New Clee used to serve the East Marsh area of Grimsby when it was thriving with a real density of housing. In fact my Mum was born about 20 metres from the station in 1937! Then guess what... town planners decided to pull all the houses down in the 60s/70s and killed the community (...Grimsby in a microcosm sadly). Amazingly the station survived but serves no-one any more (save the odd match at the local football ground at Blundell Park).
I got off of a train at New Clee back in 2009 and it sticks in my memory as the most desolate and neglected railway station I have ever visited. Looking at your video I suspect there as been a bit of sprucing up since then, but not a lot. At the time I had just started a new job delivering and collecting hire cars all over the country, traveling by train between drop-offs and pickups. On this occasion, just two weeks into the job, somebody in the office had done a route plan for me which resulted in my kicking my heals for over two ours at some remote country station (I can't remember which one) waiting for a connection that stopped at New Clee. So I wasn't best pleased when I got there only to realise I could have stayed on my earlier train to Grimsby Docks and walked the last kilometer and thereby got home much sooner. But it did teach me to, in future, do my own route planning!
8:51 "It's ten past ten and I've got nothing to do except wait fifty minutes for my train. And there's no local shop, and I really need to go and have a ..." You know, it rather sounds like Geoff is having a New Clee meltdown.
Yay our Brigg Line is mentioned. New Clee Station is the nearest station to Grimsby Town football club, the line between Grimsby Town and Cleethorpes was singled in 1985, and now causes logistical problems because of pathing issues . East Midlands Trains/Railway we're supposed to take over the Barton line about 5 years ago, the current setup of local services in the area are quite a joke, the politicians and local councils idea of improvements are direct services to London, the difference in services and facilities South of the Humber compared to North of the Humber is quite shocking
Oh my days I must have just missed you. God you were brave hanging around that area.😬 especially in 2017, a Lady sticking her arm out might have got you some more personal attention. Back in the day it was a storage area for rolling stock and was full of tracks. As you go through GY station you can still see the other bridge where track used to split and go to Louth.
'New Clee' comes from the ancient Grimbarian (local dialect) meaning 'No Clean', which would explain why the area and station were covered in litter. It's true! :)
Her first time sticking out her hand to stop a train, ah it feels like it was only yesterday when you traveled to every station in Britain. That was some journey
I honestly read the title as like "New - Clee Request Stop" and thought it was a station that had been turned into a request stop. Still enjoyed the video after I realized my mistake!
The Barton line was part of Northern but when Transpennine took over the Cleethorpss to Manchester route it became isolated from the rest of the Northern network, except on Saturdays when the three trains a week to Sheffield run. (On weekdays Northern now comes no nearer than Scunthorpe and (across the Humber) Hull. Consequently TPE staff based at Cleethorpes operate the service. East Midland do also operate to Cleethorpes, from Lincoln.
Great video Geoff , Tell you something though . Cleethorpes back in the day used to have the Valenta 125 HST direct to London . There is a video on You Tube where this HST travels from Grimsby to Cleethorpes , It's amazing to see . It curves it's way through the back streets of Grimsby with that beautiful soundtrack engine sound wanting to increase speed , It's a MUST SEE
The Barton Line, on which these class 153 DMUs run, is very interesting - probably unique actually - in the sense that East Midlands Railway units are used on the Northern Trains route, which are staffed by TransPennine Express. I think it's a logistical thing because TransPennine has onboard staff based at Cleethorpes where these services originate, but I don't think Northern does. As for the EMR link, who knows?!
