    Hello after a long period of silence on my end. I would have been commenting more, but the short version is that the last three and a half months, I had to work some where that I had little or no internet capabilities. Just today, I finally got caught up on all of your videos.
    I look forward to your future games with this rules set. I am pretty much a sucker for the Osprey blue book's rules, but so far really can't get around to doing any gaming or working on miniatures.

    Good presentation and solid idea on the "how to use existing collection to play this new ruleset". Looking forward to see you tackle it.

    I am so looking forward to watching you play this rules set. This game sounds like it might be the one to finally get me into Napoleonics

    I got these rules, and 2mm Napoleonic too. I really like the rules as a starting point for Napoleonic core level.

    I agree with you. I was looking at buying these rules when they were first announced, but no guidance on the scale(s) to play at. If you're using 2mm I guess I can deploy my old 6mm. I think if I'm moving Corps around, I really want to see plenty of blocks of troops.

    I bought these rules to take a look (our go-to is General d'Armee) and while I've seen some introductory "before-we-played-it" looks like this one, I am waiting for some AAR/reviews which are in short supply. The biggest issue other people seem to have so far is the need for formations in a corps level game so I wonder how that works. Bottom line - looking forward to a review/game report after someone has played it a few times. But thanks for posting.

      You and me both. I fully intend to play a few on camera. Have a few things to get to first. Maybe around Thanksgiving.

    A lot of new rules are quite basing-agnostic, though generally revolve around a 28mm infantry model being on a 20x20mm base and cav on a 25x50mm base.
    I've just switched to single-basing larger minis and then using trays to skip the headache of rebasing for different rules. For my 10 mm figures? Play as-is, and hope for the best...

    This is what I’ve been waiting for you to cover. You got me into sailing boats, can this be my first foray into Naps?

  • @andrewbeasley
    @andrewbeasley 3 роки тому

    So are you going to use your 2mm or pop your 15mm onto sabot bases and use them?
    Of course you could join me and use the blocks from Battlescale - quicker to paint than 2mm :-)

    I am REALLY looking forward to seeing how you tackle this! 2 X 2 Napoleonics is an interesting approach... but Absolute Emperor appears to use mechanics that I am far more familiar with. Let the Learning Curve Begin! The Battle Of Bumville alone looks to be worth the price of admission!

    Ackshuyally, you mean "It's not for people with a *high* time preference."
    I haven't picked up an Osprey game yet that wasn't either very good, or made me want to play even if I didn't have anyone to play against. I especially love scale neutral systems.

    • @TheJoyofWargaming
      @TheJoyofWargaming  3 роки тому +3

      U rite.
      But as a wargamer who plays hex and counter rulesets for fun, I know the proper way to phrase it is, "It's not for people who don't have a low time preference, unless the presence of a spousal unit exerts a zone of control over that unit and no supply chains have been disrupted in the previous turn (see rule 6.4.3.1)."

    I have become a total fan of your website and have obtained a set of Ableloute Emperor and I am having a problem trying to find where the rules mention the base ratio you mentioned, based on one base of artillery etc. Can you kindly tell me where to look.

    • @TheJoyofWargaming
      @TheJoyofWargaming  Рік тому

      The first paragraph on page 8 lists of frontage for troops in line. For infantry it's 6 in cavalry it's 8 in for artillery 2 in. Scale up or down as needed. I cut them in half to work well with my 1-in bases.

    Once more, for brevity, before caffeine turns another comments section into my personal blog… this rules set is a work of genius. Because a division includes regimental guns, skirmishers and reserve, you could mix and match your figures or just move your bases around. I’m going all in with some 1/72s to test this and a few other things. I really hope that Bruce Boyd gives us a variation focusing on the American Civil War in the future, or rifle and Sabre as Neil Thomas puts it.

      I think he said something to that effect on the Armchair Dragoon's playthrough of his Waterloo scenario. It's a bit long, but if you haven't watched it, it's a great video.
      He says a lot of things in that video though, and I can't remember if he was talking about a 7 years War version, or a late 1800s

      @@TheJoyofWargaming hmmm I had a good look… by the way the channel Napoleonic Wargaming is an amazing resource if you haven’t seen it. I have seen criticism of the rules insofar as divisions don’t really form square or line etc but surely he means the battalion bases within the division and it’s just represented that way? Ah Osprey… sometimes it’s not clear. I did trade away from Chosen Men/Rebels and Patriots/Honours of War because I notice that Too Fat Lardies covers those periods with one set of rules… I am curious about General D’Armee…but those Osprey books you can learn in a small handful of games.

      @@TheJoyofWargaming I just got Bob Cordery’s The Portable Napoleonic Wargame on order. Featherstone and Charles S Grant and Neil Thomas all have books for this period. Increasingly with the exception of some high fantasy and sci fi stuff, I’m being drawn back to these old games. They are so simple but therein lies the flavour - and the need for creativity. I’ll let you know if it’s worth it! I’m a bit Ospreyed out I think, need different approaches to keep things fresh and I think that actually necessitates even more simplicity.

    Off topic, but I thought you'd enjoy. Geek Gaming Scenics (GGS) and Ebay Miniature Rescue (EMR) have just discovered small scale wargaming, 10mm and 15mm respectively. They came to the same conclusion you did. The smaller scale hits the sweet spot of cost, quality, storage and portability.

    I really wish you would do some straight up how to play videos. Maybe each one concentrating on a different phase of the game.
    My group has just started playing this game. We have had one game so far. We are playing at 54 mm scale on the floor. About half of us are experienced wargamers, but none of us have played in Napoleonic game before. I think there may be some unspoken conventions that we do not know about that are giving us trouble.
