I’m glad I can assist in reducing the number of trips to Bunnings. Lol
However a trip to Bunnings is certainly still a weekend destination.

Thank you for showing this. Has filled my head with ideas. Also I realised after seeing you tow with the Ram that your typical 3.5t ute is not up to towing a large caravan over a long trip. I was always uneasy that my Ford Ranger just was too light and under powered for the task. After diving pass a Hilux on its roof towing a caravan, and all this on a straight part of the motorway I was greatly motivated to upgrade. I'm now a proud owner of a Dodge Ram and couldn't be happier. Tows without effort and is very comfortable on long trips. Looks great too.

During our latest road trip I filled up 4 times
So that equals 40 jerry cans lol
It certainly would have been a back breaking job, however with the bladder and pump, it was so easy.

You are filling using the wrong connector. You should fill through the bottom and have a hose on the top connector to allow the air to escape from the bladder.

I suppose that is another option to filling the bladder via the bottom connector however it may not be obvious from the video of how large the diameter of the top filling hole actually is.
It is certainly large enough to not only allow the filling hose to fit, but also large enough to allow air to escape.
I have always used the bladder as you would a normal water tank where you fill it via the top.

How long did it take to fill the bag up? I had a look at the filter and it says the max flow is .8gpm. An hour to fill seems like ages. Or does it flow faster but not filter as well? Cheers

I basically put the filter in line with the fill hose. The flow was reduced however not by much. From memory it took about 10 minutes to fill.
I assumed the filter was doing its job…..

That’s awesome. If the water bladder is close enough to the fresh water tank will the water bladder water gravity feed from hose to fresh water tank? Or is a 12v imperative?

Yes I would suggest that if you can position the bladder up above your tanks then gravity should de the trick. However the pump would certainly speed up the water transfer rate

I basically leave it draining for a while in the sun. As we only use our tank water for washing and toilet flushing, it takes the issue away of ensuring that the bladder is properly dried.
We always use bottled water for drinking

Hi Phillip that is great news that you too now have a solution to transport water back to your off-grid without straining your back.
I don’t actually tie mine down. I have ribbed marine carpet in the tub which the bladder sits on. It doesn’t move around.

@livinglife2themaxx148 Cheers Glenn and Nat, l ended up using a ryobi transfer pump ,uses half a 5amp battery ,,has your bladder water smell/ taste ,decreased over time or is there an additive you know off , l have a guzzle H20 water treatment system for our drinking water which is great but worried it won't deal with the strong water bladder smell I've flushed it 4 times and dried it out using a blower but still a strong odour ,,,cheers Phil

That is great that you have sorted out your solution.
I normally try to dry out the bladder before rolling up and packing it away.
I haven’t noticed a smell from it as yet.
To be honest, I don’t drink from my bladder/tank water. We only use the water for showering, toilet flushing and washing up.
We always purchase bottled water for drinking. It may cost a little more, however it saves a lot of fuss trying to keep your tanks clean. It also saves picking up a bug while you are out and about. It would not be a pleasant experience.

I have used the pump to take water from a river. I only used the carbon filter. I would suggest that your idea of using a strainer would have been a better idea as the pump was struggling a little while trying to suck thru the filter.
Thanks for the tip, I’ll certainly try using a strainer next time.

Hi guys, thanks to your advice we’re about to invest in a slight variation of the gear you have in your rig (we’re getting a 125 litre transmission hump bladder to go behind the front seats of our Disco 4). Just a question - is the pump kit you use also suitable to pull water our of a river or stream or will we need another pump / filter setup for that? Thanks & Cheers 😊

I have tried pumping from a river and it worked ok, however just keep in mind it’s only a small pump and it doesn’t have a powerful head, therefore you need to keep the bladder as close to the water level as possible.
Possibly a bigger pump my be needed if you need to pump up a fair distance.

Hi mate like the video i am thinking about upgrading my tow car to a ram, what is the fuel like when towing your van, did you do a upgrade to you ram to carry the weights my van is just under 3 ton we are going to do 12 months trip next year

The RAM is amazing. I was totally blown away with is performance and capability. It was the perfect vehicle to tow a 3.5 ton caravan around Australia, especially on the rough roads. People talk about the reliability of certain makes. During the Trip, I spoke to a few people who were having mechanical issues with that particular make and surprisingly, they were having trouble sourcing parts. So don’t be put off with people talking about RAM reliability and part supply. In actual fact, I had the RAM serviced a few times during the trip, and I found that the service agents couldn’t do enough to help me.
If you want a vehicle that is reliable, comfortable, powerful and relatively fuel efficient, it’s hard to find a better vehicle than the RAM. We averaged 22L/100km during our 27000km trip around Australia. We did endure some strong headwinds and we were running aggressive AT tyres on both the RAM and caravan which didn’t help the mileage.
Some people talk about its payload. Please remember that a RAMs curb weight includes a full tank of fuel (121 litres) Most other vehicles have a curb weight that includes only 10 litres of fuel, therefore their payload isn’t as good as they believe. Also the 4.5 ton rated tow bar is already included in the payload weight.
A couple features that I really like about the RAM is the Tow/Haul mode as well as the built in break controller.
The only limitation of the RAM is its axel weight. A SCD Performance GVM upgrade assists in removing that limitation.
By the way, due to the RAMs 7237kg GCM, it is one of a very few vehicles that can tow a 3.5 ton caravan.

The in line tap was actually part of the pump in a box kit.
The items from Bunnings were the tap fitting, click connectors, and wing nut hose clamps.

The tap is found in the garden irrigation section. They are often called something like an inline barbed tap or fitting.

We are so used to paying for everything we do and receive these days, to actually obtain water for free is strange.
Although when you think about it, the regional councils out in Australia need to be congratulated. They have realised that by building infrastructure such as Water Fill Stations and Dump Points, they tap into the exploding multi billion dollar caravanning industry.
To have a draw card such as giving away 200 litres of water, worth say $2.00, they draw numerous traveler’s to their towns, who in turn purchased fuel, groceries, and other goods and services.
The time that we spent in the Bega Shire, we would have spent hundreds of dollars. We even filled our gas bottle. All of this is a massive boost to these regional towns.
“Free Water” mmm maybe, but the massive flow on benefits are enormous. Pardon the Pun.

Do you have a solution for grey water tank emptying. As somewhere it is not suitable to empty the grey water tank

I suppose you just need to use common sense when in other areas.

I normally get 11 - 12 litres per hundred when doing my daily drive and 19 - 21 litres per hundred when towing the 3.5 ton van.
We averaged 21 litres per hundred for our past to road trips. One over to the Eyre Peninsula and the other down the NSW South Coast. Very happy with that

Great video. Just noticed it looks like your stabiliser legs on your van are straight instead of angled. I assume you are aware the van has more stability if the legs are angled?
Pretty sure our instructions say straight has more strength

I have always wound the stabiliser legs straight down, unless due to uneven ground, I will then wind them down at an angle.
When I do wind down at an angle, I find it seem to strain the stabilisers.
Our van can be up at 3.5 ton and it seems better to have them straight down. Also with the independent off road suspension, the van is very stable to start with.
I would suggest though if the van was lighter, then an angle may be better.
It would be to hear from others about the angles they use…
