I followed everything in this tutorial and now I have a fully functional Windows 98 machine, thank you so much. I've been wanting one for a while and now I can mess around with it.
Thanks a lot for making this video. a few months ago (like a month before this video was published), I did the same thing with installing Windows 98SE on a Dell Dimension 3000, and was having a lot of trouble. It took me a very long time to figure out the key step, which is to run setup with "setup /p i" switch. It would have saved me a lot of time if this video existed :). The /p i switch is CRITICAL, and likely the cause of a lot of other people's frustration with trying to do this on this type of desktop. So yeah basically just wanted to reiterate that in the comments and text form for people searching and stuff.
Thanks for this guide and for locating the drivers and posting them. The part of using "setup /p i" is invaluable as I ran setup directly from the CD-ROM and ran into IRQ conflicts than can not be resolved. Liked and subscribed. Hope you make more videos.
I can't believe this was just uploaded, bought one of these from a thrift store a month ago intending on installing 98 on it, and this will make that far easier. Perfect timing, thank you!
I have a 3000 which I plan on putting a Geforce in. I was thinking of XP but seeing this 2400 run 98 SE this well, I'm thinking that I should do the same on my 3000.
Ok a few things I've found out, by default cd audio doesn't work. The way to fix this was after installing the audio driver to go to control panel>multimedia>cd music and check the box that says "enable digital cd audio for this cd rom device." Also if you want to dualboot 98se and xp, you have to install 98 first, otherwise the 98 fdisk utility wipes your windows xp install.
So another thing I've found out! After installing all the drivers, installing microsoft intellipoint 4.1 seems to really help with the pointer movement and make it much smoother.
I have the same model mine came with the 2.6 celeron and 80gb hard disk drive. Without using the switch /p i the dell will just lock up when trying to run the setup. when running the format the 80gb hard disk drive was only showing 10 gb but after you get into windows you can see all 74gb. nice video and thanks for the drivers the only thing difference is I am using a pci Ati Radeon 9250 256mb it is running really quick on windows 98se.
@@computercatgaming02 just so much thanks to you for uploading the driver cd as well - i installed chipset first then graphics card and sound then lan after restart - win me would start with 1gb ram but gave a wierd out of memory error when it tried to start a capture program im running ( from a usb capture card ) which is the main reason for running this - i had it running previously on a p3 733mhz but needed the extra oomph the 2400 gives for capturing video .just a big thank you .

Maybe a tip that will help someone. My 2400 has Intel Extreme Graphics, not Extreme Graphics 2. The driver still works however. Installer stops to warn you about two missing .cat files. It asks for an Intel CD. Click OK, and then ignore each time.
Same here. In addition after following this guide I still have a "Other Device -- PCI Universal Serial Bus" question mark in the device manager. Even though USB seems to be working OK. i.e thumb-drives are working good. So I am going to research what that is about. Also I believe it to be unrelated -- I think it is a defect w/ just my board -- as it does not work on Windows XP either, my network card makes the computer hang after I install the drivers -- so I must disable the onboard network from the BIOS) other than that it works great.
It runs the games very nice using integrated graphics, but I am just curious if you ever tried it with your geforce PCI card? Also, thank you for doing this! I have subscribed.
Well yes I have (the MX-440) and it had similar performance to when I tried it under XP (got a separate video for that). But like I said in this video, the game performance with the integrated graphics was alot better under 98 than under XP for some reason.
@@computercatgaming02 Yes I did watch your older video about the finding a PCI card for the Dell 2400. That's too bad if the mx440 does not show a huge improvement under windows 98 like the integrated graphics. But still good for everyone to find a use for old things and keep them away from recycling.
@@infinity2z3r07 still there's better PCI graphics cards than the Mx440 that would work under 9x so there's definitely alternatives to the integrated graphics.
Hi, I have a 2400 and have followed all of the steps in the video. My problem is when I reboot after installing the chipset driver the “New Hardware Found” box gets stuck on the “Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7” When this happens the computer becomes completely unresponsive and if left alone will blank the screen after awhile. I can restart in safe mode, but booting normally causes the same issue. I could go through the install process a 4th time and just say forget the chipset drivers but I’m hoping someone out there has a solution for me.
