  • This is a video in two parts that explains how a patient recovers after bowel surgery. Part 1 explains the preparation for surgery and recovery in hospital after bowel surgery. Part 2 gives useful advice on being discharged.
This video was prepared with the help of an educational grant from Coloplast UK. We hope patients will find this useful in preparing them for a bowel operation.

Very helpful for patients to remind them of necessary precautions.

2 weeks post op, colon resection, 12 inches of colon taken out, done with davinci. Most painful period I have ever experienced and it's been 2weeks. Just starting to eat normal foods and learning what works and what doesn't. Thank you to the evil gastroenterologist/colorectal surgeon who did not deal with this several years ago. Can't wait to sign the paperwork.

It’s been 2.5 weeks and it still hurts to move a bowel and also to urinate. Any advice? Is it normal to have pain urinating?

I am three weeks post op..18mm Sigmoid resection. Done with Da Vinci Robot. 5 tiny incisions with no pain what so ever, but the larger incision where the surgeon took out the diseased colon is still very painful. It feels like I have been kicked by a horse. I can't walk for long and the longer I stand the more painful it becomes. It wasn't like this when I was in the hospital so I am wondering how much longer before I will be pain free? Saw my surgeon yesterday, and she tells me this is normal due to the internal stitches holding the exit wound together. I can't bear this pain and want it to go away. She gave me percocet, but it makes me vomit, so I can't take it.

Hiya can you give me some advice on taking a shower? I am going for a colon surgery this coming week. After the surgery they are going to stitch me up. Do I need to cover up the stiches or just shower as normal. Thanks

How do you know you're eating right? No animal products, no processed foods and a B12 supplement

I had colon surgery and my appetite took about 3-4 months to get back to normal. Lost over 30 lbs. Those nutritional drinks they mention were not good for me. Doctor prescribed apple sauce, fruit, fruit yogurt, juices, Ensure, Gatorade = sugar! Once I stopped this sugar crap (at about 2 months into recovery) and added a good quality probiotic, I started to be able to eat more normally. No more diarrhea. Now it is 8 mos. healing. I have a ravenous appetite and am struggling not to eat everything in site! I have gained back 10 lbs.

@AmayaWiseWoman Hello, my mom is having surgery in 2 weeks, and I'm doing my research. was wondering what exactly did you mean by "good quality probiotic" ?
