One thing that I have always thought about is why no one, simply no one educates teenagers on how to love and be loved. I don't just mean sex education which is also equally important but just to know what healthy relationships look like , how they feel and mean. We cover every academic topic out there but why are relationships never considered worth discussing. It's one of most significant aspects of one's existence and totally left on kids to navigate through this on their own.

Just because something was 'acceptable' once, doesn't mean that we can't criticize it. Sati system, child marriage, etc were all acceptable in a certain time period, what makes some people think that we should embrace the fact that they were 'acceptable' or representing an era? They were still glorified. Certain crimes and immoral things were glorified. It'd the same as accepting the crimes done by people in past as normal. Something considered bad today, has been a bad thing since forever and we should not put our word weapons down just because they weren't considered bad in a "certain period of time".

Have been stalked, harassed, constantly stared at and groped by a 'friend' from college when I was really young and instead of warning him off, all my other friends asked me why I didn't like him back and tease him with my name as though anything in that entire equation was mutual. I had clearly told him I don't think about him as anything other than a friend. Had asked him if I had given any indication that I was interested and he replied in the negative. And YET that didn't deter him from acting the exact same way. Still, somehow, I was the 'heartless' person for rejecting him. The pressure was so much that all I could do was let it all slide as a joke and had started believing that maybe I was the one who was overreacting when in fact I had to bunk a couple of classes just to avoid being touched by him. All of us are doctors, by the way... so, yeah. education doesn't change anything and this entire "harass and stalk her and she'll fall in love with you" trope really needs to go. Movies and shows need to stop glorifying such disgusting acts.
Its very common among indian schools , i don't know why people think its funny and all but its even traumatizing even for boys.
The teasing shit needs to stop. "Friends" are supposed to have your back. It's never okay to dismiss someone feeling uncomfortable whatever the reason maybe.

I think that's why everyone loved jab we met so much when it came out...even in bollywood in early 2000s stalking=courting was the common theme or if it isn't stalking than the relationship had many misogynistic aspects (like guy casually slapping the girl,commenting on her clothes, lifestyle etc.)

I don't remember whole of the movie, but I remember and love that he was happy in her being happy, even if that meant losing her. Also he didn't go to Shimla to shoot his shot, he just wanted her to get back to her home safely.

Being a Tamilian all my childhood I grew up with movies like padikathavan and Sachin and at that time I was made to believe that there wasn't any issues in the movie and was entertainment but now seeing those I myself feel what bizzare things have I enjoyed in my childhood??? Yes. Movies were and are still sexist mostly. And the audience that is groomed by these movies has grown to think that women should be draped in a saree to be treated as one. I truly truly believe stalking girls and harassing woman culture in India is a product of movies. I am from a rural background, stalking and harassing girls was considered "cool" thanks to our role model heroes. Guys like me who were hesitating to do that were considered as beta male.

Personally, I have observed that Stalking was glorified and was not seen problematic in the Tamil Cinema Industry until 2014-2015. There were several movies which came upon that theme and moral policing in movies was prevalent during that time. However, due to the rise of new age directors in the last decade with their increased sensibilities stopped glorifying such madness and the audience too evolved. Earlier Movies which were glorified were seen from a new aspect and new movies which still stuck to the same concept was trashed and bashed, examples being movies like 'Remo' and 'Mr. Local'. Tamil Cinema Industry is now moving away from glorifying such concepts for good.
@UC83MJ9En056Msm1La6DPweg 7G Rainbow Colony too loomed over the same concept, however Director Selvaraghavan never glorified the concept of Stalking. In fact, the protagonist will be shamed for such actions. He will be viewed as a good for nothing person who will never amount to something. It is only when he turns into a new leaf after going through humiliations, he gets the attention of the girl. so the concept of Stalking and harrasment was actually trashed in the movie subtly, it was never shown in a heroic light.
The worse part about Mr.Local is that the Remo created the controversial stir on the topic of stalking that SK went on to state that he won't commit to such movies again but going to star in Mr.Local. Hypocrite much?!
@@abe6816 I guess that Mr. Local was already shot by the time that controversy took place and hence, the script couldn't be reshot or something. It is refreshing to see him move away from such concepts in his recent movies such as Namma Veetu Pillai, Hero. The upcoming Doctor Trailer too looks really good and seems to break away from his usual mantra of movies. So let's hope that he doesn't do such films anymore.
But unfortunately, body shaming and racism is still prevalent. Santhanam jokes mostly tend to body shaming. In Bigil(2019), Vijay fat shames and bullies a character in front of others in the pretext of 'motivation'! 😢

Well down here in south tv serials caused hell lot of clashes between mother and daughter in laws, wife and husbands. Max indian serials are based on kidnaps,tactics,rivaraly between in laws. This has to END they have done enough damage in middle class houses 🙄🙄. Govt/censor board has to take actions against such concepts.

