Traveling can be stressful, but having the right carry-on suitcase can make all the difference. Thanks for these comprehensive tips, Laurie. Keep sharing more.
A packing list is a fantastic idea. I have one for several kinds of trips: overnight/weekend jaunts as well as a 4-week version. It saves the hassle of trying to remember every item or taking too many items. I hate wasting money on forgotten items as well as the time required to go out and find them at my destination. I stick to the essentials on that list--nothing else. Every time I throw in "something extra" that's the thing that doesn't get worn, but I've lugged it around for weeks. The list is organized by personal item and the carry-on suitcase. In addition, over the years I put the same items in the same places which eliminates panic-pawing to find something. I also include the price/value of the pieces in the suitcase on that list and keep copies on my phone a computer and a flash drive I leave at home. Once I was asked whether I had purchased and brought any jewelry back with me. After that, before leaving I also photograph everything--especially jewelry--so that if there is a question at customs on my return, the dated photo is proof that I did not purchase an item during my travels. If ever I need to make an insurance claim, I have the list. Using that system also leaves room in my bag--even a carry-on--for items I purchase while away. Sometimes I have shipped purchases to my home address rather than toting them around, but I do have to remember to declare them.
Managed Australia with a 19” Travel Pro and a Vera Bradley Weekender bag. I was amazed how creatively you can pack the Travel Pro even though it was a smaller size. Once I sat on it and zipped, it stayed together and looked new after all the connecting flights. The Vera Bradley Weekender I have had for years and carry over my shoulder usually even though I can slip it over the Travel Pro handle. It is squishy so I can get it under seats or in tight overhead spaces. The pocket in front held my tickets and passport prior to security. I swear by that bag and Vera Bradley has an outlet where you can get it fairly cheap sometimes.
@@donkiml5805 I took 3 pairs of shoes but only used my Merrell clogs. Trying to remember how I fit everything in. My Vera Bradley holds lots of stuff so I must have had a pair of shoes in that bag too. I appreciated the smaller size when it easily fit on the smaller connecting flights.
the feature I really like, and only half of the suitcases in my household have it, is a strap that buckles onto itself by the top handle of the suitcase. this buckles around the pull up handle of another suitcase, and you can pull as many as you need like a train behind you. as the designated porter in my household, this makes my job so much easier than trying to herd free range spinners around.
Laurie ! You’ve taken me from being a chronic overpacker to having done my first carry on only 6 day trip !!! Thank you so much for all the great tips !
I love my Level8 spinner. Got a great deal on an Amazon Prime event. Love the ability to lock up my belongings, safe storage of my laptop and the wheels are amazing. It rolls so effortlessly. I also love the once zip side. Great for putting dirty clothes on the return trip. Thanks so much for the lead on this in a past video!!
Totally agree about the double sided, open-like-a-book luggage. I borrowed one to visit my best friend who lives out of state. She had a lovely luggage rack for me to use, but the suitcase would not fit! For my entire visit, my suitcase stayed opened on the bedroom floor. Inconvenient and unsightly.
Hi Laurie - I love all your videos and have watched for years. A critical feature affecting my choice of a carryon is the weight of the bag, So many bags claim to be light, but they weigh 7-10 pounds or more when empty! I own the Travelpro Maxlite International Rollaboard (weighs a little more than 5 pounds) and recommend it as both lightweight, sturdy, well organized and attractive. One minor flaw is the placement of the side handle, which is positioned horizontally rather than parallel to the side of the suitcase when it is standing. Still this is the best I have found to date and hope more choices in the 5-6 pound range will become available. Manufacturers need to consider that even wheeled bags have to be lifted - into overheads (if they are not too heavy to be allowed on board) into car trunks, onto trains and up staircases.
My number 1 consideration as well, with 7kg limit, any luggage more than 2.3kg (or about 5 lb) failed the light weight test. All these non-removable extra pockets, organiser adds weight.
I bought my TravelPro soft side carryon spinner in 21” as well as the matching TravelPro personal item bag based on reviews on this channel. I’ve loved it for a year and will never check a bag again. I’m also using compression packs recommended here. I can easily pack for 10-12 days. Just got back from Pebble Beach having a great time.
Wow! You have really thought of every little detail. I’m laughing because I thought I had looked at everything I wanted in my luggage but you have me beat. Good job!
