The axolotl has been called a “conservation paradox” - a creature that is ubiquitous in pet stores, science labs and pop culture… yet almost extinct in the wild.
The axolotl is an amphibian with incredible regenerative abilities. It lives in only one place outside captivity: the waters of Lake Xochimilco, in Mexico City. Now, a team of scientists is working to secure its future by looking to its past. Working with local farmers, they’re reconstructing a system of chinampas, or island gardens, pioneered by the Aztecs - to restore the axolotl’s habitat. A few hours’ drive to the west, another team is working to save a closely related salamander species by teaming up with Dominican nuns who have raised the creatures in captivity for well over a century. The unusual alliances show that saving species can be as much about culture and heritage as it is about science.

The wonderful thing about projects like this is the long term value for all the wildlife in these waters and the humans who also live near, enjoy and work on those waters.

this gives me hope. i am optimistic that some time in the distant future we can look back and remember when the axolotl's wild population were in the mere double digits per sqkm, rather than the thousands, post-restoration.

People like Claudia are the only chance the earth has to remain a viable habitat for all. The earth is my mother, she is my nourishment and my shelter. Treat her with reverence.

The most powerful act to create and preserve viable habitats is by eliminating dead animal products.
The loss of wild areas to animal agriculture is the leading cause of the current mass extinction of vital native. wildlife.
Considered the most comprehensive analysis between farming and the environment, without meat and dairy consumption, global farm land use could be reduced by 75%. An area equivalent to the U.S., China, EU, and Australia combined---and still feed the world.

Great docu, I love the writing and narration in this series. Note: you could have mentioned the probable effect of Minecraft and its axolotls, if nothing else then for the extra clicks it would have gotten you thanks to the algorithms... In fact, you should try adding "Minecraft" to the video's tags or whatever anyway, can only help!

Yes, México is a true wonderland of nature… I live twenty minutes away in San Diego! But I have been many times! It’s even more special because México is part of the top most-biodiverse countries in the world, including total species of plants, fungi & all animals-Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Venezuela, México, USA, Australia, Papúa New Guinea, Indonesia, Philippines, China, India, Malaysia, South Africa, Madagascar & Democratic Republic of the Congo. 👍🏽

if I'm correct, axolotls never really had natural predators thus the introduction of invasive species resulting in devastating population loss. the lack of any natural defenses means they are free game for any predator. it's insidious

They don't actually kill the achoces for the cough syrup lol they literally take a bit of slime coat for it which doesn't hurt it at all and it regenerates anyway, thus an endless supply of respiratory medicine so yeah they're keeping them from becoming extinct while also helping kids with respiratory problems...Those nuns deserve mad respect

“Specimens from Mexican lake were sent alive to France by order of Marshal Forey, Bazaine's successor as commander-in-chief of the French expeditionary force to Mexico, and arrived at the Paris Jardin d'Acclimatation in 1863. Some which were passed on to the Jardin des Plantes bred there soon after, and the innumerable axolotls kept in aquariums all over Europe are believed to be their descendants. The first examples to reach this country were exhibited in the London Zoological Gardens in 1864. The normal axolotl is a dark grey or black creature. But white axolotls, albinos of a creamy white or pale flesh colour, with eyes and gills of a beautiful red, are often seen in aquariums. They are said to be all descendants of an albino male which appeared as a freak among a normal brood in Paris in 1866, and which, paired with normal females in 1867 and 1868, gave life to numerous white offspring which by selection have become fixed as a permanent race without, according to Professor Vaillant, “

Austria need to return the crown of our great Tlatoani Moctezuma to Mexico so we can feel complete once more, cortez k i l l e d Moctezuma after torching him and burn his feet to get the locations of the Aztecs treasures, but austria is refusing to return the penacho to their people even when they know it’s belongs to the Aztecs, the crown of Moctezuma should be in the rightful place, I mention this because the axolote is Moctezuma twin brother.
