I like how each crew member had their own moment to shine in the movie. I still can't get enough of Bones in the hospital and Chekov looking for "nuclear wessels."
Without a DOUBT, one of the best. They got humor right, and Chekov was great. Loved it and my God man I love when bones started arguing with the doctor.
My dad took my two brothers and I to see this in the theater when it came out (around Christmas). I was 9 years old, and it was my first introduction to Star Trek. Always had a soft spot for this one, since.
My first exposure was TNG, but I think this movie might have been the first Trek film I ever saw. Its been a lot of years, so I don't remember it very clearly.
I saw a day one premiere showing, and the reveal of the Enterprise A got a rousing cheer and standing ovation. Still gives me chills thinking about it.
i love every beat of this movie. It's well directed, acted, edited, written and screenplayed from beginning to end but more so especially when they're back in the 80s. Also Catherine Hicks played her role perfectly and gorgeously.
Star Trek 4 is not only my favorite Trek movie, it's also one of my favorite movies of all time. I casually watched the original TV show, but loved the movies (including the motion picture), and then loved the Next Generation (but never saw any of their movies). I love them all - Star Wars, Star Trek, Battle Star Galactica, Buck Rogers, and Galaxy Quest of course!
Thanks Chris, for another great trip down memory lane. My father was a Star Trek fan so I remember the original series being on every Saturday. My child brain could never really get into it though. It was Star Trek IV that changed that for me. I was a suburban Detroit kid and this was on HBO constantly. It was hilarious and the movie production was SO much better than the original. I never heard the Eddie Murphy story before so that was really interesting, would would have been strange for sure. Primed me for my Trekkie years of Next Generation and many many battles playing “Starfleet Arguments” at my local gaming shop. Great times!
I can remember when VCRs were brand new. My Dad bought one because he was going to miss the Michigan v Michigan State game, because of one of my Mom's cousin's wedding. After that, my Dad would set up the VCR to record Star Trek whenever it was on TV. The Voyage Home included. That tape got a lot of use. My Dad taped nearly every episode of Star Trek until Enterprise went off the air. A few TOS episodes were missing since that was of course in syndication and they didn't play syndicated episodes in release order back then. Taping them all is sort of moot now with DVD and eventually streaming, but it was great to have them all growing up and my Dad still has them all, though the tapes have degraded somewhat. My brother and I would spend entire summers binge watching them all.
It had crossover appeal. You did not need to be a Trek fan to enjoy this movie. It’s had a fish out of water story. It wasn’t violent so the whole family can see it. Plus there was a positive message.
I watched this Religiously, and all of the Treks. ST IV hit when I was a 7 year old who visited the Monteray Aquarium every other weekend. My mom has lost so many watches there LOL. But that set and local, including all of SFz before Dems turned it into porto potty filled with needles, before that it was mu cute childhood. So was the redwoods and many parks. RIP California
I've been watching the movies again on HBO Max. I have to say, IV is now my favorite of the orginal six movies. Its a really fun and charming movie. Just a very entertaining and enjoyable movie with heart.
ST IV was my first taste of Trek. I remember seeing it at the drive in along with another movie that I can't recall. ST IV was the bait and TNG was the hook. I've been watching Trek ever since.
Even as a kid who saw this when it was new, I knew it was special. To this day it's right up there with Wrath of Khan for me. Two totally different films tonally, but both equally enjoyable. I also enjoy 3 and 6, but 2 and 4 are my favorites
It broke, quite by accident, the trilogy equation. Trilogies are always the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd movie in a franchise. Star Trek has the unique Middle Trilogy of 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
This was a great movie-going experience. The hospital chase scene that culminated with the crew transported to the park had the audience applauding. Star Trek IV will always be my favorite movie.
I LOVE THE TREK TRILOGY. STAR TREK 2 TO STAR TREK 4 AND OF COURSE THE SPECTACULAR STAR TREK 6 .....WHICH WAS THE BEST SEND-OFF FOR THE ORIGINAL CREW EVER!
I saw it with my whole family over Thanksgiving break when it came out and I was just 9. It was such a great film, I even got a lot of the more high brow jokes and had a great time with the fam. Nice memory.