Happens elsewhere too. For example, here in the Netherlands in the Almere-Zeewolde area, there's bus route 160, which belongs to the franchise OV Regio IJsselmond, which in turn is owned by Connexxion (and higher up Transdev), but bus route 160 is actually operated by TCR (which isn't even active in the region aside from this route) and previously by Keolis (which operates a different franchise in the area). Now at least TCR uses their own buses, but Keolis used buses from various different franchises across the country. Oh, and despite different operators, the tariff commuters pay is the OV Regio IJsselmond one. So just as much a mess as this UK railway route lol
Another fun example (albeit a bit different, but still shows the messiness) is the bus route between Hulst (Netherlands) and Belgium. It's operated by both Connexxion (Netherlands) and De Lijn (Belgium), both alternating every hour. Now of course, multiple operators on one route happens elsewhere in the country too and even in the UK, but the peculiar thing with this bus route is that Connexxion buses use the Dutch payment system while De Lijn buses use the Belgium payment system (which is also more expensive). So if you're Dutch and the bus that turns up is a De Lijn bus and you don't want to pay the De Lijn tariff, you have to wait another hour for a Connexxion bus to show up. And the same goes for Belgian citizens that don't have a Dutch OV-Chipkaart (smart card) (De Lijn doesn't use smart cards).
Regarding your question at the 3:18 Passenger services on the Barton line are provided by Northern however the trains crews are provided by TPE as Northern doesn't have any train crew based in Cleethorpes to run the services. EMR class 153 trains are used to provide additional capacity for social distancing on the line as well as to allow Northern to free up their own trains to boost their capacity elsewhere. The 153's are stored so they wouldn't have been used on EMR's network anyway so a smart idea by someone in the railway to use these units. I did read somewhere a few years back that Crosscountry (owned by arriva who ran Northern) did the partnership to encourage more people to travel on that line. XC have actually done quite a few sponsorships that were on lines on Northern lines. I suspect they used XC as XC has more customers and obviously more money in their own pocket when people travel using XC to get to those lines.
I've also heard is said that XC are involved in all the community rail partnerships as they are the closest thing to a national operator. How true that is I don't know though.
@@thryduulf Not sure but business-wise it would make sense that XC/Arriva would sponsor/ advertise travel on those lines, as it gives good PR for themselves as well as encouraging people to travel on that line and to use those lines who do you use to travel. Answer = Crosscountry. It's pretty much a win-win for Arriva as they get extra customers on XC's trains as well as the sponsorship line which for majority are Arriva owned TOC's. (Obviously before Northern lost their franchise).
It's the stop for Ramsdens (Home Interiors) Superstore!!! Goodness how I felt for you Geoff. As you braced the Humber Breezes, I knew that tea and shelter were just a few steps away and on the second floor of the store there is a FREE tea and coffee lounge!!! I admire your dedication... great vlog!
New Clee is an infamous hot-spot for trespass and fatalities hence why the local BTP have it on their rounds. Until very recently New Clee didn't actually have lighting at all so as well as being a request stop it was a request stop in daylight hours only. After dusk the trains didn't call at all.
You asked, I found on Wiki under Barton Line: Passenger services on the line are provided by Northern however the trains crews are provided by TransPennine Express as Northern does not have any train crew based in Cleethorpes to run the service. Passenger services on the line was due to switch to East Midlands Railway from the start of the new franchise in August 2019, but this transfer has been deferred until at least December 2020.
Remember taking a football special in the 80s from London to see a game at Grimsby and using New Clee station. Train was so long had to walk back through most carriages to alight as I think only 2 or 3 fitted on the platform !
The station originally had two platforms, since reduced to one and is served by trains only on request on the Barton line between Cleethorpes and Barton-Upon-Humber, is due to transfer to East Midlands Railway at an unknown date. The Barton line train service is currently being run by TransPenine Express under contract to Arriva Rail North. There are nine return journeys each weekday and four on summer holidays and Sundays between Cleethorpes and Barton.
If you are old enough you will remember that the government said that hiding under a bench would protect you from Nuclear fall out; it is my opinion that the Bench at the station would be about as effective protection from New Clee fall out as the governments advice.
Would i describe myself as a huge railway enthusiast - Nope !! But, do I love watching this channel - You bet !! Enthusiastically presented, & crammed full of great content.... Thank you.
