  • Hello everyone, here are a few run by type videos compiled last fall on the Rock River Valley Traction railway. Also included are some views from the cab, and a teaser shot of an up and coming project that will hopefully be completed in 2021. Going to be a busy year! I was hoping to make some videos in the snow over the winter but it came too fast for that to happen, snow pack out there is 16-20" right now which is far too deep for any operation to take place. If it melts away slowly there is still hope for this to happen, so fingers crossed.

    Well hopefully that means either a snow plow or a snow broom will be a project in the future😏

    Gotta second the comment on hoping for some snow fighting equipment someday-
    I get the impression a sweeper would probably work best- a heavy plow is better suited for deep snow, but might be more prone to derailing (particularly if it's a shear type). Plows were more popular than sweepers out where I live in New England, the majority were double truck, I know Wason of Springfield, Mass built a good number of them.

      If I liked working in the cold I would probably already have built one. But if I do build anything, it probably would be a sweeper or some kind of rotary blower, or perhaps both. A plow would not work well, the top of the rail must be completely clean to get a ground connection and I would need a lot of weight to push through some of the cuts that drift shut. Much easier to just wait until spring lol.

    Cool maintenance of way cars, but for more authenticity, they all need 4-wheel trucks. I would also suggest getting 2-55 gallon steel drums for the tank car(s), cut out one end, weld them together, put a dome on the top, and make a frame similar to the modern ones of today, it would look much better than the plastic one. Oh, and you need a bay window caboose too!, thats what the Illinois Terminal used.

    • @CNW4145
      @CNW4145  2 роки тому

      Ah yes, I'll get right on that in my spare time. I did actually have 2 drums welded together for the tank car once upon a time, they rotted out though. Plastic is forevaaaa

    Forgive me if you have covered this in another video, please feel free to direct me to where I missed it. I am intrigued by this and had a couple of questions. So positive power comes in from the wire and the loco is grounded through the track? Do you have to attach the track to ground rods driven into the ground, and if you do, how often do you have to ground the track? In the car barn tour video you showed some of the electrical and mentioned 100 amp service to the panel, does this mean the loco is receiving 100 amp 110 volt service? And you said that you had three sub stations, how do you determine where these are needed? Do you just measure voltage and look for dropped voltage?
    Sorry for all the questions, just trying to gather information as I would like to try this one day. Thanks for any info that you can provide.

    • @CNW4145
      @CNW4145  2 роки тому +1

      The power coming into the property is 240V split phase power. From there, it it run to an isolation transformer which boosts the voltage slightly to 250V and creates a single phase 250V with respect to ground. The wire is energized with 250V AC power. The rail is tied to the return of the transformer, but also there are ground rods driven in places. The substations are the only place where the overhead is fed from, and the rail is tied to the transformer return. The substations are spread out fairly equally along the line, to minimize power drop.

    • @f2535
      @f2535 2 роки тому

      @@CNW4145 Thank you for explaining that. It is close to what I was thinking, except I didn’t think of the transformer to single phase.
