Where to eat in Athens Greece - 2022

- I just spent a week in Athens and want to share what I learned and where I ate. I always research the restaurants I eat in before going to make sure they meet my standards and have amazing food. This is often times one of the most exhausting parts of vacation and travel if you don't know where to eat so I hope I can take some of the stress of it off your plate :)
I would love to know your favorite Greek or Athens food in the comments and when you went/when you're planning to go?? Feel free to let me know if you have any questions, I'd love to give any advice I can to help you plan your trip :D
This was some of the best food I have ever eaten in my whole life. We certainly figured out where to eat in Athens!
We ate the most amazing Greek food while in Athens... including BUT NOT LIMITED TO the following list:
-Musaka
-Lamb Kleftiko
-Fried Feta Cheese (MY FAVORITE)
-Saganaki Cheese
-Souvlaki
-Greek Meatballs (YUM!)
-Fava
-Dolmadas (Stuffed grape vine leaves)
-Pistachio Ice Cream
-Fresh Fruit (Figs!!)
-Baklava
-And sooo much more!

Dan!!! You are be the ONLY non Greek person who has a UA-cam video about Greece that didn’t absolutely butcher the pronunciation! I couldn’t have hit Subscribe and like any faster! Bravo sir, I normally cringe watching videos about Greece. I really enjoyed your video and sincerely appreciate you for making the effort to correctly pronounce words that really aren’t that difficult.
Hi Nick! Nice to meet you! Thank you so much for your encouraging words! I really appreciate it! I am so in love with your country and can’t wait to come back! More Greece videos coming soon too :)

Hahaha!! Well, she gave me an experience I will never forget! I think I pay over paid for that fruit too but I’m okay with that 😂
Greece is like a food heaven.
So many things so many recipes...Greek food its best🇬🇷💙👌👌👌
I totally agree! The best of the best!
The great recipes are not in restaurants. I wish you eat homemade Greek food.

Fun video, as someone who has been to Athens once 4 years ago and returning again this summer, makes me very excited. No one else seemed to notice but I noticed you left Athens and went to my favorite little island at the end - Aegina - and ate figs at the floating market.
Yes!! The figs were amazing! I hope you have an amazing trip this summer! I am also hoping to go back this year!

Yes, but “Greek” cuisine consists of 90% Turkish-Ottoman dishes.
Hi Dan - which is this ice cream place ? Any specific or you get similar everywhere ?
Hi Rohan! I ate so much ice cream everywhere and found it is pretty similar! Just make sure there’s other people eating it too ;)

