- Crazy and controversial moments at MTV awards 1993.
Mama ru let her anger out on stage when Mr Television Milton Berle backstage sexually try to grabbed Mama ru's ass and boobs.
1:09 awkward attempt on holding ru's hand.
cathy Larson then what are you doing here baby?
Definitely, this is the epitome of WTF moments.
Omg I will never forget this !!!! I was about 8yo and when ru said he wore pampers my mouth fell thru the floor
Evidently you’ve already forgotten; he said diapers, not pampers...
More like depends
Yeah, it's a good thing you, and i will never get old like him, and we will never need adult diapers. Good to be us! Forever young.
Yes! Poor old Milt never saw that read coming! 😂 I can laugh about it now, but I was shocked and shook back then. I thought Miltie was just a sweet innocent old man.
Little did I know he use to pull his d*ck out and wag it around at unsuspecting people back stage, among other tyrannical behaviors. Getting dancing girls pregnant and denying the babies were his. Openly stealing other comedians jokes. Yikes.
The one genuinely good thing I did hear about Milton doing was booking a black quartet on his variety show hour in the 40's and threatening to walk out if the execs didn't let them go on. So he wasn't a TOTAL monster. At least he was not a racist pig- just a sexist pig! 🥴

I watched this live back when it originally aired, and it was uncomfortable then.
@Edgehead10075 Yes, the story came out but it was years later (when MTV interviewed Ru immediately after she refused to comment) so it was a real "WHAT is happening?" at the time. Times have changed since the 90's, but even by then you couldn't just say shit like "She/He" (like Berle does in the clip.) Super cringey.
@Edgehead10075 Ehh, you could but even then it was frowned upon. I was in my early 20's at the time and was watching with a group of people and the whole room kind of gasped. I do think the potential repercussions for casually throwing slurs around are far more significant now.....unless you are President, of course.
I did too.
Every time a “Christian” troll posts illiterate hate speech online, an atheist gets their wings.
Milton berle used to dress in drag decades before rupaul. Never liked rupaul since this
As someone who doesn’t know the context of this clip at all, it feels like the old man on the right is a little off his game and wasn’t prepared to improvise at that level.
Here's the thing... just because he said they were ad-libbing doesn't mean they were. Lines like that are often still scripted. Makes you skeptical of everything.
@@alfrednorris1895 It was ad libbed, Ru Paul said so. The old man was rude and homophobic back stage and Ru had had enough.
@@jamesb7924
Read me again. Just because he said it was ad-libbed doesn’t mean it actually was. It’s showbiz.
Ru comebacks are snatching my existence YAAASSSSS
Bro, yall are overthinking this shit. They both were obviously messing with us.
💯. It's comedy. Ppl in the 2020s have forgotten what comedy is.
It's not comedy. This was real. RuPaul threatened to sue Milton Berle for sexual harrassment. They were FURIOUS when Milton dropped the "Him/her" and "she/he" lines. They fought backstage about this, too.
Milt had been disrespectiny Ru back stage and Ru had had enough
it's even said in his book that it was only about last minute before the awarding is about to start, the producer starts to pair ru with milton with a script of jokes that makes ru a butt of it. SHE HAD IT OFFICIALLY!.
No he didn't
@@kellymcquay2626 Yes he did, bitch
@@galzladymisery4954he brings it on himself though
Who cares? Rupaul is a degenerate
Milton was a bitter old man and not the off the cuff genius he used to be. I really dont think he understood how serious Rupaul was about drag or how it has evolved in to something completely different. He use to do it as a gag at a time where it was semi taboo, and he only did it for laughs. Where as that is Rupaul's whole persona..what a debacle!!
I agree that some of the values and choices are very different from the traditional ones that I grew up on, and I don't agree with a lot of them. However, I defend the right of the pursuit of happiness which should be afforded to all. This is what makes us uniquely American and a true democracy. Live and let live..
Berle did the exact same bit with Henny Youngman in 1966

