      Some may object to using a $2300 Canon lens on the Canon vs a $700-800 third party lens on the Sony - I personally see more odd color (with Samyang/Rokinon) and contrast (with Tamron) with 3rd party lenses - but I think the results of this test are still pretty much valid. It's essentially a wash except for the log shots. Half of the first 8 shots I picked Sony and half I picked Canon. I picked Canon for all 4 of the log scenes. Cheers.

      Great review! Yes, the R5 is amazing in low light and probably the king up to ISO 12,800. I think it's very underrated in its low light abilities and the colours, especially at 8:10 look 100x better on the R5. People just assume that because of the large sensor the R5 will suck at low light but Canon did something special with their new cameras and they make their own sensors unlike Nikon and Fuji who just rehash Sony sensors.

    Issue I've had with Sony is that Greenish tint which you can still see on the girl and the little boys skin, as well as the chrome trim on the truck and the dogs fur.
    Other than that greenish-blue tint, Sony is really good. one of the reasons it looks more attractive at a glance is because your eye is more attracted to the green color in that first split second when seeing a plant or an image, it's a survival thing. I think the Cine line of Sony cameras is the only camera that doesn't have this greenish look from my user experience.

      Just to reply to my own question - I've not noticed any green tint with my Sony A7c and Sony 35mm f1.8 (skin tones are great), BUT I've heard the 35mm Samyang can give a green tint (I'd imagine it's the same with all Samayang lenses, and is likely due to the lens coatings used).

      I end up using the camera colors maybe 10% of the time... This whole exercise only applies to what the camera does automatically... Raw files contain hundreds of shades of color in-between every possible color step in a 24bit image. Seems silly to let a very simple automatic routine in a camera choose exactly how those 14 bits (16384 shades) per color gets rendered down to 8bits (256 shades) per color. over 90% of the information in the image gets thrown away to make that 24bit image. Am I going to choose what to keep and what to throw out of that data or will I let a very weak AI choose for me?

  • @truevilmeow
    @truevilmeow 3 роки тому +11

    One thing to note is that you were using S.Gamut 3 Cine. Unless you've been given some new Cine LUT, The Sony LUT isn't made for the Cine profile so you probably messed the colours up there.
    S-Gamut3.Cine is also the wrong LUT to use for UA-cam.
    "Combining S-Gamut3.Cine with S-Log3, which has gradation characteristics similar to those of scanned negative film, makes it easier to grade a movie for playback on devices such as a digital cinema projector."
    For a closer comparison, try use S-Log2 and the standard S-Gamut.

      It is not fake at all, just smaller than on the cinema cameras. You can use the smaller .cine variants instead.
      You can use whatever you like with UA-cam as capture and rendering aren't the same. S log 3 gives a lot of latitude for editing.

The waterfall (3rd image) the Canon shows the rock face with a cold blue cast, the waterfall has lost detail, and the shadows under the trees are darker and less detailed... while the Sony waterfall mage is better is every way including colours. In the first eight images the Canon shows some faced with a little less detail (slightly blurred?). This is very odd (I trust Max got it right) as the Canon has dual pixel auto-focus and a 4K HQ image (down sampled 8K).... which should on paper match or beat the Sony but fails in these real-life tests.
      The most troubling image is the last image (little Max under the street lights)... at first I gave the win to the Canon (sharper & better colours) but changed it to a tie... the Canon has made the image with "Canon colours" by typical pushing red into the skin tones but also the yellow brick has been "correct" for daylight yellow (looks unnatural)?? .... However, the Sony seems truer to life for a nighttime streetlight scene (there is a natural colour cast). I find the Canon colours tend to be over processed and are not accurate to life.
      On top of this the Canon also has overheating issues with high quality modes and the Canon codecs are more CPU intensive to edit.

    I found A always had better/natural color spectrum/resolving in the images, and the B has always had either green or magenta over-tones which looked lacking wider color-spectrum, (i,e resolving image into a narrower color spectrum with these over-tone shades).....that said color preferences are subject to personal perception of the image/scene....... Big thanks to Max for this beautiful experiment as it helps my own decision in future as am not yet committed to either system......

    Its interesting that when we usually talk about skin tones, its typically in reference to Caucasian skin. I'd really like see a comparison of camera colors with models who are Indian, Native American, Black, Asian, Middle Eastern etc. Let's see what these cameras do with different skin tones across the board. It think that would offer a more realistic, accurate picture of how skin tones are handled by each camera. (Of course that maybe difficult during Covid, but just something we need to see...sometime)

    • @ariesmight6978
      @ariesmight6978 3 роки тому +6

      Certainly there is a reason why caucasions are used as models. Color tones are easier to notice. Vs on someone who's skin color is brown or coffee black. Especially in bright to low light conditions. Now if you are going to test sensor capability. In low to very low light conditions. Then including people who's skin color. That is brown trough coffee black. Alongside white, red and yellow would be perfect.