I am definitely one of the rare folks who's introduction to Star Trek was THIS film, and it captured my 6-year old soul when I first watched it on VHS (that old purple box, and the incomplete TNG teaser trailer before the movie :P ). OMG, me too, I totally saw them in reverse order afterward :D And also rare amongst Star Trek fans, I firmly believe that if 6-year-old Me saw Wrath of Khan first, or even Search for Spock first,... I would not have fallen in love with it the same way. Hell, Wrath would have scared the piss out of me, particularly the Ceti Eels. This is also around the same point in my life when the sci-fi/comedy film InnerSpace gave me an almost traumatic reaction, particularly during the heart valve sequence (So much so that it wasn't until I was 16 that I finally forced myself to exposure therapy the trauma away). And then when I was 10, the floating blood sequence during Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country gave me another traumatic reaction (though this one only took one year to purge). Now in my 40s, Voyage Home still remains my absolute favorite. And beyond that "first one" bias, I still think it most encapsulates what Star Trek is at its heart far better than Wrath of Khan, which... lets be honest with ourselves here, is a fairly simplistic revenge plot, built around Voyager-level contrivance, and even completely shatters all the potential that the episode "Space Seed" (even its very name) implied. Quite frankly, in my older age, I wish Star Trek II was instead The Wrath of Kor, which would have made much more sense. And since we're being honest with ourselves (at least, I hope we are) we only really watch Wrath for the space chases/battles anyway, don't we? I often wonder how the landscape of the film franchise would have been if Voyage Home was on the pedestal that most put Wrath of Khan at. If we'd have more lighthearted adventure, rather than space battles and revenge plots with every film.
Star Trek 4 did so well in the Theater in 1986,that I remember that the VHS video retailed for 29.95 which was a bargain since most video’s retailed for 39.95,59.95 & believe it or not 79.95!!!
I remember reading Eddie Murphy was supposed to play in this movie as this big-time conspiracy theorist. Also there was a scene where Sulu was supposed to meet one of his ancestors. In 80s San Francisco. But the kid got stage-fright so they had to cut the scene because of time.
the EDDIE MURPHY rumor is a faux story just like the one about MARLON WAYANS was supposed to be in BATMAN 1989 or BATMAN RETURNS EXCEPT they were both debunked EDDIE MURPHY was filming the movie THE GOLDEN CHILD MARLON WAYANS was an unknown so there's no chance it would happen
Not sure about it being the best movie, but the scene where Scotty whips up the rotating 3D model of the transparent aluminum molecule by typing in a few commands into a 1983 computer was pure comedy gold. And, the icing on the cake was that Scotty was able to type about 90 words a minute with a two finger style...LOL...guaranteed he would have never even seen a keyboard in his lifetime, much less know the layout of the letters on that keyboard. I bust a gut every time I see that scene.
It's hard to put it into words what joy it was to have been a TOS fan at the time and walk into the theater not having any idea what to expect and see this. I think I had already seen Wrath of Khan and TSFS but I didn't see them at the theater. Even though Trek had never disappointed me up to that point, I was still bracing for disappointment because I already knew nothing lasts forever.
It was DEFINITELY #4 about the humpback whales that caught my attention. I was never a big fan of Star Trek, but watched old episodes and movies because of it. I'm not quite a "Trekie" now, but do love the show.
I have always loved this movie, seeing it as the movie that The Motion Picture really should have been. It clearly takes its cue from The Motion Picture, principally the Earth threatening alien probe, but uses it in a wholly different way, opting for a mixture of comedy and adventure instead of the boring spectacle of the first movie.
This movie is the most accessible for casual fans. It’s well paced and the fish out of water trope played well with the original cast. Got to see all the films with my parents sans the first one. A couple were even at drive ins. Got to see wrath of Khan at a drive in at the Mojave desert when it was out. Very memorable.
I only saw it once, in the theater as a teen, and really enjoyed it, especially for the humor. The Chekov "nuclear wessel" line and Spock pinching the dude with the boombox on the bus stuck in my memory.
Such a great movie. BTW, the reason Shatner got to Direc is because he and Nimoy had a favored nations clause in their contracts… They had equal salary and equal opportunity so when Nimoy got the directors chair, they had to give it to Shatner.
Absolutely the best, and most entertaining! Loved the blend of the future with present time. So many great and memorable scenes, and lines. The pizza scene is one of the best movie scenes ever!
I remember the movie Magic special that showed how the full size whales in Star Trek 4 we're just remote-controlled puppets in water. I heard that PETA demanded that the whales should be released and the VFX team how does the puppets and said, "Here they are."
PETA's a bunch of idiots with nothing better to do with their time, than to worry about animals' feelings. I agree that we should be kind to animals, but we should never treat them like people. That goes too far, in my opinion.
The plot is so batsh*t crazy that when I described it to my wife and mother in law (who are in no way Star Trek fans) they thought I was messing with them 😂 Even I had to laugh a few times describing it to them. But damnit, somehow they pull it together! I still prefer Undiscovered County, but this certainly is one of the best of the series and a highlight of 80s cinema.