Okostas is perfect for being on a budget!! Definitely go there!
Hahaha that "Looney tunes" gypsy with the fig...cussing and swearing absurdities
It's pork suvlaki at Kostas we don't make beef suvlakia in Greece
Hey Mike! Thanks for the clarification! I asked in the restaurant at Kostas and they told me Beef, but maybe they were wrong. Either way - what a delicious lunch!
@@DanLikesToEat lol maybe I'm wrong but usually it pork if they told you beef I could be mistaken about Kostas but no worries as long as you liked it that's all that matters happy you came to visit our country good luck on your travels
Μοσχαρισιο μπιφτεκι ηταν...........
@@tasospatriwtis396 I think so :)
@@DanLikesToEat I saw Mark Wiens go to that place too and pretty sure he got beef as well?
I’m pretty sure what you ate at the beginning was gyros (pronounced yee-ros) and not souvlaki but ok😛
Kòstas is short for Constantínos in Hellenic
I think every foreigner is getting crazy with saganàki and the fried cheeses😂 we also like it a lot!
If you liked saganaki your should definitely try μπουγιουρντί / bugiurdí next time.
The typical shape of baklavà is rhombus (big star-shaped pieces) this I think is called saraglí.
There are a lot of types of syrup desserts, they are all originated to Constantinople and Smyrna and they came here with the Hellenes refugees in 1922.
That lady at the end😂😂😂😂😂
I think almost all of the youngest people know English but the elders…no!😂
Ok, it’s difficult for them!
She was saying things like:
Eat! Eat, damn you, eat!😂not in an offensive way! Eat more and quick!
Lol omg thank you for all the info! So fun to know what the woman at the end was saying 🤣🤣🤣 I loved learning everything you shared and more about your wonderful country! ευχαριστώ !!
You're wrong, in athens what he ate is souvlaki, the meat inside is not gyros
Edit: technically it is probably called kalamaki in athens but whatever
@@DanLikesToEat it looked like gyros to me because it was like… sliced.
Souvlaki is like bites of meat, in the video that looked sliced.
Only the idiots in Athens are calling souvlaki Kalamàki🤯
Athenians are calling Kalamaki the wooden skewer that the meat is pierced on.
Souvlaki comes form the word soùvla meaning pierced in Hellenic!
If you ask for one kalamaki in the rest of the country they will bring you a straw, to drink your coffee/juice/…etc
Only in Athens kalamaki means souvlaki🤯🤯🤯
Everyone knows the typical Hellenic souvla at Easter, when we have a whole lamb in souvla. Pierced from top to bottom in a metallic skewer and cooked on top of coals.
Athenians are saying that I’m gonna eat a skewer/ one kalamaki…😵💫😵💫😵💫🤯🤯🤯
It’s like saying I’m gonna eat the wooden stick that the meat is pierced on and not the actual meat!
Please Dan, don’t pay attention to that.
People in Athens are using some slang that confuses even us, the natives in the rest of the country!
@@Kolious_Thrace I've been to zakynthos, ikaria, evia, ioannina and many other places and never have people not understood what I meant when I asked for a kalamaki, what nonsense are you spouting.
A fundamental part of greek vocabulary is the fact that words can have multiple meanings depending on the context, just as people would assume I'm referring to a straw when I ask for a kalamaki with a drink in my hand people would assume I'm referring to the skewered meat when I'm ordering a souvlaki.
Stop acting all high and mighty, these are the kind of stuff that divides our country and turn us against on another, this is how the never ending civil wars keep brewing up, with petty disagreements that slowly devolve into unnecessary hate and conflict.
@@jimtsap04 κλαίω που τα λέμε αγγλικά για να τα καταλαβαίνει και ο άλλος…😒
This is not just a word that has two different meanings.
This is something that only Athenians are calling this way.
We just know what abnormalities you have and when you say kalamaki even if kalamaki means straw, we know that you mean souvlaki…
The hate comes from the Athenians!
When one understands that one person is from the north they begin to ‘’bully’’ him, saying this like ohh you want tzarziki or alifí (spread) mate…
Athenians have the problem!
First, you use an incomprehensible slang and second, you are mocking us of how we speak…
All Hellas knows one word for one thing and the slang word that the Athenians use for that thing…
not oranges....they are neratzia...very bitter citrus and closely related though.....we use them to make a greek sweet
What’s the name of the gelato place?? That was a tease 😂
Jordan! Total confession - I ate so much gelato that I couldn't figure out which spot was named which and I didn't document it well so I couldn't tell you the name of it. But generally just look to make sure the pistachio gelato isn't bright green (should be more of a mild green) and that's how you know the place is legit :)
It would have been more helpful if you had provided the resto addresses.
not orange trees actually although they look the same
Thanks for telling me! They look so similar but I understand now they are different :)
@@DanLikesToEat hello from Athens! It was the bitter orange tree (citrus)
Funny thing is, you tried some of the lower quality foods in this video 😂 For example, the Kostas souvlaki is alright but not even close to some other souvlaki places, it's just overhyped because it's a really old shop.
Gotta tell me where to go next time I come!
3:22 this is the typical baklava 😄
And it's so good!!
Why every complexick and jealus Turk entering in every video about Greece ? And saying his 🐂💩? Get a life Turk
Hey what's the ice cream shop ?
Ugh I’m the worst food blogger lol - I truly can’t remember the name of it but I ate pistachio ice cream at so many places that I would just recommend searching around on Google to find ones with good ratings :)
@@DanLikesToEat and this chocolate pistachio ice cream looks soooo good
@@artwarrior2718 ugh it totally was!!
On the cup it says "Αιάκειον" (Aiakeion) and i found that is a ice cream shop in Aegina island (it is about 1 hour by ferry boat from Athens). Aegina is the most famous place of pistachio production in Greece.
@@prokopisboukouvalas1431 yeeees! And it also produces the best pistachio nut butter 🤤🤤