    Hi MAX ! great vids as usual!
    when you get the C70 in , please could you do a image quality test ? 8k + 8k raw verses C70 highest quality you can get from it.
    the 8k just looks so nice and id like to know how the c70 stacks up against it. I saw the canon Australia video with the two musicians on the rock but that didn't impresss me at all !! ... also is the 422 of the c70 going be as hard to edit as the R5 ?
    many thanks .. hope you make this video

    I keep finding that s-log, even in the hands of people that know what they’re doing, looks worse than c-log. I still preferred the Canon colors on the 709 profiles in most of the shots, but the Sony colors looked good and close enough that it wouldn’t really sway me either way in terms of buying a camera.

    Very cool video. Its pretty easy to spot the Sony footage for the trained eye. Shadows are better exposed and skin tones are more green/yellow on a Sony. Sony is also sharper in the areas of contrast. The one clip that did fool me was the waterfall image in the first set. I found that the clips with faces I preferred the Canon skin tones. I was also surprised that I preferred both low light clips shot with the R5. Cool video. I'll pass this along to my photographer buddies.

    Hi Max, I was very surprised, I liked the Sony colours better. I would love you to do a low light comparison next with these cameras. The Sony has dual gain iso, so in slog3 when it hits 12800 iso, the noise is dramatically reduced. Do you think the R5 has had a dual gain sensor?

    I finished up with 7 for Canon, 5 for Sony. Some were kinda closer in terms of which looked better and more natural (not always the same thing), in some scenes the difference was massive. The interesting part was though that when I focus on one aspect (e.g. only skin tones or only green foliage or like overal weird shifts in clear colors like white, orange, yellow) my outcome was not consistent. I took my time looking at various aspects of each scene, made some comments by how much I thought there is a difference and where I saw them before revealing the result to myself. So apparently it is possible to note e.g. an unnatural green shift in the skin tone in both Canon and Sony. But obviously those are example scenes and it might be hard to extrapolate that to every other situation. Nevertheless, I would have assumed it to be more consistent what I find in each camera.
    I really like the recent results I have seen on the Sony A7s iii in terms of colors, but overally I found the Canon results here better. I am shooting Sony right now and like the colors it produces, maybe I should give Canon a shot some time.
    Your effort you put into this video is highly appreciated. These types of videos are so much more helpful than the "typically found" ones.

    i was hoping youd switch up the shots a little. It was obvious the B was a little greener and probably the sony in every shot. I preferred it in all cases except shots 2 and 12 where the red was nicer than the green. I still hate that the sky turns out teal with sony instead of blue, i could never figure out how they keep colors pretty accurate then make the sky completely change no matter where i shoot.

    I have to say that i like the pictures of the R 5 better than the S 3, bc the colors are without much tweaking so much richer. But on the hand i have to admit that i have smaller hands and shorter fingers, which means that i would feel more comfortable having to hold the S 3 than the R 5 in my hands. As soon as the extrem amount of covid cases go down in California i will go to a Best Buy to see how they both compared feel then i hold them in my hands. One question for you Max is the Canon RF 27/70 2.8 roughly the same size as the similar Sony G Master lens. That could maybe be the deciding difference in which camera i will choose

  • @Universeal13
    @Universeal13 3 роки тому

    It's so easy to know which one is what. Since i shoot both systems i can see the difference. Sony have a green tint and canon magenta, and on canon at least on skin tone is so good but on sony not that much and even how much you try in post there is still that little green cast that you can't get rid off. I've saw and on other reviewers aswell

    Hey Max, I have a question. Are you sure you didn't mix up the cameras the second shot, with the kid in the car? Or is it a WB difference? Because the Sony image has an overall green hue and the Canon leans more towards the magenta side, in the other shots. That being said, I picked the Canon for most shots. Sony Should definitely work on their color science some more. They ought to give us an in camera color science profile switcher in the menu. That would be great.

      Sony is much better in low light but when it comes to log, and color grading.
      Sony tends to break and becoming grainy, and also no camera can beat canon 4K HQ,. Even Tony, Gerald, and frono see the difference,.
      The only downside of r5 is overheating issues,. That's why gelard undone and others would not recommend r5 for professional work of videography,.
      Probably Bcam,. For short highlights,. But never as a Acam,.
      Canon really sucks, they intentionally crippled r5 because they released new camera the c70

    I got everything as A except one B and one where it depends which bit of the image you look at, but picked A, just.

    The Canon has simply the warmer colors / higher contrast between warm and cooler colors. I know that a lot of you tubers say that you can make the Sony A 7 S III look like the Eis R 5, but how much extra time, per video will this take you.....the decision will come up for me in Summer then i have to make the decision. What makes my decision making tougher is that i will need a 3 camera set up, and for that both of theses cameras plus a more budget friendlier can era, but which makes videos of a similar Quality like the Lumix S 5 will be pricey. Max what would be your advice as which camera too choose. Just so you know it will be a music production, gear reviews covers, centric channel ?

    I was expecting that you would switch what camera A and B were randomly, so it would be more about the image and less about guessing which camera was which letter. I think that might have been a better way to do it. I picked Sony twice, Group 1: Shot 2 and Group 2: Shot 1. The rest were A for me, pretty definitively. Even though I thought you were switching what A and B were.