Hi Laurie! I’m a hard-sided gal & bought a set of Away luggage 4 years ago. I got the larger carryon & fortunately it has worked in all overhead bins even on smaller aircraft (so far!). They meet all of your space & sturdiness standards & come with a lifetime warranty, so for me, they’re great. Thanks for another helpful video!
I like Away. The biggest thing I love about them is that compression leaf on the one side. I pack in the compression cubes and put them on that side and then I can compress them even more with that leaf. I have an upcoming cruise in June where I will be gone for 20 days. I think I will have to pack a checked bag as well. I don’t want to have to spend my time doing laundry. I have those On Gossamer panties so can wash them so easily in the sink or shower.
Hi Laurie, love your informative videos! My little 10 yr old VisionAir Spinner carryon had a rough trip to and from Grand Rapids and Des Moines this summer :( I rewatched this video before shopping for a replacement for an upcoming trip this fall. I'm a petite Senior with arthritis and a shoulder replacement so I was looking for a carryon that is rugged, lightweight and affordable. For years I had various Samsonite and American Tourister hard-side luggage that were great. But my old suitcases were just too heavy for me to handle as I started traveling with my elderly Mom and I was aging. Time to update my carryon! I loved the pink Samsonite carryon you featured but now most of my travel in to visit family. I checked TJ Maxx for three months and one day I found a Kenneth Cole Reaction carry for $30 less than a Samsonite. Thanks to your video I knew what to look for in a new carryon. The pretty teal Reaction carryon has all the features and durability of a Samsonite so I bought it, because TJ Maxx stuff "flies" out of the store quickly! When I came home I checked Amazon and they the same Kenneth Cole 20" Reaction in several colors, but the green color was on sale for $28 more than I paid for last years color at TJ Maxx. Thanks for all your travel tips!!!
I am not sure how many times I watched this😂 I bought the Quince and Level 8 carry on for my Swiss trip this next couple months. Quince is going back because of the unstable handle. LEVEL 8 is a keeper. THANK YOU F9R THE TIPS!
It seems that luggage designers have an opportunity to design the wheelies to be retractable. If they could rotate inside an area and lock in either the extracted or retracted positions, this would allow the overall volume of the suitcase to be expanded a bit, and the wheels would less likely get damaged when checked in with the wheelies in the retracted position.
This is such a fantastic, detailed video. I'm buying my first-ever high quality suitcase, and I want to make sure I'm investing my money on something that I know is going to last a long time and meet my needs. Thank you for ALL of the wonderful tips, recommendations, and solutions you share with us.
This is a super informative video. Laurie. I did get the Travel Pro softside as you recommended back when. I then bought one for my husband and also the Travel Pro carry underseat carry on tote for him as well. I have an underseat I've had for years. Going carry on is a challenge for this "be prepared for anything" gal. Have made it work for our last few trips when flying. I really like that new pink Samsonite carry on you featured. Look forward to how you like it as you travel more with it.
Finally a discussion about internal packing space! I would love to see internal cubic measurements listed on sales information when purchasing a carry on. Thank you.
Thanks for this info..the wheel checks are critical and thanks to this video and close ups of the wheels, I think I can judge a lot better. Also appreciate the shout out to Skyway. I got a carry on and 24" primarily because they were promoting it as super light weight (soft sided), but the wheels and organization were fantastic and have proved durable. But they don't get much love in the luggage PR. Looking forward to more videos.
I’m a year late on this video but honestly I think it’s almost timeless. You point out so many practical and useful things to consider in a carryon. You are not pushing the top 3 brands. Instead you are realistic about the how’s and why’s. Even picking up a great suitcase in JCPenney. A name brand might be good but it might just mean a higher price and useless features after the wheels fall off. I am a researcher and tend to really over research. I’ve watched too many videos on carryons the past few months. Your videos are the best I’ve seen and I recommend you as the first stop for any travel research. I’ve repeat watched a few, this one in particular. I can walk into a local store and immediately know what to look for. Thank you!
Great video, Laurie! Love my TravelPro! Just bought 24” for upcoming Spring Break road trip. I, too, store all my travel essentials in my suitcase. I can barely lift it out of closet, but I like having it all in one location.
The American Tourister 4 Kix wheeled carry-on tote is perfect as a personal item if you're flying Spirit or Frontier, where you are only allowed a personal item for free. It measures 18x14x8 (including handle and wheels) and fits in their luggage sizer. It costs less than having to check a bag last minute. It comes in pink and black. I got the pink and it worked perfectly for my recent trip to Florida on Spirit.