I think it was planned.
Shut up, bitch. Miltie is a legend.
Rupaul the one who came off as bitter
@@LM_357 Not at all, Milton shaded her backstage. Ru shoulda read his ass even more to filth.
He should have said 'rupaul. What you learned about me in the bedroom should stay in the bedroom'.
I remember watching this live. It was awkward watching but RuPaul was warranted in what she said. He was insulting to her back stage. #teamrupaul

I remember this too! I was uncomfortable then and I'm uncomfortable now. I heard Berle was a rude SOB backstage.
Poor Berle. Throwing out hoary old lines trying to keep up with RuPaul. He fancied himself as the elder statesman of comedy but his shtick was ancient and creaky.
Him
It's a shame this was considered a disaster, they have great chemistry together.
Uncle Milty got completely eviscerated. He was a Legend. Then, had to change his diapers.
Yikes so disrespectful towards rupaul and so nasty to the audience to.
Y'all sure get offended by every thing
As far as the audience, thats his comedy. Thats how he always was.

“And now you wear diapers”
I’d always heard Milton was rude to everyone. Try some humility dude.
According to Tim Redi he made one of the Mowry girls cry in Sister Sister
Ru KILLED it. Milton was so irrelevant
Berle wasn’t used to getting clapped back 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
He took it from Statler and Waldorf on *The Muppet Show.*
“uncle MILTIE”😭
It was said that Milt was hard to work with hint why he got banned from SNL
fuck snl
I was born in 1976 so like everyone else in that audience we probably just knew Milton Berle from his many guest appearances in 80's and 90's TV shows and his cameo from Pee Wee's Big Adventure.
I just watched a video about Milton on SNL and how cringe and out of touch he was.
This is worse.
He was an awful person.
Everyone gets old.... Not you or I of course, just everyone else.
@@TheLostWorldFanChannLook, it's not his age- he was already awful when he was young. You should look up some of the rumors about his behaviors.
@@themaggattack he was a comedy legend
@@robertriley1569 doesn’t change fact he was an asshat
What was the purpose of replaying this repeatedly and chopped clips?
If the video surpasses a certain length, the algorithm makes it more visible. I guess the threshold is six minutes.
I have to say Uncle Miltie was made to look pathetic.
I don’t understand the problem. I thought they were playing off each other. Funny.
Milton Berle wanted to stay relevant, but his ego and assholishness always got in the way. Compare him to Betty White, who aged very gracefully in comedy.
Betty White kept working by taking all the roles Estelle Getty got when she got too sick to work.
@@frankreads8618 Milton Berle used the same jokes. You can't be that way forever. You know what though? Rickles did the same thing but he was way more entertaining to still watch. Even if jokes are repeated, there was improv, and he definitely commented on different stuff. Berle relied on things to be so strict and scripted, like a Bob Hope special. It doesn't fool anybody and had aged. An update on his material like commenting on the news would be pretty good. If I recall, he did that on the Carson show during Watergate.
This is beyond cringe-making. I think Milton Berle was way past it by then.
Ah, actually, this is sad as all hell. MTV brought Berle in just to troll him. And he spent the last 30 years of his life making a fool out of himself to stay relevant, so he was all for it.
I’m here due to the fan caller on Andy Cohens watch what happens live!!!! The fan asked Rupaul about this moment!
Ru went off script after a few back and forth and that threw Milton Berle off. Maybe something did happen beforehand between them.
I like Milton Berle's comedy in the Dean Martin celebrity roast. But still dude, I guess I agree with Rupal on this one. She deserves respect. I guess the best choice would have been if she presented the award with someone else.