Literally every woman giving their opinion would say that they hate being followed or continuously stared at, and regardless of all these complaints, people still think that these ways will steal our hearts ...i've had some guys (one of them esp) relentlessly staring at me no matter how many times I showed that I'm not interested and even angry glares (questioning only makes people tell me that I shouldn't take it seriously 😑)..and they still shamelessly continue to do so...it honestly only creeped me out rather than make me feel attracted to them

I have had similar experience. there was this moment when i was looking attractive (maybe??) and 2 supposedly cultured south Indian juveniles crossed the area and they stared at me amusingly and incessantly. I, being the impulsive self that i am expressed my discomfort with bad mouthing... And there response to it was... whats wrong with her..? they chuckled and left the place. According to them, i protesting their gaze was stupid, they were just admiring. Shouldnt admiration be more appealing than gawking, objectifying and making people feel uncomfortable?? I happened to watch few dubbed south indian movies recently and now i know why they thought the way they did.

Constant debates and conversations about sexism in Bollywood movies over the years has reduced such sexist portrayals and moral policing to a great extent in movies from recent years. Its not 100% eradicated, but its safe to say that at least 98% of recent popular films and web series shows are free of it. Such rigorous debates and conversations about content matter should happen within the South film industries as well. That's the only way change will happen, sliding it under the rug in the name of entertainment is not the solution.

@@tingtingball That's true, it will take a long way to achieve 100% equality for both actresses and actors. But you can also notice how in this recent decade itself there has been a noticeable drop in movies that glorify stalking, moral policing, rape victim marrying the rapist and other bullshit that was so popularly shown in films as recent as early 2000s. Meanwhile there has also been a subsequent surge in meaty and meaningful roles for actresses, wherein they can hold their own in the film alongside the male lead, and the popular women-centric films where women carry the film without any need of a male lead.
There has also been a noticeable rise in good number of movie/web series roles for actresses of the yester-years who don't get the 'young lead girl' roles anymore and have passed their peak. So as you can see the good changes outweigh the bad ones when it comes to women's representation and more successful women directors in recent years in Bollywood.
I agree there have been bad changes as well when it comes to sexualisation or when the actress's role is just of an eye candy for the male lead throughout the film, but even in this case such things are openly pointed out by critics and audience and duly criticised for it. There are still meaningful debates going on, so hopefully these bad changes will also get outweighed by good ones in the near future. We need more women directors and screenplay writers who will solve this mess by telling women's stories through their own eyes and not through a man's eyes.