Athens has great food BUT if you want to taste the heaven on earth visit Thessaloniki....and ask a local guy to drive you to the right places, I promise you that you will never forget theirs expiriance.

no stupid fries in the sandwich and not imported tourist pork, but it used to be only lamb. never beef or chicken. Okay sometimes it was a marinated cat but those days of fast food are gone.

as a Greek, there are better gyros elsewhere then o kostas, you tourists have made this place famous yourself s on youtube and he does not put fries in the gyro ether, it's not like the original.
Thanks for sharing your opinion!

Good work!
the fried cheese should have a tablespoon of honey and crushed pistachios , you got the tourist version
Tell me where in Athens I can get the non tourist version!
I am from Greece, I eat this thing everywhere i go and i haven't found this with pistachios anywhere. Just fried feta wrapped in phyllo with honey and sesame seeds, as in the video. So i would say that he didn't eat the tourist version, but you have eaten a more glamorous version :P
Robert what's wrong with you?
You Can't except that we have better food than yours and you say stupid things?
All lies.
I've never had pistachios on top...I may have seen it in some 'specialist' spots (to give you benefit of the doubt) but it'd be an extra, not the standard
Since when baklava is greek? 😏
Really bro???
What’s up bro?
0.40 First you name it then you eat it. This is not the actual souvlaki this is pita. In Athens people call it souvlaki and it's not correct. The souvlaki is pork meat pieces in a stick. In Athens call the souvlaki as kalamaki. Plus they put inside tzatziki which is wrong. Who wants to eat hot yogurt? Tzatziki gives freshness so you must not be with the hot meat.
Thanks for the info!! Seems like there is a lot of debate over this topic amongst Greek people... either way... it's delicious!
@@DanLikesToEat The best I have eaten was handmade by an elder in Thesaloniki city.
Beef souvlaki is not souvlaki
Based on all the Greek people that have commented on this, it seems like it may vary by region of the country because y’all seem to be arguing about it 😂 regardless… it’s so delicious!!!!
@@DanLikesToEat They are all Souvlaki, it’s just that the Beef variation is much less common. The Pork version is the mainstream one in Greece, followed by Chicken, for both the Souvlaki Square Chunks or the trimmed Gyro pieces..👍
Greek syrup is too heavy because it is usually made with honey.
It is so delicious!!
Greek food is ranked second in the World just behind Italy on FoodAtlas. Your name looks turkish/arab so you will obviously have some envy & jealousy & say something silly like that. It’s hilarious though, we Greeks like a good laugh when we see these type of comments 🤣
Do you have value problem in your country
I don't understand the question.
Που παει ρε μλκ😭
Ummmm..... Athens!!!
Mate it's not a beef... It's pork.. 🐽
Feta cheese! Now you know the origins of the word "fettish". The first section of foods was predominantly Turkish food. In any case, it looked really scrumptious. Greece, wait for me, here I come.
It's not Turkish food, it's politiki cuisine made by Greeks from Asia minor (Constantinoupoli).

@@DanLikesToEat Most versions are based primarily on sautéed aubergine (eggplant) and tomato, usually with minced meat, mostly lamb. The Greek version includes layers of meat and eggplant topped with a Béchamel ("white") sauce, and baked.
The modern Greek version was created by the French-trained Greek chef Nikolaos Tselementes in the 1920s.
