Thanks Chris, for another great trip down memory lane. My father was a Star Trek fan so I remember the original series being on every Saturday. My child brain could never really get into it though. It was Star Trek IV that changed that for me. I was a suburban Detroit kid and this was on HBO constantly. It was hilarious and the movie production was SO much better than the original. I never heard the Eddie Murphy story before so that was really interesting, would would have been strange for sure. Primed me for my Trekkie years of Next Generation and many many battles playing “Starfleet Arguments” at my local gaming shop. Great times!

I can remember when VCRs were brand new. My Dad bought one because he was going to miss the Michigan v Michigan State game, because of one of my Mom's cousin's wedding. After that, my Dad would set up the VCR to record Star Trek whenever it was on TV. The Voyage Home included. That tape got a lot of use.
My Dad taped nearly every episode of Star Trek until Enterprise went off the air. A few TOS episodes were missing since that was of course in syndication and they didn't play syndicated episodes in release order back then. Taping them all is sort of moot now with DVD and eventually streaming, but it was great to have them all growing up and my Dad still has them all, though the tapes have degraded somewhat. My brother and I would spend entire summers binge watching them all.

I am definitely one of the rare folks who's introduction to Star Trek was THIS film, and it captured my 6-year old soul when I first watched it on VHS (that old purple box, and the incomplete TNG teaser trailer before the movie :P ). OMG, me too, I totally saw them in reverse order afterward :D
And also rare amongst Star Trek fans, I firmly believe that if 6-year-old Me saw Wrath of Khan first, or even Search for Spock first,... I would not have fallen in love with it the same way. Hell, Wrath would have scared the piss out of me, particularly the Ceti Eels. This is also around the same point in my life when the sci-fi/comedy film InnerSpace gave me an almost traumatic reaction, particularly during the heart valve sequence (So much so that it wasn't until I was 16 that I finally forced myself to exposure therapy the trauma away). And then when I was 10, the floating blood sequence during Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country gave me another traumatic reaction (though this one only took one year to purge).
Now in my 40s, Voyage Home still remains my absolute favorite. And beyond that "first one" bias, I still think it most encapsulates what Star Trek is at its heart far better than Wrath of Khan, which... lets be honest with ourselves here, is a fairly simplistic revenge plot, built around Voyager-level contrivance, and even completely shatters all the potential that the episode "Space Seed" (even its very name) implied. Quite frankly, in my older age, I wish Star Trek II was instead The Wrath of Kor, which would have made much more sense. And since we're being honest with ourselves (at least, I hope we are) we only really watch Wrath for the space chases/battles anyway, don't we?
I often wonder how the landscape of the film franchise would have been if Voyage Home was on the pedestal that most put Wrath of Khan at. If we'd have more lighthearted adventure, rather than space battles and revenge plots with every film.

Not sure about it being the best movie, but the scene where Scotty whips up the rotating 3D model of the transparent aluminum molecule by typing in a few commands into a 1983 computer was pure comedy gold. And, the icing on the cake was that Scotty was able to type about 90 words a minute with a two finger style...LOL...guaranteed he would have never even seen a keyboard in his lifetime, much less know the layout of the letters on that keyboard. I bust a gut every time I see that scene.

This is by far my #1 top Trek movie. With nothing against Wrath of Khan or Undiscovered Country, The One With The Whales has a few things going for it. One is its accessibility for non Trek fans. As good as Wrath of Khan is, if you weren't well versed in TOS, you end up like Carol Marcus, "Who *is* Khan, and why is he so wrathy?" With 4, even non fans could watch an enjoyable film - in fact it's how I was able to get my mom to enjoy Trek - just in time for TNG to premiere. Secondly, it's a fun film. I recently got to see it again on the big screen, and just watching the cast have fun in their roles was what stood out. Finally, it contains Kirk Thatcher!! -- And yes, I used that subscription model to get all of TOS on video tape.

But there's also no doubt that Murphy is both a genius and a genuine lover of Trek. One might hope that there will come a day when he might be invited to actually have a role in a Trek film which would give him his comedic due while also adding something substantial to the franchize.

IMO, Star Trek IV is the best one out of the series. You should really watch the movie with the commentary from Nimoy and William S.

Jo you and I are more alike. This was the first Stat Trek I saw. At the time I hated Star Trek but my brother wanted to record this movie. So I watched and became addicted.
Next was st5 as it was out in theaters at the time. Then I saw the rest of the movie's in order. The series was a problem since it was only on at midnight and I had school.

That movie was a total blow to my arrogance and taught me humility; a probe that uninhabited our technology without even trying and a message from a higher intelligence that is not for humanity but for the whales.

I agree the best of all the TOS crew movies. Wrath of Khan and Uniscovered country follow IMHO. A great movie, allowed all the cast to shine. Scotty's Hello Computer, Checkov's nuclear wessels, McCoy's dialisis! What is the dark ages? Wonderful.

Learning Eddie Murphy is a huge star Trek fan gives me a different perspective on Timothy Zahn's Trekkie character in the Eddie Murphy film Daddy Daycare. 😊❤

To me this will always be the preachy/slapstick save the whales movie and the one I like least from TOS movies.

Lol! First Choice! I remember First Choice vs Super Channel. My parents were too cheap to subscribe…watched many “scrambled” R rated movies back in the day. Thanks for the memories 👍🏻

    1) Had Doctor (Commander) McCoy altered the 23rd century, at least slightly, by giving her that pill from the future?
    2) If I am not mistaken, ST #4, #11, and #12 are the only Trek films to have demonstrated 'broad appeal' - indeed #12 (Into Darkness; 2013) was a bigger hit overseas than in US market.
3 ) By choosing to return for this film, Meyer (MY-yer) implicitly acknowledged that his initial negative view of The Search for Spock was obtuse (misguided); he at first disliked the very notion of resurrecting Spock after his noble end in the prior film.

I don't know if its the best of the original six, but I like it a great deal, along with The Search For Spock and The Undiscovered Country. I never cared for the first two or the fifth movie; they just weren't interesting to me.

Never was a Trekie, it always seems like a silly show to me (I love Stargate which is simillarly silly tbh) but even even I saw this movie and loved it.

I do think that Star Trek VI is an objectively better movie; it has a move exciting story with political intrigue, mystery and a thrilling finale. That said, I actually enjoy watching Star Trek IV more because it's just so entertaining.