Something from real life that I am prompted to talk about is the whole aspect of normalising stalking. I remember that when I was in my late teens, I initiated something by glancing over at this guy who was 20 from across the room. Ever since, he'd always stare at me from a distance and he literally constructed this whole 'affair' thing just based on staring at me from a distance. It was as if only the two of us knew about it, like he wanted to keep this some secret 'understanding' between us. I'm not just saying that this guy was checking me out, he was practically living and dwelling in a story where he'd watch me from a distance. Initially locking eyes with him felt so powerful, it was like this connection I never felt before, but since he never spoke even when I tried approaching him and didn't want to do anything about it, I eventually lost interest in him. However, he still didn't stop.
Although I only saw him occasionally, it went on for almost 5 years! He always stands at a distance to watch me, and at parties, he'd stand afar, hide or crouch behind the door and stare at me. I ignored all this too, until one day when he was again standing at a distance and staring at me when I started getting really annoyed. It went for a couple of minutes straight, and being under his surveillance felt like I had no escape. I wanted to be left alone, I wanted to escape his gaze, so I hid behind something for a minute or so hoping that he'd stop. However, even when I stepped out, he was still standing there, at a distance waiting for me to step out so he could still keep staring. Something about this feeling just made me nauseous, I felt sick and when I got into my car I couldn't stop crying. I didn't care to reason anymore, I didn't care if he's doing thing because he thought I was still in love with him but I gave this guy enough chances, 5 years of chances, before I finally realised that this made me feel trapped. I just wanted to escape from it.
People have told me "yeah but you initially loved him, so it's ok right?" No, staring for a couple of seconds to convey interest is fine, but if the other person lost interest in you and you still keep watching them from afar continuously, it is an unhealthy fixation and an obsession which is a form of stalking.
Yes I understood your concern as it is really happens in our society I too experienced that , I have only one thing to say sorry dear lets stay strong and move on . Next time try to speak up and solve with confidence . Being confident and facing is better than escaping because once I as a early teenager I used to just glance when I cross by at one uncle in park of my colony he used to do yoga exercises something just after 3 or 4 times and I regret like anything as he saw me .at first he tried and talked about like good person about studies fitness but I can't find his true intentions till he asked me to talk to his wife and daughter while I was passing by his house which is near my besties house I luckily escaped with just bad touch back hug . But after that he continues stare after that incident. I am very happy for escaping and shifting house as my parents are working. Imagine this horrible childhood never repeat a mistake like this even bastards like old people will haunt .after growing up now I want to fight against such situations for anyone.

Even I have faced when I was 14 and when I was 19 , I can tell how mentally exhausting it is , there is this unspoken fear embedded inside you ..at some point I imagine of killing them and ripping them because I was so stress and angry ..it's always remain in your mind , you cannot deviate your mind ..you feel ashamed and if you tell people they will laugh at you like this is something a joke and harmless gesture .one of my friend said oh dekho woh tumko dekh raha hai as if I should be proud of this since I becoming more desirable ...I can understand you very well

My situation isn't dangerous or anything, it was a guy I used to like, but because he continued doing this even after I stopped, it made me uncomfortable. Infact, I'm sure that even if I was still interested in him the aspect of standing afar and watching someone is obsessive and unhealthy regardless.
About the male gaze, it's true we women go through it every day of our lives. There's a dialogue in the Mumbai diaries 26/11 attacks series where Konkana sen is talking to doctor Oberoi who is fed up with his day going bad due to him being unable to save the lives of his patients after the attacks and seeing people die! Konkana looks at him and goes like 'what you are going through in this one whole day, we women go through this every day of our life!' honestly, I couldn't have agreed more.

They (Writer/Director/Screenplay writers) kind of assumed that forcing a girl, stalking a girl and blackmailing a girl is part of a heroism.

Absolutely agree with Vijay's films. I can't believe that I grew up watching his film Sachein as a cool romantic comedy. Same goes for Sivakasi (the public shaming of Asin), Minsara Kanna (where he lectures Khushboo that a woman can never be independent like a man. Khushboo has an eccentric characterization which is anyways a separate topic for discussion).
@Jammy, u need to watch 7G Rainbow Colony - the agony faced by the heroine Sonia Agarwal, has not been depicted better in any other mainstream commercial Tamizh film, due to the unabated stalking by the hero. It can be an ideal topic for ur next Mathlab kuch bhi episode.
Regarding Madhavan in Alaipayudhey, Karthik in Mouna Ragam - both being the most celebrated films of Mani Ratnam, yes, stalking was present. Though in Alaipayudhey, it can be argued that the script is such that Shalini responds to Madhavan's advances passively (she visits his house for the baby shower, smiles at him etc., but this in no way justifies the stalking), it was continuous pursuing and stalking in Mouna Ragam by Karthik despite repeated strong rejections from Revathy (unlike the case in Alaipayudhey). However, the bottomline is, to the general audience, stalking becomes a problem only when a ruffian like hero does it. It does not unfortunately appear to be a problem to the general audience when the hero who is doing this has a good personality. And in Mouna Ragam, Karthik is shown as a dashing handsome young man .
I don’t think however 7G glorified stalking. Most people were disgusted by the methods Kathir used to confess his love for Anitha and he himself alludes to the fact that he isn’t classy enough to give her a card with a rose and this is the love he knows.
The south indian film industry has had a very interesting development from the 2010's. I remember watching those movies as a kid and even then being appalled by some of the scenes. But over the past 5 to 7 years, the south indian industry, malayalam, tamil and telugu (my favorite being naveen polishetty), have developed greatly to give us some very compelling films. Perhaps it is telling of our growth as an audience that filmmakers are given platforms to make unique and interesting movies.

