    I love the fact that the moment he puts his arm around her, she doesn't bother brushing it away because as a conceited move star (in her mind) he'll probably keep trying. So instead she goes for something that is a lot more easily damaged: his large ego.

    As much as she talked about how painful and nerve-wracking this movie was for her, Debbie's actual personality shines through this character. That desperation to prove herself and survive wasn't just Kathy's character - that was Debbie.

  • @bronzenrule

    Debbie Reynold's performance in _Singin' in the Rain_ alongside the great Gene Kelly belies both her youth and experience as a dancer. The apple wouldn't fall far from the tree as, also at nineteen years of age, her daughter Carrie Fisher would more than hold her own alongside older and more experienced co-stars, in her own break-out role. RIP America's Sweetheart and her Princess Leia.

      So true. Two great actresses such a loss. I don't think Debbie could handle the death of her daughter died of a broken heart even though she died from a stroke. So sad to lose them both but thankful we have UA-cam and their movies are also on DVD. So we can still watch them.

    My favorite part comes when he playfully tries to intimidate her, and she then reads him the riot act before giving him a shove.
    Maybe it's because it's been only several hours since Reynold's daughter passed away, but there's something about that kind of intense back-at-you she gives Kelly, that reminds me a bit of how Fisher bantered with Ford.

    • @captlanc
      @captlanc 8 років тому +12

      80MWH You wrote it was only hours since her daughter passed away, it's sad that it would be only hours before Debbie herself, passed away too. I thought she had released such a graceful statement about the public's concerns of Carrie's death. It's not until she passed away so soon after that I realized how much pain it must have brought her, at such an age, to lose her beloved daughter, and so abruptly too. Carrie was the troubled daughter, and through interviews alone, you could see that Debbie had always worried about her. How she had wanted her to be happy, how proud she was of her daughter for her strength, her intellect, her wit. She always spoke fondly or how fast Carrie was, how she could invent words of her own that held their unique meanings. She tried to understand her, to truly understand her, and not just understand her in her own way. I could not even imagine how devastating it was for her, losing that one child she sought to protect on every step of the way. They didn't even get to spend Christmas together (Carrie was in a coma since 23rd). I'm not particularly religious, but I really do hope there is an afterlife they could go, and Debbie would be able to find her daughter in there.

      squallofreeves Broken Heart Syndrome. You see the same thing in married couples who have been together for decades; the bond between them is so strong that often when one dies the other follows shortly after. In this case, the mother-daughter bond was equally strong. Safe passage to them both.

  • @hebneh
    @hebneh 12 років тому +32

    I really enjoy the interplay between the two in this scene. The changes that they project so successfully are subtle, but very recognizable. She's scared, then sympathetic, then wary and ultimately scornful as he shifts from being genuine to a bit sleazy.
    In real life, Debbie was still very young and new to movies, and Gene was condescending and stern with her. He was annoyed that she had so little experience. But fortunately, none of his attitude or her inexperience shows.