I’m curious, how are these request stops taken into account in the timetables? Like surely there’s at least a minute difference when the train stops vs. when it doesn’t. Is that already in the timetable, like when it doesn’t stop it arrives early at the next stop and waits there a bit, or is it assumed it’s not stopping so sometimes it’s a bit late? Maybe obvious to someone, but not to me.
Not 100% sure but I think most request stops are on relatively non-busy lines often with limited frequency. They're not economically crucial rush-hour commuter lines where 1 or 2 minutes either way matters.
All railway timetables have built in 'recovery time' which allows trains to arrive at the terminus on time even if delayed. Express services will not have much, but any service with a request stop is already deemed to be a total Meh! service, so having a timetable that includes stopping at all request stops just means it arrives early if nobody sticks an arm out.
For TfW's request stops, each one is given a 30 second dwell time at the station. Obviously stopping a train and letting people on/off will take longer than 30 seconds (1 minute on average) however TfW would expect that people wouldn't get on/off at each stop so going passing other request stops would bring the train back on time. Back in ATW days (I think either in Wales and Border days), the request stops you can miss the train if it arrives too early (I think the record was 7 minutes) but nowadays, the train is only timetabled to pass 2-3 mins early so as long as you are there 5+ mins early it is impossible to miss it. One of the EMR staff once said that trains can't leave stations early as the system counts it being cancelled if it leaves 2 mins early. It has to leave on time (leeway of 1 minute in case of the station board time is desynced). Only exception is request stops, as their timings aren't always recorded on the system due to location (example TfW's penychain to Machynlleth line is an example).
@@backblaise1255 On a lot of lines that have request stops, there are several request stops, so it will often even out that trains will stop at some but not all of them. If they don't have any requests to stop then they can continue at a leisurely pace to the terminus and save a bit of fuel (do they actually do that?).
Nearly my local, I live in grimsby. Northern are pulling out of the barton line hense its emr now as its easier to get the unit to Lincoln for maintenance.
Had the pleasure(?) of visiting New Clee... Wondered what the red box thing on the short pole was? Looks like a small siren. Also has a blooming great big Aldi nearby which generated a lot of traffic.
the tpe staff is used on the line because there is no northern staff based on the line and the east Midlands stock us used so they can facilitate the extra car they have to put on because of covid.
Oh no ive been wanting you to come to my home town since I started watching you qnd when you finally do im not bloody there. Typical 😂🤣😂would of loved to have met up
Closest stop to Grimsby Town Football Club Blundell Park yet few supporters use it. 10 mins closer than Cleethorpes. I’ve managed to get the guard on Transpennine to stop here unscheduled when late for a match - could be the only person ever to get off the train from Doncaster at the station apart from football specials!
Like I usually do with the Least Used Station & Request Stops I looked it up on google maps. That very few use it comes as no surprise looking at the map. Sure, there's a residential area within easy walking distance - if there was a way to walk there! The local planners sure have made sure to get the station as inaccessible as possible.
I thought this was a new request station at Clee first of all! 😆 Great video as ever, not only does it have an abandoned platform but at 7:35 even part of the existing platform can be seen as abandoned!
So when Geoff stick his hand out to stop the train, the driver had no choice but to stop, causing a nuclear reaction. Does that mean the driver became the New Clee Reactor?
I've ridden in this train in the summer on a sunday, it definitely does not stop at new clee unless requested xD also just realised, they are using east midlands trains. In the last 6 years where ive been using the train, ive only seen northern ones
Well the seat is a New Clee blue glow that surrounding you there Geoff! But you New Clee-ry got some nice funny puns there. If all else fails how about New-Clee Benchmarking 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ And on the New Clee Bombshell it was another lovely request stop video to watch.
Visited the station on New Years Day 2016. No trains running as the line was closed for engineering works. The entire area of the docks and New Clee was like a ghost town, well except for the numerous seagulls.
Interesting fact for you. When the old 125 service to London ran from Cleethorpes in the 80’s they had to have smaller carriages made because for the tight bend just after new Clee.
