Thanks for posting this. I met Emily in December 1989 as I had to write a feature article on her. Now, I am the only female jazz guitar player in my town so I totally understand what she had been through. I play some of her compositions from time to time as I want to keep them alive. I am sure there are others doing the same. Once again, big thanks.
Snatched away from us by heroin.!! Total loss of a beautiful and gifted lady who should still be here for us today !!! Can't believe 30 years have slipped past.!!!
Why is everyone giving Abercrombie so much props? Emily is the fucking virtuoso and it's her song. She should be more appreciated. Emily has some of the most consistently amazing solos of any musician I've heard.
And this is the real shit. Emily is the real deal. Such a sweet soul and an amazing educator. I learned more from a 30 minute video of hers than 10 years of BS private lessons. May the great Lord keep her in his or her graces 🙏🏽
, recorded with a pencil sharpener, that's a good one. The truth is Emily was a virtuoso who could have risen to the top of the heap . Larry Coryell once told me, if she would have lived she could have been one of the greatest ever, and he ment it. John Ambercrombie is total gentleman and maestro as well. Emily made a bad decison in Sidney a few years after this video was made, and it cost her her life. Her music lives...
That's an early Jobim tune, recorded many times, and still holds up well. I agree that I could do without the guitar effects, but it doesn't take away from how strong and lovely her playing is. I still can't believe she's gone and it's almost 20 years now. Thanks for posting this.
thanks for this video I unfortunatly didn't get hip to Emily until it was too late. I have learned much from listening to her music as well as Wes. The more I play, the more I play. Jazz lives
nice Martino stuff somewhere around 9:20. love Abercrombie--he was making some excellent records during these years. of course this is 14 years after Metheny showed up at berklee.
This song is a Brazilian bossa/samba style and she is good at this style and, of course, jazz. Bossa nova uses the same type of jazz chord melody as jazz. I am from Brazil and LOVE both jazz and bossa. The beginning of the song goes like this "Sadness does not have end, happiness does.." (Tristeza nao tem fim, felicidade sim...).
You were at this show? That is absolutly incredable. Man, if you remember half this night and the performances taking place then you are a lucky person. Wow, no kidding, you were at this show???? Emily in person. WoW, Right on man. Can you imagine seeing Emily and Metheny together? That would have been something.
Why is everyone giving Abercrombie so much props? Emily is the fucking virtuoso and it's her song. She should be more appreciated. Emily has some of the most consistently amazing solos of any musician I've heard. Also her comping is badass.
John Abercrombie played a Fest at a very small college nearby. At one point he traded solos with Bob, our music teacher. Afterwards, I overheard a student say, "Bob kicked John Abercrombie's a%%" - which I think misses the point because 1) I JA does seem like a "gentleman" who'd let the guy have his moment, and 2) JA's playing, for me, is often so abstract and spacey the 1st time, but it grows on me. Anyway, I'm giving JA "props" b/c I know of him - and thanks to him, now I know her too.
Wow, I was at this gig, at the Berklee Performance Centre; a plethora of guitarists as I remember! I seem to remember Pat Metheney and Mick Goodrick were also on. Jazzster, do you have any more from this gig? Or anything else from the same era at Berklee?
FWIW, if you can tolerate a bit of NYC downtown avant-garde in your jazz, you ought to check out Mary Halvorson. She's not in a hard bop bag like Emily, so for my money her compositions are more interesting, although no doubt she wouldn't challenge your admiration of Emily's soloing skills ...
@tubeiroe :oh, come on man.. that is not really true! Abercrombie does just fine here-he is no slouch, and anyway, it's just silly to compare them & say one "destroys" the other..I mean- what is the Point? dig how they have all pretty much got that chorus-ey, Roland JC-120 sound that was all the rage back in the 80's!!
I like the incredible guitarist Emily Remler was !
Love this tune!

I'm terribly envious of anyone who got to see Emily in person. Thanks again for another great clip!
Thank you for posting this, God, she was great
she would have been about 50 today, a huge loss
And this is the real shit.
Emily is the real deal.

I just discovered Abercrombie - and this is the real game :) but one is better than another. Excelent guitar playing by Emily and John.
She was truly amazing , I learned lots of useful theory from her. I still listen to her even now, years later. She was a great one in many ways..
I was there :-) Great show

Super solo de John sur une très belle composition, deux grands guitaristes que j'ai beaucoup écouté merci à vous.
Sad I only discovered her within the past year. I guess I wasn't looking. So glad to have found her. She was truly brilliant.
Merci Merci Merci A John Abercrombie d'avoir Joué Avec Emily Et DanielRomano Signé VinPasse

She is missed so much. Such a loss for the whole universe.
👏👏👏 !!!
Abercrombie!!!!
This song was recorded by Emily and was written by her as well. Maybe there's another song "Brigas Nunca Mais".
🥀❣️☺️🌱
Nunca Mais is Never More in portuguese.
Emily is nice!!
Why is the same chorus pedal so good in the hands of say, The Cure's R obert Smith such a pollution of good tone when jazzers use 'em?
It must be the amp they are using at that time, those Roland or Yamaha Jazz Choruses were famous in the 80s
gets ridiculously funky at 8:55
Scofield!

Sco was really working the skullet back then, wasn't he? :)
It says in description
J'aime t'ai chansons a 8%
Unfortunately, Emily doesn't like anybody anymore...RIP

Emily has the perfect amount of chorus effect going on. I think most players use too much
yary gork Thank you so true I didn't even realize it. Such a subtle warm sounding guitarrist.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. This isn't "Brigas" is what I meant to say.
Nunca Mais or Nunca Mas?
nunca mais
Is jhon Scofiel ?
Was she hurting that much? So sad.
Jazz is Jazz
sorry, not 9:20, but 5:50
You sure about that?? Sure sounds nothing like the great Jobim tune "Brigas Nunca Mais" Perhaps it is exactly what Scofield said at the beginning.
Looks like it's recorded with pencil sharpener, but great music!
Actually not...Not even close to being the same song...
