At least with Looney Tunes, it's more understandable, considering the sheer number of shorts there are. Like you said there's 1000 of them (technically slightly more, if you count the handful of the post-Golden Age shorts). Plus, some of those shorts have content that wouldn't fly today, such as the Censored 11. The best you can do is get all 6 volumes of the Golden Collection (which you can get bundled together) and the Collector's Choice Blu-Ray sets they've been putting out lately.

@PhillyTTT What are you working through on Plex?
If you Google the show name with Plex next to it, you'll get the correct naming order...
With certain shows you need to create sub folders for specials. So for example, using a real old sitcom as an example, I'd title the specials of Last of the Summer Wine as 'Last of the Summer Wine e01' for the first special on Plex's server listing.
Outside of that, it would be 'Last of The Summer Wine s01e01' for a normal episode.
      Hope that helps!

    • @andyc6542
      @andyc6542 3 місяці тому

@PhillyTTT the way I do it (not sure if it makes much difference), is to create a main folder titled as the shows name then subfolders for each series or season.

I get the feeling that the reason why so many modern DVD/Blu-Ray releases are so bad, is because they want to force people into digital media instead. I wouldn't be shocked if these phsycial releases being bad is done on purpose.

It should also be properly done by Paramount, not just them reusing the discs from the Lionsgate release. It reminds me of those bootleg Star Wars: The Complete Saga DVD sets where it's just the DVDs from the older releases of the Star Wars Original & Prequel trilogies before 2011, but I think Paramount made that official, they literally took the discs from the Lionsgate release and placed it in their case. They did what the bootleggers did and made it official.

Seeing stains and stand-in marks on the carpet, black paper taped over the LCARS screens that was done originally to prevent the camera being seen in the reflections, they changed the aspect ratio so occasionally you can see boom mics popping in and out of view above the actors heads, etc.

At least TMNT got to keep it's special features between companies. The Real Ghostbusters DVD collection from 2009 was done with Time Life/Sony, but future releases by Sony are taken from different masters or just lazy re-releases don't have anything but the episodes. Same with He-Man, the original boxset was loaded and every US release since has been missing features.

I can attest. I myself have the He-Man complete series DVD box set from BCI Eclipse (which at one point was affiliated with Funimation), and it was decked with every bell and whistle you could imagine: documentaries, art cards, fun facts, and a bunch of interactive stuff. I also have a later “best of” He-Man DVD from Mill Creek, and that had absolutely zero special features.

The modern DVDs of The Real Ghostbusters also have the issue of cramming 12 to 13 episodes onto a single disc which hurts the image quality. Thank God, I own the Timelife set. I only own the modern Sony DVD set for some of the different episode masters. However on the DVD versions of Volumes 1-5 the episode title cards have been removed and replaced with a forced subtitle telling you what the title is. The commerical bumpers have also been removed. Lastly, the modern releases of the show are missing many episodes. With the DVDs you get 111/140 and with Digital you get 116/140. (neither of the modern releases have the Slimer! cartoons)

I've never owned the full DVD box set for the original 🐢 turtles show (87) but I feel the need for quality here. Appreciate your input. They definitely treat the old show like garbage. I'm more of a Turtles (03) guy and I haven't owned that on DVD either. I still do enjoy the FreeRuns of the old show and do plan to own the 2003 box set by the end of the year. But I do sincerely appreciate the passion for this release and I do hope companies treat the property with the respect they deserve in future iterations.

I was considering picking this up. I do have the Lionsgate release. Also, you talked about the case this set comes in. Well, the Lionsgate release uses the exact same abomination of a case. This Paramount release is 1:1 the same as the Lionsgate set, except for different boxart. And the labels on my discs are really dark for some reason.
Although to be fair, I think reprints of the Lionsgate discs was probably the best-case scenario here. Because if Paramount's 2003 boxset is anything to go by, then new DVDs made from new masters would probably leave a lot to be desired. Black bars burned into the side of the image, smeary, hazy, fuzzy shots. Episodes being censored, incomplete Turtles Forever, still. If they made new DVDs, then I suspect it would have been a similar story here.
Either way, thanks for making this review. At least I know not to waste my money on it now. Still crazy to think that these DVDs are still being printed after 20 years!

For the record, the episode order on the DVDs, except season 5, was based off of the episode guide on the old "official" ninja turtles website. This was considered to be the "official" order at the time. Though I'm not even sure you can trust the paramount plus air dates. Season 3 especially aired on many different networks across the US and many people who taped episodes back then had them in different orders. Who knows though. Probably information that is just lost to time. Also, the "never before seen" episodes on the season 1 disc, at the time, one of the people who worked on the DVDs claimed it was that those episodes didn't air in all regions.

The way Paramount handled these discs reminds me of how Lionsgate’s re-releases of HiT Entertainment DVDs would keep their old labels with the 20th Century Fox logo on them (or the Anchor Bay Entertainment logo in the case of 95% of their Thomas & Friends re-releases). Funnily enough, however, when Universal began reprinting those same DVDs in 2014, they actually went through the trouble of authoring new discs - not just with different labels, but also updated trailers, and sometimes even the removal of their old special features (which would make sense if they were just DVD-Rom extras that obviously don’t work anymore, but if those extras were genuinely substantial material…).

