Hi Wifey, Thanks so much for a great comment. I do "get" the budget thing as I still budget. I also hate getting ripped off! I think jewelry tools and products are overpriced! Plus, there's an amazing amount of learning that we do when we make our own tools, components and products. The other advantage to making our own is that there is more room for creativity. All good reasons to think outside the box and save! Thanks again. Take care and enjoy! Nancy

You are one of the VERY BEST jewelry instructors here on you tube. Thank you so much for all of your videos. They really help to refresh my memory from metals class years ago. Please make one about how you should only file one direction. I see so many people filing back and forth, and I was taught never to do this.

I'm just learning how to solder, and I'm pretty impoverished. I started right off using vinegar & salt pickle, and I was happy to finally found a use for the box of borax in the garage. I've been using it alone as flux, but it's large chrystals which are usually blown off by the torch before it melts, even when mixed with water, after the water evaporates. Will the alcohol resolve the blowing off issue? Can isopropol alcohol be used (it's a little dangerous around my house to have an open bottle of booze on hand, I'll just kill it and nothing will be accomplished, and I always have some isopropol)? Why did you coat the sheet with flux? I loved the pretty copper pieces with the little pegs. I must figure out how to put a large peg like that on a concho buckle where one seems to be missing someday! but what were you going to do to the copper pieces that required the blocking liquid? I LOVE your videos! Thank you Nancy.

You have helped me so much! I really love that you get that many of us are not made of money and need to economize. Thanks to your tips and techniques, I've been able to do more than I thought I'd be able to on a budget. I am now making all of my own findings and they are a better quality than the ones I used to order. Thank you!

I have enameled penny's that are 1981 and older, made a really cute necklace with them, can also solder them. If you torch a penny that is 1982 or newer you quickly have a puddle of zinc

Hi Mkinder, I use the 20 mule team as another source of borax when making flux. For some reason, we didn't do the demo on that - although, as you see, I was planning on it. Use the same recipe as with the pharmacy borax. Thanks for the kind comments and thanks for watching. Nancy

many drug stores are no longer carrying boric acid. You can also get it at the hardware store in the insecticide section as roach kill,

If you have trouble finding boric acid, look on the pest repellant isle. Most powdered roach repellant brands are boric acid.

I don't drink but I do use vodka for making herbal tinctures, its safe to drink and does the job of extracting the plant alkaloids. I have no idea why I felt I had to tell everyone that lol! Oh its because of the cats and you speaking about felting catfur...yes I use my remedies on myself, my family and my animals if they need them...not by force lol!

@ceah01 I have an alternative besides using the copper penny. Use silver solder then, make a solution of "blue pickle" (jeweler's pickle that has copper in it from pickling copper and sterling silver) and a piece of steel. (steel binding wire will work). Drop the soldered, sanded and cleaned piece into it and it will copper plate the piece - hiding the seam. Use small amounts of solder so the solder line is very thin - a good practice to use on all soldering jobs. Less cleanup too. Good luck

@trekranger Hi Trek! Well, there is 20 Mule Team Borax that is used for laundry purposes - that will work too. Another use I know of is as an eye wash or as a wound application. I got mine in the medical section, near eye care. I hope this helps you find it. Nancy

@ceah01 Hi. I think Pripps is great but the other is cheaper. I find that the boric acid likes to separate from the alcohol and Pripps doesn't. I use My-T-Flux from RioGrandedotcom most of the time. If I run out I make my own. The penny thing sounds interesting. Never heard of it. Will have to try it. The Palmolive sounds interesting too. I'll look into it. Did you see my patina page on my website - under technique? Many other ideas there. Thanks for writing. I appreciate it! N

Wait really, boric acid is at walgreens? I spent a fortune at my local ten times price of my wholesaler jewelry store because he atleast sells smaller amounts than Rio's giant box of it. That is so exciting if I can find it at walgreens! Wow. And seriously vodka?? I'm so mad I somehow missed this video forever ago because I went to no joke 7 stores for denatured alcohol before I finally found at a smaller local hardware store. Vodka however is avail literally everywhere here in hawaii hahaha. You're incredible and I'm still watching and literally going "holy s**t!!" White out to stop solder flow?? Ok woah. Now I just need help with heat sinks. How can I stop separating old seams and melting earring posts and silly little fine and Argentium parts while soldering the Sterling parts etc. Despite using medium and easy wire solder in order etc I just suck at not melting things. (Or rock at melting things! Half glass full right? Lol) thank you so much nancy you are absolutley incredible all you've taught me over the years!

Hi Nancy! I love your videos :). Is Boric Acid the same thing you get in 20 Mule Team? I just figured that I could use the combination of 20 Mule Team and water/vodka as a flux, but you used Boric Acid. (And then I noticed you had 20 Mule Team there in the background). I'm a bit confused between 20 Mule Team and Boric Acid. Thanks!

I am trying to make jewelry using old silver plated forks and spoons. Will the solution you mentioned help stop the silverplate being damaged when I heat the fork to bend it? If I don't heat the forks they break and if I do heat them I basically remove most of the finish.
