Fish, interesting that their attendance fell, I guess I wasn't the only one.
They've certainly been struggling, but they finally started to come back after starting to phase out their animal shows. Now with the pandemic though, they're obviously not in a good place.
As Sea World continues to move away from animal shows (definitely a good thing) I think they should focus on more dark rides along with roller coasters. I personally love Atlantis and always tried to go on it the one year I had an annual pass. In some ways it reminds me of one of my favorite Universal rides, Revenge Of The Mummy. It makes me sad that this style of ride is going out of fashion because they're such a fun blend of G Forces and immersive themeing.