RHTDM was a super hit, but imagine Saif's character was made the villain just because he was a NRI and was to marry Dia. However Maddy's character who was a fake, impersonator, stalker and had anger issues was the hero and the girl falls for her. The basic values are flawed..... 🤔🤔🤔

the movies which we used to love watching in our childhood, as an adult I've realised that mostly they were cringeworthy to say the least. Be it govinda's movies of 1990s, DDLJ, kuch kuch hota hai,hum saath saath hai,dil toh pagal hai,hum dil de chuke sanam,judwaa,kal ho na ho, biwi no.1,raja Hindustani,pardes..., and the list goes on.

Being a vijay fan, I have to say Villu, Sivakasi, Kuruvi and many more have a problematic theme portraying certain social injustice as heroic. I hope he makes better decisions on his scripts and never revert back to an era of such idiotic scripts.

There is a deleted scene in master where JD(played by Vijay) defends a girl from being slut shamed after being sexually harassed and assaulted and goes off on the professors who say this is what happen to girls who wear skimpy clothes.
That shows how far Tamil cinema and Tamil directors have come and how far the audience have come. Hopefully this carries over to the future movies.

Sad part is, the baton has been passed on to every generation. All the movies of Sivakarthikeyan, this generation star who is compared to Vijay, have the exact storyline of a guy stalking and forcing a woman to fall in love with him. Vijay films for me have always been uncomfortable to watch. It's something I always had on TV growing up but could never really accept it. Everybody treated it like it was normal and heroic but it was just cringy and uncomfortable for me. Even now most Vijay films lack story and reality. The latest hits like master, bigil, mersal,etc were all just commercial masala which is a genre I believe shouldn't exist. Except for the charm and screen presence Vijay has I find it difficult to accept that he is a great actor. He does have some good films but I don't think he has grown as an actor.

I would like to see your review on a telugu film named Arya (2004) in which the lead actor keeps stalking and harassing the actress in every possible way to accept his love, and the worst part is that was a blockbuster in the year 2004, a path breaking film in Allu Arjun's career. This film left me brain dead and it stars one of my favourite actor Nani (Lead of Jersey which I adore)
Basically the premise is a Jobless guy falls in love with a girl, lies to his parents so they get personal loan to send him into the college that she is studying in, stalks her Gaslights her manipulate her basically every toxic behaviour you can think of he has it,
He drinks smokes and refuses to take any responsibility, when she asks him to quit smoking he says I was smoking before you came into my life you came later and I'm not leaving smoking for you bc that's how logic works I guess
The girl's father sets her marriage to another guy who is also in love with her and years ago he asked for her hand to her father, father replied you have to become something, so he became a police officer in few years got home and everything a couple requires for a healthy life came back to ask if she would marry him now and if she refuses he would go away and leave her alone AND HE IS THE FUCKING VILLAN OF THE MOVIE 😫😫😫
after the second act our hero refuses to change his life, refuses to get a job, or leave all the bad habbits of smoking and drinking that is being paid by his mother bc he is fucking jobless she decides to marry the officer, the officer realises at the wedding day that she still loves him so he goes to Nani offer him a job so he can marry the girl that officer is in love with( but he is the VILLAN) and now that he has a job he can also convince the girl's father, guess what our hero does he refuses the job that was practically given to him in his hand
By his logic He says he won't change bc this is the man she fall in love with and he wants be this guy for the rest of his life ( I was screaming into the screen in anger TU NALLA HAI CHUTIYE 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️)

In the film raanjhanaa dhanush has acted very well BUT the film glorifies stalking. The soundtrack is lovely but the amount of ppl who sympathize with Kundan is disturbing.

I always felt Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam is a deliberate sequel for Anjam in the mid 2000's with a twist wherein SRK's unfulfilled dream to marry Madhuri in Anjam came true through Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam. Coz SRK's borderline obsession disorder films also included Dar & Anjam as well other than Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam .
