The Boxmotor is alive!

- Over the summer I managed to get the boxmotor out of the barn for the first time in over 10 years, it was quite a chore to move it as the ties had rotted out under its track so the car was derailed due to a wide gauge. Once getting the track back in gauge it was able to be taken out and we went for a short ride, only to discover what I had feared would happen- the car will not clear one of the trees on the west end loop. This meant I had to run backwards to return to the barn, I have decided that this year I will take the tree down so it can be operated the full route. You will notice all the sparking at the wheels on the first run by, this is because of all the rust on them from not running for so long. Even the headlight was blinking due to the extreme voltage drop caused by the rust! You can expect to see this car out running more in the future as I have some exciting upgrades planned for it, so stay tuned for that and in the meantime enjoy this little adventure :) Edit- just noticed one of the run by clips is in there twice, no idea why it did that when I uploaded but hey the sparks are cool so why not enjoy it twice lol
Seems to me you got no choice, you can’t get by that tree & you can’t move the track so the answer is obvious, that tree has got to go!!
But he ca build another track. Maybe short section of bypass-track. So no need to cut that tree and no need to move that sectin of track too...
@@laurilaaser2236don’t be a simp. It’s easier to just cut the tree. And cutting one tree can’t hurt the environment that much
@@Yousufbaby for arguments sake i would say whichever was there first remains. If the tree grew around the track it should have been copsed earlier. If the track was laid to near the tree it should be repositioned. It is a simple question of priorities and nothing more.

I'm impressed ... by the amount of work and by realizing this motorcar is 3 years older than me...
What a great set up, lots of work ahead of you. Ime in Bendigo in Australia and we have a working tram museum still operating on the roads of Bendigo, one of very few in AUS. Well done, best of luck with it.
Very cool!
Very good miniature railway! Almost looks like a real train up close
Thank you!
Very impressive!
Are u going to open to public if u put seats in it it could cover the cost of up keep
I wish I could but sadly its not feasible due to many factors.
You’ve really let things go down. You going to sell the place?
Nice
What Gauge is this line?
24"
Now I know what size I want to build in my yard. This is awesome. Might have to use angle iron for track though as Tbar in steel or ultra Light rail is kinda hard to find these days.
It is a bit hard to find, I've found it on ebay, craigslist, and the discover live steam website in the past.
What an amazing little railway, so much character and charm especially with the overhead power. My 5 cents on the sleepers is maybe soak them in oil to repel what looked like white ant damage. And as for rodents buy the latest generation baits because the earlier bait styles seem to have no effect on pesky destructive rodents.
I've never seen a private overhead electrical power system. Very impressive. Perfect scale if you have more than an acre or two of land. The car looks awesome!
How does that work? I can't see a continuous electrical line or the car touching anything overhead?
There aren't many of them around, that is for sure!
@@CNW4145 very unique I love it!

I would love to see a video on the full history of the line. such an intriguing line! looking forward to the new videos!
I was giggling with excitement throughout the whole video!
Amazing to see the old girl still runs as smooth as ever!
Glad to see it, hopefully it can get the 119 treatment, now that would be outstanding!
It will be getting some updates, so stay tuned!
I would be tempted to pour a concrete floor for the whole car shed. It would solve the tie rotting problem and give you a nice clean place to perform repairs, maintenance, and/or rebuilds. Tracks, of course, would be bolted to, and level with, the floor.
You are right. While the concrete mixer is around, I would also add an inspection pit - nearly indispensible in a maintenance shed
@@gianfranconicola8645 And with a 220V motor he could run the thing off of the catenary.
@@douro20 Sorry, I can't get what you mean
There actually is an inspection pit in the barn already :)
@@gianfranconicola8645 He could hang a hook on the catenary for power.
Fantastic! Thank you for letting us look over your shoulder and go for a ride. Good luck with the tree issue.
oh wow i've been trying to search for this channel for about 15 years. i remember seeing the birney ride videos when i was a kid but could never find them again. thanks to the algorithm for reuniting me with this incredible railway!
Welcome back, glad you found us again!
That sure seems like a lot of sparks down at the wheels, especially around all those dry leaves and dead grass 😮
Now there's some serious interurban trial and error! I love how that car looks and I'm sure you will get it running and looking even better. You have a fantastic railroad and great equipment to run on it. Keep it up!
Thank you!
You can see why concrete ties/sleepers are a thing. The dirt floor of your car barn invites critters to have a snack. So much hard work. Thanks for sharing your progress with us.
It does spark a lot, might wanna check on that so it doesn’t start a fire
No worries, no fires were started.
@@CNW4145 yeah, but the potential is there as it depends on how dry the surroundings are
This guy has clearly been running this rail road for a long time, over 10 years at least. Im sure he knows what he is doing
@@Leeham03 there was clear sparks, something that should be fixed if he doesn’t want brush fires
Clearly you don’t know whats going on
Love that boxmotor...very good looking...looks like the Cadillac on the rails there.
It is, rides like a Cadillac too!
I'd be hesitant to put in a different motor driver - that old traction controller is absolutely fantastic!
It will be keeping the same controller, just interfaced to something a little more modern.
That box motor is a real beauty! I'm surprised that anything can roll past that tree on the curve. Since the car barn has been home base for the locos for so long and probably forever from now on, has a concrete floor with the rails set into it ever been considered?
For the cost of concrete I'm going to continue with the rock floor, its just a little too much to justify.
Love this railroad! Its fantastic to see that you have the inspiration and interest to keep this going. The original group is smiling down upon you! Love the CA&E inspired shed by the way!
Thank you very much, I hope they too are enjoying watching the improvements shape up!
прозьба помочь пленным украинцам такими жд составами! у них ничего нет отдайте дай дай дай дай дай
That's an ash tree so I wouldn't be too unhappy about losing it cause its eventually going to get emerald ash borer and die so....
Wow how many people own a narrow gauge railway on their land! 😂
That tree! I think that your options are very limited. New track route, removing the tree, sawing down the tree. As I say, your options are VERY limited!
Well, I would move the track around the tree, making a bigger radius. Then I would renovate the car in green with gold pinstripes. Fit some bench seats, then advertise for support by offering trips around the woodland, ext ext. People love things like that, you could pick a nice spot to have Tea/Coffee with snacks? Go for it, I believe you will do well.
Wow) Fantastic! Thank you for letting us look over your shoulder and go for a ride)
This is really awesome! I would love to have that on my farm.
Классная конечно узкоколейка! Но и трудов требует не малых.
It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood
Where are you located? I'd kill to see your railroad. I have a friend who runs a railroad museum in North East Pa who would also love to visit. Awesome work!
Wow, just stumbled on this video completely at random. Thank you for taking us along - a fascinating process to get this boxmotor back on the rails and it was beautiful to see and hear it running!
Oh, what a lovely old car! How I would love to ride it.😊
This boxmotor looks like it came from a fairy tale or a Hayao Miyazaki movie.😁👍
Maybe a studio ghibli as well
I'd love to see closer look on the truck / bogie.
Это же сколько сил надо и желания чтобы содержать всю эту инфраструктуру в порядке и восстанавливать её.
Тут ничего сложного, когда в радость!
You really did a great job. I love your electric railway. Regards from France
20 mins of pulsating entertainment.
Just like the interurban days. Very nice.
Awesome! I particularly liked the sparks at the rail. 😊
I'm exceedingly jealous. That is all I can say.
The boxmotor car is a beauty, and also the track, your place is very Nice to look at😊
You don’t have a shortage of trees that’s for sure. Turn it into ties. 😁
Hahahaha!
Excellent. Thanks for sharing this
You might have a look at the motors they seem to be sparking
you should try concrete sleepers like the UK railroads use, the termites will be disappointed though.
TREE HAS TO GO - no question 😂 🪓🪚
That was so cool I really like what you did it's amazing you got it to work too bad that stupid tree was in the way so I look forward to seeing when you get rid of the tree and complete the circuit good luck nice job.
2ft gauge?
Decovillage es el tipo de via
I think it’s 24inches
Found this video a while back but just got round to watching it. Never heard of the RRVT Railway before but color me interested! I do love little private lines, narrow gauge and, well, I'm not sure I can call the boxmotor here a trolley per say, but it's very reminiscent of one to me. Looking forward to seeing more.
Man someday I hope to have a ton of land with a little electric line like this
Wow that takes me back thank you very much it’s incredible❤️
Can you make a video about the breaks on these trains?
I'll add that to my list, thanks for the idea!
🚅 don't you all enjoy railroad
🚈 trams, trains etc are just so cool
🚞 take a ride in my ''transportation'' folder, (folder 4) :)
True interurban railroading, just in 1/2 size....good luck removing the tree!
why there is electricity sparking underneath
The wheels were very rusty from not running for 10 years!
Concrete ties in the shed ? Beautiful boxmotor !
Outstanding video. Really love the looks of this car. Thanks for the ride along 👍
Its good to have it out running again, looking forward to making some upgrades on it.
like this great estoration video.
I'd be a little concerned about the dry leaves catching afire, watching sparks coming from the wheels.
That has never happened, only when I'm welding on the track lol
What city / state did it originate from?
Check out the description of the channel, Illinois
Dude; You have something SO special here.
What other rolling stock is in the barn?
If you dig around on my page I did a little carbarn tour a few years ago. Enjoy!
Wow! I'm so impressed with your set-up! Your very own railroad! You are very blessed.
Beautiful box-motor! Have you considered paving the car barn for ease of maintenance and mobility?
I have but the cost is prohibitive.
9:30 train drives
very cool train, good luck in prettying it all up, it deserves to shine again.
I've dug out a couple of broken sleepers in a yard from underneath a derailed wagon that got an earth fault . It's awkward but we got it done , moved a Timber over and re chaired it . Appreciate the work to get dug out and gauged . 👍
Another fantastic episode! Thanks so much!
Who supplied you the rail?
Most of the rail was salvaged from old mines and factories.
@@CNW4145 I see.. that's cool.
I love the sound of mechanical parts running on tracks
She looks quite happy to be alive again 😊
good photography, great angles and consistent color through. Post could be smother, editing needs a little attention, scenes out of sequence and repeated.
I guess since you don't want to cut that tree down and you don't want to move the track, your only solution is to cut the corner off of the trolley. If you do both sides, it won't be so noticeable! LOL
Even the headlight still works!
wait this ISN'T a garden miniature railway? I thought it was until you started walking!
have subscribers PAY FOR TIES & PUT THEIR NAMES ON THE TIES
Winners have simply formed the habit of doing things losers don't like to do.
Is a tie the same thing as a sleeper?
Yes. It's a North American term
Same 3 min of narration used with
2 differenct video clips.
🤣 paint the numbers...5309 under the current car number! 🤣
Awesome video Brother. I wish I was financially and physically able to help with your joy, I mean toys! 🤣🤣🤣
Can I come over and play? 🤣👍✌️
You're blessed with this. I know it's a lot of work, but it ain't work if it's fun. Good luck and God bless. 🙏🙌🌞👍✌️
Hahaha I never noticed that and now I can't unsee it.. good observation 🤪
👍✌️
I like this video !
that is sad that a tree grew too close to the tracks, if you can not move the track, then sad to
say , the tree needs to be removed. it looks like a double so half need to be cut.
👍👍
i really badly want this and turn it into a home on tracks it is small but not too small it is long and it is cute and i love it
paint the ties with used sump oil they'll last longer an keep the termites from eatin them
However, the profile of your track is very narrow...
Great to see the boxmotor is alive !
Hmm, may have to cut the tree down, unless there's another route
Quick question, why is the boxmotor the only one with a knuckle coupler?
It had one at the other end but was removed in a derailment long ago. Its just there for show now.
@@CNW4145 Do you know if the boxmotor was ever meant to pull anything? Also does the horn still work?
Its only powered on 1 truck so it really only has enough power to move itself. But I am going to power the other truck this year, I still probably wont pull anything with it but if needed it could be used for that once the upgrade is done. The horn is non operational at this time.
Uuuuuh sparks and dry leafs makes me nervous u know 🔥 😂
It isn't difficult to do a handstand if you just stand on your hands.
so much rails, so much trains and they dont ride?
Congratulations on you great job!
This is so cool. What is the scale of this RR? You're on your knees inside that car?
Its slightly less than half size.
@@CNW4145 that's so cool.. Biggest I was ever involved with was 15" gauge.Had some 71/2" stuff long time ago.
24" gauge isn't common, thats for sure! But I love it.
@@CNW4145 Oh yes it is, somewhat.;-) State of main and othersin the NEhad a lot of 2" gauge railroads. Also narrow gauge in other parts of the world is/was 2' gauge. but those were scaled correctly full size for2'.