mentally ill men in dresses do NOT deserve respect.
People are too sensitive. This was funny, they both nailed it. Who cares if they were upsetting each other? It was entertaining and that's what they were there to do. This is 10 times funnier than all the scripted jokes from the entire night.
RuPaul went toooo far. Attacking and on the verge of maiming. He obviously didn't really understand Milton's shtick.
Actually, I think Ru through him off. He was willing to follow the script and Ru patronized and insulted him.
Read up on why Ru insulted hum..
RuPaul has Peppermint energy in this clip ❤
He was so disrespectful
Rupaul was a disrespectful shit... I don’t say bitch, because I don’t know what the hell she/he is!
blue kage Proof? Are you blind and deaf?? And, oh yes... he/she/it is a REAL icon, someone we all want our kids to look up to. I’m so glad for the lbgtqrstuvwxyz community! 😂😂🤣
@@wvcricker5683 the guy he was with was being inapropiate to him so he was returned the favor. They also get text and jokes send through earpieces or they study some 'rude' jokes, before the show for good shock television. Apart from that Ru has been an amazing person : helping people get famous & succesful and helping gay people and listening to them. In the bible is a story about a woman who is being judged and sentenced to death because she made a mistake. She was being sentenced but the judges were cruel and they gave Jesus the final word. He said : 'everyone who has never done something wrong can throw rocks at her(rock death used to be very popular as an exuction method). Nobody threw a rock and all the judges left, from this we learned an important message : don't judge anyone for a mistake if you have also done something wrong. and Clearly you didn't get that message, also you should learn how to spell. I mean if a young teen is better at grammar, punctuation and formatting sentences then you must be either : dumb or ignorant.
@cathy Larson ok boomer
@cathy Larson i'm satan bitchhh xoxo you worst nightmare @idfc_035 (my gay friend typed this btw, not me 👑)
Ive worked with people like this.
They do one thing and act one way in rehearsal, but once the red light is on: they step on your lines, try to steal your joke, or just disrespect you to look better.
The whole Wilt and Milt thing was probably not in rehearsal, and it if did...maybe they laughed then. When they didn't laugh here, Milton gets desperate but still goes back to try it again.
Milton didn't know he was outwitted and out classed by the "Black man in a dress."
It looked like both of them were trying to be funny but it got out of hand. I understand what the show was trying to do but Berle was known to be difficult to work with and was not the right choice for this.
These are all his old jokes, he has done most of these jokes with different people over the decades.
I remember watching this live and it was such an uncomfortable and disrespectful skit. They were both in the wrong, and nobody wins here. 🥀
Actually I thought it was pretty funny when she said now he wears diapers , I think they had it planned and he ad-libbed that , that's why I'm Milton had to say his line again . I thought it was funny that he did that to Milton , but they both were professionals about it . Supposably RuPaul has made more money than any other drag queen ever which doesn't surprise me though since he has all a bunch of music and his own shows and has played in numerous movies , I never knew it before but I guess he was the B-52's Love Shack music video in 1989
It was ad-libbed. RuPaul distinctly pointed that whole situation out in her book.
Tbf not very original Milton was 84 here .
There was Divine and Dame Edna before. But RuPaul in 1993 exploded in fame, star power, wealth, a household name and hip with the youth, the complete drag package the previous two never had.
You should watch the video about the time Milton hosted SNL
Ru literally toward over Milton in every way.
You mean towered.
"If you had money, you'd buy a seat." ZING!
Why are people in the comments tripping balls , it was all scripted .
No it wasn't
No, it wasn’t. Ru went off script, that’s why Milt had to introduce the gown line three times. The third time, Ru Paul said her scripted response, Why is that, Uncle Milty? So that Milton could make the corny Drag joke. Ru was pissed and getting Milton back for being an arrogant, disrespectful old fart.
The diaper joke wasn't