Thank you Laurie… i have recommended you channel to several and i continue to study all of your tips… so i am prepared for the renewed side of airtravel😉👍🌷. Enjoy your gal time!
A useful thing I have seen in Japanese suitcases is a brake. It pops out when you push a button. It means if you are anywhere you don't want to your case to roll away (a train, a hill), you can stop it rolling! Cool...
I went to my Pennys in Ocala FL and there was such a small selection! They were having a sale so I picked up the samsonite carry on expandable and checked everything. After the sale and an extra $70 off I got it for $130!!! Reg price was $350. I use compression bags so I think I’ll be ok with this one for cruise to Italy. I will also have my over the handle bag. Thank you!!!
I found you in December while looking for packing tips. Your videos are so helpful! I'm looking forward to flying✈️ with my new Travel Pro, which I know is over packed! But there's just so much space! I guess it leaves me lots of room to bring home goodies for everyone. 😊 Thank you !
I just bought a new carry on after another round of exhaustive research. It's the Andiamo Classico & it opens 70/30 with one hydraulic hinge, has RFID pockets inside & a laptop pocket inside. Hard shell, great quality wheels & Locking clasps vs zippers. I prefer clasps to zippers for all my luggage - I've had way too many cheap bags bust open at the zipper once I put my personal item bag on top.
Actually stuffing your empty luggage with your Costco haul is also a great tip for those with tiny condos that have minimal storage. Thanks for the reviews & love your family pic with your son in the back seat trying to hide. So typical!
I always love your comparison videos Laurie, you talk about the features real people really want. May I ask your candid opinion of the Away rolling carry on?
Thanks for some great videos - have utilized them when traveling recently, especially the “essentials” one! I love my Delsey spinner - sized for international travel. Good wheels, built in lock…great zippers. I use Eagle Creek compression cubes to maximize the space. My Travel Pro is way too heavy for me to lift up into the overhead now..I only use it for car trips. Thank you and safe travels!
Dear Laurie, Thank you for all the packing tips, tricks and laughter. Did NYC w/18” carry on and backpack in January. Never would have thought it possible because i usually check a bag in addition to a 22” carryon and personal bag. Next is PA for a wedding and visiting family. Am going to try carry on only again. Will be using your clothes list to help prevent over packing. Thank you so much. Best regards from a nervous but getting better flyer.
I purchased a fabulous light carry on from it luggage - 4lbs, handle runs on the outside edges instead of down the middle, loads of space with 2 outside pockets. It’s a soft side. Purchased it on Amazon Canada! Looking forward to the European Christmas markets with it!
This is the best video I have seen concerning carryon luggage! Thank you so much! You explained every feature and what to look out for so thoroughly. I now realize my wonderful older soft sided Ricardo is just too heavy. I think I now want to get a hard shell without any extra outside pockets and zippers. I recently gave away my backpack after realizing all the pockets and sturdy zippers with large pulls was very heavy when light. I figure all the extra zippers and pulls added to the weight. I now have a backpack that opens at the top like an old fashioned doctor's bag that is more user friendly for packing and lighter.
Hello Aullie & Laurie ! Glad you mentioned Ricardo. I had a set that was purchased over 2 decades ago & most of my luggage has been donated to homeless shelters, foster care system or military. I kept the tapestry carry on , that traveled the world & it's now my "sentimental bag" for all things Paul. (He actually carried that set during deployments) The organization closets on the Airstream are being upgraded to "luggage hanging closets" that will fit my "underseat". Looking forward to your packing list ! Say hello to "mama and them" ~
Thank you for these excellent tips! I noticed this video is 9 months old. Just wondering if there are updated/newer carry-on suitcases you'd recommend --or stick with the ones in this video?
You are a wealth of information! Love the TravelPro Maxlite 5 rollaboard. EC packet it folder fits perfectly in the zipper pocket. It leaves more space in the main compartment for the compression bags. You are absolutely correct about maneuvering into a restroom stall. Spinners would definitely be easier 🤣 Love the crew model that has two pockets instead of one deep on the front..and is probably more durable all around. I thought the location of the handle indicated which side of the suitcase opened on..meaning facing toward you is correct. Your videos are so helpful and I love to pack! Time to book a flight somewhere…Vegas? Banff? Thanks and have a great weekend! Have you posted a video regarding traveling with your pet?