I think it’s more a matter of when the DVDs were done and how much effort they were willing to put in; the South Park season sets were relatively new in the mid-2000s, whereas these TMNT DVDs range from 10-20 years old, and Paramount just sees fit to reuse them as is. Not excusing that, and I think they should’ve at least revised the labels for this new set.

Nick's got a weird case of these reprints with Paramount.
Their Hey Arnold Boxset has Seasons 2-4 reprinted from Shout Factory (same with Rocko's Modern Life)
SpongeBob's Next and More 100 Epsiodes just reprint the Seasons 6-13 DVDs when the First 100 Episodes was an original anniversary thing in 2009. Paramount's always real weird. But never have I seen them DIRECTLY REUSE THE DISCS DOWN THE ART, HUH!?

I had noticed this new release, and me and a friend had been talking about getting it, as it was a set I had been putting off getting since I started collecting physical media, and had really wanted the one that came in the Turtle Van. It sucks to hear that even with all these re-releases that the same issues still plague the set, and that not one of them have corrected the issues. Unfortunately I don't have trust in many streaming platforms given the nature of them and how they can just yank shows whenever they feel like, so for someone like me it seems the headache of piecing the episodes together properly is the only solution. But hey, the heads up is appreciated!

I'd argue the 2003 complete series set was worse because it's new transfers actually looked worse then the ones on the old 4Kids DVDs and it didn't have the uncut version of Turtles Forever(which did come out on DVD in the UK and Australia so Paramount has no excuse for that one)sure the episodes are all in order but they fucked up the aspect ratio so much it hardly matters. Sometimes a new transfer is worse then just reusing an old one, we also saw that on the very flawed Porky Pig's 101 DVD release which had a new worse looking transfer of one of the black and white Porky's shorts that looked considerably better when it was released on the Golden Collection.

Given how Streaming Services has been becoming even more of a big deal in this decade then how they were in the 2010s, it’s clear that DVDs are just dead compared to BluRays.
A lot of modern DVDs don’t usually contain special features and exciting behind the scenes stuff, and it’s frustrating that we get a complete series DVD of a famous cartoon from the 80s, instead of getting a Blu-Ray box set.

And in fairness, the 2004 release of the first season, the 4 bonus "unaired" episodes actually didn't air everywhere in the USA, or in some countries so in a way for some territories they were unaired.

But of course, we know that's because in order to fix the episode order or use new masters, they would have to entirely redo the discs from scratch along with having to change what's listed on the episode selection screen(s) which they are too lazy to do. So that's why the 2018 re-release and now the 2023 re-release just repackage the same old discs with all of the existing problems left intact.

You pretty much covered it all, but yeah, the maddening thing about this release is that they could've improved it over the previous one. Killer part is if they remade it from the ground up and did it the right way, it would still be a 23 disc set.
Accounting for all 193 episodes here:
    - 9 episodes per disc from discs 1-18 which would be the first 162
    - disc 19 have 7 episodes which stops at episode 169
    - discs 20-22 be the final 3 seasons each since each one of those is 8 episodes.
(I'm suggesting it this way to separate the red sky seasons and to keep it organized that way)
    - disc 23 be the previous special features, minus the duplicate episodes of course (and assuming having special features would really matter?)
To address the cases, the one the 2003 set came in is the epik pak, whereas the stacked discs pack is called mega pak. But yeah the cases are maddening as well, considering the epik paks can hold up to 24 discs at most, and when it's an odd number of discs, at least one side of the trays would only have one disc hub, so yeah, they really screwed this one up. Which is why the Nickelodeon complete series release sucks as well because that could've easily been in a 20 disc epik pak case, but they put that one in a mega pak instead.

Only reason this was re released was for a new audience discovering it. Thats really it. Thats always been tricky especially in season 4 as some episodes aired on saturdays and others week days. One episode, "the cufflink caper" aired in prime time right before the very first episode of "tiny toons adventures" the other daily episodes where syndicated. They aired on WPMT FOX 43 for us 1989-1990 at 3:30-4:00 mon-friday. Beginning in season 5 it was all Saturday mornings. So season 3-4 are the trickiest considering the regional difference in air times and stations and the partial saturday morning exclusives during 1990-1991. And those where massive seasons

Wow, that is some IMPRESSIVE half-assing on Paramount's part. I assumed that they'd be the same discs as the Lionsgate release given the number of them and the cheap price of the set, but the EXACT SAME DISC LABELS, too?? Oh well, at least the casual DVD-buying public of 2024 won't have to miss out on ads for TMNT Fast Forward airings on a defunct kids block, 2011's hot new Power Rangers series, that one animated Thor movie where he has a sword, William Shatner's Gotta Catch Santa Claus, and, of course, other TMNT DVD releases that are completely redundant because they're already part of the set.
Honestly, I wouldn't bother agonizing about the exact episode order for most of this show while rewatching it. I marathoned it a couple years back, and the only episodes that I bothered switching discs for were the European Vacation arc, Planet of the Turtleoids, and Once Upon a Time Machine. (Just because Plan 6 from Outer Space leads directly into the former and the latter two feature characters that either first appear in or reappear in other episodes.) The show is so largely episodic that the only real thing that might seem weird is the Technodrome occasionally being in a different location. It's definitely not worth sitting through that logo constantly in pursuit of perfect airing order. 😅
