7:10 As a T150 owner, I know that smell 😅 I wrote to Thurstmaster when I first bought my wheel and they said in response, to let them know if the wheel failed or if the smell got worse. Thankfully, the wheel hasn't broke in the 5 years I've had it.
Hey Doc, I'm a new viewer to your content and have really enjoyed your approach to performing reviews. You've managed to balance entertainment with substance in such a way that makes the 9 minutes invested in this review very worth while to me. So much so that I clicked the subscribe button ... cheers!
Great video! Thank you. Would love to see their paddles in action too. I am thinking about this as an entry level without breaking the bank, then upgrade to something later next year.
I got mine a few days ago , I have to say I dont see what the big difference is from the TS -XW? Maybe I'm doing something wrong ? I have it on performance mode with the damper at 5%...It's very smooth racing ovals , is that how its supposed to be ? I don't feel the "weight" I felt with the TS -XW? Anyway maybe that's how it supposed to be and I just have to get used to it? What settings in game should I use ? Thanks
The 'hot smell' you're smelling isn't normal, at least mine doesn't have that. You might want to contact support about that.. The T818 and SF1000 is a great combination. The only thing that sucks is that you can't set a bite point with the SF1000, making the dual clutch a bit redundant.
@TheCarDoc1 I'm a long time user of wheels...not thrustmaster or any DD but I do believe that smells you mentioned may likely be the lubricant or electronic devices grease used somewhere inside....like the motor...which when heated results in the smell. Of course they may not tell you because it might not be healthy. It's also one of reasons I use a high velocity room fan to direct effects away and of course keep me cool. Hope you can let me know how it's performing after a year if...you still use it. Great video
Cheers for this video man! First video of yours i've watched and it answered a lot of questions :) looking at the T818 upgrade with the SF1000 wheel from the TS-XW set up. Cheers mate!
Really great video my friend but It would have been cool if you had also said that it's only available for PC players as it's not available for consoles.
Nice review but I decided to change ecosystem and got with the Moza R12 + KS wheel. Thanks for the review. I had a question about the SF1000 though. What's your long term opinion? I thought the durability was quite poor. Stickers and the grip peeling off after just a few months, even with gloves. Wondered if it was just me.
I switched from Thrustmaster to Moza! I have the R9 Base and the GS steering wheel and I have to say that the GS steering wheel makes a clear difference to my SF1000!
Don't put blocks of steel near it! I had a 15mm thick spacer cut to make it higher on my desk. It moved the stator ring inside the drive and made it scrape against the shaft. Magnetics and all that stuff. My bad.
Figure maybe you don't see a stop button on the side like that on other wheelbases because you have to reach for it through/past the wheel that may possibly going nuts. Seems like a huge oversight in design. 🤷🏻♂️
Fees like all Thrustmaster wheels have a smell somehow. The T300 does smells a lot when starting to overheat. Do you think the T818 works fine on console using a drive hub? Thanks
Hey Doc, Im running an TM TX base at the moment and during a certain time while racing i feel a lot of FFB fainting away, is was wondering did you feel anything like that ? Cause when im doing a hour race on Spa, i start to notice that i have a big lost of FFB and i want to upgrade to the new TM DD but if it has the same problem i dont actually want to buy it and switch to some other DD. And did you maybe figured out what the smell was ?
That my friend is due to motor getting too hot 🥵.. my t300 does the same after an intense session… I’d suggest trying the FAN ON all the time … press Mode+Option button you’ll see the light flash once … and the fan should kick in … should help with your issue
I had an older Thrustmaster. Jumped to Simucube Pro and now Logitech G Pro. I love the G Pro FF feeling and Trueforce. Only thing I hate is there is currently no extra wheels. Luckily, LogiRich kind of hinted that they are coming soon in the Logitech forums. Praying they do soon. If not, I’m jumping back to my simucube.
I feel the exact same way, ive got a few DD bases and the logitech slowly falls out of favour every passing minute without extra wheels! Thanks for commenting 😁
Same here. I have a Fanatec dd pro with F1 wheel and the Logitech G pro. Currently i use the Fanatec because Logitech have no other wheel. If Logitech don't come with an extra wheel i sell the Logitech.
@@TheCarDoc1 I love it. Especially Trueforce. It feels weird to play without it enabled. 11mm FF is enough for my driving preferences. Downside is no extra wheels.
Problem with t818/thrustmaster right now is the pedals! I rather use fanatec 80€ pedals then thrustmasters 200€ pedals. They really need to create modern metal pedals and new wheels for the t818
I need advice please guys should i go for the Fanatec CSL DD 5nm without loadcell pedals, Thrustmaster T300 ferrari 599x evo edition, or Thrustmaster T248? Thanks I will read all responses. I have never owned a wheel and im super into racing games. My budget is about £400/$500/€460
I drive in IRacing. I looking something for amateur weekend racing. This movie wos wery helply for me i am in trustmaster ecosystem. I think i no need nothing stronger than t818 after this maybay i hunt for sim pedals sprint yet or something familiar because i use tlcm with breake mode. But i looking something with beter pracision. Thanks this material is wery helply for me. Like und SUB for U mate.
Well saying that it doesn't have flex at all but not showing it on video is not much of a help is it? You should've showed us because on all other videos I saw about this wheel it had flex and it wasn't like the amount of flex like the CSL DD with the plastic quick release it was way way more than that, and they didn't just tell us it had flex, they SHOWED us. Other than that, the smell is a signature Thrustmaster wheel base thing, all their bases have this Electrical Burn Smell to it.
I mean, I’ve owned a CSL DD and that flexxed. My T818 definitely doesn’t flex. Thats an idea for a future video though, and good to know re the burning smell 😅
Forget GT DD Pro gt wheel and pedals + qr (mediocre at best). You'll need to upgrade them quickly. After upgrades, welcome to the Fanatec ecosystem model, it will be salty.
Moza softwarte is FAR superior! T818+pedals+wheel = $1000+. Moza R5 = $530..far better value. I only use 60% FFB strength with my R5 and iut performs flawless!
In my country, this piece of plastic junk is more expensive than a simagic alpha mini + GT4 Carbon wheel combo. (Malaysia) So it was obvious what I bought.
Thrustmaster rubbish not wanting to give you cancer with toxic fumes? What's new. My T300 did the same thing, then it died shortly after. Worst QC on the market.
The "Hot Smell" is perfectly normal, the T818 is so realistic, they are pumping tire smell into your living room.
I found it new for $420 haha trashmaster, but I didn't buy it, I'm waiting for my MOZA R9 now.

Just got mine in the US and I'm in awe at the difference in responsiveness between the TSXW and T818!
I’m running a TX i definitely wanna get this because I have a thrustmaster stuff but I’m not sure about it
Its quite a significant step up! The TSXW is an awesome wheel but the T818 is another level of feedback quality
@@TheCarDoc1 hopefully I can’t get my hands on one of these in the near future. thanks for the review

Yeah I smelled that hot electronics smell with T300 and TS-PC, Its Thrustmasters signature smell :D
Interesting video. Possibly about time I said goodbye to my G29.

Do you know if I will need the cockpit mounting kit in order to be able to mount the T818 to the Playseat F1?
Not sure sorry, might be worth contacting Playseat.. if in doubt, might be worth getting anyway?