This is great! Thanks for mentioning cobbles & rough treatment, the different airline sizes & how dimensions have been reduced lately, & how to test capacity with what we pack. I store all my travel things in my suitcase (nested cabin bag inside larger suitcase) too smile😊.
Hi Laurie - just wanted to report back and say thank you for your great tips re: carry-on luggage. Followed your advice when shopping and I'd like to add a lesser known (and very affordable) brand to the "thumbs up" list: the 22" spinner by Lily Bloom. Cute designs for ladies and sort of a "hybrid" - technically a soft side, but made of a recycled rubber type material. Sturdy and easy to clean, but with some pocket on the outside, which I life for organization. Paired this with an amazing Lovevook backpack as my personal item (your recommendation). Used packing cubes and split up my toiletries and I was able to pack for a 19-day trip with just these two pieces (did some laundry along the way, but still). :)
I got my travelpro rollaboard last year bc you did a video on the inside space of the 2 wheel vs the 4 wheel ! I gotta say I LOVE that rollaboard more than my spinner travelpro . The max lite is my fav line bc of the durability , low weight !
It is a great suitcase; the ones I saw at Macy's last year were not the same imo so I did not buy a spinner from them. The 2 wheel was fantastic but now I cannot go back to a 2 wheeler lol.
Hi Laurie, I need more luggage like I need a hole in my head but yesterday tested my willpower. I was shopping in Marshall's. Of course I checked out the luggage. Low and behold they had a Ricardo hard side roll on. It was very, very nice and either $70.00 or $80.00. I wheeled that thing around the entire store while I shopped but finally came to my senses and put it back. I would not hesitate to recommend that piece of luggage. Thanks for bringing it to our attention, I think.
I used to work in a luggage store (like a good ten years ago) and I can tell you know what you’re talking about because I share all your opinions! 😂 I’ve had a Skyway 24-25” soft sided two-wheel roller bag since then and it’s still going strong! They’re a great affordable option.
My favorite Skyway bags are from the late 90’s & had a full size of the bag expandable zipper pocket on the front and in the 24 I always put all my pants. Slid down in and was the perfect size for pants and never wrinkled and weren’t in the way! Of course they don’t make that bag anymore!! My wheels finally wore out in 2022!!
I watched your 6 minute TV packing review ! Nicely done 😊I love your channel and you have made such a difference in my packing ability pack less and more organized. Thank you for what you do! I can tell you love what you do ❤
Laurie, thanks for all the luggage tips. As I’ve said, we’re planning an international trip later this year after not having traveled by plane in 15 years! So I’ve been ordering several luggage pieces to check out. I ordered the Monos in a lovely pink but didn’t think it was worth the $130 more than my husband’s blue Level 8 so returned it. Their “try it and return it” policy wasn’t exactly that. I had to send pics showing I had never used the bag and then they charged me $40 to return it!!!! NOT HAPPY! I ordered a Level 8 in the pretty pink that I like but it doesn’t have the front pocket! Now looking at a CalPak... I’ll let you know what I finally end up with. Nashville for a girls’ trip sounds fun! Y’all enjoy!
Hi Laurie… Thank you for another great video!…Can you please recommend good quality see-through packing cubes?… Anyone else find it difficult using colored packing cubs to find what your looking for?… or just when you think that you’re done packing and you have something else to pack in the cube and can’t remember which cube it belongs in 😂 Cheers
I find it helps to have different colored packing cubes. For example, green for tops and red for bottoms, yellow for undergarments, etc. So many packing cubes are sold in matching sets.
I have the Ricardo Seahaven check in and carry on bags. I love them. Roomy and not to heavy for me to lift. My old Ricardo bags lasted over twenty years. I wanted a new set because I was jealous of my husbands spinner wheels. Lol.
Sometimes if you flip the luggage rack around, so that the side that comes up is toward you, then place the spinner so that the wheels is away from you, sometimes it works. Awesome vid!!!
Oh, about the luggage rack: instead of using a luggage rack, per se, I use a foldable storage stool. You know, the ubiquitous ersatz 'leather' one that's like 2 cubes put together (but only one compartment) that makes a long stool with the lid on, but also can be used to store items. That is along the foot of the bed in the guest room and allows guests to use the top as a luggage rack. I put extra blankets and pillows inside so guests can set up the bed to their own comfort level.