What makes IV stand out is that each of the original cast get a decent amount of screen time and that you see them in normal life as opposed to a crew member carrying out their duties. Plus, it's a very funny film. If you want space battles only, then II is more your bag.
Great content! ST:IV was the film that made me a total Trekkie, finally (though, I loved TMP)! A minor correction to your facts: there was no 'USS Challenger' space shuttle. While it did have a registry number (OV-099), it did not have the USS prefix. Its name does hail from the 19th Century HMS Challenger, but that's as close as it gets.
I'm pretty sure The Wrath of Khan, rightly, gets more love. I didn't enjoy The Voyage Home much as a kid, enough that I think I've only seen it once as an adult, whereas I've gone back to other films that most consider bad (e.g. V) a couple of times. Maybe I should try it again. I'm not sure I'll feel that differently, though. And I'd probably spend most of the time wondering why I wasn't watching II, III or VI instead.
Hehe I like 5 too :) I am not a big fan of the voyage home either! It’s missing being out among the stars… i always loved being in space to go where no man has gone before… anything on earth is just boaring in comparison
This is by far my #1 top Trek movie. With nothing against Wrath of Khan or Undiscovered Country, The One With The Whales has a few things going for it. One is its accessibility for non Trek fans. As good as Wrath of Khan is, if you weren't well versed in TOS, you end up like Carol Marcus, "Who *is* Khan, and why is he so wrathy?" With 4, even non fans could watch an enjoyable film - in fact it's how I was able to get my mom to enjoy Trek - just in time for TNG to premiere. Secondly, it's a fun film. I recently got to see it again on the big screen, and just watching the cast have fun in their roles was what stood out. Finally, it contains Kirk Thatcher!! -- And yes, I used that subscription model to get all of TOS on video tape.
I am really loving this series of retrospectives. Incredibly well done! In hindsight, l am very glad that S.T. IV did not end up becoming an Eddie Murphy movie. But there's also no doubt that Murphy is both a genius and a genuine lover of Trek. One might hope that there will come a day when he might be invited to actually have a role in a Trek film which would give him his comedic due while also adding something substantial to the franchize.
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is the second best film from the franches for me The motion picture being the best as that's a proper star trek film to how it should be made shame we didn't get anymore like it. Maybe we might get eddie murphy in a strange new worlds episode
Jo you and I are more alike. This was the first Stat Trek I saw. At the time I hated Star Trek but my brother wanted to record this movie. So I watched and became addicted. Next was st5 as it was out in theaters at the time. Then I saw the rest of the movie's in order. The series was a problem since it was only on at midnight and I had school.
That movie was a total blow to my arrogance and taught me humility; a probe that uninhabited our technology without even trying and a message from a higher intelligence that is not for humanity but for the whales.
I agree the best of all the TOS crew movies. Wrath of Khan and Uniscovered country follow IMHO. A great movie, allowed all the cast to shine. Scotty's Hello Computer, Checkov's nuclear wessels, McCoy's dialisis! What is the dark ages? Wonderful.
Learning Eddie Murphy is a huge star Trek fan gives me a different perspective on Timothy Zahn's Trekkie character in the Eddie Murphy film Daddy Daycare. 😊❤
Lol! First Choice! I remember First Choice vs Super Channel. My parents were too cheap to subscribe…watched many “scrambled” R rated movies back in the day. Thanks for the memories 👍🏻
1) Had Doctor (Commander) McCoy altered the 23rd century, at least slightly, by giving her that pill from the future? 2) If I am not mistaken, ST #4, #11, and #12 are the only Trek films to have demonstrated 'broad appeal' - indeed #12 (Into Darkness; 2013) was a bigger hit overseas than in US market. 3 ) By choosing to return for this film, Meyer (MY-yer) implicitly acknowledged that his initial negative view of The Search for Spock was obtuse (misguided); he at first disliked the very notion of resurrecting Spock after his noble end in the prior film.
"Well, logically speaking, Captain, I am the strongest and most intelligent person aboard this vessel -- yet I am only second in command. I should be Captain. And I'm also a better director than you!" -- David Alan Grier as Spock in The Wrath of Farrakhan, In Living Color Damn straight!!
I don't know if its the best of the original six, but I like it a great deal, along with The Search For Spock and The Undiscovered Country. I never cared for the first two or the fifth movie; they just weren't interesting to me.
Never was a Trekie, it always seems like a silly show to me (I love Stargate which is simillarly silly tbh) but even even I saw this movie and loved it.
I do think that Star Trek VI is an objectively better movie; it has a move exciting story with political intrigue, mystery and a thrilling finale. That said, I actually enjoy watching Star Trek IV more because it's just so entertaining.
