The Canon A1Digital Hi8 Camcorder

- A brief descriptive video of my Canon A1DigitalA Hi8 Camcorder. I found this locally for real cheap, and I liked it so much that I decided to keep it. I had to have 161 surface mounted capacitors, and 2 fuses replaced, but now it works like brand new. Enjoy this video of a piece of Camcorder History! Filmed with a SONY DCR-TRV9 MiniDV Camcorder.

When I first got the camcorder, it was completely dead and when you attempted to connect it to a battery or the AC Adapter, it actually created a burnt smell, which was the leaky electrolyte from the capacitors burning off. 161 capacitors and 2 fuses had to be replaced to bring it back to life again - but it was well worth it, it's an awesome analog camcorder.
I recently took this camcorder with me to Blowing Rock, NC. I had a great time with it, even though it does get quite heavy and cumbersome to carry around too much, it did not bother me though. I recently acquired a Canon LX-100A, which is similar to this model but it has the ability to have interchangeable lenses. I will have to make a video of it soon.
I have a Canon HV30, and it takes excellent HD video. This Canon A1 Digital takes excellent hi-band analog video. They both work great for different purposes.
Sorry about the audio/video flicker every-so-often, I think that I had a bad connection to the computer. Enjoy!
Does anyone know whether a tape recorded in one of these Canon A1HI can play in another 8mm camcorder? I have a few tapes recorded in an A1HI and I'm trying to convert to MP4 file format but they won't play in any of my three Sony camcorders. If I pause the tape I can see an image in the VF but as soon as I hit play again it briefly plays but then blue screen. I have tried in PAL and NTSC. Any ideas? TIA
Do you know how can i change date on the camera?
Why is the video bugging/skipping?
Hello-any idea why I’m getting no sound when I hook up to a pc? I see the video, but get no sound, and no problem with my speakers. (There’s a user’s manual I’m unrolling and scanning I’ll trade for help...) Thanks!
I've got the exact same camera you're showing in the video. I can record video (nice quality) & play the video in another hi8 & it plays fine. Unfortunately when I try to play it in the Canon all I get is a fuzzy screen. I don't think its an alignment issue since it records fine but what do I know. Any insights as to the cause of the problem?
Ok what was the simptoms that camera had, so you you had to replace all of those capacitors? 168? if i understand right ;)
I've got the same camera for europe, that's A2Hi :) and will see how will it work :)
Hello @Zachary! Have you shared how you repaired the pcb with the new capacitors?
If you had access to another defective A1 Digital, would it be worth repairing in 2021, compared to other technologies (used or new)?
Hey! I actually sent this camcorder off to a repairman that specialized in these to have it overhauled, that was many years ago, and he has since passed away. I had it repaired for nostalgic purposes, I would not recommend bothering now-a-days. If you need to play Hi8 tapes, there are many other more modern camcorders and VCRs that would be far more reliable than the Canon in this video. This video was made at least 10 years ago if I remember correctly, and I still have the camcorder in the video, but it's packed away due to the viewfinder going bad on it (that would make the 3rd time I would have had to send it in for repair that is out of my ability) so I decided to retire it. Playback and recording still work, just no viewfinder .. I love these old hi-band camcorders, but their micro electronics were very unreliable.
Zach! Help! I just picked up one of these off of ebay. I knew I was going to have to work on this. Do you have a list and supplier for the caps you replaced? I have a junction tester for testing the capacitors and have already found a few. This looks like quite a project and I'm just looking for some encouragement.
Unfortunately, I do not have any of the info on repairing it. It was many years ago that I had it repaired, and the guy that did it is no longer in business. I do have another repair guy that might be able to help though: www.doctorsony.com He did an awesome job refurbishing a SONY CCD-V801 for me recently, he also works on other brands. I still have my Canon A1 Digital, but the viewfinder no longer works. I had to have it repaired 2 times since this video was made in 2008, and I have since put it away after the viewfinder quit. I really enjoyed using it though, very unique analog camcorder.
Wow! Thanks for the quick response! I'll check out the link you sent. I actually used to sell these in the early 90's. I have it disassembled and I think I need to treat it as a winter "project". I think I have a Sony 8mm around my mess here somewhere. Really looking to transfer a whole crud-load of old tapes that I have. Thanks and thank you for your great video post!
hey zac, can you do a video of how to fix this thing? it's dirt cheap on ebay if broken
How much were these cameras going for back when you bought it?
is it HD
or standar deff
I have 2 of these my husband bought new that I'd like to sell - there was only 1 on ebay when I went to see what they were going for these days - is it that no one wants them or that they are all keeping them?
Can you show us how to fix one? I have three of these that need to be fixed.
Does this camera record to compact flash card (or similar) or only to DV tapes?
Phil Anderson hey! This is completely analog video using only the Hi8 or 8mm video cassette tape. No memory cards at all.
