Make Your Own Jewelry Tools: Make A Dapping Set (Mushroom Former) With Thermoplastics

- In this video, I'll show you how to use thermoplastics to create tools for the jewelry studio. This video focuses on making a Mushroom Former (a large dapping punch and block). Thermoplastics are great tool makers and can be used to make mallets, forming tools as well, holding settings for stone setting, and many more uses. Realitivelyinexpensive and reusable, thermoplastics are a great addition to a jeweler's toolbox.
Tools and Materials used in this video (and ideas):
Jett Ballistic. A thermoplastic that contains Kevlar. Really strong amzn.to/2InoiEB
Jett Basic: A thermoplastic sans Kevlar. Strong. I have not used this for making dapping sets but, have used it for file handles and other tools. amzn.to/3eRIv11
Other thermoplastics - I have not used these to make punches with but, I will be testing a few of them, in the future. amzn.to/3eYJ899
Different ideas to create the "bowl" shape.
Lacrosse ball without printing amzn.to/3kpUXpT
Superballs amzn.to/36uDaZN (various)
Cue balls amzn.to/3kszEUq
Metal ladles amzn.to/3pqYN5C
Candlepin or duckpin bowling balls (large dishes!)
Coin Ring Making Forged Steel Balls (for smaller dapping sets - 1" diameter and less) amzn.to/2K4pHAf
Coin Ring Making Forged Steel Balls (for smaller dapping sets 1/2" and less) Coin Ring Making
Dog balls
Snow Cone maker - I can't find the type that I used in the video, anymore.
Remember raised and recessed areas will imprint in the thermoplastic. Try to find smooth molds.
You can make a punch by using the "bowl" that you just made, to shape it in. The process is the same as with the punch I made - push the material into the "bowl", insert the dowel and build up a wall around the dowel and the punch area. Be sure to use a mold release like vaseline or silicone spray on the "bowl" before pushing the material into it. But, try to keep the release away from the punch area - especially where you want to apply material around the dowel. If you get the release on the parts that you want to join, they will not bond together. Don't reuse material that has a release on it until it is thoroughly cleaned. Wash well with hot water and a strong soap like Dawn dish detergent to remove any release material before reusing the plastic. If the material still feels slick, don't put it back in the container, and maybe don't reuse it - up to you!

Rawhide Mallets amzn.to/38INkJ3
The rawhide mallet size that I used is a size 3: amzn.to/3nkCGMt
The plastic Mallet that I used is a size 2 - face 1 1/2" amzn.to/2H1oNn2. Another option is a size 1 - with a face of 1 1/4" amzn.to/3eVEed2

Love the way your brain works! Practical and Hilarious!
Kind of how I live: Get stuff done and then laugh at how silly it all is! Thank you so much! N
Only being able to give one small thumbs up is not enough to convey how truly useful that information is.
Nancy you my dear are a GENIUS!!!! I have limited funds to purchase tools with and you just opened up so many opportunities for me and many others I am sure!!!! Thank you so much for sharing all these fantastic videos with us!! ❤
I'm gonna have to get some of that for the kids. The crazed mischief they can do fills me with terrified joy.
Haha! It can be hot! Thanks have fun
Love this woman
Love to see hand made tools!
Thanks you from Tasmania Australia
Oh the possibilities!!! Good one Nancy!!
helpfull+interesting=amazingly useful
GRRRReat idea! I need to try to make a mold for copper bowls and plates for enameling!
This was a great tip! I've used thermoplastic for stonesetting ut never thought I could use it to make tools. I need to get some more of it. Thank you!
We've missed you!!! So glad you're back. :)
So happy you’re back!
Brilliant!!
Nancy, love your videos!
Could you do a video about polishing out solder stain? New to jewelry making so still trying to master soldering. Thank you
Thank you! Yesterday I got halfway through making a small dome and realised I needed a smaller punch than I have. So this video came at just the right time! Very excited with all the possibilities!!
Cool idea, thanks for sharing your thoughts
Thank you for helping me smile is a crazy time that is threatening to seriously dampen my sense of humour, and teaching me something that I might never use, but could use the principle to make something else useful. Not quite sure what at this point though :)
You are amazing!!
Great idea
Beautiful
love it thanks much
Cool, thank you.
Brilliant! Glad you're back.
Cool. You might be able to make a texturing punch with the stuff.
I bet you could! Try it! Have fun.
good idea!
i love lot temp thermo plastic. i have a big gob of it i have mixed with abbrasive and i can make a contour sanding shape super easy with it.
Amazing! I'm now really excited about using this stuff. Wondering if I can also use it for press moulding, or shot plates... (May be going too far?)
Try it! I’m thinking all sorts of tools in my head right now. Have fun!
I was wondering if you could use this with a hydraulic press and make an impression die with it?