I'm a soft sided luggage person, but a couple of years ago on a trip I bought one of those small hard sided cases to fit my laptop and work papers - ... it's become my work case when I travel and it's small enough to fit all that I need for work... When I'm in the hotel, that will have to go on the bed to get out what I need and then zip up. Yes big disadvantages, but my purse that goes on the plane with this bag is big enough to fit under a seat and hold the laptop if necessary. thanks for all your tips, they are great.
You can lay the suitcase the other way on those luggage racks, with the top,and bottom along the solid metal rails. I still don't prefer them because of the space they take when opened and laid out like a book. Much easier, for me, to just lift the "lid" of a softside and lean it against the wall.
I can agree about the spinner wheels. I have both double and single wheeled spinners of good quality and I HATE the single spinners because they are not stable. I’m about to donate that bag and get a bag that has double wheels. As for hard clamshell vs soft flap, since I only use a hard checked for extended trips, I usually put it on the bed and unload it into drawers at my destination. I’ll carry a soft carry-on for either a week long trip or carrying items of immediate need or items that needs to be secured. Since it is short, unpacking isn’t necessary.
I was totally impressed with friends from Sweden who traveled to Oregon with a backpack each! Well, the Mrs had a small purse also. But OMG I couldn’t believe it. They were here 2 weeks. I never even noticed that she wore several items over. When we helped them get ready to leave, that’s when I found out about the backpacks. Amazing!
Great video and what to look for. I have an Eddie Bauer duffel is is a little fatter than a carry on but holds an amazing amount. It has serviced me for me for more than 20 yrs. I don’t do frequent trips one or two per yr to put my 😂experience in perspective. It’s good looking and very easy to spot on the luggage conveyer belt. Love it!
I use two Travelon under-seat cases (they're stackable) when traveling for a 10-18 day trip. They're lightweight and even when fully packed they're easy to stow in the overhead bins.
Thank you for the video 👍 I travel often, and I never have a check in bag. I use my Tumi under seat carry-on and a matching Henri Bendel Jetsetter Backpack. I put a mini wallet in there and an extra plastic bag for snacks etc. I also have the popular Delsi Chatelet paris champagne luggage BUT... they aren't as convenient. There are some states that have the smallest planes and even the Delsi carry-on has to go in the belly of the plane bc the space is so limited. I also have the LV 55, nope too big also. The 45 too small and uncomfortable. Plus it just makes you a target depending on the city you travel too. I have a Lucas carry-on i bought at a Goodwill when I was in college, and its still one of my faves. Very well made. Comfort and space.
Thanks Laurie! Really enjoyed and learned from this video! Thank you. Oh is your bag the Aubergine or solar rose? It looked like the solar rose. Thanks!
These are good tips for America bc they are not strict about carryons, but international travel, they are a lot stricter about carryons size and weight.
HI LAURIE, I love your videos. I consider weight very highly. I literally weighed the suitcases the store. As I age, I own that the carrying and rolling luggage fatigues me and therefore decreases my joy. I plan on taking one carryon, a 6 lb hard shell, and just a purse, to Paris.
I travel a lot for work and I have an even-split hardshell. I've noticed a lot of hotels are undergoing renovation and started to use uni-piece furniture design that has a middle area for luggage. They are wide and long enough to open up my 25" checked bag without issue. This is becoming very common. In hotels without this, I tend to request a second bed and leave the hardshell opened, sitting on the bed. I generally wipe down my luggage before doing that and I also make sure my wheels hang off the bed and do not touch the bedding (I do my best now to dirty up the bed for the housekeeping staff).
I just was in a hotel this week that had a board type area for our bags. My husband and every flight attendant would tell you not to put luggage on a bed for bed bugs. They jump.
Osprey Porter 46 backpack is my carry-on bag. I find a backpack is much easier to carry through busy airports than a wheeled bag. It also fits in the overhead bin much easier too. Osprey Day Lite works well for Personal item. I never do checked bags, even for international travel.
I just bought my first hard sided carryon suitcase by Vera Bradley. It has two sections and both flaps have pockets, one full, one has two small pockets. The one flap has compression straps, the other zippers. It also has a pouch for a phone charger so you can charge your phone. I will buy a cover for it so it stays pretty.
I have the Ricardo carry-on soft side. I don’t remember when I bought it. Probably 5 or 6 years ago. I’ve made quite a few trips overseas and across country. I’ve occasionally checked it as well. It has a good expansion that I use if I buy things on the trip. It still looks really good and no problems with the hardware or spinner wheels.
