      I was at Marine Air Base in Futema in 1967/68. We lived in a long squad bay but it was sectioned off in cubicles with 2 of us per cube. It was better than one big open squad bay. We had nasans who came in 5 days a week. They did some small amount of cleaning, sewed on chevrons, but mostly sat around giggling and jabbering in Japanese. We had a 6-day workweek repairing war damaged electronics equipment that was sent up from Vietnam. Shortly after I left the Japanese took back control of the island. It was great duty. Much better than stateside.

      I was at Camp Hansen (9th Marines) in 1991-92 and we had brand new barracks that looked exactly like this.

    Those were the good old days, the thing I remember were the Marines that were about to rotate saying.... What kind of bees don't fly and the other Marines would say in unison, New bees. It was all good. Semper Fidelis !

    I was on Okinawa for parts of 1971 and 1972. 3/12 155 Howitzers. Was there when the island was transitioned back to the Japanese in 1972. We lived in Quonset huts at Camp Hague. Good times, fond memories.

      I was stationed at Camp Foster Aug 74 to Sep 75. Looks like a lot of changes since I was there. We lived in 40 men in a open squad bay.
      When I made Sgt at Camp LeJeune it was nice to live in an area for Sgt. Single racks no double racks. Semper Fi, Long Live the Legend of Chesty Puller

    Not like this in the Old Corps. In 1963 many were in Quonset Huts, at best a shared bunk bed in a squad bay separated from the beds on either side by double wall lockers. Personal storage was a double wall locker and a footlocker stored under the bed. Heads shared with one or two of the four duty sections. Need I add we used iron sights? Semper Fi, it's still the Green Machine and gets the job done :)

    I was at Camp Schwab up north. I used to do midnight runs down to Kinville and bang mamasans outside Camp Hansen and stroll whisper alley down by gate 2 street. I’m planning a trip back there to relive my past. I wonder if they’ll let me see my old room in the barracks.

    • @Skaterlunatic
      @Skaterlunatic  2 роки тому +4

      I liked Oki a lot, and it got way better once I got a car out here to travel around Island, COVID is taken way more seriously out here than the states and usually we follow the Japanese Government if they want things to be strict or not, right now things are pretty laid back, just wear a mask off base is all.

    • @tajwortham
      @tajwortham 2 роки тому +1

      Dope! I’m getting ready to ship soon and Oki is on my radar. Is there nightlife at all? And how easy is it to get to mainland? Appreciate you replying!

    • @Skaterlunatic
      @Skaterlunatic  2 роки тому +4

      @@tajwortham there is definitely a night life here, just don't go to places black-listed or stay off base during curfew hours and you will be fine, I just don't like to party personally so I don't know too many locations. It's very easy to get to Mainland, you can go on a 72 or 96 too if you want, but to get a really good experience I would take 1 or 2 weeks off and go, it's usually only around $150 for round trip tickets.

I don't think that the camp commander had it that nice, just saying. Shit we didn't even have screens on the windows until mid summer of '86 and I belive that we only got them because of the AIDS pandemic and that the higher ups were trying to slow down the possibility of the spread of AIDS by mosquitoes. Be fore the screens we had mosquito nets. No A/C either. Wasn't that bad. We were hard core!