In the Kelvin Timeline.. Eddie Murphy is a science officer that saved Planet earth from the mysterious whale probe with The Starship Enterprise crew 5:00
Nimoy was a very intelligent and thoughtful filmmaker. Such a talent and I'm glad he was able to get a chance behind the camera.
Nimoy really doesn’t get enough credit as a director.
There was a lot of Nimoy behind Spock and Vulcans in general. Great casting pay off.
I like how each crew member had their own moment to shine in the movie. I still can't get enough of Bones in the hospital and Chekov looking for "nuclear wessels."
"Nine, Five, Wictor, Wictor, Two"
I read that the cop Chekov was talking to in that scene had no idea this was a movie at first.
Hell, his entire interrogation scene! Brilliant!
@@rogermazuca4582 Thats just blasphemy.

Always been my favorite of the series. Also this is the only trek film where nobody gets killed.
This movie is so good you can watch it again and again..
it's a time travelling comedy with no actual villain. It's popular because it's funny to the general audience and is easy to understand.
I liked when Scotty and McCoy went to the factory and "professor Scott" showed the manager how to make liquid aluminum. "keyboard - how quaint"
"Hello computer.";)
Transparent aluminum.
This one is pure gold. I catch myself saying "computer, hello computer" when this machine is slow. ...One of the best moments in all of cinema.
" _My friends.... We've come home.._ "
I adore this movie.
I love Star Trek IV, I had it on VHS and watched it a zillion times... But Wrath of Khan is hands down the best Star Trek movie.
I saw a day one premiere showing, and the reveal of the Enterprise A got a rousing cheer and standing ovation. Still gives me chills thinking about it.
The punk rocker had a cameo in Picard season 2 who when asked to turn the jukebox does so
Star trek the voyage home is one of my favourite movies.
i love every beat of this movie. It's well directed, acted, edited, written and screenplayed from beginning to end but more so especially when they're back in the 80s. Also Catherine Hicks played her role perfectly and gorgeously.

Hehe I like 5 too :) I am not a big fan of the voyage home either! It’s missing being out among the stars… i always loved being in space to go where no man has gone before… anything on earth is just boaring in comparison
The was the first Star Trek movie I ever saw.
I love the TOS and the movies for TOS.
Yes sir. Absolutely the best. Most fun and entertaining of all. And that isn't easy to say.
This movie is definitely the funniest and one of the most enjoyable Star Trek movies
I like Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home
Best trek film. So much fun
Had this on VHS when i was younger and it was always more than the wait for it to rewind each time i watched it lol
The most accessible and fun! My dear dad’s favorite Trek movie ❤
IMO, Star Trek IV is the best one out of the series. You should really watch the movie with the commentary from Nimoy and William S.
Wonderful.
This was my first Trek movie I saw in theaters
Its my personal favorite but You can make an argument for Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country which I also love.
Learning Eddie Murphy is a huge star Trek fan gives me a different perspective on Timothy Zahn's Trekkie character in the Eddie Murphy film Daddy Daycare. 😊❤
No love for Scotty speaking into a computer mouse?!
How quaint.
To me this will always be the preachy/slapstick save the whales movie and the one I like least from TOS movies.
Lol! First Choice! I remember First Choice vs Super Channel. My parents were too cheap to subscribe…watched many “scrambled” R rated movies back in the day. Thanks for the memories 👍🏻
Second best. The Wrath of Khan was the best.
Love this and kahn
Great video about a fantastic movie.
First Contact is the best. But The Voyage Home is very underrated and very great
It was the perfect ST movie because it showed how the characters would fare in the (then) modern world...
Definitely my favorite Star Trek movie
"Well, logically speaking, Captain, I am the strongest and most intelligent person aboard this vessel -- yet I am only second in command. I should be Captain. And I'm also a better director than you!"
-- David Alan Grier as Spock in The Wrath of Farrakhan, In Living Color
Damn straight!!
If Star Trek II, II and IV were your introduction to the franchise then the original series must have been a revelation to you!
U mean II, *III* , and IV?
@@bonghunezhou5051 U know what I mean! II, III and IV! Enjoy!
I do think that Star Trek VI is an objectively better movie; it has a move exciting story with political intrigue, mystery and a thrilling finale. That said, I actually enjoy watching Star Trek IV more because it's just so entertaining.
Three words for you. Wrath, of, Khan!
In the Kelvin Timeline.. Eddie Murphy is a science officer that saved Planet earth from the mysterious whale probe with The Starship Enterprise crew 5:00
I saw this movie for the first time too on First Choice
Fun show!