I live in Europe and there are many small aircraft and lots of steps to lug the carryon up and down. I love the wheeled backpack types that allow you to carry the bag as a backpack when you are going up and down the many stairs.
With my older luggage I still found at hotel with carpet I struggled to push/pull my luggage and that is why I decided it was time buy new with better wheels
Hello! Love your videos! Im in Houston and we are flying out of Hobby! I just got my husband and I “under the seat bags” by London Fog and I’m hoping they truly fit under the seat. The measurements for a personal item allowed on Southwest is 16.25” (L) + 13.5” (W) + 8” (H) I measured the bags and the width is 1/2 inch wider than the London fog measurements on their website. 15.5" x 13.5" x 8" Do you recommend that I take the luggage to Hobby and measure the bags at the bag checker or just return thee item? Thank you!
Thank you Laurie! We are searching for an international trip and Condor has a height restriction of 20" and the Skyway is 21.6" (in your opinion would this work.?). . The soft sided Riccardo has a depth of 9.5" and Condor's limit is 7.8". Do you have a recommendation for a soft sided or hard sided carry on that matches oversea airlines requirements? Thank you!
Are you saying your favorite all time is the Level8 hard sided spinner? I am considering TravelPro. Could you please explain what makes the Level8 better?
Like I mentioned, the blue level8 held more shoes. And it's spinner. I loved that 2 wheeled TravelPro but I must have 4 wheels now. Both great companies.
Thank you so much for your ideas! We were excited about ordering the Level 8 dark pink one that you showcase here , however, it does not seem to exist at this time. I called Level 8 and they said they only have one expandable suitcase and that is the GRACE style on Amazon (not on their website.) She thinks that they do not carry it anymore. The Grace has a huge computer pocket that we do not need. Do you have another suggestion for a suitcase for Europe that is expandable?
Lauri, Here is my hack for hotel luggage racks. Ask the front desk for extra towels or blanket. Then build a pad the height of the rod in the back of most luggage racks that are common in hotels. Once you get a flat base you can open your double sized suitcase. Push it against the wall on the non-rod side and you have stability. Been working like a charm for us. Happy Travels.
Hey Laurie! I was watching your video today and I have a question please. This video is a about a year and half old and I'm wondering if you recommendations for carry on luggage have changed. I am in the market for a new carry on bag. My two wheel swiss army has seen it's better days. What do you recommend with spinner wheels with the most capacity?
Good information! I like a suitcase with a grab handle on the bottom. They are hard to find. Most Travelpro bags have one. Recently bought a Kenneth Cole hardside with one also.
Laurie, first great videos, think I have binged most of them these last few days. I was all set to buy a TravelPro because I have always had soft-sided carry ones but looking at the Level 8 spinner now I am confused about which one to get. Never had a hard side in all my years of travel. Looking to upgrade my TJMax one that I have had for 4 years, I travel both domestically and internationally several times a year. Thoughts on jumping over to the hard-side carry-on wagon?
Yess!! This is just what I needed. Thank you lots! I've always been on team soft side... but my last suitcase went mouldy (ha ha) so I'm thinking of getting a hard shell suitcase. :-)
Ever since my luggage was lost, I travel carry on only … roller board because of the cobblestone streets in Europe, but recently got a couple of Unitravel (16 & 20”) spinners (that I looove!). But now I have a question … any tips (other than lying the suitcase on its side) when traveling in trains to stop the spinners from rolling away from you?
My Ricardo trolley handle glides perfectly when empty. However, it gets stuck when full. I still like Ricardo because they stand behind their product even when the small print says they don’t replace when airports “eat” your luggage. That was my experience.

Whenever I click on the packing list it takes my name and email and says "thanks for subscribing" but doesn't give the actual packing list.
Those are great tips for future trips!!
I used my Vera Bradley weekender last weekend. I’ve had it for years and love it!
I have a TravelPro International also and love it. I do find it difficult for shoes though, sandals no problem.
Laurie your dog is so patient during the filming of your videos. It can't be easy for the darling to have to share you with your viewers.
It's going to be dreadful when he dies b/c I love him so.
the feature I really like, and only half of the suitcases in my household have it, is a strap that buckles onto itself by the top handle of the suitcase. this buckles around the pull up handle of another suitcase, and you can pull as many as you need like a train behind you. as the designated porter in my household, this makes my job so much easier than trying to herd free range spinners around.