Wow. I had forgotten about this!
I’m having Deja vu during this clip!
That's because they repeated the same clip 3 times!
👍😁
RuPaul is so obnoxious here.
Lmao the look on rus face when dude tries growling at her and being intimidating ..she was like little man I will break you in front of this whole world
RuPaul telling him he now wears diapers, was just MEAN spirited.....
True.
It was due to Milton assaulting RuPaul backstage. He wrote about it in his book. So rather let him get away with it and no one doing anything about it. RuPaul decided to get his own back in his own way. It got RuPaul briefy blacklisted for it for saying that on stage but it didn't last very long.
Cry about it
I believe Milton Berle was the oldest person to appearance on an MTV Award stage (not sure of how old he was here) until Bob Barker
At that time, the late Milton Berle was eighty-five years old (as of 12 July 1993).
Mess with Rupaul... see what happens, old man.
Flip Wilson has left the chat.
This is a work; Milton did a variation of this same routine on the Hollywood Palace thirty years earlier with Henny Youngman and more recently on The Muppet Show with Stadler and Waldorf. He was notoriously prickly to work with, no doubt, as was anyone who came up through vaudeville. Being in his eighties and in front of a rowdy crowd probably didn’t help, but this is old-school schtick.
and at 1:05 Milton KNEW he fucked up... 😓😓😓
milt tried to get fierce and ru bulldozed her
It's no big for a person in his 30s to bulldoze over an elderly person because they are old / feeble , and their minds are foggy, and no longer sharp.
Check my brain and we will start even & leaning on Ru Falsies trumps old person diaper jokes😂
Milton was just a washed up old has-been at this point .
He just bought a car from a little old lady she only used it to see her grandchildren, in the South pole.
don’t mess with Ru.
This is sad. Milton Berle sadly reminds me of Joe Biden..
Biden could never ad libb or be as sharp as Berle
I was about to say something similar. That drooling Alzheimer's patient in the white House.
Milton Beryl was a Legend, he was around when comedy was clean, and still funny. His era was a time when all the legendary greats, were alive.George burns, Jack Benny, Don Rickles, Dean Martin, Redd Foxx, Just to Name A few. There are alot more. May You Rest In Peace, Mr. Television Milton Berle. God Bless.
He was already done by the 70s
Ok Boomer
SNL ruined comedy. None of their sketches hold up and anyone who was ever any good on it did their best work elsewhere. They probably got Milton Berle because that show was on after Gary Coleman‘s bedtime.
@@haileyshannon7548Berle was for his own time and did Friars roasts later on. RuPaul was of RuPaul's time. I prefer RuPaul, but I still respect Berle. Even though it wasn't nice behind the scenes, this did very well on-air. I didn't buy into there being into any tension. I thought they worked damn well together, and I liked Milton getting the knick taken out of him here, by comparison to the usual format.
I remember watching this....
People see this man being rude to Ru Paul?
Very rude jerk Ru! He took it too far! I remember this well and I never ever liked Ru for that. Ru can't take a joke. Everybody knows how Milton was. His comedy could be rough but he WAS funny. Laugh, rude Ru, and just move on!
Mr tuesday night zinged back with delight.

That was awesome

Milt so not funny
Rupul tried ti improvise but got owned! "I"ll check my brains and we'll start even." Then leaning against his "breast." Rupaul tried being slick and got what he deserved. Milt even said "ya wanna add lib" meaning - let's bring it - don't mess with a real comic.
Rupaul would have slayed Milton!
and actually did, here.@@paddyoak1
1993 RuPaul wasnt quick yet with reading and 1993 Berle was well past his prime with the lazy, slow insults.
Pick your spots baby... Pick your spots
Richard pryor agrees...
disrespectful
When RuPaul said "You still got it, Uncle Miltie," Berle should have pointed and said "Yeah, whatever IT is." Woulda shut RuPaul up sweet.
Or pointed to RuPaul's crotch and said "We know you've still got IT too." Damn only 30 years too late.
Rupaul isn’t trans though
would've been just as unfunny as everything else he said here
All staged.
G Hall if it were staged I don’t think rupaul would’ve said she regretted that she lost composure
It wasn't staged, believe me.
