  • "Web 2.0" in just under 5 minutes.
    mediatedculture...
This is a slightly revised and cleaned up version of the video that was featured on UA-cam in February 2007.
I considered releasing it as an "eternal beta" in true Web 2.0 style, but decided to let it stand as is and start working on future projects. Many of my future videos will address the last 30 seconds of this video (the "rethink ..." part).
Thank you all for the helpful comments on the earlier draft. It has been a great experience to connect with so many people interested in
    similar issues.
Once again, there are higher quality versions available for download:
    Windows Media File (55 MB):
    www.mediafire.c...
    Quicktime File (96 MB):
    www.mediafire.c...
Mojiti Version (for comments, translations, etc.):
    mojiti.com/kan/...
This work is licensed under a Creative Commons
Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License. So you are welcome to download it, share it, even change it, just as long as you give me some credit and you don't sell it or use it to sell anything. I received many more positive comments than negative about the song choice (great work Deus!), but if you are one of those who does not like the song just download the video and change the audio track to your liking.
The video was created by me (Michael Wesch), working alone from my house in St. George, Kansas. I used CamStudio for the screen captures and Sony Vegas for the panning/cropping/zooming animations. Someday I might make a video tutorial for those who are interested.

This was such a profound video back then... and still hits today, but with more understanding of just what we were in for... and what is still to come. It's listening to that song "Everybody's free to wear sunscreen" again today.

This video discusses the role of digital text and its potentialities. Unlike writing on paper text, digital text becomes something more flexible, changeable, which can promote a world of possibilities and where the hypertext brings the possibility of sharing, of a collaborative construction and of co-creation.
Where through a click an individual text is replaced by the collective and allows that the content and the format itself could be the subject of a review by a third party, who in replace can comment, question, share, enhance and change it.
Turns out to be the possibility for each of us to project something about yourself into the virtual environment and to make your mark in the virtual world.
Hypertext ultimately promote the globalization of ideas, content, knowledge, once it can be accessed without restrictions, both geographic and temporal, being stored in the ocean of the information present on the internet.

this is possibly one of the best user documentaries on the evolution of web and web 2.0. It's both awe inspiring and terrifying because once we've created a machine, what do we do when it wants more or what do we do when we want more and demand more from our simple machinery or even from our complex machines.

  • @reisa1015

I just showed this to my Media History college class, who were children when it was released 10yrs ago. It had a huge impact. I remember very well when I first saw it and how engaged and optimistic we were by the notion of 'Web 2.0' (Time magazine's person of the year in 2006 was 'You'). And yet today, we seem to have lost the fascination in the transformation of communications; how they work and have changed us and the ongoing impact on our lives. After watching this, it was like my student's suddenly saw the timeline and how we've arrived at the point where we are, with eyes permanently glued to our devices. This video is still as pertinent as ever, perhaps even more so 10 years on...