Amen to that! I will never go back to spinner wheels ever again.
Laurie ! You’ve taken me from being a chronic overpacker to having done my first carry on only 6 day trip !!! Thank you so much for all the great tips !
Oh my goodness! You did the work though.
Can you tell me more about the deal? I want to keep an eye out?
Totally agree about the double sided, open-like-a-book luggage. I borrowed one to visit my best friend who lives out of state. She had a lovely luggage rack for me to use, but the suitcase would not fit! For my entire visit, my suitcase stayed opened on the bedroom floor. Inconvenient and unsightly.
Yep, I turned my luggage rack and that helped somewhat.
True
My number 1 consideration as well, with 7kg limit, any luggage more than 2.3kg (or about 5 lb) failed the light weight test. All these non-removable extra pockets, organiser adds weight.
I bought my TravelPro soft side carryon spinner in 21” as well as the matching TravelPro personal item bag based on reviews on this channel. I’ve loved it for a year and will never check a bag again. I’m also using compression packs recommended here. I can easily pack for 10-12 days. Just got back from Pebble Beach having a great time.
Very nice! They help so much!
Yes I love soft shell carry on luggage. I almost feel like the hard shell already takes up more space on its own because of its structure
Thanks for sharing!!
My little 10 yr old VisionAir Spinner carryon had a rough trip to and from Grand Rapids and Des Moines this summer :(
I rewatched this video before shopping for a replacement for an upcoming trip this fall.
Yay, great find! I hope it works well for ya and sounds like it should since you checked the features.
I am not sure how many times I watched this😂
I bought the Quince and Level 8 carry on for my Swiss trip this next couple months. Quince is going back because of the unstable handle. LEVEL 8 is a keeper. THANK YOU F9R THE TIPS!
Hope you enjoy it!
So I have not yet had the means to travel but I have family members that are and have recommended them to watch your videos! Thanks for the updates!
Thank you.
Ooh, that would be interesting.
I almost got it b/c I like soft-sided.
Have fun! I love their crew one that is larger than a carry-on too.
A 24" case which is so heavy you can hardly lift it should never be allowed as carry on!
@@michaeltb1358 - She said it was for a road trip.
Thanks Michelle!
22” Eagle Creek Load Warrior soft sided weighs @4#. Love it!
Eagle Creek is the most durable luggage on the planet. UNFORTUNATELY I think they went out of business.🙄
Nope, they're still up and running, alive and well.
How do you manage the weight limitations. Australia has a 7kg carryon limit and with carry-ons around 3kg it doesn’t leave a lot of packing weight
That is the only reason I am glad I do not live there is their strict luggage restrictions.
You don't! U pay.weights are too low.just pay
I have only 7kg too and a 55cm x 38cm x 20cm size allowance.
I have three Vera Bradley suitcase and love them, good quality and colorful and can spot it from afar
A useful thing I have seen in Japanese suitcases is a brake. It pops out when you push a button. It means if you are anywhere you don't want to your case to roll away (a train, a hill), you can stop it rolling!
Cool...
Laurie, you are doing a great job. I fly like you do, standby, and your information is on point. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!!
Thank you !
Haha I hear ya!
What a GREAT video! Your channel is becoming one of my FAAAVES!!! Good job 👏👏👏
Yay! Thank you!
My favorite suitcase is soft with spinner wheels built in the suitcase makes it sturdier ❤ great video as always
Actually stuffing your empty luggage with your Costco haul is also a great tip for those with tiny condos that have minimal storage. Thanks for the reviews & love your family pic with your son in the back seat trying to hide. So typical!
Haha thanks
I always love your comparison videos Laurie, you talk about the features real people really want. May I ask your candid opinion of the Away rolling carry on?
Hi, I have never tried theirs but looks great, along with the Monos (which is Canadian I think)
Thanks for sharing!
Oh so exciting! Wow I seriously am impressed and happy for you.
Thanks for persevering!! Such great tips, as always!!! 🤩
Thanks for watching!
I purchased a fabulous light carry on from it luggage - 4lbs, handle runs on the outside edges instead of down the middle, loads of space with 2 outside pockets. It’s a soft side. Purchased it on Amazon Canada! Looking forward to the European Christmas markets with it!
Travelpro - we love the spinner and rollaboard suitcases!