Those were the days! I had a spell going to London once a month. Caught the early train on Monday morning, and had breakfast which kept me going till teatime. Freshly cooked and silver service. Met some interesting people, too.
If I had known u was doing new clee etc any local stops I would of met you and told you a few things u possibly wouldn’t know lol. The reason y they use TP Express Staff on that Service is that Northern Staff very rarely operate that service has there own staff mainly operate the Sat service that runs cleethorpes to Sheffield service via Brigg. EMR have only started really operating the trains on that line since COVID 19 occasionally they use to borrow EMR Stock but more so Northen stock from South Yorkshire and a single unit of GWR.
You fibbed when you said that there was nothing around Geoff 😮. There's an Aldi supermarket not 150 yards from the station entrance and clearly visible 😁. I speak from experience.
Parents live in the area new clee used to be an northern station until December 2019 then emr took over the Barton to cleethorpes hope this helps geoff

Northern owns some EMT liveried 153s. Apart from that I'm not sure... It is a Northern Trains service though.
Northern don't. These are borrowed from EMR on a daily basis.
2:27 is this used to be a double track Line since I saw a platform not in use
I've ridden in this train in the summer on a sunday, it definitely does not stop at new clee unless requested xD
also just realised, they are using east midlands trains. In the last 6 years where ive been using the train, ive only seen northern ones
Well the seat is a New Clee blue glow that surrounding you there Geoff! But you New Clee-ry got some nice funny puns there. If all else fails how about New-Clee Benchmarking 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
And on the New Clee Bombshell it was another lovely request stop video to watch.
Police turn up for newclee incident?
NewClee winter - waiting on the freezing platform for the train in December
"Bad train puns" or "Geoff's slow descent into madness"
New Clee Reaction - the act of putting your hand out to request the driver to stop
Visited the station on New Years Day 2016. No trains running as the line was closed for engineering works. The entire area of the docks and New Clee was like a ghost town, well except for the numerous seagulls.
Takes all sorts 😂
I use it sometimes to go to Aldi
New Clee seat of learning or New Clee bench marking time between trains.
Was it the Civil New Clee Constabulary that attended the scene?
Interesting fact for you. When the old 125 service to London ran from Cleethorpes in the 80’s they had to have smaller carriages made because for the tight bend just after new Clee.
Those were the days! I had a spell going to London once a month. Caught the early train on Monday morning, and had breakfast which kept me going till teatime. Freshly cooked and silver service. Met some interesting people, too.
I've been to Grmsby and Cleethorpes twice now but never the two little stations in-between - doesn't look like there's much reason to either!
Hello, I’ve been waiting for this episode for a bit now, I’m local to Grimsby
You fibbed when you said that there was nothing around Geoff 😮. There's an Aldi supermarket not 150 yards from the station entrance and clearly visible 😁. I speak from experience.
If the sea level rises it'll be New Clee Submarine.
EMR are due to take over the route from Barton to Cleethorpes and EMR lent stock to Northern.
Old school speed limit signs too. Yellow letters on top of a pole.
What was that behind the bench you were sitting on, Geoff? Ah, the New Clee De-fence!
Im curious, in these forgotten stations, isnt the sole fact that someone is standing on a platform at all, a clear signal for the driver?
Parents live in the area new clee used to be an northern station until December 2019 then emr took over the Barton to cleethorpes hope this helps geoff
I thought there was a new request stop in Clee, damn!
New Clee r arms race : Can you put your arm out in time for the train to stop OR if more people around who puts their arm out first.
New Clee Reactor = Geoff reacting to the train "station" ^_^
Geoff, if you hired someone to play your role in the video....newclee reactor
I thought it meant a totally new request stop. And i was excited about that 😄
Wish I knew you were going to be there. My town. I now live near london but was in GY last week.
New Clee the place to go if you want to be a pirate..
New Clee arrrg.
I'll shoo myself out...