We have for 20 years too!
I am so glad you found one you love! Thanks so much.
Say hello to "mama and them" ~
Haha you're so cute.
Thank you for these excellent tips! I noticed this video is 9 months old. Just wondering if there are updated/newer carry-on suitcases you'd recommend --or stick with the ones in this video?
I love your sweet little dog. Makes your videos even more enjoyable ❤
Laurie, your tips are invaluable! And your precious dog is so cute; I'm in love.
Glad you think so!
I have the 80/20 hardwired luggage & love it because it opens more like a traditional suitcase on a luggage rack
Hardsided
Wow wow I am so impressed you packed that many items in a carry-on suitcase! Congrats!
My carry on has a Trolley sleeve and it come in handy so much when traveling with multiple bags.
Yes that is a great feature!
Yay yes it’s a great brand from what we have seen
Thank you and I ordered the level 8 spinner 😅! It’s going to be usef gor Southeast Asia- can’t wait to test it out
Hope you enjoy it! Return it if you do not love it. I have found it’s the best for overseas too. Now I have their textured one too.
I can tell you love what you do ❤
Thank you again!
What did you end up with,? I am going to Israel and France for 16 days
Lol.
Spinner wheels are awesome!
I am excited that you got the under seat bag I suggested. I just love mine😘
Sometimes if you flip the luggage rack around, so that the side that comes up is toward you, then place the spinner so that the wheels is away from you, sometimes it works. Awesome vid!!!
I see what you mean.
Yes pros and cons for hard-sided.
You can lay the suitcase the other way on those luggage racks, with the top,and bottom along the solid metal rails. I still don't prefer them because of the space they take when opened and laid out like a book. Much easier, for me, to just lift the "lid" of a softside and lean it against the wall.
I have to buy a new suitcase for my forthcoming trip to the Holy land...so thankful for this video😃
Hi hope this gave you some ideas! I think the Samsonite one is sold out but pay attention to my fave one near the end for cobblestone roads.
i’m hooked on your videos -thank you so very much!
You are so welcome!
Amazing!
Wow!
Thank you for the video 👍
I travel often, and I never have a check in bag.
That is amazing that your carry on lasted that long. Must have had great features!
Great video Laurie! Very informative and helpful!!
Thanks!
Thank you! I love your videos. Do you have a video with tips for travelling with a CPAP machine? ❤🇨🇦
Hi, but they do not count as any type of luggage in the US. Google your airline.
Great question! I have one, too.
Have a beautiful, lightweight trip!!
All well said. Nothing else to ad. I really love your videos ❤
You're the best!
By the way. I’m wearing my airplane mode on sweater next month 😝
@@anicuba9192 I'm so grateful Ani!
You are adorable!! I love watching your videos.
Yay glad you like it!
Yay! Great to pass along.
Thank you Laurie! Very helpful as always ❤
Glad it was helpful!
The measurements for a personal item allowed on Southwest is 16.25” (L) + 13.5” (W) + 8” (H)
I measured the bags and the width is 1/2 inch wider than the London fog measurements on their website. 15.5" x 13.5" x 8"
Do you recommend that I take the luggage to Hobby and measure the bags at the bag checker or just return thee item?
Thank you!
I just got the Blue Hardshell you recommended, used it few weeks ago on a trip, love it! getting another
Great to hear from someone else too! Yay
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie Thanks,
I love all your videos!
I love it-so turn it around if it has that lip?

Hey Laurie! I was watching your video today and I have a question please. This video is a about a year and half old and I'm wondering if you recommendations for carry on luggage have changed. I am in the market for a new carry on bag. My two wheel swiss army has seen it's better days. What do you recommend with spinner wheels with the most capacity?
Love your videos, such good information!
Good information! I like a suitcase with a grab handle on the bottom. They are hard to find. Most Travelpro bags have one. Recently bought a Kenneth Cole hardside with one also.
So true!
It took me 2 trips to fall in love with hards sided. I definitely love spinner wheels
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie Yes!! I am always envious of people wheeling their suitcases like that, mine just has two wheels. 😅
Hi, I would just prop my foot under the edge like you would with a rubber wedge.
You always have such great tips!
Glad you like them!
My Ricardo trolley handle glides perfectly when empty. However, it gets stuck when full. I still like Ricardo because they stand behind their product even when the small print says they don’t replace when airports “eat” your luggage. That was my experience.
